KIDNAPPING ARREST DETAILS JKB 10/6/10

  • POLICE OFFICIALS IN FRESNO SAY THEY BEAT THE ODDS YESTERDAY IN THE RECOVERY OF AN 8YEAR OLD GIRL WHO WAS ABDUCTED BY A STRANGER MONDAY NIGHT.

THEY ALSO SAY THE INTERVENTION OF A GOOD SAMARITAN WHO HEARD NEWS REPORTS WAS KEY IN HER RESCUE. ACCORDING TO POLICE, VICTOR PEREZ SPOTTED THE SUSPECTS PICK-UP TRUCK AND PULLED IN FRONT OF HIM, CUTTING HIM OFF. THE GIRL WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE TO SAFETY. PEREZ THEN FOLLOWED THE SUSPECTS VEHICLE OBTAINING A PARTIAL LICENSE PLATE NUMBER. THE CHP LOCATED THE TRUCK A SHORT TIME LATER AND ARRESTED SUSPECTED GANG MEMBER, 24 YEAR OLD GREGORIO GONZALEZ WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH KIDNAPPING, FALSE IMPRISONMENT AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. THE VICTIM WAS TREATED AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL AND RE-UNITED WITH HER PARENTS.

E-QUAKE JKB 10/06/10

  • A 4.4 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE RATTLED AN AREA OFF THE HUMBOLDT COUNTY COAST YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 8:15 AM AND WAS CENTERED 35 MILES WEST NORTH WEST OF EUREKA. THERE WERE SEVERAL REPORTS OF RESIDENTS FEELING THE QUAKE IN THE EUREKA AND FORTUNA AREAS, BUT NO REPORTED DAMAGES. A TSUNAMI WARNING WAS NOT ISSUED, AS THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT WAVE ACTIVITY.

FIRE TRUCK VS. MOTORCYCLE JKB 10/6/10

  • A WHITETHORN MAN WAS LUCKY TO ESCAPE WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES AFTER COLLIDING HEAD ON WITH A FIRE TRUCK WHILE RIDING A MOTORCYCLE NEAR THE MENDOCINO/HUMBOLDT COUNTY LINE ON MONDAY.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 25 YEAR OLD SCOTT JANZEN WAS RIDING NORTHBOUND ON BRICELAND-THORN ROAD JUST BEFORE 8 AM, WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HE ALLOWED HIS MOTORCYCLE TO DRIFT OVER THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE, DIRECTLY INTO THE PATH OF A CAL FIRE ENGINE, BEING DRIVEN BY 40 YEAR OLD DANIEL WESTBROOK OF WHITETHORN. JANZEN MIRACULOUSLY ONLY SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AND WAS TAKEN TO JEROLD PHELPS HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. WESTBROOK WAS NOT INJURED. INVESTIGATORS SAY ALCOHOL OR DRUGS DO NOT APPEAR TO BE A FACTOR IN THE CRASH.

GARBERVILLE WOMAN INJURED IN CRASH JKB 10/6/10

  • A GARBERVILLE WOMAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED IN A TWO CAR COLLISION ON REDWOOD DRIVE JUST SOUTH OF CAMP 31 ROAD LATE LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 41 YEAR OLD DONNA YACKS WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED OT MAKE A LEFT TURN ONTO A GRAVEL TURNOUT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT AROUND 7:30 PM. THURSDAY. A FULL SIZED PICK UP TRUCK FOLLOWING HER CAR, BEING DRIVEN BY 35 YEAR OLD BRUCE WILLIS OF EUREKA, ILLEGALLY CROSSED THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE IN AN ATTEMPT TO PASS AND STRUCK YACKS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. SHE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN THE CRASH AND WAS TAKEN TO JEROLD PHELPS HOSPITAL IN GARBERVILLE.

COUPLE ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES JKB 10/6/10

  • A GUALALA COUPLE WAS ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES AFTER SHERIFFS DEPUTIES SERVED AN ARREST WARRANT FRIDAY NIGHT.

50 YEAR OLD PEGGY HERNANDEZ AND 50 YEAR OLD ROGELIO SANCHEZ-LOPEZ WERE FOUND IN POSSESSION OF JUST UNDER 7 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, A POUND OF MARIJUANA, DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, 3 FIREARMS AND APPROXIMATELY $10,000 IN CASH. BOTH WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH A NUMBER OF DRUG POSSESSION FOR SALE CHARGES. HERNANDEZ WAS ALSO ARRESTED FOR BEING A CONVICTED FELON IN POSSESSION OF FIREARMS. BOTH ARE BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL DUE TO PROBATION AND PAROLE VIOLATIONS.

LAKEPORT POLICE CHIEF STEPPING DOWN JKB 10/6/109

  • LAKEPORT POLICE CHIEF KEVIN BURKE HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL BE LEAVING THE DEPARTMENT AS OF OCTOBER 31ST.

BURKE HAS ALREADY ACCEPTED A SIMILAR POSITION WITH THE HEALDSBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT. HE HAS SERVED AS LAKEPORTS CHIEF OF POLICE SINCE MARCH OF 2006. LAKEPORT POLICE LT. BRAD RASMUSSEN, WHO HAS BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT SINCE 1990, HAS BEEN NAMED AS THE INTERIM POLICE CHIEF AND WILL TAKE OVER THE POSITION NOVEMBER 1ST.

  • SCATTERED RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST FOR TODAY, AND THAT MEANS ROADWAYS COULD BECOME SLICK WITH ROAD SURFACE OIL AS IT WASHES OUT OF THE PAVEMENT.

CHP ADVISES TAKING IT EASY OUT THERE AND BE AWARE THAT CONDITIONS COULD BE A LITTLE MORE SLIPPERY THAN NORMAL.

INCREASED FLOW FROM LAKE MENDOCINO STARTS FRIDAY JKB 10/6/10

  • THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS WILL BEGIN INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF WATER BEING RELEASED INTO THE RUSSIAN RIVER FROM THE COYOTE VALLEY DAM ON LAKE MENDOCINO COYOTE ON FRIDAY.

THE WATER RELEASE WILL AID CHINOOK SALMON IN THEIR MIGRATION UP THE RIVER TO SPAWN AND WILL BE THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE DAM WAS BUILT THAT WATER WILL BE RELEASED IN OCTOBER FOR THAT PURPOSE. RIVERSIDE RESIDENTS ARE ADVISED THAT THE INCREASE WATER FLOW COULD WASH AWAY BOATS, IRRIGATION EQUIPMENT AND OTHER ITEMS LOCATED NEAR THE RIVERS BANKS.

RENT STABILIZATION AT UKIAH CITY COUNCIL MEETING JKB 10/6/10

  • THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL IS SCHEDULED TO VOTE ON AN ORDINANCE DESIGNED TO STABILIZE RENTS FOR TENANTS FOR MOBILE HOME PARKS AT THEIR MEETING TONIGHT.

AT THEIR MEETING LAST MONTH, THE COUNCIL VOTED TO HAVE CITY ATTORNEY DAVID RAPPORT DRAFT AN ORDINANCE MODELED AFTER ONE ALREADY IN EFFECT IN SANTA ROSA THAT ESTABLISHES A BASE RENT AND LIMITS THE AMOUNT OF ANNUAL INCREASES A LANDLORD CAN IMPLEMENT. THE ORDINANCE ALSO DEFINES HOW AND WHICH EXPENDITURES CAN BE PASSED ON TO TENANTS.
