  • A PEDESTRIAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED LAST WEEK WHEN SHE WAS HIT TRUCK IN COVELO.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 29 YEAR OLD LAUREL MANGEL OF COVELO WAS WALKING ACROSS HIGHWAY 162 FROM HOWARD STREET IN A CROSSWALK, WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY A FULL SIZED PICK UP TRUCK DRIVEN BY 49 YEAR OLD GLENN BOSSOM OF COVELO AT AROUND 3:45 PM. MANGEL WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. AUTHORITIES SAY IT IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME WHY BOSSOM FAILED TO SEE MANGEL IN THE CROSSWALK. THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACCIDENT IS CONTINUING.

ASSAULT ARREST JKB 10/15/10

  • A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER AN ARGUMENT ESCALATED INTO A PHYSICAL FIGHT WEDNESDAY MORNING.

DEPUTIES LEARNED OF THE INCIDENT WHEN THEY WERE CALLED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER EMERGENCY ROOM AT 9 AM. THE VICTIM REPORTED THAT HE HAD BEEN IN A VERBAL ARGUMENT WITH 44 DARREL OWENS THAT MORNING. DURING THE ALTERCATION, OWENS PICKED UP A CARPENTERS SAW AND HIT HIM 3 TIMES. TWO OF THE BLOWS CAUSED CUTTING INJURIES TO THE VICTIMS LEFT HAND. THE THIRD, AN ABRASION TO HIS LEFT SHOULDER. THE TWO MEN WERE SEPARATED BY ANOTHER PERSON AT THE SCENE AND OWENS LEFT THE RESIDENCE WHILE THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. OWENS WAS LATER LOCATED AND ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

ASSAULT ARREST IN UKIAH JKB 10/15/10

  • A UKIAH MAN WHO ATTACKED A FAMILY MEMBER WITH A METAL BROOM HANDLE WAS ARRESTED ON ASSAULT CHARGES WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON NORTH STATE STREET SHORTLY AFTER 1 PM. WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY SAW THE VICTIM BLEEDING FROM A CUT ON HIS LEFT HAND AND 19 YEAR OLD JACOB HOWE ACTING IN AN AGITATED AND HOSTILE MANNER. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, HOWE BECAME ENRAGED WHEN HE WAS ASKED TO LEAVE THE HOME BY FAMILY MEMBERS, PICKED UP A METAL BROOM HANDLE, BROKE IT IN HALF AND USED IT AS A WEAPON. THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. HOWE WAS BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

POT AND WEAPONS ARREST JKB 10/15/10

  • A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP LED TO THE ARREST OF A CONVICTED FELON ON DRUG AND WEAPONS CHARGES TUESDAY EVENING.

25 YEAR OLD SHANE ROORK OF UKIAH WAS PULLED OVER BY UKIAH POLICE ON EAST GOBBIE STREET AT AROUND 7:20 PM. DURING THE STOP, THE OFFICER SMELLED BOTH MARIJUANA AND ALCOHOL LEADING TO FURTHER INVESTIGATION. A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE TURNED UP APPROXIMATELY 2 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA, A VARIETY OF AMMUNITION AND A FLARE GUN LOADED WITH A 12 GAUGE SHOT GUN ROUND. DUE TO A PREVIOUS FELONY CONVICTION, ROORK IS PROHIBITED FROM POSSESSING AMMUNITION OR FIREARMS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES AND IS BEING HELD ON $50,000 BAIL.

CALIFORNIA JOINS FIGHT AGAINST FORECLOSURES JKB 10/15/10

  • CALIFORNIA HAS JOINED A COALITION OF 49 STATE ATTORNEY GENERALS AND A NUMBER OF BANKING REGULATORS IN A MULTI STATE EFFORT TO PROTECT HOMEOWNERS FROM FORECLOSURE.

STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL EDMOND G. BROWN ANNOUNCED JOINING THE COALITION ON WEDNESDAY. THE GROUP WAS FORMED AFTER SEVERAL NATIONAL LENDERS AND LOAN SERVICES ADMITTED THAT WHAT THEY TERMED ROBO-SIGNERS HAD VOUCHED FOR THE ACCURACY OF FORECLOSURE DOCUMENTS THAT HAD NEVER BEEN REVIEWED, LEADING TO WHAT MAY CONSTITUTE DECEPTIVE AND UNFAIR PRACTICES AGAINST HOMEOWNERS. THE MULTI STATE COALITION WILL REVIEW HOW LENDERS VERIFY FORECLOSURE DOCUMENTS NATIONALLY. ATTORNEY BROWN HAS CALLED ON ALL LENDERS IN CALIFORNIA TO HALT FORECLOSURE PROCEEDINGS UNTIL THEY CAN PROVE THEY ARE COMPLYING WITH STATE LAW.

LAKEPORT TO BE SUED BY POLICE OFFICERS JKB 10/15/10

  • THE LAKEPORT POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION IS PREPARING TO SUE THE CITY OF LAKEPORT AFTER THE CITY COUNCIL DECIDED NOT TO KEEP A CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENT TO UPGRADE THE POLICE DEPARTMENTS RETIREMENT PLAN.

ACCORDING TO ASSOCIATION OFFICIALS, THE CITY ADOPTED A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING TO IMPROVE THE RETIREMENT FORMULA FROM 2 TO 3% AT AGE 50 IN 2006. AT A JULY 20TH MEETING THIS YEAR HOWEVER, THE COUNCIL FAILED TO APPROVE THE NEW RETIREMENT PACKAGE AND THEN VOTED DOWN THE IMPROVEMENT PACKAGE ALTOGETHER ON A 3 TO 2 VOTE IN AUGUST. THE LAKEPORT POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION HAS NOW TAKEN THE FIRST STEP IN BRINGING A LAW SUIT AGAINST THE CITY BY FILING AN OFFICIAL GRIEVANCE.

PRESIDENT CLINTON ON THE NORTH COAST

  • FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON WILL BE IN NAPA THIS WEEKEND STUMPING FOR NORTH COAST AND STATE DEMOCRATS WHO ARE CAMPAIGNING FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTION IN NOVEMBER.

AS PART OF THE GET OUT THE VOTE RALLY, CLINTON WILL SPEAK AT HE UPTOWN THEATER ON 3RD STREET AT 2 PM. THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC WITH DOORS OPENING AT 1 PM. TWO GUILTY OF BEATING IMMIGRANT TO DEATH JKB 10/15/10

  • TWO MEN ON TRIAL IN A PENNSYLVANIA FEDERAL COURT FOR THE MURDER OF AN UNDOCUMENTED MEXICAN IMMIGRANT HAVE BEEN FOUND GUILTY ON ALL CHARGES, INCLUDING HATE CRIMES.

20 YEAR OLD DERRICK DONCHAK AND 18 YEAR OLD BRANDON PIEKARSKY HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN ACQUITTED OF MURDER CHARGES IN STATE COURT AND CONVICTED OF ONLY SIMPLE ASSAULT IN THE BEATING DEATH OF LUIS RAMIREZ. DONCHACK WAS SENTENCED TO 6 MONTHS IN JAIL WHILE PIEKARSKY WAS GIVEN ONLY 23 MONTHS. FEDERAL PROSECUTORS THEN CHARGED THE TWO MEN IN FEDERAL COURT WITH HATE CRIMES AND DEPRIVING RAMIREZ OF HIS CIVIL RIGHTS. NOW, EACH MAN COULD FACE UP TO LIFE IN PRISON. BOTH WILL BE SENTENCED JANUARY 24TH.

11th SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ANTI GAY BEATINGS JKB 10/15/10

  • AN 11TH SUSPECT HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH A SERIES OF ANTI-GAY BEATINGS IN NEW YORK.

26 YEAR OLD LUIS GARCIA IS ACCUSED OF WRAPPING A CHAIN AROUND HIS FIST AND PUNCHING A 30 YEAR OLD VICTIM TWICE. HE FACES SIMILAR CHARGES AS THE OTHER 10 SUSPECTS INCLUDING HATE CRIMES. THE ATTACKS, WHICH OCCURRED OCTOBER 3RD TARGETED 3 VICTIMS, WHO WERE HELD AGAINST THEIR WILL BY SEVERAL ASSAILANTS, AND BEATEN. TWO OF THE VICTIMS WERE SODOMIZED. A 4TH VICTIM WAS BEATEN AND ROBBED IN CONNECTION WITH THE ATTACKS AT A SEPARATE LOCATION. AUTHORITIES SAY THE ATTACKS BEGAN WHEN MEMBERS OF A STREET GANG CALLED THE LATIN KING GOONIES LEARNED THAN AN ASPIRING MEMBER IS GAY.

MINERS BEING RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL JKB 10/15/10

  • MORE MINERS ARE EXPECTED TO BE DISCHARGED TODAY FROM A REGIONAL HOSPITAL IN CHILE FOLLOWING THEIR RESCUE AFTER BEING TRAPPED 69 DAYS UNDERGROUND.

OFFICIALS HOPE ALL 33 MEN WILL BE HOME WITH THEIR FAMILIES BY SUNDAY. THREE OF THE MINERS WERE DISCHARGED LAST NIGHT.

INSURGENCY GETTING WORSE IN AFGHANISTAN JKB 10/15/10

  • ACCORDING TO A NEW REPORT FROM THE AFGHANISTAN NGO SAFETY OFFICE OR ANSO, SAYS THE INSURGENCY IN AFGHANISTAN IS GAINING STRENGTH AND IS ACQUIRING NEW RECRUITS IN AREAS WHERE THE TALIBAN HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN A CONCERN.

ARMED ATTACKS BY INSURGENTS JUMPED 59% IN THE THIRD QUARTER OF THIS YEAR COMPARED TO THE SAME TIME PERIOD IN 2009. ACCORDING TO THE REPORT, SOME DISTRICTS IN THE NORTHERN PROVINCES ARE IN DANGER OF SLIPPING BEYOND COALITION CONTROL AND COUNTERINSURGENCY EFFORTS IN THE SOUTH HAVE FAILED TO DEGRADE INSURGENTS ABILITY TO FIGHT, REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CIVILIAN COMBAT FATALITIES OR DELIVER BOXED GOVERNMENT.
