NAPA HOSPITAL EMPLOYEE KILLED BY PATIENT JKB 10/25/10

  • AN EMPLOYEE AT NAPA STATE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL WAS KILLED BY PATIENT INMATE ON SATURDAY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE THE BODY OF 54 YEAR OLD DONNA GROSS WAS FOUND INSIDE AN ENCLOSED COURTYARD AREA AT AROUND 7 PM. SHE HAD WORKED AS A PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN AT THE FACILITY FOR THE PAST 14 YEARS. 37 YEAR OLD JESS MASSEY WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY BY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES AND IS BEING HELD AT THE NAPA COUNTY JAIL ON SUSPICION OF MURDER. MASSEY HAS BEEN CONFINED TO THE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL SINCE BEING FOUND LEGALLY INSIDE IN 1993. NO DETAILS OF HOW GROSS WAS KILLED HAVE BEEN RELEASED. AN AUTOPSY IS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK.

RAIN LEADS TO CRASHES JKB 10/25/10

  • RAIN SLICKED ROADWAYS LED TO SEVERAL CAR CRASHES AROUND THE AREA, INCLUDING TWO THAT OCCURRED NEAR REYNOLDS HIGHWAY ON HIGHWAY 101 NORTH OF WILLITS.

THE FIRST CRASH OCCURRED THURSDAY NIGHT WHEN A SOUTHBOUND VEHICLE CONTAINING 4 PEOPLE ROLLED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WHILE DESCENDING OIL WELL HILL AT AROUND 9:30 PM. AT LEAST TWO OF THE INJURED OCCUPANTS WERE AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.

A WILLITS POLICE OFFICER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES WHEN HIS PATROL CAR WAS STRUCK BY A PASSING MOTORIST JUST MINUTES AFTER THE INITIAL CRASH. THE OFFICER WAS HEADED NORTHBOUND TOWARD WHERE THE ACCIDENT HAD OCCURRED WHEN A SOUTHBOUND VEHICLE CROSSED THE CENTERLINE AND SIDESWIPED HIS PATROL CAR AT AROUND 10 PM. THE OFFICER TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID A HEAD ON COLLISION, LEFT THE ROADWAY STRUCK A UTILITY POLE AND OVERTURNED. THE SOUTHBOUND VEHICLE FLED THE SCENE AND IS STILL BEING SOUGHT. THE OFFICER WAS TREATED AND RELEASED FROM HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. IT IS NOT CLEAR IF HE WAS HEADED TO THE EARLIER CRASH SITE WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED.

TWO PEOPLE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN A HEAD ON COLLISION ON FRIDAY MORNING AT ALMOST THE EXACT SAME SPOT ON OIL WELL HILL WHERE THE ROLL OVER COLLISION HAPPENED THE NIGHT BEFORE. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT 8:42 AM AND TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN THE HIGHWAY FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR.

WET ROADWAYS ARE ALSO BEING BLAMED FOR AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH A VEHICLE SPUN OUT ON HIGHWAY 101 JUST NORTH OF THE SONOMA MENDOCINO COUNTY LINE AND PLUNGED 100 FEET OVER THE SIDE OF A CLIFF AND INTO THE RUSSIAN RIVER. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT 8:21 FRIDAY MORNING. ONE PERSON WAS TAKEN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. NO OTHER DETAILS ABOUT THE CRASH HAVE BEEN RELEASED.

SEVERAL INJURED AT BAR BY PEPPER SPRAY JKB 10/25/10

  • SEVERAL PEOPLE SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES WHEN A MAN SPRAYED PEPPER SPRAY INSIDE SILKS BAR ON LAKESHORE DRIVE IN CLEARLAKE FRIDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, A SUSPECT DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE ADULT WITH TATTOOS TARGETED ONE PERSON INSIDE THE BAR WITH PEPPER SPRAY AT AROUND 11 PM, BUT CONTINUED TO DISCHARGE PEPPER SPRAY INTO THE AIR AS HE FLED INTO A WAITING RED CAR BEING DRIVEN BY A FEMALE SUBJECT. IT IS UNCLEAR WHO THE TARGET OF THE ATTACK WAS, OR WHAT THE MOTIVE MAY HAVE BEEN. ABOUT 100 PEOPLE WERE INSIDE THE BAR WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, AND APPROXIMATELY 10 WERE TREATED FOR EXPOSURE TO THE IRRITANT. THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT IS CONTINUING.

POT BUST JKB 10/25/10

  • 5 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED WHEN MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES SERVED AN ARREST WARRANT AT A HOME ON BLACK OAK DRIVE IN REDWOOD VALLEY LAST WEDNESDAY.

WHILE SERVING THE WARRANT, DEPUTIES NOTICED SEVERAL GROWING MARIJUANA PLANTS ON THE PROPERTY AND 4 PEOPLE STANDING NEXT TO A TARP COVERED STRUCTURE IN THE BACK YARD. THE 4 ADMITTED TO WORKING AT THE PROPERTY MANICURING MARIJUANA. A FURTHER SEARCH OF THE PROPERTY TURNED UP 65 GROWING MARIJUANA PLANTS AND APPROXIMATELY 60 POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA. WHILE DEPUTIES WERE CONDUCTING THEIR INVESTIGATION, THE PROPERTY OWNER, 47 YEAR OLD MARTHA VON FELDT ARRIVED. SHE AND THE OTHER 4 SUBJECTS WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR THE CULTIVATION AND POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA FOR SALE WITH BAIL SET AT $25,000 EACH. VON FELDT CLAIMS SHE WAS NEVER SHOWN AN ARREST WARRANT AND THAT ALL OF THE MARIJUANA SEIZED WAS DOCUMENTED FOR MEDICINAL PURPOSES UNDER PROP 215.

FIRE IN NAPA KILLS 30 CATS JKB 10/25/10

  • A FIRE IN NAPA KILLED 30 CATS ON SUNDAY.

THE BLAZE OCCURRED IN AN OUTBUILDING BEHIND A RESIDENCE ON SILVERADO TRAIL AT AROUND 4:20 PM. THE STRUCTURE, DESCRIBED AS A CATTERY, WAS FULLY ENGULFED I FLAMES BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. ALL 30 ANIMALS THAT DIED WERE LOCATED INSIDE THE BUILDING. IT IS NOT CLEAR IF THE OWNERS OF THE PROPERTY WERE CAT BREEDERS. NO PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE BLAZE AND THE MAIN HOME ON THE PROPERTY WAS NOT DAMAGED. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

HUMBOLDT ARSON INVESTIGATION JKB 10/25/10

  • HUMBOLDT COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING SEVERAL FIRES OVER THE PAST 3 MONTHS THAT COULD BE LINKED TO A SERIAL ARSONIST.

THE LATEST FIRE OCCURRED AT A 108 YEAR OLD WAREHOUSE ON 10TH AND L STREETS IN ARCATA LATE MONDAY NIGHT AND BEGAN IN A TRASH BIN AT THE REAR OF THE BUILDING. THE BUILDINGS SPRINKLER SYSTEM KEPT THE FIRE FROM CONSUMING THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE BLAZE IS SIMILAR TO SEVERAL OTHERS THAT HAVE ALL BEGUN IN TRASH OR RECYCLING BINS IN THE ARCATA AREA OVER THE PAST 3 MONTHS.
