  • AN ELDERLY WOMAN WHO WENT MISSING IN ALBION YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, WAS FOUND SAFE AND SOUND AFTER AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH BY RESCUERS.

83 YEAR OLD GABRIELLE YAKOUSHKIN, WHO SUFFERS FROM ALZHEIMERS AND DEMENTIA, WANDERED AWAY FROM HER HOME AT AROUND 1:15 PM. SHE WAS REPORTED MISSING BY HER DAUGHTER 45 MINUTES LATER. A SEARCH PARTY MADE UP OF SHERIFFS DEPUTIES, SEARCH AND RESCUE PERSONNEL, THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS OF ALBION, MENDOCINO AND ELK SCOURED THE SURROUNDING AREA FOR MORE THAN 4 AND HALF HOURS.   • A MODERATE SIZED EARTHQUAKE RATTLED THE EUREKA AREA YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE QUAKE MEASURED 3.4 IN MAGNITUDE AND WAS CENTERED 10 MILES EAST SOUTH EAST OF EUREKA AND 15 MILES NORTH EAST OF FORTUNA. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF DAMAGES OR INJURIES.

  • THE CHP SAYS THEY MAY CHARGE A FELONY HIT AND RUN SUSPECT WITH ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, IN CONNECTION WITH A CYCLIST THAT WAS STRUCK AND INJURED WHILE PARTICIPATING IN THE GRANFONDO BIKE RACE, PROVIDED THEY CAN FIND THEM.

INVESTIGATORS SAY THE DRIVER OF A MAROON COLORED SUV THAT HIT 57 YEAR OLD CYCLIST ANOUSH ZEBARJARDAIN OF SAN FRANCISCO, WAS DRIVING ERRATICALLY AND POSSIBLY HARASSING CYCLISTS PRIOR TO THE CRASH.   • FIRE INVESTIGATORS SAY A CANDLE LEFT BURNING TOO CLOSE TO AN AEROSOL CAN WAS THE CAUSE OF AN EXPLOSION THAT SEVERELY DAMAGED A FORESTVILLE APARTMENT EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE 5 AM BLAST SHATTERED WINDOWS, CAUSE A FLASH FIRE, AND CRITICALLY DAMAGED A SUPPORTING WALL IN THE TINY 450 FOOT SQUARE FOOT APARTMENT IN THE RIVER ROAD TRIPLEX HOME. THE RESIDENT OF THE APARTMENT, ESCAPED WITH ONLY SINGED HAIR DESPITE SLEEPING FAIRLY CLOSE TO THE EXPLODING AEROSOL CAN. FIRE OFFICIALS LISTED THE APARTMENT AS UNINHABITABLE.

GANG RELATED STABBING IN FORT BRAGG JKB 10/19/10

  • A FORT BRAGG JUVENILE SUFFERED A LIFE THREATENING INJURY WHEN HE WAS STABBED IN WHAT POLICE BELIEVE WAS A GANG RELATED ATTACK LAST FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

POLICE LEARNED OF THE INCIDENT AFTER BEING CALLED TO MENDOCINO COAST HOSPITAL, WHERE THE VICTIM SAID HE WAS WALKING ON CEDAR STREET WHEN HE WAS ATTACKED FROM BEHIND AND STABBED TWICE IN THE UPPER CHEST AT AROUND 3:30 PM. HE WAS ABLE TO BREAK FREE AND RUN TO A NEARBY BUSINESS WHERE HE CALLED FOR HELP. THE VICTIM SUFFERED A PUNCTURED AND COLLAPSED LUNG. POLICE SAY THE VICTIM WAS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PERSON WHO STABBED HIM. HE ALSO STATED THAT 2 OR 3 OTHER MALES, ALL OF WHOM WERE WEARING BLACK CLOTHING ACCOMPANIED THE ASSAILANT. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THIS INCIDENT IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT.

2 MEN ARRESTED FOR PROVIDING ALCOHOL TO MINORS JKB 120/19/10

  • A PRIVATE PARTY WHERE MINORS WERE CONSUMING ALCOHOL, LED TO THE ARREST OF TWO LAKE COUNTY MEN EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

POLICE WHO RESPONDED TO THE HOME ON BUSH STREET FOUND 8 MINORS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL. SOME OF THE TEENAGERS WERE ALSO FOUND UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ECSTASY. THEY WERE ALL TURNED OVER TO THEIR PARENTS. 24 YEAR OLD LUIS CORTEZ ARROYO OF KELSEYVILLE AND 24 YEAR OLD SAUL ETHAN LE FORT OF CLEARLAKE WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE DELINQUENCY OF A MINOR.

  • A 32 YEAR OLD LAKEPORT WOMAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED WHEN SHE WAS PINNED BETWEEN TWO VEHICLES ON FRIDAY.

THE WOMAN WHOS NAME WAS NOT RELEASED WAS REPORTEDLY STANDING AT THE BACK OF A CHEVY SUBURBAN STRADDLING THE HITCH OF THE VEHICLE TO HELP HER HUSBAND LOAD A LAND ROVER ONTO AN ATTACHED TOW DOLLY WHEN SHE BECAME TRAPPED BETWEEN THE TWO VEHICLES AT AROUND 10:20 AM. THE WOMAN WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. NO WORD YET ON HER CONDITION. THE ACCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

MAN SENTENCED IN HOME INVASION JKB 10/18/10

  • A SAN JOSE MAN INVOLVED IN A MARIJUANA RELATED HOME INVASION ROBBERY IN FORT BRAGG WAS SENTENCED TO 63 YEARS IN PRISON ON FRIDAY.

38 YEAR OLD GLENN SAMUEL SUNKETT WAS ONE OF 3 MEN WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THE ATTACK ON 4 VICTIMS IN THE HOUSE ON JULY 10TH 2008. THE VICTIMS WERE BEATEN AND THREATENED WITH THEIR LIVES DURING THE ROBBERY IN WHICH MARIJUANA, MONEY AND CELL PHONES WERE TAKEN. SUNKETT WILL HAVE TO SERVE AT LEAST 85% OF HIS SENTENCE BEFORE HE IS ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE.

  • A PEDESTRIAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED LAST WEEK WHEN SHE WAS HIT TRUCK IN COVELO.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 29 YEAR OLD LAUREL MANGEL OF COVELO WAS WALKING ACROSS HIGHWAY 162 FROM HOWARD STREET IN A CROSSWALK, WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY A FULL SIZED PICK UP TRUCK DRIVEN BY 49 YEAR OLD GLENN BOSSOM OF COVELO AT AROUND 3:45 PM. MANGEL WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. AUTHORITIES SAY IT IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME WHY BOSSOM FAILED TO SEE MANGEL IN THE CROSSWALK. THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACCIDENT IS CONTINUING.

  • A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER AN ARGUMENT ESCALATED INTO A PHYSICAL FIGHT WEDNESDAY MORNING.

DEPUTIES LEARNED OF THE INCIDENT WHEN THEY WERE CALLED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER EMERGENCY ROOM AT 9 AM. THE VICTIM REPORTED THAT HE HAD BEEN IN A VERBAL ARGUMENT WITH 44 DARREL OWENS THAT MORNING. DURING THE ALTERCATION, OWENS PICKED UP A CARPENTERS SAW AND HIT HIM 3 TIMES. TWO OF THE BLOWS CAUSED CUTTING INJURIES TO THE VICTIMS LEFT HAND. THE THIRD, AN ABRASION TO HIS LEFT SHOULDER. THE TWO MEN WERE SEPARATED BY ANOTHER PERSON AT THE SCENE AND OWENS LEFT THE RESIDENCE WHILE THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. OWENS WAS LATER LOCATED AND ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

  • A UKIAH MAN WHO ATTACKED A FAMILY MEMBER WITH A METAL BROOM HANDLE WAS ARRESTED ON ASSAULT CHARGES WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON NORTH STATE STREET SHORTLY AFTER 1 PM. WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY SAW THE VICTIM BLEEDING FROM A CUT ON HIS LEFT HAND AND 19 YEAR OLD JACOB HOWE ACTING IN AN AGITATED AND HOSTILE MANNER. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, HOWE BECAME ENRAGED WHEN HE WAS ASKED TO LEAVE THE HOME BY FAMILY MEMBERS, PICKED UP A METAL BROOM HANDLE, BROKE IT IN HALF AND USED IT AS A WEAPON. THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. HOWE WAS BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

25 YEAR OLD SHANE ROORK OF UKIAH WAS PULLED OVER BY UKIAH POLICE ON EAST GOBBIE STREET AT AROUND 7:20 PM. DUE TO A PREVIOUS FELONY CONVICTION, ROORK IS PROHIBITED FROM POSSESSING AMMUNITION OR FIREARMS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES AND IS BEING HELD ON $50,000 BAIL.

FEDERAL PROSECUTORS THEN CHARGED THE TWO MEN IN FEDERAL COURT WITH HATE CRIMES AND DEPRIVING RAMIREZ OF HIS CIVIL RIGHTS. NOW, EACH MAN COULD FACE UP TO LIFE IN PRISON. BOTH WILL BE SENTENCED JANUARY 24TH.

11th SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ANTI GAY BEATINGS JKB 10/15/10

  • AN 11TH SUSPECT HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH A SERIES OF ANTI-GAY BEATINGS IN NEW YORK.

26 YEAR OLD LUIS GARCIA IS ACCUSED OF WRAPPING A CHAIN AROUND HIS FIST AND PUNCHING A 30 YEAR OLD VICTIM TWICE. HE FACES SIMILAR CHARGES AS THE OTHER 10 SUSPECTS INCLUDING HATE CRIMES. THE TWO MEN, 21 YEAR OLD TRENTON REID AND 47 YEAR OLD LEWIS REID, BOTH OF CLEARLAKE OAKS, TOLD DEPUTIES THAT THEY WERE ON WAY HOME FROM SANTA ROSA WHEN THEY PULLED OFF HIGHWAY 29 TO URINATE. PAULICK WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR THE NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM, ASSAULT WITH A FIREARM, MAKING CRIMINAL THREATS, FALSE IMPRISONMENT AND BRANDISHING A FIREARM.   • LAKEPORT POLICE CHIEF KEVIN BURKE HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL BE LEAVING THE DEPARTMENT AS OF OCTOBER 31ST.

BURKE HAS ALREADY ACCEPTED A SIMILAR POSITION WITH THE HEALDSBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT. HE HAS SERVED AS LAKEPORTS CHIEF OF POLICE SINCE MARCH OF 2006. LAKEPORT POLICE LT. BRAD RASMUSSEN, WHO HAS BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT SINCE 1990, HAS BEEN NAMED AS THE INTERIM POLICE CHIEF AND WILL TAKE OVER THE POSITION NOVEMBER 1ST.

INCREASED FLOW FROM LAKE MENDOCINO STARTS FRIDAY JKB 10/6/10

  • THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS WILL BEGIN INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF WATER BEING RELEASED INTO THE RUSSIAN RIVER FROM THE COYOTE VALLEY DAM ON LAKE MENDOCINO COYOTE ON FRIDAY.

THE WATER RELEASE WILL AID CHINOOK SALMON IN THEIR MIGRATION UP THE RIVER TO SPAWN AND WILL BE THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE DAM WAS BUILT THAT WATER WILL BE RELEASED IN OCTOBER FOR THAT PURPOSE. RIVERSIDE RESIDENTS ARE ADVISED THAT THE INCREASE WATER FLOW COULD WASH AWAY BOATS, IRRIGATION EQUIPMENT AND OTHER ITEMS LOCATED NEAR THE RIVERS BANKS.

RENT STABILIZATION AT UKIAH CITY COUNCIL MEETING JKB 10/6/10

  • THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL IS SCHEDULED TO VOTE ON AN ORDINANCE DESIGNED TO STABILIZE RENTS FOR TENANTS FOR MOBILE HOME PARKS AT THEIR MEETING TONIGHT.

AT THEIR MEETING LAST MONTH, THE COUNCIL VOTED TO HAVE CITY ATTORNEY DAVID RAPPORT DRAFT AN ORDINANCE MODELED AFTER ONE ALREADY IN EFFECT IN SANTA ROSA THAT ESTABLISHES A BASE RENT AND LIMITS THE AMOUNT OF ANNUAL INCREASES A LANDLORD CAN IMPLEMENT. THE ORDINANCE ALSO DEFINES HOW AND WHICH EXPENDITURES CAN BE PASSED ON TO TENANTS.
