MISSING HUNTERS FOUND JKB 11/30/10

  • A PAIR OF MISSING HUNTERS IN MENDOCINO COUNTY, AND ANOTHER PAIR IN SONOMA COUNTY WERE BOTH FOUND SAFE AND SOUND AFTER BEING REPORTED MISSING MONDAY.

THE SEARCH EFFORT IN THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST BEGAN AT DAYBREAK YESTERDAY FOR THE TWO MEN, BOTH OF WHOM WERE IN THEIR 60S. THEY WERE REPORTED MISSING AFTER HEADING TO THE GRIZZLY FLATS AREA IN A TRACKED VEHICLE TO RETRIEVE BELONGINGS FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. BOTH WERE LOCATED JUST BEFORE 11:30 YESTERDAY MORNING.

IN SONOMA COUNTY, A BAY AREA FATHER AND SON ON A HUNTING TRIP TO A PRIVATE RANCH IN A REMOTE AREA OFF STEWARTS POINT-SKAGGS SPRINGS ROAD DID NOT KNOW THEY HAD BEEN REPORTED MISSING BY THE OLDER MANS WIFE. SHE CALLED POLICE AFTER THE PAIR HAD NOT RETURNED BY EARLY MONDAY MORNING. THE WAYWARD FATHER AND SON WERE SPOTTED BY A HELICOPTER CREW AT AROUND 7:20 AM STILL HUNTING. THE WIFE THOUGHT THE TRIP WAS ONLY FOR THE WEEKEND.

MAN RESCUED AFTER INHALING DEADLY TOXINS JKB 11/30/10

  • A CLEARLAKE MAN HAD TO BE AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AFTER INHALING A DEADLY COMBINATION OF TOXINS ON WEDNESDAY.

PARAMEDICS WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON KONOCTI VIEW ROAD AT AROUND 8:40 PM. WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY FOUND THE MALE VICTIM SUFFERING FROM EXTREME SHORTNESS OF BREATH AND DETERMINED HE HAD BEEN OVERCOME BY FUMES CREATED WHEN HE MIXED DRANO AND SULFURIC ACID TOGETHER. THE MAN WAS EVACUATED AND A HAZMAT TEAM WAS CALLED IN. THE HOME WAS CLEARED AT AROUND 11:30 PM. NO WORD ON THE VICTIMS CONDITION.

POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING IN NAPA JKB 11/30/10

  • NAPA COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING THE FATAL SHOOTING OF A REPORTEDLY SUICIDAL MAN BY A SHERIFFS DEPUTY SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME BY THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF 60 YEAR OLD RICHARD POCCIA, WHO WERE CONCERNED FOR HIS SAFETY. POLICE CONTACTED POCCCIA BY PHONE AND CONVINCED HIM TO COME OUTSIDE. A CONFRONTATION ENSUED SHORTLY AFTER HE EXITED THE HOME AND HE WAS SHOT BY ONE OF THE DEPUTIES. POCCIA DIED BEFORE PARAMEDICS COULD ARRIVE. THE OFFICER WHO FIRED THE FATAL SHOT AND 3 OTHER RESPONDING DEPUTIES HAVE ALL BEEN PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE PENDING THE OUTCOME OF AN INVESTIGATION.

HEAD ON COLLISION JKB 11/30/10

  • AT LEAST 5 PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 29 IN KELSEYVILLE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, THE DRIVER OF A CAR ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN FROM MAIN STREET ONTO HIGHWAY 29, BUT MISSED AND ENTERED THE INTO THE NORTHBOUND LANE AND COLLIDED WITH AN SUV AT AROUND 3:20 PM. 3 PEOPLE WERE TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO LOCAL HOSPITALS. AT LEAST ONE WAS AIRLIFTED FROM THE SCENE TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE COUNTY. NO OTHER DETAILS ABOUT THE ACCIDENT WERE AVAILABLE.

NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY JKB 11/30/10

  • A HEALDSBURG MAN WHO WAS CONVICTED OF ASSAULTING 3 POLICE OFFICERS DURING A SHOOTOUT IN 2007, IN AN ATTEMPT TO COMMIT SUICIDE BY COP, WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY YESTERDAY.

A JURY FOUND THAT 25 YEAR OLD DAVID JAMES STAFFORD WAS SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION AND ADDICTION TO PRESCRIPTION PAIN KILLERS AT THE TIME HE CONFRONTED POLICE WITH A GUN ON DECEMBER 23RD 2007. DURING THE CONFRONTATION, STAFFORD SHOT HIMSELF IN THE CHEST. DOCTORS TESTIFIED THAT THE COMBINATION OF LONG TERM DEPRESSION, DRUGS, AND ALCOHOL PREVENT STAFFORD FROM DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG. A JUDGE WILL NOW DECIDE IF HIS SANITY HAS BEEN RESTORED AFTER BEING TREATED FOR DEPRESSION DURING HIS 3 YEAR INCARCERATION. STAFFORD COULD BE SENT TO A STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL FOR AN EVALUATION FOR UP TO 6 MONTHS, OR RELEASED AFTER ANOTHER HEARING. PRIOR TO YESTERDAYS VERDICT, HE WAS FACING UP TO 45 YEARS IN STATE PRISON.

BUDDER ELLER CENTER CUTS BACK HOURS JKB 11/30/10

  • DUE TO LOOSING $100,000 IN STATE FUNDING THIS YEAR, THE BUDDY ELLER CENTER SHELTER ON FORD STREET IS REDUCING THEIR HOURS OF OPERATION BY 3 HOURS A DAY.

THE SHELTER WILL STILL STAY OPEN NIGHTLY, BUT WILL ONLY OPERATE FROM 7 PM TO 7 AM. THE DAY SHELTER WAS FORCED TO CLOSE NOVEMBER 5TH BECAUSE OF ANOTHER $100,000 LOSS IN FUNDING WHEN THE STATE BUDGET WAS PASSED.

SAN RAFAEL OFFICER INJURED AT DUI CHECKPOINT JKIB 11/29/10

  • A SAN RAFAEL MOTORCYCLE POLICE OFFICER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A NOVATO MAN TRYING TO AVOID A DUI CHECKPOINT WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

43 YEAR OLD GUILLERMO GARCIA RODRIQUEZ WAS HEADED TOWARD THE CHECKPOINT WHEN HE STOPPED HIS SUV, PUT IT IN REVERSE AND RAMMED INTO OFFICER CHRISTOPHER SWEENEYS MOTORCYCLE. SWEENY WAS PARKED AT A GAS STATION WITH OTHER OFFICERS A SHORT DISTANCE BEFORE THE CHECKPOINT. HE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL, TREATED AND RELEASED. RODRIQUEZ WAS ARRESTED FOR FELONY DRUNK DRIVING AND BOOKED INTO THE MARIN COUNTY JAIL.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED JKB 11/29/10

  • A MOTORCYCLIST SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES WHEN HE CRASHED ON HIGHWAY 29 AT THE COYOTE GRADE SUNDAY EVENING.

AN OFF-DUTY FIREFIGHTER HAPPENED UPON THE INJURED RIDER WHO WAS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT AROUND 5:30 PM. THE UNIDENTIFIED RIDER WAS CONSCIOUS BUT SEVERELY INJURED. INVESTIGATORS SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE COLLISION, BUT THAT IT APPEARED THAT ONLY THE MOTORCYCLE AND RIDER WERE INVOLVED. THE VICTIM WAS AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE COUNTY. NO WORD ON HIS CONDITION.

WITNESSES SOUGHT TO PROPANE TRUCK ACCIDENT JKB 11/29/10

  • THE WILLITS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS LOOKING FOR WITNESSES WHO MAY HAVE SEEN THE ACCIDENT BETWEEN A FLAT BED TOW TRUCK AND A PROPANE TANKER AT BROWNS CORNER THAT SLOWED TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY 101 FOR NEARLY 8 HOURS ON WEDNESDAY.

THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT OVERTURNED THE FULLY LOADED PROPANE TANKER, WHICH IN TURN STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO FIRE OF PROPANE LEAK, BUT MORE THAN 100 GALLONS OF DIESEL FUEL WAS SPILLED FROM THE OVERTURNED TANKER. ANYONE WHO WITNESSED THE COLLISION IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE WILLITS POLICE DEPARTMENT.

4 ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY JKB 11/29/10

  • 4 MEN WERE ARRESTED AFTER THEY TRIED TO RE-POSSES SOME MARIJUANA GROWING EQUIPMENT IN LAYTONVILLE LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS, THE OWNER OF THE PROPERTY, GREG WAHLEN, SAID HE HAD BEEN PARTNERS IN A MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION WITH JASON ASHTON AND HAD RECENTLY PURCHASED GROWING EQUIPMENT FROM HIM FOR $6000. ASHTON WAS DEMANDING ADDITIONAL PAYMENT FOR THE EQUIPMENT AND WAHLEN REFUSED. ASHTON, ALONG WITH 3 OTHER MEN, PULLED UP TO WAHELNS DETACHED GARAGE IN TWO PICK UP TRUCKS AT AROUND 1 PM TUESDAY, FORCED ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING AND BEGAN REMOVING THE EQUIPMENT. WAHLEN CALLED POLICE AND THE 4 SUSPECTS WERE ARRESTED AT THE SCENE AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON BURGLARY CHARGES.

THEFT ARREST JKB 11/29/10

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED ON THEFT CHARGES AFTER HIS MOM TURNED HIM IN TO POLICE LAST WEDNESDAY.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO A HOME ON NORTH STATE STREET AT AROUND 6 PM. A WOMAN REPORTED THAT HER SON HAD STOLEN CLOTHING FROM KOHLS DEPARTMENT STORE. 18 YEAR OLD TYLER PERKINS ADMITTED TO THE THEFT AND HAD POSSESSION OF THE STOLEN ITEMS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON $15,000 BAIL. THE STOLEN MERCHANDISE WAS RETURNED TO KOHLS.

ASSAULT ARREST JKB 11/29/10

  • TWO REDWOOD VALLEY MEN WERE INJURED WHEN THEY WERE ATTACKED BY A UKIAH MAN WIELDING A WOODEN STICK THANKSGIVING EVENING.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON PINE RIDGE ROAD AT AROUND 7:30 PM. WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY WERE TOLD BY SEVERAL WITNESSES THAT THE TWO VICTIMS, AGES 49 AND 26, HAD BEEN ASSAULTED AND BEATEN BY 29 YEAR OLD ARMONDO GALINDO. ONE OF THE VICTIMS WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. THE OTHER HAD TO BE AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. GALINDO WAS ARRESTED FOR BATTERY CAUSING GREAT BODILY INJURY AND ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL AND IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL. INVESTIGATORS DID NOT GIVE A MOTIVE FOR THE ATTACK.

CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER LETTER TO SAVE POST OFFICE JKB 11/29/10

  • THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER DRAFTING A LETTER TO THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE, ASKING THEM TO KEEP THE DOWNTOWN POST OFFICE OPEN, PROMPTED BY RUMORS THAT IT IS POTENTIALLY BEING CONSIDERED FOR CLOSURE.

ACCORDING TO USPS SPOKESMAN AGUSTINE RUIZ, THERE IS NO CURRENT PLAN TO CLOSE THE DOWNTOWN OFFICE, BUT POSTAL OFFICIALS DID ADMIT THAT UKIAH IS ON A LIST OF ABOUT 200 POST OFFICES ACROSS THE COUNTRY BEING CONSIDERED FOR POSSIBLE CONSOLIDATION IN 2011. THE CITY COUNCIL WILL VOTE ON WEDNESDAY IF THEY WILL DRAFT AN OFFICIAL LETTER OPPOSING ANY FUTURE PLANS TO CLOSE THE DOWNTOWN LOCATION.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAYS AGENDA WILL BE THE CONSIDERATION OF THE PURCHASE OF 12 APPLE IPADS AT A COST OF MORE THAN $11,000. ACCORDING TO CITY OFFICIALS THE IPADS WILL REDUCE ITS PAPER USAGE, INCLUDING THE MORE THAN $9,100 A YEAR SPENT ON COPIES OF MEETING AGENDAS ALONE.

DEPUTY LAYOFFS TO BE CONSIDERED JKB 11/29/10

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL TACKLE THE TOUGH QUESTION OF WEATHER TO LAYOFF DEPUTIES AT THEIR MEETING TOMORROW.

A LIST OF 14 FILLED JOBS IN THE SHERIFFS OFFICE WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR LAYOFFS AS PROPOSED BY COUNTY CEO CARMEL ANGELO AS A WAY OF CLOSING A PROJECTED $1.3 MILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. THE POSITIONS BEING CONSIDERED INCLUDE 3 DEPUTIES AND 5 SERGEANTS.

THE SUPERVISORS WILL ALSO BE CONSIDERING FINAL APPROVAL ON A LIST OF 22 MENTAL HEALTH LAYOFFS THAT WERE PROPOSED EARLIER THIS MONTH.

SHE IS BELIEVED TO BE WITH HER UNCLE, 44 YEAR OLD CHARLES BERLINGHOFF WHO IS FROM THE SAN BERNANDINO AREA, WITH CONTACTS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. HE IS BEING SOUGHT ON A $100,000 FELONY WARRANT AND IS KNOWN TO HAVE MADE THREATS AGAINST LAW ENFORCEMENT VIA EMAIL. A $10,000 REWARD HAS BEEN OFFERED FOR INFORMATION THAT LEADS TO HIS ARREST. HE IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE ADULT, 5 FEET 11 INCHES TALL, 185 POUNDS WITH BROWN SHAVED HAIR AND BROWN EYES. HE HAS A LARGE TATTOO ON HIS RIGHT SHOULDER OF A TREE WITH A RAVEN BIRD IN IT. HE WAS LAST SEEN DRIVING A GRAY 1987 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS 4D, WITH CALIFORNIA LICENSE PLATE NUMBER 2DNX546. JEAN MARIE BERLINGHOFF IF DESCRIBED AS A WHITE FEMALE JUVENILE, 5 FOOT 2 INCHES TALL, 120 POUNDS WITH BLACK HAIR, AND BLUE EYES. SHE HAS SMALL BLACK GAUGES IN BOTH EARS AND A QUARTER SIZED BIRTHMARK ABOVE HER FIGHT KNEE. MANY OF THE STORES IN UKIAH OPENED HOURS EARLIER THAN NORMAL THIS MORNING TO SHOWCASE THEIR DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING SALES. SHOPPERS BEGAN LINING UP LATE LAST NIGHT IN ORDER TO SCORE BIG SAVINGS AT SOME LOCAL RETAILERS AND PARKING HAS BECOME AN ISSUE AT MANY OF THE SHOPPING CENTERS AROUND TOWN. LAW ENFORCEMENT IS OUT IN FORCE THIS MORNING, LOOKING FOR THOSE SHOPPERS WHO MAY BE IN TOO MUCH OF A HURRY TO CASH IN ON THE BIGGEST RETAIL SALES DAY OF THE YEAR. SHOPPERS AND THOSE WHO HAVE TO WORK THIS MORNING ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTRA CAUTION WHEN DRIVING IN CONGESTED AREAS.

BODY OF KAYAKER FOUND JKB 11/26/10

  • THE BODY OF A MISSING KAYAKER WAS FOUND ON WEDNESDAY, THE DAY AFTER HE WAS REPORTED MISSING.

56 YEAR OLD DONNIE KELLY FOSTER OF MOUNTAIN VIEW SET OUT IN HIS 7 FOOT WHITEWATER KAYAK NEAR MENDOCINO BAY AT AROUND 3 PM TUESDAY. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING AFTER HE FAILED TO RETURN AT AROUND 5:30 PM. A SEARCH THAT EVENING FAILED TO LOCATE HIM. A COAST GUARD HELICOPTER SPOTTED HIS BODY FLOATING IN BREWERY GULCH JUST SOUTH OF BIG RIVER BEACH AT AROUND 9 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING. HIS KAYAK WAS FOUND APPROXIMATELY 75 YARDS FROM HIS BODY. FOSTER WAS NOT WEARING A LIFE JACKET OR WET SUIT. OFFICIALS SAY HIS RIVER KAYAK WAS ILL SUITED FOR OCEAN CONDITIONS.

PROPANE TANKER ACCIDENT JKB 11/16/10

  • IT WAS A TOUGH BEGINNING TO THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY TRAVEL WEEKEND WHEN A PROPANE TANKER OVERTURNED ON HIGHWAY 101 AT BROWNS CORNER IN WILLITS WEDNESDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO POLICE THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN A FLAT BED TOW TRUCK, PULLED IN FRONT OF THE TANKERER FROM BAECHTEL ROAD AT AROUND 10 AM. THE FORCE OF THE COLLISION CAUSED TO PROPANE TANKER TO OVERTURN INTO THE SOUTHBOUND LANE WHERE IS STRUCK A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY 86 YEAR OLD BARBARA KLEPPEN OF WILLITS. THE DRIVER OF THE PROPANE TANKER, 59 YEAR OLD DAVID COX OF KINGSBURG SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. KLEPPEN AND THE DRIVER OF THE TOW TRUCK, 46 YEAR OLD CARMON GIRON OF WILLITS WERE NOT INJURED. NO PROPANE LEAKED DURING THE ACCIDENT, BUT AN ESTIMATED 100 TO 150 GALLONS OF DIESEL WAS SPILLED ON THE HIGHWAY. THE ACCIDENT SHUT DOWN BOTH LANES OF HIGHWAY 101 AND TRAFFIC HAD TO BE DIVERTED TO BAECHTEL ROAD, TRIGGERING BACK UPS SEVERAL MILES LONG IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FOR ALMOST 8 HOURS. THE SLOWDOWN LED TO A 3 CAR COLLISION NORTH OF WILLITS AT AROUND 12:40 PM IN WHICH 5 PEOPLE SUFFERED MINOR TO MODERATE INJURIES WHEN A VEHICLE FAILED TO NOTICE THAT TRAFFIC HAS STOPPED. HIGHWAY 101 WAS REOPENED SHORTLY AFTER 5:30 PM.

PRISON SENTENCE FOR SHOOTING JKB 11/26/10

  • A CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN WAS SENTENCED IN COURT WEDNESDAY FOR THE SHOOTING OF ANOTHER MAN THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING IN 2008.

46 YEAR OLD PATRICK MCDANIEL SR WAS FOUND GUILTY IN OCTOBER 2009 OF ATTEMPTED VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER AND OTHER ENHANCEMENTS FOR THE PISTOL WHIPPING AND SHOOTING OF PATRICK OCONNOR SR IN FRONT OF OCONNORS NEIGHBORS HOUSE. MCDANIEL FLED TO LAS VEGAS AFTER THE SHOOTING AND WAS CAPTURED BY U.S. MARSHALS THE FOLLOWING MONTH. CITING THE CALLUS NATURE OF THE CRIME, LAKE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE STEPHEN O. HEDSTROM, SENTENCED MCDANIEL TO THE UPPER LIMIT OF 20 YEARS IN STATE PRISON.

RESCUERS WERE UNABLE TO REACH THE STRANDED STUDENTS SUNDAY NIGHT BECAUSE OF THE CONDITIONS AND OPTED TO LAUNCH A RESCUE EFFORT ON MONDAY MORNING WHILE ADVISING THE TEENS TO REMAIN IN THEIR VEHICLES OVERNIGHT. 4 OF THE STUDENTS WHO WERE DRESSED FOR THE WINTER CONDITIONS WALKED APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES TO WHERE THE RESCUE PARTIES WERE STAGED, ARRIVING AT AROUND 11 PM. THE FOLLOWING MORNING, SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAMS USING SNOW MOBILES WERE ABLE TO REACH THE REMAINING 8 STUDENTS. ALL 12 WERE SAFELY RETURNED TO THEIR FAMILIES.

  • AN OAKLAND MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH AN ALLEGED KIDNAP AND RAPE OF A 22YEAR OLD CLEARLAKE WOMAN.

THE VICTIM CONTACTED SHERIFFS DEPUTIES AFTER RETURNING FROM A LABOR CAMP IN KELSEYVILLE. SHE STATED SHE HAD ACCOMPANIED A FRIEND TO THE CAMP TO PICK UP A CAR HE HAD BOUGHT. WHEN THEY ARRIVED, HER FRIEND TOLD HER HE HAD TO GO BACK TO LAKEPORT AND LEFT HER THERE WITH SEVERAL OTHER MEN. SHE VOLUNTARILY WENT WITH THE MEN INTO A DWELLING TO SMOKE MARIJUANA WHILE WAITING FOR HER FRIEND TO RETURN. DURING THAT TIME AT LEAST ONE OF THE MEN ASKED HER FOR SEXUAL FAVORS AND THE OTHERS BLOCKED HER EXIT WHEN SHE REFUSED. SHE REPORTED THAT SHE WAS HELD AT THE CAMP AGAINST HER WILL AND WAS MOLESTED AND RAPED BY ONE OR MORE OF THE MEN THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT. ONE OF THE MEN FINALLY DROVE HER TO A KELSEYVILLE GAS STATION THE NEXT DAY. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET A RIDE HOME AND CALL POLICE. 22 YEAR OLD LUIS ANTONIO CALVILLIO WAS IDENTIFIED AS ONE OF THE SUSPECTS. HE WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD ON A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS BAIL AND AN IMMIGRATION HOLD. ADDITIONAL ARRESTS IN THE CASE ARE EXPECTED.

25 YEAR OLD ZYLER RIDLEY WAS REPORTEDLY SEEN CRAWLING ON HIS HANDS AND KNEES THROUGH THE CLOTHING RACKS JUST BEFORE 1 PM WEDNESDAY.   • 1960S SINGER SONGWRITER JOAH BAEZ WAS INJURED WHEN SHE FELL OUT TREE HOUSE AT HER HOME IN WOODSIDE LAST WEDNESDAY.

  • A MULTI AGENCY EFFORT RESULTED IN THE ARREST OF A MAN AUTHORITIES SAY STOLE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM 4 VICTIMS IN THE HOPLAND SHO-KA-WAH CASINO PARKING LOT LATE YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO POLICE THE VICTIMS MET WITH THE SUSPECT TO GET A RIDE TO LOS ANGELES AT AROUND 11 AM. SOMETIME DURING THE MEETING THE MEN GOT INTO A CONFRONTATION AND THE SUSPECT ROBBED THE VICTIMS AT GUNPOINT OF 5 TO $10,000 IN CASH AND PERSONAL PROPERTY. HE THEN FLED THE SCENE IN HIS PICK UP TRUCK. THE VICTIMS CONTACTED TRIBAL POLICE, WHO IN TURN CONTACTED THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, UKIAH POLICE AND CHP. WITH THE HELP OF A PASSING MOTORIST AND A CHP HELICOPTER, THE SUSPECTS TRTUCK WAS LOCATED ON HIGHLAND AVENUE. HE ABANDONED THE VEHICLE AND FLED ON FOOT. INSIDE THE TRUCK, POLICE FOUND TWO HANDGUNS, ONE RIFLE AND 25 POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA. 34 YEAR OLD RAMON CELEDON OF WILLITS WAS CAPTURED A SHORT TIME LATER BY A K-9 OFFICER AFTER A BRIEF SEARCH IN THE HILLS OF WEST UKIAH. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL AND IS BEING HELD ON $75,000 BAIL.

4 ARRESTED DURING POT BUST JKB 11/19/10

  • 4 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED WHEN THE MENDOCINO MAJOR CRIMES TASK FORCE RAIDED WHAT THEY BELIEVE TO BE A PROCESSING PLANT FOR MARIJUANA IN POTTER VALLEY WEDNESDAY.

AUTHORITIES THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A SMALL INDOOR GROW AT THE LOCATION, BUT THE 300 POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA SEIZED INDICATES THE LOCATION WAS BEING USED AS A PROCESSING FACILITY FOR SEVERAL OTHER GARDENS. 36 YEAR OLD ZANE MCGINTY AND 63 YEAR OLD MICHAEL CAMPBELL BOTH OF YAKIMA WASHINGTON, AND POTTER VALLEY RESIDENTS, 41 YEAR OLD ISAAC CAMPBELL AND 50 YEAR OLD DIANE OCALLAGHAN WERE ARRESTED AT THE SCENE. ALL HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH CULTIVATION AND POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA FOR SALE.

HIT & RUN ARREST JKB 11/19/10

  • A UKIAH WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER A HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT LAST WEEK.

THE VICTIM CALLED POLICE AT AROUND NOON LAST THURSDAY TO REPORT THAT THEIR VEHICLE HAD BEEN REAR-ENDED ON WAUGH LANE NEAR TALMAGE ROAD. THEY STATED THAT THEY FOLLOWED THE OTHER VEHICLE AFTER IT DID NOT STOP TO THE MOTEL 6 PARKING LOT WHERE A PASSENGER FLED THE SCENE ON FOOT. RESPONDING POLICE CONTACTED THE DRIVER, 23 YEAR OLD GAVRIEL HERNANDEZ, WHO INITIALLY SAID THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAD BEEN DRIVING THE CAR. UNDER FURTHER QUESTIONING, SHE ADMITTED THAT SHE HAD BEEN DRIVING, BUT LIED BECAUSE SHE DID NOT HAVE A LICENSE OR INSURANCE. HERNANDEZ WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR HIT AND RUN AND DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE. ADDITIONAL CHARGES OF PROVIDING FALSE INFORMATION TO A POLICE OFFICER COULD BE PENDING.

PURSE SNATCHING ARREST JKB 11/19/10

  • AN ELDERLY LEGGET MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO STEAL A WOMANS PURSE IN THE UKIAH DENNYS PARKING LOT LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO THE VICTIM, SHE WAS SITTING IN HER CAR OUTSIDE THE RESTAURANT WHEN SHE WAS APPROACHED BY 63 YEAR OLD RICHARD CHRISTENSEN AT AROUND 2 AM. HE MOTIONED FOR HER TO ROLL DOWN HER PASSENGER WINDOW TO LIGHT HIS CIGARETTE, AND GRABBED HER PURSE FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND FLED WHEN SHE DID. THE VICTIM GAVE CHASE AND CHRISTENSEN DROPPED THE PURSE. HE THEN RAN TO HIS VEHICLE AND SAT INSIDE, WHERE POLICE FOUND HIM A SHORT TIME LATER. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON CHARGES OF THEFT.

THE LETTER WHICH CLAIMS ITS FROM THE PROMOTIONS DEPARTMENT OF THE GATES GROUP CORPORATION, SAYS THE RECIPIENT HAS WON $120,000 BY RANDOMLY SHOPPING AN A NUMBER OF POPULAR STORES. THE LETTER ALSO INCLUDES A REALISTIC LOOKING CHECK IN THE AMOUNT OF $4,010.30. THE LETTER INSTRUCTS THE VICTIM TO DEPOSIT THE CHECK IN THEIR ACCOUNT TO COVER THE NEARLY $3000 IN PROCESSING FEES IN ORDER TO RELEASE THE REST OF THE MONEY. THE CHECK OF COURSE IS BOGUS, AND THE VICTIM IS OUT WHATEVER MONEY THEY SENT TO REDEEM THEIR PRIZE. ANYONE THAT RECEIVES SUCH A LETTER SHOULD CONTACT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
