SAN RAFAEL OFFICER INJURED AT DUI CHECKPOINT JKIB 11/29/10

  • A SAN RAFAEL MOTORCYCLE POLICE OFFICER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A NOVATO MAN TRYING TO AVOID A DUI CHECKPOINT WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

43 YEAR OLD GUILLERMO GARCIA RODRIQUEZ WAS HEADED TOWARD THE CHECKPOINT WHEN HE STOPPED HIS SUV, PUT IT IN REVERSE AND RAMMED INTO OFFICER CHRISTOPHER SWEENEYS MOTORCYCLE. SWEENY WAS PARKED AT A GAS STATION WITH OTHER OFFICERS A SHORT DISTANCE BEFORE THE CHECKPOINT. HE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL, TREATED AND RELEASED. RODRIQUEZ WAS ARRESTED FOR FELONY DRUNK DRIVING AND BOOKED INTO THE MARIN COUNTY JAIL.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED JKB 11/29/10

  • A MOTORCYCLIST SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES WHEN HE CRASHED ON HIGHWAY 29 AT THE COYOTE GRADE SUNDAY EVENING.

AN OFF-DUTY FIREFIGHTER HAPPENED UPON THE INJURED RIDER WHO WAS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT AROUND 5:30 PM. THE UNIDENTIFIED RIDER WAS CONSCIOUS BUT SEVERELY INJURED. INVESTIGATORS SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE COLLISION, BUT THAT IT APPEARED THAT ONLY THE MOTORCYCLE AND RIDER WERE INVOLVED. THE VICTIM WAS AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE COUNTY. NO WORD ON HIS CONDITION.

WITNESSES SOUGHT TO PROPANE TRUCK ACCIDENT JKB 11/29/10

  • THE WILLITS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS LOOKING FOR WITNESSES WHO MAY HAVE SEEN THE ACCIDENT BETWEEN A FLAT BED TOW TRUCK AND A PROPANE TANKER AT BROWNS CORNER THAT SLOWED TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY 101 FOR NEARLY 8 HOURS ON WEDNESDAY.

THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT OVERTURNED THE FULLY LOADED PROPANE TANKER, WHICH IN TURN STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO FIRE OF PROPANE LEAK, BUT MORE THAN 100 GALLONS OF DIESEL FUEL WAS SPILLED FROM THE OVERTURNED TANKER. ANYONE WHO WITNESSED THE COLLISION IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE WILLITS POLICE DEPARTMENT.

4 ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY JKB 11/29/10

  • 4 MEN WERE ARRESTED AFTER THEY TRIED TO RE-POSSES SOME MARIJUANA GROWING EQUIPMENT IN LAYTONVILLE LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS, THE OWNER OF THE PROPERTY, GREG WAHLEN, SAID HE HAD BEEN PARTNERS IN A MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION WITH JASON ASHTON AND HAD RECENTLY PURCHASED GROWING EQUIPMENT FROM HIM FOR $6000. ASHTON WAS DEMANDING ADDITIONAL PAYMENT FOR THE EQUIPMENT AND WAHLEN REFUSED. ASHTON, ALONG WITH 3 OTHER MEN, PULLED UP TO WAHELNS DETACHED GARAGE IN TWO PICK UP TRUCKS AT AROUND 1 PM TUESDAY, FORCED ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING AND BEGAN REMOVING THE EQUIPMENT. WAHLEN CALLED POLICE AND THE 4 SUSPECTS WERE ARRESTED AT THE SCENE AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON BURGLARY CHARGES.

THEFT ARREST JKB 11/29/10

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED ON THEFT CHARGES AFTER HIS MOM TURNED HIM IN TO POLICE LAST WEDNESDAY.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO A HOME ON NORTH STATE STREET AT AROUND 6 PM. A WOMAN REPORTED THAT HER SON HAD STOLEN CLOTHING FROM KOHLS DEPARTMENT STORE. 18 YEAR OLD TYLER PERKINS ADMITTED TO THE THEFT AND HAD POSSESSION OF THE STOLEN ITEMS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON $15,000 BAIL. THE STOLEN MERCHANDISE WAS RETURNED TO KOHLS.

ASSAULT ARREST JKB 11/29/10

  • TWO REDWOOD VALLEY MEN WERE INJURED WHEN THEY WERE ATTACKED BY A UKIAH MAN WIELDING A WOODEN STICK THANKSGIVING EVENING.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON PINE RIDGE ROAD AT AROUND 7:30 PM. WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY WERE TOLD BY SEVERAL WITNESSES THAT THE TWO VICTIMS, AGES 49 AND 26, HAD BEEN ASSAULTED AND BEATEN BY 29 YEAR OLD ARMONDO GALINDO. ONE OF THE VICTIMS WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. THE OTHER HAD TO BE AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. GALINDO WAS ARRESTED FOR BATTERY CAUSING GREAT BODILY INJURY AND ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL AND IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL. INVESTIGATORS DID NOT GIVE A MOTIVE FOR THE ATTACK.

CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER LETTER TO SAVE POST OFFICE JKB 11/29/10

  • THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER DRAFTING A LETTER TO THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE, ASKING THEM TO KEEP THE DOWNTOWN POST OFFICE OPEN, PROMPTED BY RUMORS THAT IT IS POTENTIALLY BEING CONSIDERED FOR CLOSURE.

ACCORDING TO USPS SPOKESMAN AGUSTINE RUIZ, THERE IS NO CURRENT PLAN TO CLOSE THE DOWNTOWN OFFICE, BUT POSTAL OFFICIALS DID ADMIT THAT UKIAH IS ON A LIST OF ABOUT 200 POST OFFICES ACROSS THE COUNTRY BEING CONSIDERED FOR POSSIBLE CONSOLIDATION IN 2011. THE CITY COUNCIL WILL VOTE ON WEDNESDAY IF THEY WILL DRAFT AN OFFICIAL LETTER OPPOSING ANY FUTURE PLANS TO CLOSE THE DOWNTOWN LOCATION.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAYS AGENDA WILL BE THE CONSIDERATION OF THE PURCHASE OF 12 APPLE IPADS AT A COST OF MORE THAN $11,000. ACCORDING TO CITY OFFICIALS THE IPADS WILL REDUCE ITS PAPER USAGE, INCLUDING THE MORE THAN $9,100 A YEAR SPENT ON COPIES OF MEETING AGENDAS ALONE.

DEPUTY LAYOFFS TO BE CONSIDERED JKB 11/29/10

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL TACKLE THE TOUGH QUESTION OF WEATHER TO LAYOFF DEPUTIES AT THEIR MEETING TOMORROW.

A LIST OF 14 FILLED JOBS IN THE SHERIFFS OFFICE WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR LAYOFFS AS PROPOSED BY COUNTY CEO CARMEL ANGELO AS A WAY OF CLOSING A PROJECTED $1.3 MILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. THE POSITIONS BEING CONSIDERED INCLUDE 3 DEPUTIES AND 5 SERGEANTS.

THE SUPERVISORS WILL ALSO BE CONSIDERING FINAL APPROVAL ON A LIST OF 22 MENTAL HEALTH LAYOFFS THAT WERE PROPOSED EARLIER THIS MONTH.
