  • A CLEARLAKE BOY WHO WAS REPORTED MISSING ON TUESDAY EVENING WAS FOUND SAFE AND SOUND.

THE 10 YEAR OLD BOY LEFT THE AREA WHERE HE LIVED ON IS BICYCLE IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING AT AROUND 6 PM. AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH BY THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND MEMBERS OF THE VOLUNTEERS IN POLICING LOCATED THE BOY IN A NEARBY APARTMENT COMPLEX APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR LATER, AND HE WAS RETURNED TO HIS FAMILY.

AMBER ALERT UPDATE JKB 1/20/11

  • A STATEWIDE AMBER ALERT REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR A 4 YEAR OLD BOY WHO WAS ALLEGEDLY KIDNAPPED FROM STANISLAUS COUNTY TUESDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO POLICE 27 YEAR OLD JOSE ESTIBAN RODRIGUEZ ABDUCTED JULIANI CARDENAS WHILE HE WAS WITH HIS GRANDMOTHER IN THE GARAGE OF A HOME IN PATTERSON. THE BOYS MOTHER AND RODRIGUEZ HAD BEEN TOGETHER FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS, BUT SHE STATED THAT SHE HAD NOT SEEN HIM FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS. INVESTIGATORS SAY RODRIGUEZ, WHO HAS AN EXTENSIVE CRIMINAL HISTORY, IS NOT THE BOYS FATHER AND THE MOTIVE BEHIND THE ABDUCTION IS UNKNOWN. RODRIGUEZ WAS LAST SEEN DRIVING A SILVER TOYOTA COROLLA WITH A CALIFORNIA LICENSE PLATE NUMBER OF 6HBW445. POLICE SAY RODRIGUEZ HAS TIES TO SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN NORTHERN AND CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CONTACT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OR THE STANISLAUS COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

URSULINE FINANCE DIRECTOR FOUND DEAD JKB 1/20/11

  • THE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS AT URSULINE HIGH SCHOOL IN SANTA ROSA, AND THE HUSBAND OF SONOMA COUNTY SUPERVISOR SHIRLEE ZANE, WAS FOUND DEAD IN THE BACK YARD OF HIS HOME ON TUESDAY.

A FAMILY MEMBER FOUND THE BODY OF 56 YEAR OLD PETER KINGSTON JUST BEFORE 5 PM. INVESTIGATORS SAY IT APPEARS HIS DEATH WAS THE RESULT OF A SUICIDE. KINGSTON WAS IN CHARGE OF THE FINANCES FOR THE URSULINE CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOR GIRLS. THE SCHOOL ANNOUNCED IN THE FALL THAT IT WOULD CLOSE ITS DOORS FOR GOOD AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR BECAUSE IT DID NOT HAVE THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO STAY OPEN. SOURCES CLOSE TO KINGSTON SAID HE HAD TAKEN THE NEWS OF THE CLOSURE VERY HARD.

WILLITS MAN MURDER TRIAL TO BEGIN IN VIRGINIA JKB 1/20/11

  • THE 2ND DEGREE MURDER TRIAL OF A WILLITS MAN WHO CLAIMS HE HELPED HIS FRIEND COMMIT SUICIDE IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN VIRGINIA NEXT MONTH.

25 YEAR OLD PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS PAUL STEPHEN BRICKER IS ACCUSED OF STABBING 45 YEAR OLD CHIEF PETTY OFFICER GERARD CURRAN TO DEATH AT A VIRGINIA BEACH PARK IN JULY OF 2009. ACCORDING TO BRICKER, CURRAN ASKED HIM TO HELP HIM COMMIT SUICIDE AND MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A HOMICIDE SO HIS WIFE AND FAMILY WOULD NOT FORFEIT ANY BENEFITS. BRICKER TOLD POLICE HE REFUSED AT FIRST, BUT FINALLY AGREED WHEN CURRAN BECAME MORE INSISTENT. THE TWO MEN SPENT NEARLY A MONTH SCOUTING LOCATIONS AND PLANNING THE EVENT BEFORE MEETING IN THE PARK ON JULY 29TH. BRICKER TOLD INVESTIGATORS CURRANS WIFE WAITED ON A NEARBY PARK BENCH WHILE CURRAN STRANGLED HIMSELF UNCONSCIOUS. BRICKER THEN STATED HE STABBED CURRAN ONCE IN THE CHEST, GRABBED SEVERAL ITEMS TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A ROBBERY AND LEFT. ACCORDING TO A CORONERS REPORT, CURRAN HAD NO DEFENSIVE WOUNDS ON HIS BODY. BRICKERS TRIAL WILL BEGIN FEBRUARY 16TH.

CLOSURE CONSIDERATION OF DOWNTOWN POST OFFICE ANNOUNCED JKB 1/20/11

  • AFTER MONTHS OF SPECULATION, THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE HAS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE CONSIDERING CLOSING THE DOWNTOWN UKIAH POST OFFICE AND CONSOLIDATING OPERATIONS WITH THE POSTAL CARRIER ANNEX ON SOUTH ORCHARD AVENUE.

UKIAH MAYOR MARI RODIN MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OFFICIAL AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, SAYING WORD WAS RECEIVED FROM THE POSTAL SERVICE IN A LETTER TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. ACCORDING TO A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE POSTAL SERVICE, PUBLIC MEETINGS WOULD BE SCHEDULED AS REQUIRED PRIOR TO CLOSING THE DOWNTOWN LOCATION.

COUNTY ADVISED TO CONTRIBUTE MORE TO RETIREMENT JKB 1/19/11

  • A CONSULTANTS REPORT HAS ADVISED COUNTY OFFICIALS TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION BY MORE THAN $4 MILLION DOLLARS THIS YEAR.

IN COMPILING AN ACTUARIAL ON THE COUNTYS OBLIGATIONS, BUCK CONSULTANTS OF NEW YORK IS ADVISING THE COUNTY CONTRIBUTE $13,166,000 DOLLARS THIS YEAR TO THE RETIREMENT ACCOUNT, DUE IN PART TO A NEGATIVE INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE FROM 2 AND 3YEARS AGO WHEN THE COUNTY DID NOT CONTRIBUTE ENOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH THE OBLIGATION. IF APPROVED, THE DOLLAR AMOUNT WOULD REPRESENT MORE THAN 19% OF THE COUNTYS PAYROLL. AT THEIR MEETING LAST NIGHT, THE RETIREMENT BOARD OPTED NOT TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHETHER THEY WOULD ENCOURAGE SUPERVISORS TO FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDATION OR NOT.

CRITICS HOWEVER, SAY THE NEW METERS CAN LEAD TO HIGHER POWER BILLS, INTERFERE WITH COMMUNICATION DEVICES, COULD POSE POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS AND CAN LEAVE CONSUMERS VULNERABLE TO COMPUTER HACKERS AND UNSCRUPULOUS ONLINE MARKETERS. THERE ARE CURRENTLY ABOUT 12,000 SMART METERS IN USE STATEWIDE, AND PG&E SAYS THEY WILL CONTINUE INSTALLING THE DEVICES DESPITE THE MORATORIUMS IN 3 COUNTIES AND 11 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CITIES.
