WOMAN KILLED IN CRASH JKB 2/21/11

· A HONEYDEW WOMAN WAS KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON WILDER RIDGE ROAD IN SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT COUNTY LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 23 YEAR OLD LAUREN SANDERS WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASONS SHE ALLOWED HER VEHICLE TO DRIFT OFF THE ROADWAY WHERE IT COLLIDED WITH A TREE JUST BEFORE 8 PM WEDNESDAY. SANDERS WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT AND WAS PARTIALLY EJECTED FROM THE VEHICLE, STRIKING THE TREE. SHE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. A 15 YEAR OLD FEMALE PASSENGER IN HER VEHICLE WAS NOT INJURED.

DRUG BUSTS JKB 2/21/11

· AN ONGOING EFFORT TO CRACK DOWN ON ILLICIT DRUG SALES IN LAKE COUNTY RESULTED IN SEVERAL ARRESTS, THE SEIZURE OF 9 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, 30 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA AND $700 IN CASH LAST WEEK.

PROBATIONS AND WARRANT SEARCHES ON TUESDAY AND FRIDAY ENDED IN THE ARREST OF 50 YEAR OLD DARRELL COLLINS OF LUCERNE, AND SEVERAL OTHER SUBJECTS WHO WERE NOT IDENTIFIED. ALONG WITH THE DRUGS AND CASH, POLICE ALSO SEIZED A STUN GUN, RADIO SCANNERS, PARAPHERNALIA AND ITEMS USED IN THE PACKAGING AND SALES OF DRUGS. THE TASK FORCE IS CONTINUING THEIR OPERATIONS, AND ARE ASKING THE PUBLIC TO REPORT ANY SUSPECTED DRUG ACTIVITY ANONYMOUSLY VIA THEIR TIP LINE AT 263-3663.

THEFT ARREST JKB 2/21/11

· A SANTA ROSA MAN WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THEFTS IN THE CLEARLAKE AREA LATE LAST WEEK.

30 YEAR OLD JEREMY LEE WHITE CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF DEPUTIES BY APPEARING TO BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE WHILE OUTSIDE THE KONOCTI VISTA CASINO IN LAKEPORT AT AROUND 3 AM THURSDAY. A SEARCH OF HIS PERSON TURNED UP A SMALL AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE, AND A 200,000 VOLT TASER. IN A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE, DEPUTIES FOUND A GPS UNIT, A LAPTOP COMPUTER AND A LEATHER LAPTOP BAG THAT HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN IN THE CLEARLAKE AREA FEBRUARY 14TH. WHITE WAS FOUND TO BE ON BAIL FOR SEVERAL FELONY CASES PENDING AGAINST HIM IN BOTH LAKE AND SONOMA COUNTIES. AS A RESULT, HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL WITH THE ENHANCED BAIL AMOUNT OF A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS.

GOVERNOR ORDERS AN END TO STATE SWAG JKB 2/21/11

· IN HIS ONGOING EFFORT TO CUT $363 MILLION DOLLARS IN GOVERNMENT SPENDING BY NEXT FISCAL YEAR, GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN HAS ORDERED AN END STATE TAX PAYER GIFT GIVEAWAYS OR SWAG ITEMS.

STUFF WE ALL GET, OR SWAG GIVEN OUT BY STATE AGENCIES INCLUDE PENS, KEY CHAINS, COFFEE MUGS, SQUEEZE TOYS, AND OTHER TRINKETS, ORIGINALLY MANUFACTURED AS PROMOTIONAL TOOLS FOR BUSINESSES. A RECENT STATEWIDE REVIEW FOUND THAT CALIFORNIA SPENT MORE THAN $7.5 MILLION DOLLARS IN TAX PAYER MONEY ON SUCH ITEMS BETWEEN 2007 AND 2010. THE BIGGEST OFFENDER WAS THE BUSINESS, TRANSPORTATION & HOUSING AGENCY WHICH SPENT $5,088,037 DOLLARS ON ITEMS GOVERNOR BROWN STATED MOST LIKELY ENDS UP IN LANDFILLS.

POWER OUTAGES JKB 2/21/11

· PG&E CREWS WERE STILL WORKING YESTERDAY TO RESTORE POWER TO SOME CUSTOMERS WHO LOST THEIR ELECTRICITY DUE TO THE HEAVY SNOWFALL LATE LAST WEEK.

MORE THAN 2600 CUSTOMERS IN THE LOWER LAKE, COBB, HIDDEN VALLEY AND MIDDLETOWN AREA WERE STILL WITHOUT POWER AS OF SATURDAY NIGHT. THEY HAD BEEN WITHOUT POWER SINCE THURSDAY MORNING WHEN MORE THAN 28 INCHES OF SNOW FELL IN SOME PARTS OF LAKE COUNTY. MOST EVERYONE WAS BACK ONLINE BY SUNDAY EVENING.

THOMPSON COMMUNITY FORUMS JKB 2/21/11

· NORTH COAST REPRESENTATIVE MIKE THOMPSON WILL BE HOLDING A COMMUNITY FORUM ON THE NATIONS BURGEONING DEBT, AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS BY THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATIONS FISCAL COMMISSION IN LAKE COUNTY TOMORROW.

THOMPSON WILL ALSO BE TAKING DEBT CUTTING SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENT FROM THE AUDIENCE. THE FORUM WILL BE HELD AT THE LAKE COUNTY BAORD OF SUPERVISORS CHAMBERS FROM 6:30 TO 8 PM.

GORDON WAGENET DIES JKB 2/21/11

· THE PATRIARCH OF THE WAGENET FAMILY, AND LONG TIME MENDOCINO COUNTY RESIDENT AND BUSINESS MAN GORDON WAGENET PASSED AWAY ON FEBRUARY 11TH, JUST TWO MONTHS SHY OF HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY.

WAGENET FOUNDED 101 REDWOOD INCORPORATED IN 1952, WHICH CONTINUED IN OPERATION FOR 53 YEARS. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE OF 67 YEARS, CATHARINE, 5 CHILDREN AND THEIR SPOUSES, INCLUDING FORMER 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR HAL WAGENET, AND A NUMBER OF GRANDCHILDREN. A CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE LITTLE LAKE GRANGE ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26TH AT 2 PM.

LAST WORKER OF BAY & GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE DIES JKB 2/21/11

· A MAN BELIEVED TO BE THE LAST SURVIVING EMPLOYEE WHO WORKED ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY BRIDGE AND THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE HAS DIED.

HARRY FOGLE PASSED AWAY FEBRUARY 10TH OF NATURAL CAUSES AT THE AGE OF 97. FOGEL GOT A JOB PAITING THE TOWERS ON THE BAY BRIDGE IN 1935 AND TRANSFERRED TO THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE AS A TOWER PAINTER THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HE RETIRED AT A GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE PAINTER 40 YEARS LATER.

RECALL PETITION FOR PT. ARENA CITY COUNCIL FILED JKB 2/21/11

· A GROUP OF CITY RESIDENTS HAVE FILED A RECALL PETITION WITH THE MENDOCINO COUNTY CLERK-RECORDERS OFFICE TO HAVE 4 OF THE 5 PT. ARENA CITY COUNSEL MEMBERS REMOVED FROM OFFICE.

THE PETITION IS BEING SPEARHEADED BY FORMER COUNCIL MEMBER BRAIN RIEHL, WHO QUIT AFTER FORMER CITY CLERK ADMINISTRATOR CLAUDIA HILLARY WAS FIRED. NAMED IN THE PETITION ARE COUNCIL MEMBERS JOE RIBOLI, LAUREN SINNOTT, DAVID INGHAM, AND ELOSIA OROPEZA. OREPEZA HUSBAND, MAYOR TERRY HUGHEY WAS NOT NAMED IN THE RECALL IN PART BECAUSE HE IS NEW TO THE COUNCIL, TAKING OFFICE JANUARY 25, REPLACING RIEHL. TO PUT THE RECALL TOA VOTE, THE PETITION WOULD NEED TO COLLECT SIGNATURES FROM 30% OF THE CITYS 246 REGISTERED VOTERS, OR 74 PEOPLE.
