HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 11 INCHES IS POSSIBLE FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON INTO TOMORROW MORNING, ABOVE THE 3000 FOOT LEVEL.

IN LAKE COUNTY A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM TONIGHT FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 4000 FEET, AND A WINTER STORM WATCH WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3000 FEET UNTIL TOMORROW AFTERNOON. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 10 TO 18 INCHES IS POSSIBLE FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 5000 FEET, AND 5 TO 9 INCHES AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 4000 FEET. 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW MAY DROP AS LOW AS 2500 FEET BY TUESDAY NIGHT. TRAVELERS HEADED INTO THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS IN BOTH COUNTIES ARE ADVISED TO BE PREPARED FOR EXTREME WINTER WEATHER DRIVING CONDITIONS.

ASSAULT ARREST JKB 2/15/11

  • A REDWOOD VALLEY MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY BEATING HIS GIRLFRIEND AND THEN ABANDONING HER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT SUNDAY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, 32 YEAR OLD PRIEST MARTINEZ BECAME ENRAGED FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON AT HIS 19 YEAR OLD GIRLFRIEND OF 2 YEARS, THREW HER TO THE GROUND AND BEGAN KICKING HER. HE THEN PUT HER IN A CAR, DROVE AWAY FROM THE SCENE OF THE ASSAULT AND FORCED HER OUT OF THE VEHICLE. AUTHORITIES WERE ALERTED TO THE INCIDENT AFTER THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER BY A PERSON WHO FOUND HER ALONGSIDE ROAD I IN REDWOOD VALLEY SHORTLY BEFORE 3 AM. DEPUTIES ARRESTED MARTINEZ AT HIS HOME A SHORT TIME LATER AND HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL DUE TO A PAROLE VIOLATION HOLD.

GANG ACTIVITY IN FORT BRAGG JKB 2/15/11

  • FORT BRAGG POLICE SAW A RISE IN GANG ACTIVITY AND VIOLENCE LAST WEEK THAT THEY BELIEVE IS RELATED TO A FIGHT THAT OCCURRED AT THE CV STAR CENTER JANUARY 28TH.

AS A RESULT OF THAT FIGHT, 21 YEAR OLD MARICRUZ ALVAREZ-CARILLO WAS ARRESTED FOR THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF ANOTHER WOMAN AFTER SHE ATTACKED HER WITH A HATCHET. ON SATURDAY, A TEAM OF 5 FORT BRAGG POLICE OFFICERS CONDUCTED AN OPERATION SPECIFICALLY TARGETING AREAS WHERE THAT HAVE SEEN AN INCREASE IN GANG ACTIVITY. 4 JUVENILES WERE ARRESTED. ONE, FOR CARRYING A CONCEALED WEAPON, AND THE OTHERS FOR NARCOTICS AND PROBATION VIOLATIONS. AUTHORITIES ARE ASKING THAT THE PUBLIC REPORT ANYTHING THEY BELIEVE TO BE GANG ACTIVITY SO POLICE CAN ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT ANY OF THE RECENT GANG ACTIVITIES IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR DRIVING SKILLS JKB 2/15/11

  • A CLEARLAKE WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO SHOW OF HER DRIVING SKILLS TO A CAR LOAD OFf TEENAGERS FRIDAY.

40 YEAR OLD TAMMY MANINGER TOLD POLICE SHE WAS TRYING TO SHOW HER KIDS HOW TO GET AIR IN HER VW RABBIT SHE WAS DRIVING. ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS, MANINGER WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND ON 10TH STREET AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL, STRUCK 3 PARKED VEHICLES, A FIRE HYDRANT, AND PROPANE TANK. HER CAR EVENTUALLY CAME TO REST ON ITS NOSE IN A VERTICAL POSITION WITH THE REAR TIRES IN THE AiR WEDGED BETWEEN THE GARAGE DOOR OF A HOME AND ANOTHER VEHICLE. MANINGER AND THE 3 TEENS IN HER CAR WERE NOT INJURED. SHE WAS ARRESTED FOR WILLFUL CHILD ENDANGERMENT AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL.

STABBING JKB 2/15/11

  • AN ARGUMENT OVER THE FAILED DELIVERY OF MARIJUANA, LED TO THE STABBING OF ONE MAN AND THE ARREST OF ANOTHER LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE LOCATION IN THE 3900 BLOCK OF NORTH STATE STREET ON THE REPORT OF A STABBING THAT HAD JUST OCCURRED AT AROUND 5:30 PM. BOTH THE VICTIM AND SUSPECT HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER BY FAMILY MEMBERS BY THE TIME OFFICERS ARRIVED, AND AN INVESTIGATION CONTINUED AT THE HOSPITAL. THE VICTIM, 18 YEAR OLD MICHAEL PERRY TOLD POLICE THAT HE ARGUED WITH 18 YEAR OLD JORGE OLEA WHEN OLEA REFUSED TO DELIVER MARIJUANA TO HIM. OLEA RESPONDED BY PULLING OUT A LOCK BLADE STYLE KNIFE AND SLASHING HIM UNDER HIS LEFT ARM NEAR THE ARM PIT. OLEA SUFFERED A CUT ON HIS THUMB, AND A WITNESS WHO BROKE UP THE FIGHT WAS CUT ON THE ELBOW. PERRY WAS TREATED AND RELEASED. OLEA WAS BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. HIS BAIL WAS SET AT $60,000.

MORE CUTS TO SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT PROPOSED JKB 2/15/11

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL BE GOING OVER THE MID YEAR BUDGET REPORT AT THEIR MEETING TODAY THAT COULD LEAD TO ANOTHER CONFRONTATION BETWEEN COUNTY CEO CARMEL ANGELO AND SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN.

ANGELO IS PROPOSING THE ELIMINATION OF ANOTHER 7 POSITIONS FROM THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT TO CLOSE AN $800,000 DEPARTMENT DEFICIT. SHERIFF ALLMAN HAS INDICATED THAT HE PLANS TO FIGHT THE PROPOSAL. ACCORDING TO SHERIFF ALLMAN, HE HAS RETAINED OUTSIDE LEGAL COUNSEL IN ORDER TO PREVENT PUBLIC SAFETY FROM BEING COMPROMISED. ANGELO IS SCHEDULED TO PRESENT THE MID YEAR BUDGET REPORT AT 1:45 PM. THE REPORT IS EXPECTED TO INCLUDE UPDATES FROM BOTH ALLMAN AND HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AGENCY DIRECTOR STACY CRYER, WHOS DEPARTMENTS CARRY THE LARGEST BUDGET DEFICITS.

STABBING BETWEEN FRIENDS JKB 2/15/11

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER STABBING HIS FRIEND WITH A POCKET KNIFE NUMEROUS TIMES LATE LAST NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO POLICE THE VICTIM, 20 YEAR OLD THOMAS ANDREWS AND THE SUSPECT THOMAS KNIGHT WERE PLAYING VIDEO GAMES AT ANDREWS HOME ON LAWS AVENUE WHEN HE ASKED HIM TO LEAVE AT AROUND 11:30 BECAUSE KNIGHT WAS INTOXICATED AND EATING ALL THE FOOD IN THE HOUSE. KNIGHT REFUSED AND ANDREWS ATTEMPTED TO PUSH KNIGHT OUTSIDE. THE TWO BEGAN WRESTLING AND AT SOME POINT, KNIGHT PULLED OUT A POCKET KNIFE AND STABBED ANDREWS NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE LEG AND STOMACH AREA. HE THEN FLED THE SCENE. ANDREWS WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. KNIGHT WAS LOCATED ON SOUTH STATE STREET AND ARRESTED. HE WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF THE WEAPON USED IN THE ASSAULT AND ADMITTED TO THE STABBING. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. HIS BAIL WAS SET AT $30,000.

MOTORISTS IN HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES ARE BEING ADVISED TO DRIVE WITH EXTRA CAUTION, AND RESIDENTS ARE ADVISED TO SECURE LOOSE ITEMS AROUND THEIR HOMES SUCH AS LIGHT WEIGHT OBJECTS AND PATIO FURNITURE.

DOMESTIC ARREST JKB 2/14/11

  • A CALPELLA MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ASSAULTING HIS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND THURSDAY MORNING.

AN ANONYMOUS CALLER NOTIFIED POLICE OF THE INCIDENT AT AROUND 9:30 IN THE MORNING. WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT THE LOCATION IN REDWOOD VALLEY, THEY FOUND THE 21 YEAR OLD, 8 MONTH PREGNANT VICTIM WHO HAS SUFFERED INJURIES TO HER ARM, KNEES, AND THIGH. SHE REPORTED THAT THE FATHER OF HER UNBORN CHILD, 21 YEAR OLD CLIFFORD YAPLE HAD STRUCK HER WITH HIS FIRST IN THE LEG, THEN DRAGGED HER ACROSS THE FLOOR CAUSING THE INJURIES. A MEDICAL EXAMINATION DETERMINED THAT THE UNBORN CHILD WAS UNINJURED. YAPLE WAS CONTACTED AT HIS HOME A SHORT TIME LATER AND ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON CHARGES OF DOMESTIC BATTERY. HE IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL DUE TO A PROBATION VIOLATION.

ROLL OVER ACCIDENT JKB 2/14/11

  • A CLEARLAKE MAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED IN A ROLL OVER ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 29 EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 42 YEAR OLD SANTIAGO HERNANDEZ WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED JUST NORTH OF THE NAPA LAKE COUNTY LINE, WHEN HE ALLOWED HIS VEHICLE TO DRIFT OFF THE ROADWAY AND STRIKE AN INCLINED EMBANKMENT AT AROUND 6:30 AM. THE COLLISION CAUSED HIS SUV TO OVERTURN ONTO THE ROADWAY AND HE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES. HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. NO WORD WAS RELEASED ABOUT HIS CONDITION. HERNANDEZ WAS ARRESTED FOR DUI OF ALCOHOL BEFORE BEING RELEASED FOR TREATMENT.

STABBING AT GROUP HOME JKB 2/14/11

  • A 17 YEAR OLD RESIDENT AT THE LIFEWORKS GROUP HOME IN BOONVILLE HAD TO BE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER BEING ASSAULTED BY ANOTHER RESIDENT OF THE FACILITY LAST NIGHT.

WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED THEY FOUND THE VICTIM IN THE KITCHEN AREA OF THE HOME WITH SEVERAL STAB WOUNDS TO HIS HEAD AND FACE, AND THE 16 YEAR OLD SUSPECT BEING DETAINED IN THE BATHROOM OF THE HOME BY STAFF MEMBERS. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, THE TWO BOYS HAD BEEN JOKING ABOUT FIGHTING FOR MOST OF THE DAY. THE VICTIM SAID HE BEGAN TO GET CONCERNED THAT THE SUSPECT WAS GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT BEATING HIM UP, SO HE STOPPED TALKING TO HIM EARLIER IN THE DAY. AT AROUND 8 PM, WHEN ALL THE RESIDENTS AND STAFF WENT TO THE KITCHEN AREA TO EAT DINNER, THE VICTIM DECIDED TO SKIP THE MEAL AND CLEAN THE BATHROOM. WHILE HE WAS CLEANING, THE SUSPECT RUSHED INTO THE BATHROOM AND BEGAN STABBING HIM IN THE HEAD AND FACE WITH A STEAK KNIFE. STAFF MEMBERS BROKE UP THE FIGHT AND DETAINED THE SUSPECT. HE WAS BOOKED INTO JUVENILE HALL ON CHARGES OF ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, VIOLATION OF PROBATION AND A HATE CRIME. THE VICTIM WAS AIRLIFTED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER, TREATED AND RELEASED.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, BROOKES WAS DRIVING EAST ON MAIN STREET IN DOWNTOWN KELSEYVILLE WHEN HE DROVE INTO THE ONCOMING LANE OF TRAFFIC AND COLLIDED WITH A PICK UP TRUCK DRIVEN BY 41 YEAR OLD MICHELLE DUNIA JUST AFTER 7 PM THURSDAY. DUNIA OR HER 3 PASSENGERS WERE NOT INJURED. BROOKES LEFT THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT AND OFFICERS FOUND HIM ABOUT 3 BLOCKS AWAY ON KONOCTI ROAD. HE WAS ARRESTED FOR DUI AND RELEASED AFTER POSTING $5000 BAIL. AN ADDITIONAL CHARE OF MISDEMEANOR HIT AND RUN IS EXPECTED TO BE ADDED WHEN THE CASE IF FILED IN LAKE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT.

  • A NAPA COUNTY JAIL INMATE SUFFERED CRITICAL INJURIES AFTER HE WRAPPED HIMSELF IN TOILET PAPER AND SET HIMSELF ON FIRE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

29 YEAR OLD VERNON CANNON USED AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET IN HIS CELL TO SPARK THE BLAZE AND ADDED BEDDING AND CLOTHING TO FUEL THE FLAMES. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, CANNON WAS A PATIENT AT NAPA STATE HOSPITAL FOR THE MENTALLY ILL UNTIL SEPTEMBER WHEN HE WAS CHARGED WITH AN ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON AND TRANSFERRED TO THE COUNTY JAIL. ABOUT 100 INMATES HAD TO BE EVACUATED FROM THEIR CELLS DUE TO SMOKE CONCERNS AFTER A GUARD FOUND CANNON ON FIRE AT AROUND 8 PM WEDNESDAY. FIRE DAMAGE WAS CONFINED TO THE CELL. CANNON WAS AIRLIFTED TO THE BURN UNIT AT UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. NO WORD YET ON HIS CONDITION.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY FUGITIVE CAUGHT IN UKIAH JKB 2/11/11

  • A FORTUNA MAN BEING SOUGHT FOR THE BRUTAL BEATING OF AN 18 YEAR OLD WITH A BASEBALL BAT WAS APPREHENDED IN UKIAH ON TUESDAY.

ACTING ON A TIP, THE FORTUNA POLICE DEPARTMENT CONTACTED AUTHORITIES IN UKIAH WHO THEN BEGAN A SEARCH FOR 27 YEAR OLD ADAM KENNETH GRAY. UKIAH POLICE OFFICERS LOCATED GRAYS CAR AT A MOTEL PARKING LOT ON TUESDAY AND TOOK HIM INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT. GRAY IS WANTED IN THE BEATING OF AN 18 YEAR OLD VICTIM WHO SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AFTER BEING STRUCK NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE HEAD AND BODY WITH A BASEBALL BAT JANUARY 28TH.

  • LAKEPORTS CITY ATTORNEY WAS ARRESTED LAST NIGHT FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL.

53 YEAR OLD STEVE BROOKES OF KELSEYVILLE WAS PULLED OVER THE CHP AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY JUST AFTER 8 PM. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WITH BAIL SET AT $5000. HE WAS RELEASED A SHOT TIME LATER. ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT THE INCIDENT THAT LED TO THE ARREST HAVE NOT BEEN MADE AVAILABLE.

  • AS EXPECTED THE NORTH COAST GRAPE CROP TOOK A HUGE HIT IN 2010, DUE TO A COOLER THAN NORMAL SUMMER, A SUDDEN HEAT WAVE JUST BEFORE HARVEST AND PLUMMETING GRAPE PRICES.

THE COMBINATION OF A SOFT MARKET AND AN UNEXPECTEDLY LARGE CROP CAUSED PRICES IN MENDOCINO COUNTY TO DROP 17.1% ON AVERAGE TO $1,092 A TON, WITH COUNTY GROWERS TAKING IN JUST $71.8 MILLION DOLLARS COMPARED TO $78.5 MILLION THE PREVIOUS YEAR. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT BETWEEN 35 TO 50% OF MENDOCINO COUNTY GROWERS LOST MONEY IN 2010. IN LAKE COUNTY, PRICES FELL 8.8% ON AVERAGE TO $1,129 A TON, WITH GROWERS TAKING IN $35.9 MILLION DOLLARS COMPARED TO $39.2 MILLION THE YEAR BEFORE. 29 YEAR OLD ALEJANDRO AURELIO ARIAS WAS ALLEGEDLY TRAVELING CLOSE TO 100 MILES AN HOUR WHEN HE COLLIDED WITH A CAR BEING DRIVEN BY 41 YEAR OLD CHARLANE HILL. HILL DIED AT THE SCENE WHILE 2 OF HER 3 PASSENGERS WERE SEVERELY INJURED. ARIAS WAS ARRESTED THE NIGHT OF THE CRASH, BUT WAS NOT BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL UNTIL 6 MONTHS LATER BECAUSE OF INJURIES HE SUFFERED IN THE CRASH AND THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACCIDENT WAS STILL ONGOING. ARIAS WAS CHARGED WITH 2ND DEGREE MURDER, VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER AND 3 COUNTS OF RECKLESS DRIVING. HE HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO ALL CHARGES. 17 YEAR OLD MITCH CARLSON ACKNOWLEDGED THAT LEAVING THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT, AFTER HITTING 83 YEAR OLD MIGUEL SANCHEZ WAS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE. THE SANCHEZ FAMILY PLEADED FOR JAIL TIME. SONOMA COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE RAIMA BALLINGER CITED CARLSONS LACK OF A CRIMINAL RECORD AND THAT THE GOAL OF JUVENILE COURT WAS MORE TOWARDS REHABILITATION THAN PUNISHMENT BEFORE HANDING DOWN THE SENTENCE. IN ADDITION TO THE 3 YEARS PROBATION, CARLSON WAS ORDERED TO PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE, PARTICIPATE IN A RESTORATIVE JUSTICE-TYPE PROGRAM TO PAY BACK THE SANCHEZ FAMILY FOR THEIR MONETARY LOSSES, GIVEN A 9 OCLOCK CURFEW AND BANNED FROM DRIVING FOR THE DURATION OF HIS PROBATION. AFTER THE HEARING, AN ATTORNEY FOR THE SANCHEZ FAMILY CALLED FOR INDEPENDENT REVIEWS OF THE CASE BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, GRAND JURY AND FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS AUTHORITIES. THE ATTORNEY ALSO STATED THAT THE FAMILY PLANS TO SUE CARLSON FOR COMPENSATORY AND PUNITIVE DAMAGES IN CIVIL COURT.

  • AN OAKLAND MAN WHO CLAIMED HE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT AND KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND WHILE TRYING TO SHOOT HIS INJURED DOG WILL BE IN COURT NEXT WEEK TO SEE IF THERE IS ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO TRY HIM FOR MURDER.

45 YEAR OLD SAMUEL CAMPOS IS ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AND KILLING 41 YEAR OLD JOSEPHINE NAVARRO OF SAN LEANDRO WHILE SHE WAS LAYING IN BED WITH THE DOG JANUARY 2ND. THE COUPLE HAD BEEN STAYING IN A CAMP TRAILER IN WILLITS WHEN THE SHOOTING OCCURRED. CAMPOS CLAIMED THE PAIR HAD ARGUED OVER THE DOG BEING INJURED WHILE HE WAS PLAYING WITH IT EARLIER IN THE DAY. AT SOME POINT AFTER THE ARGUMENT, HE CLAIMED HE ATTEMPTED TO SHOOT THE DOG TWICE, BUT MISSED IT BOTH TIMES. THE 2ND SHOT STRUCK NAVARRO IN THE CHEST AND SHE DIED AT THE SCENE. HE DID NOT REPORT THE DEATH UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. CAMPOS IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR FOR A PRELIMINARY HEARING ON NEXT FRIDAY.

FIRE DISPLACES FAMILY JKB 2/10/11

  • AN EARLY MORNING FIRE AT THE ROBINSON RANCHERIA IN NICE INJURED ONE PERSON AND HAS TEMPORARILY DISPLACED A FAMILY OF 8 WHO WERE STAYING IN THE HOME.

THE FIRE WAS REPORTED JUST BEFORE 6 AM WEDNESDAY AT THE HOME ON FLICKERS CIRCLE.   • THE VICTIM WHO WAS BEATEN, TORTURED, SHOT AND LEFT HOGTIED IN FRONT OF HIS LAKEPORT HOME TOOK THE STAND FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY IN THE TRIAL AGAINST ONE OF HIS ATTACKERS.

RONALD GREINER IDENTIFIED 59 YEAR OLD THOMAS LOYD DUDNEY AS ONE OF THE TWO MEN WHO ATTACKED HIM IN HIS HOME OCTOBER 20TH OF 2009. GREINER TESTIFIED THE ATTACK WAS ON BEHALF OF A THIRD PARTY IN A DISPUTE OVER MARIJUANA. DUDNEY FACES 11 FELONY CHARGES IN THE ATTACK, INCLUDING ATTEMPTED MURDER, MAYHEM, ROBBERY AND ASSAULT. CHARGES WERE DROPPED AGAINST A 2ND SUSPECT IN THE ATTACK LAST MONTH DUE TO A LACK OF EVIDENCE. THE TRIAL IS CONTINUING TODAY.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 18 YEAR OLD GARRETT MABERY WAS RIDING HIS MOUNTAIN BIKE WESTBOUND ON THE ASPHALT SHOULDER JUST WEST OF MOUNTAIN VIEW ROAD WHEN HE DRIFTED INTO THE PATH OF A WESTBOUND VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN BY 61 YEAR OLD RICHARD HOLMAN OF BOONVILLE JUST AFTER 5 PM. HOLMAN ATTEMPTED TO AVOID THE COLLISION BY SWERVING AND BRAKING, BUT COLLIDED WITH THE REAR WHEEL OF THE BIKE, EJECTING MABERY ONTO THE SHOULDER. MAYBERY, WHO WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF PROTECTIVE GEAR, SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AND WAS TAKEN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. NO WORD YET ON HIS CONDITION.

73 YEAR OLD FRANCISCO MENDOZA CASTILLO WAS CONVICTED OF THE 2ND DEGREE MURDER OF JORGE SUAREZ AND THE ATEMPTED MURDER OF FRANCISCO PARRA AND RAMIRO SUAREZ. HE WAS SENTENCED TO 26 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON ON MARCH 2ND 1990. ACCORDING TO PROSECUTORS, CASTILLO AND HIS BROTHER HAD BEEN DRINKING WHEN THEY GOT INTO AN ARGUMENT WITH THE 3 MEN, LEFT THE RESIDENCE AND THEN RETURNED ARMED WITH A SHOTGUN AND 38 CALIBER PISTOL. FRANCISCO CASTILLO THEN BEGAN SHOOTING THE UNARMED VICTIMS WITHOUT PROVOCATION. THE BOARD OF PRISON HEARINGS DENIED HIS PAROLE ON THE GROUNDS THAT HE STILL PRESENTED AN UNREASONABLE RISK OF DANGER TO THE PUBLIC IF RELEASED. HE WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE AGAIN UNTIL THE YEAR 2014.

OFFICER INJURED DURING PROTEST JKB 2/9/11

  • TWO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES MONDAY FOLLOWING A PROTEST AT THE CALTRANS OFFICES IN EUREKA.

THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING CALTRANS PLAN TO IMPROVE A 1 MILE SECTION OF HIGHWAY 101 AS IT PASSES THROUGH RICHARDSON GROVE STATE PARK, TO ALLOW LARGER TRUCKS TO PASS THROUGH THE AREA. CALTRANS OFFICIALS SAY THAT NO OLD GROWN REDWOODS WILL BE CUT OR DAMAGED BY THE REALIGNMENT PROJECT. THE PROTESTORS CLAIM OTHERWISE AND SAY IT WILL ENCOURAGE OTHER FORMS OF DEVELOPMENT IN PROTECTED WOODS IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY. DURING THE PROTEST, A METAL COFFEE MUG STRUCK ONE OFFICER, WHILE ANOTHER WAS DOUSED WITH HOT COFFEE. AUTHORITIES SAY THE PROTESTORS VANDALIZED THE BUILDING WITH GRAFFITI, KICKED WINDOWS AND YELLED OBSCENITIES. 12 OF THE ESTIMATED 100 PROTESTORS WERE ARRESTED FOR REFUSING TO LEAVE THE CALTRANS BUILDING AFTER 5 PM. 6 OF THEM CHAINED THEMSELVES TOGETHER INSIDE THE BUILDING USING METAL SLEEVES AND HAD TO BE CUT APART. BURGLARY ARREST JKB 2/9/11

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE WAS CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF BURGLARIZING AN ACQUAINTANCES GARAGE LAST NIGHT.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME IN THE 5600 BLOCK OF EASTSIDE CALPELLA ROAD JUST AFTER 9 PM ON A REPORT THAT A BURGLARY HAD BEEN INTERRUPTED IN PROGRESS AND THE VICTIM AND SUSPECT WERE FIGHTING IN THE YARD. THE SUSPECT, LATER IDENTIFIED AS 29 YEAR OLD RYANN KOTTERMAN HAD FLED THE SCENE BY THE TIME DEPUTIES ARRIVED. THE MALE VICTIM WAS FOUND WITH INJURIES TO HIS HEAD, FACE AND CHEST FROM BEING HIT BY KOTTERMAN WITH HIS FISTS AND POSSIBLY A LARGE STICK. A FAMILY MEMBER TOOK HIM TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WHERE HE WAS TREATED AND RELEASED. KOTTERMAN WAS APPREHENDED ABOUT A HALF HOUR LATER AND FOUND IN POSSESSION OF A METAL SHURIKEN THROWING STAR. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES AND IS BEING HELD ON $60,000 BAIL.

  • THREE HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE WOMEN WERE INJURED IN A GOLF CART CRASH ON FRIDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 48 YEAR OLD DEBORAH SELNA WAS DRIVING THE CART SOUTHBOUND ON NORTHSHORE DRIVE AT AN UNSAFE SPEED, WHEN, DUE TO HER LEVEL OF INTOXICATION, ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO LEAVE THE PAVED PORTION OF THE ROADWAY AT AROUND 9:25 PM. SHE WAS UNABLE TO SLOW OR STOP THE CART AS IT TRAVELED ACROSS A GRASSY AREA AND COLLIDED WITH A TREE. THE GOLF CART OVERTURNED AND CAME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN AGAINST ANOTHER TREE. SELNA, AND HER TWO PASSENGERS, 50 YEAR OLD CARRIE WESTON, AND 51 YEAR OLD ELIZABETH SAYERS ALL SUFFERED MODERATE TO MAJOR INJURIES AND WERE TAKEN TO LOCAL AREA HOSPITALS FOR TREATMENT. SELNA WAS LATER ARRESTED FOR FELONY DUI.

MAN DIES DURING HALF MARATHON JKB 2/8/11

  • A MAN COMPETING IN THE KAISER PERMANENTE SAN FRANCISCO HALF MARATHON HELD IN SAN FRANCISCOS GOLDEN GATE PARK, COLLAPSED AND DIED NEAR THE FINISH LINE ON SUNDAY.

HE WAS IDENTIFIED YESTERDAY AS 36 YEAR OLD PETER HASS OF ORINDA. WITNESSES SAID OTHER RUNNERS AND SPECTATORS BEGAN PERFORMING CPR ON HASS BECAUSE MEDICAL STAFF DID NOT ARRIVE IMMEDIATELY. OFFICIALS SAY PARAMEDICS WERE DELAYED BECAUSE DISPATCHERS WERE GIVEN THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS OF WHERE HASS HAD COLLAPSED. HE FAILED TO RESPOND TO LIFE SAVING EFFORTS AND WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. HIS CAUSE OF DEATH IS STILL UNKNOWN. MORE THAN 10,000 RUNNERS PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT.

THE FIRST OF TWO QUAKES THAT STRUCK 2 MILES NORTH OF THE GEYSERS ON SUNDAY THAT WAS REPORTED AS BEING 3.2 IN MAGNITUDE WAS DOWNGRADED TO A 2.7, WHILE THE 2ND QUAKE THAT WAS INITIALLY REPORTED AS BEING 3.2 IN MAGNITUDE WAS UPGRADED TO A 3.3 MAGNITUDE QUAKE.   • TWO SCHOOLS IN WEST SANTA ROSA WERE LOCKED DOWN YESTERDAY WHEN A HOME BURGLARY SUSPECT RAN THROUGH THE CAMPUS OF ONE OF THE SCHOOLS WHILE TRYING TO ELUDE POLICE.

WILLOWSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND OLIVET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WERE LOCKED DOWN AS A PRECAUTION WHEN A BURGLARY SUSPECT RAN THROUGH THE WILLOWSIDE CAMPUS DURING THE MORNING SNACK BRAKE. 18 YEAR OLD VICTOR ALBA WAS ARRESTED NEAR THE SCHOOL WHEN HIS TRUCK WAS IDENTIFIED AS THE SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE THAT HAD JUST COME FROM A NEARBY HOME BURGLARY AT AROUND 11 AM. A 2ND SUSPECT RAN FROM THE VEHICLE AND THROUGH THE CAMPUS PROMPTING THE LOCKDOWN. 20 YEAR OLD LEONARDO BAUTISTA WAS IDENTIFIED AS THE 2ND SUSPECT AND A SEARCH THAT INCLUDED OFFICERS FROM SEVERAL AGENCIES AND A CHP HELICOPTER ENSUED. THE LOCKDOWN WAS LIFTED AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR WHEN IT WAS DETERMINED THAT BAUTISTA HAD FLED THE AREA. HE WAS CAPTURED AT ABOUT 7 PM NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF SEBASTOPOL AND STONY PONT ROADS.

SEARCH FOR BANK ROBBER CONTINUES JKB 2/8/11

  • THE SEARCH IS CONTINUING FOR A SUSPECT THAT ROBBED THE CHASE BANK IN FORT BRAGG LAST THURSDAY, AND POLICE SAY THEY BELIEVE THE MAN RESPONSIBLE MAY BE FROM OUT OF THE AREA.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, OFFICERS WHO HAVE EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOWN AND ITS RESIDENTS, DO NOT RECOGNIZE THE SUSPECT AFTER CAREFUL SCRUTINY OF SURVEILLANCE VIDEOS THAT WERE TAKEN AT THE TIME OF THE ROBBERY, INDICATING HE MAY NOT BE FROM THE AREA. THE SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE ADULT, 6 FEET TALL, APPROXIMATELY 220 POUNDS. HE WAS WEARING A BLACK ZIP UP WINDBREAKER WITH A HOOD, A RED T-SHIRT, DARK PANTS, A BEIGE HAT AND SUNGLASSES.   • A UKIAH MAN WANTED ON A PROBATION VIOLATION WHO TRIED TO GIVE POLICE THE SLIP WAS TRIPPED UP BY THE GOOD INTENTIONS OF A FRIEND ON SATURDAY.

  • AN AUBURN WOMAN DIED AFTER TRYING TO SAVE HER DOG THAT WAS SWEPT INTO THE OCEAN AT PORTUGUESE BEACH JUST NORTH OF BODEGA BAY ON FRIDAY.

THE CITY PLANNING COMMISSION IS NOW REVIEWING THOSE APPLICATIONS. THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL ALSO VOTED UNANIMOUSLY LAST NIGHT TO APPROVE SOLE SOURCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORTS FOR BOTH COSTCO AND THE PROPOSED WALMART EXPANSION TO A SINGLE FIRM. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATES ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF PUTTING TOGETHER THE EIR FOR THE WALMART EXPANSION. ACCORDING TO CITY OFFICIALS, HAVING THE SAME FIRM COMPLETE THE EIR FOR COSTCO SHOULD MAKE THE PROCESS FASTER AND MORE COST EFFECTIVE BECAUSE A LOT OF THE ANALYSIS HAS ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED.

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO SIGN A LETTER OF SUPPORT TO EXPLORE THE IDEA OF HAVING A MEAT PROCESSING PLANT SOMEWHERE IN THE COUNTY.

First district supervisor carre brown put the item on the agenda that included a letter supporting an effort to find funding to develop a business plan to attract potential investors. The letter CITES A FEASIBILITY STUDY BY THE UC COOPERATIVE EXTENSION, AND THE MEAT COMMITTEE OF THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCE CORPORATION OF MENDOCINO COUNTY THAT WAS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD LAST MAY, THAT INDICATED VERY PROMISING ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO THE COUNTY. THE LETTER APPROVED TUESDAY GIVES SUPPORT FOR THE 2ND PHASE OF STUDY TO LOOK AT THE PROS AND CONS OF HAVING SUCH A FACILITY IN THE COUNTY.
