  • THE BODY OF A MAN WHO WAS FOUND AT THE WILDWOOD CAMPGROUND NEAR FORT BRAGG LAST WEEK HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 50 YEAR OLD AREA TRANSIENT JEFFREY MALCOLM AHART.

AHARTS BODY WAS FOUND WEDNESDAY BY A PAIR OF CAMPGROUND RESIDENTS WHO WERE WALKING THEIR DOG. AN INITIAL INVESTIGATION FOUND NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF TRAUMA. AN AUTOPSY WAS PERFORMED LAST WEEK, BUT THE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL NOT BE RELEASED PENDING THE RESULTS OF TOXICOLOGY FINDINGS.

HIKERS RESCUED JKB 3/28/11

  • 3 TEENAGE HIKERS CAMPING NEAR LAKE PILLSBURY WERE FOUND AFTER A LARGE SCALE SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORT OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE ONSET OF EXTREME WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS PROMPTED FAMILY MEMBERS TO REPORT THE BOYS, AGES 16 TO 18, AS POSSIBLY MISSING AND IN TROUBLE. THEIR HIKING ITINERARY HAD THEM SCHEDULED TO RETURN BY SATURDAY, BUT THE ONSET OF MULTIPLE STORMS LATE LAST WEEK CAUSED REASON FOR CONCERN AND A SEARCH EFFORT WAS LAUNCHED ON THURSDAY. THE BOYS WERE LOCATED AT AROUND NOON ON SATURDAY, IN A MAKESHIFT SHELTER. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE BOYS WERE FINE AND HAD BEEN MAKING THEIR WAY OUT OF THE WILDERNESS UNDER THEIR OWN POWER AND ON SCHEDULE, DESPITE THE ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS.

BROTHERS ARRESTED IN BURGLARY OF DEAD RELATIVES HOME JKB 3/28/11

  • TWO BROTHERS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED SON SUSPICION THAT THEY BURGLARIZED THE COVELO HOME OF A RECENTLY DEAD RELATIVE LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, 18 YEAR OLD MICHAEL AND 21 YEAR OLD LEE JOAQUIN OF COVELO, BROKE INTO THE HOME OF THE LATE STEPHANIE EDWARDS ON WEDNESDAY, A WEEK AFTER HER FUNERAL. INVESTIGATORS SAY THEY MADE OFF WITH JEWELRY, NINTENDO GAMES, A FIREARM AND A PAIR OF NEW JOGGING SHOES, BUT OVERLOOKED $1400 IN CASH STASHED IN A DRAWER. THE JOAQUIN BROTHERS WERE DESCRIBED AS DISTANT COUSINS OF EDWARDS MOTHER. EDWARDS DIED MARCH 10TH OF COMPLICATIONS FROM LUPUS.

CLEAR LAKE TO PEAK TODAY JKB 3/28/11

  • U.S. GEOLOGICAL OFFICIALS ARE PREDICTING THAT THE WATER LEVEL IN CLEAR LAKE WILL PEAK SOMETIME TODAY.

THE LAKE HIT 9 FOOT ON THE RUMSEY SCALE OR FLOOD STAGE ON FRIDAY, AND IT IS PREDICTED TO REACH A HIGH MARK OF 9.5 FEET BY TODAY. A FLOOD WARNING ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAST WEEK, REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR LAKE COUNTY. THE LAKE COUNTY PUBLIC SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLOSED BOAT LAUNCHES IN THE COUNTY PARKS DUE TO THE HIGH LAKE LEVEL LAST WEEK.

TRANSIENT ARRESTED AT MASONITE JKB 3/28/11

  • A TRANSIENT MAN FROM FLORIDA WAS ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO DO A LITTLE RECYCLING WITH ITEMS TAKEN FROM THE OLD MASONITE SITE ON THURSDAY.

A PAIR OF FISH AND GAME WARDENS FIRST NOTICED 25 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER SUMMERFIELD REMOVING ITEMS FROM THE MASONITE PROPERTY AND CALLED POLICE JUST AFTER NOON. WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED, SUMMERFIELD WAS FOUND PUSHING A SAFEWAY SHOPPING CART THAT CONTAINED A STAINLESS STEEL SINK, STAINLESS STEEL BOXES, PIECES OF LARGE GAUGE ALUMINUM ELECTRICAL CABLE, ROMEX WIRE AND AN ALUMINUM STREET SIGN. HE STATED HE TOOK THE ITEMS FROM THE MASONITE PROPERTY AND WAS EN-ROUTE TO A RECYCLING CENTER WHEN HE WAS STOPPED. A CHECK DETERMINED THAT SUMMERFIELD WAS WANTED ON A NON EXTRADITABLE WARRANT OUT OF FLORIDA FOR THEFT. HE WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WITH BAIL SET AT $15,000.

BILL INTRODUCED FOR TSUNAMI DAMAGE JKB 3/28/11

  • NORTH COAST ASSEMBLYMAN WES CHSBRO HAS INTRODUCED A PAIR OF BILLS TO HELP DEL NORTE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES TO PAY FOR DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE MARCH 11TH TSUNAMI.

ONE BILL SEEKS 100% COMPENSATION FROM THE STATE OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL COSTS OF RESPONDING TO THE TSUNAMI EMERGENCY, WHILE A 2ND BILL WOULD PROVIDE TAX RELIEF FOR THOSE WHO SUFFERED LOSSES OF INCOME FROM THE EVENT. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WOULD PAY APPROXIMATELY 75% OF THE COSTS OF RESPONDING TO THE EMERGENCY, IF A FEDERAL DISASTER IS DECLARED, BUT THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED YET. ASSEMBLY BILL 1428 SEEKS FULL REIMBURSEMENT FROM THE STATE FOR THE COSTS LOCAL GOVERNMENTS SPENT TO RESPOND TO THE EMERGENCY, EVEN IF A FEDERAL DISASTER IS NOT DECLARED.
