HIGHWAY 101 RE-OPENED JKB 4/4/11

  • HIGHWAY 101 5 MILES NORTH OF GARBERVILLE WAS RE-OPENED TO ONE WAY CONTROLLED TRAFFIC AT 2 AM THIS MORNING, 5 DAYS AFTER A MASSIVE MUD SLIDE SHUT DOWN THE ROADWAY.

ACCORDING TO CALTRANS, MOTORISTS SHOULD EXPECT 30 MINUTE DELAYS. NO FURTHER CLOSURES ARE EXPECTED TO OCCUR UNLESS SIGNIFICANT SLIDE ACTIVITY RESUMES. CREWS WILL CONTINUE TO WORK 24 HOURS A DAY TO COMPLETE THE SLIDE REMOVAL AND REPAIR THE ROADWAY THAT BUCKLED UNDERNEATH THE WEIGHT OF TONS OF DEBRIS LAST WEDENSDAY.

FATAL FIRE JKB 4/4/11

  • A CLEARLAKE RIVERAS RESIDENT DIED IN A EARLY MORNING FIRE ON FRIDAY.

FIREFIGHTERS WERE CALLED TO THE HOME AT AROUND 2 AM FRIDAY. THE STRUCTURE WAS ALMOST FULLY INVOLVED BY THE TIME THEY ARRIVED. AFTER BATTLING THE BLAZE FOR NEARLY AN HOUR, FIRE PERSONNEL FOUND A DECEASED VICTIM IN THE HOME AND CALLED THE SHERIFF-CORONERS OFFICE. DETECTIVES HAVE DEEMED THE FIRE SUSPICIOUS AND ARE TREATING IT AS A HOMICIDE. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION. THE NAME OF THE VICTIM HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

KAYAKER RESCUED WITH HELICOPTER JKB 4/4/11

  • THE SONOMA COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT USED A HELICOPTER TO RESCUE A STRANDED KAYKER FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE RUSSIAN RIVER NEAR VACATION BEACH IN GUERNEVILLE ON FRIDAY.

THE 53 YEAR OLD FEMALE KAYAKER WAS FOUND CLINGING TO TREES AND STRADDLING HER KAYAK AFTER IT FLIPPED AND BECAME CAUGHT AND PARTIALLY SUBMERGED ON DEBRIS IN THE RIVER AT AROUND 4 PM. A RESCUER WAS LOWERED ON A 100 FOOT LINE FROM THE HELICOPTER AND THE TWO WERE FERRIED TO SHORE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE WOMAN WAS TREATED FOR A DEEP CHILL FROM BEING IN THE COLD WATER, BUT WAS OTHERWISE UNINJURED.

PATIENT RULED INCOMPETENT IN RAPE CASE JKB 4/4/11

  • A PATIENT WHO TRIED TO RAPE A NURSE AT NAPA STATE HOSPITAL LAST MONTH HAS BEEN FOUND NOT MENTALLY COMPETENT TO STAND TRIAL.

NAPA COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE RODNEY STONE MADE THE RULING LAST WEDNESDAY AFTER A PSYCHIATRIST DETERMINED THAT 30 YEAR OLD JULIUS TOBAR WAS A PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIC WITH A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE AND INAPPROPRIATE SEXUAL BEHAVIORS. TOBAR ALLEGEDLY ATTACKED AND TRIED TO RAPE THE NURSE AS SHE CHECKED HIS VITAL SIGNS. SHE WAS RESCUED WHEN CO-WORKERS CAME TO HER AID AND STOPPED THE ATTACK.

PLANES GROUNDED JKB 4/4/11

  • SOUTHWEST AIRLINES GROUNDED 79 OF ITS BOEING 737 AIRCRAFT AND CANCELED 300 FLIGHTS ON SATURDAY AFTER A HOLE TORE OPEN IN THE FUSELAGE OF A FLIGHT TRAVELING FROM PHOENIX TO SACRAMENTO ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

THE CABIN DEPRESSURIZED, BUT THE AIRCRAFT WAS ABLE TO SAFELY MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN YUMA ARIZONA. ONLY ONE OF THE 118 PASSENGERS A BOARD AND A SINGLE MEMBER OF THE CREW SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. IT IS UNCLEAR WHEN THE GROUNDED PLANES WILL BE RETURNED TO SERVICE. CRACKS IN THE FUSELAGES OF 3 OTHER PLANES HAVE REPORTEDLY BEEN FOUND SINCE SATURDAY. A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300 carrying 142 people WAS diverted to Los Angeles because of a burning electrical smell in the passenger cabin ON SUNDAY EVENING.

STABBING ARREST IN COVELO JKB 4/4/11

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR STABBING ANOTHER MAN IN COVELO ON SUNDAY.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE LOCATION ON BIGGAR LANE AT AROUND 2:30 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. THE VICTIM, 41 YEAR OLD NATHAN BURGESS, SAID HE HAD BEEN IN A VERBAL CONFRONTATION WITH 19 YEAR OLD ISRAEL ALVAREZ NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF BIGGAR LANE AND HIGHWAY 162. SOMETIME DURING THE ALTERCATION, ALVAREZ PRODUCED A KNIFE AND STABBED BURGESS ONCE IN THE BACK. HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. WITH THE HELP OF A GOOD PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION FROM THE VICTIM AND AN EYEWITNESS, ALVAREZ WAS LOCATED AND ADMITTED TO STABBING BURGESS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT AND VIOLATION OF PROBATION. HE IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

WATER DISTRICTS VOTE TO MERGE JKB 4/4/11

  • THE REDWOOD VALLEY COUNTY WATER DISTRICT AND THE RUSSIAN RIVER FLOOD CONTROL AND WATER CONSERVATION IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT BOTH VOTED TO COMBINE FORCES LAST WEEK.

AFTER RECEIVING SUPPORT FROM THE PUBLIC AT A MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, THE BOARDS OF BOTH DISTRICTS AGREED TO A MERGER IN ORDER TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE SONOMA COUNTY WATER AGENCY FOR MORE WATER RIGHTS FOR REDWOOD VALLEY. BOTH BOARDS SUPPORTED THE CREATION OF A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF ANNEXATION AND REFORMING AS A NEW UNIFIED ENTITY. THE MERGER WILL HELP IN THE BARGAINING PROCESS IN SECURING INCREASED FUTURE WATER RIGHTS FROM THE SONOMA COUNTY WATER AGENCY.
