LAYTONVILLE MAN ARRESTED IN ALAMEDA MURDER JKB 4/26/11

  • A LAYTONVILLE MAN WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH A ROBBERY AND MURDER THAT TOOK PLACE IN ALAMEDA LAST WEEK.

22 YEAR OLD RICHARD EZELL IS ONE OF 3 SUSPECTS CHARGED IN THE CASE. THE OTHER SUSPECTS, A 22 YEAR OLD FROM ALAMEDA, AND A 26 YEAR OLD FROM HERCULES WERE ALSO TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND CHARGED IN THE MURDER THAT TOOK PLACE LAST WEDNESDAY. POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAMES OF THE OTHER SUSPECTS, THE VICTIM, OR DETAILS ABOUT THE KILLING. EZELL IS BEING HELD AT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY JAIL WITHOUT BAIL.

6 YEAR OLD HIT BY POLICE CAR ON CALL JKB 4/26/11

  • A 6 YEAR OLD SANTA ROSA BOY WAS INJURED WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A POLICE OFFICER HEADING TO AN EMERGENCY CALL WHILE WALKING IN A CROSSWALK OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE CRASH OCCURRED AT 11:10 PM SATURDAY AS THE BOY WAS CROSSING WEST AVENUE AT SEBASTOPOL ROAD WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. ACCORDING TO THE CHP, THE OFFICER WAS RESPONDING TO A REPORT OF A FIGHT AND WAS DRIVING WEST ON SEBASTOPOL ROAD WHEN HE TURNED LEFT ON TO WEST ROAD AND HIT THE BOY, STRIKING HIM WITH THE BUMPER AND KNOCKING HIM TO THE GROUND. THE BOY SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND WAS TAKEN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS TREATED AND RELEASED. THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE CHP.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT JKB 4/26/11

  • A STOCKTON MAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED WHEN THE MOTORCYCLE HE WAS RIDING WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY A PICK UP TRUCK ON HIGHWAY 20 SUNDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 56 YEAR OLD DAVID COSTA WAS RIDING EASTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 20 NEAR HOWARD AVENUE WHEN HE WAS REAR-ENDED BY 22 YEAR OLD BRUCE SCOTT OF LUCERNE JUST BEFORE 9 PM. COSTA WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT OF MAJOR INJURIES. NO WORD YET ON HIS CONDITION. SCOTT WAS NOT CITED FOR THE CRASH.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER MAKING THREATS JKB 4/26/11

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED SATURDAY EVENING AFTER THREATENING TO KILL ANOTHER MAN WITH A KNIFE FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING HIS CIGARETTES.

THE 60 YEAR OLD MALE VICTIM TOLD POLICE THAT 39 YEAR OLD PAUL SMITH THREATENED TO SLIT HIS THROAT OVER THE ALLEGED THEFT AT AROUND 6 PM NEAR THE 1000 BLOCK OF EAST GOBBI STREET. BASED ON THE VICTIMS STATEMENT AND TWO WITNESSES, SMITH WAS LOCATED AND ARRESTED FOR MAKING CRIMINAL THREATS. HE IS BEING HELD ON $15,000 BAIL.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON JKB 4/26/11

  • A 62 YEAR OLD UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO STAB A WOMAN DURING A FIGHT INVOLVING SEVERAL SUBJECTS LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO A MOTORCYCLE SHOP IN THE 3200 BLOCK OF NORTH STATE STREET AT AROUND 4 PM, WHEN SEVERAL PEOPLE BEGAN FIGHTING. WITNESSES STATED THAT DURING THE ALTERCATION, JAMES MONK DRIED TO STAB THE 51 YEAR OLD FEMALE VICTIM WITH A POCKET KNIFE. MONK WAS LOCATED THE NEXT DAY AND ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH AND DEADLY WEAPON AND IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

DRIVING FATALITY SENTENCE JKB 4/26/11

  • A LUCERNE MAN WITH TWO PRIOR DUI CONVICTIONS, AND AN OUT OF STATE ROBBERY CONVICTION, WAS SENTENCED YESTERDAY TO 20 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR AN ALCOHOL FUELED CRASH THAT CLAIMED THE LIFE OF AN ELDERLY NICE MAN.

ACCORDING TO PROSECUTORS, 57 YEAR OLD BARTON FARRIS HAD CONSUMED A HALF GALLON OF VODKA SINCE THE NIGHT BEFORE THE CRASH ON SEPTEMBER 15TH OF 2009. HIS BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL WAS MORE THAN 2 AND A HALF TIME THE LEGAL LIMIT, WHEN HE IGNORED THE WARNING OF FRIENDS AND INSISTED ON DRIVING TO DUI OFFENDERS CLASS THAT HAD BEEN ORDERED FOR A PREVIOUS CONVICTION. FARRIS CROSSED THE CENTERLINE AND SIDESWIPED ANOTHER CAR BEFORE COLLIDING WITH 84 YEAR OLD JACK GREEN HEAD ON. GREEN DIED OF HIS INJURIES SEVERAL WEEKS LATER.

BOS TO DECIDE PAY CUTS TODAY JKB 4/26/11

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL CONSIDER ADOPTING A 20% PAY CUT FOR EMPLOYEES IN THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS, PUBLIC DEFENDERS, ALTERNATE DEFENDERS AND CHILD SUPPORT OFFICES AT THEIR MEETING TODAY.

NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE COUNTY AND THE PUBLIC ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION UNION THAT HAD BEEN GOING ON SINCE LAST YEAR WHEN THE UNIONS LABOR CONTRACT EXPIRED LAST APRIL, HAVE BROKEN DOWN IN RECENT MONTHS, AND AN IMPASSE WAS DECLARED IN DECEMBER. A MEDIATION IN MARCH ALSO FAILED TO RESOLVE THE DIFFERENCES AND THE COUNTY SENT ITS LAST, BEST AND FINAL OFFER TO THE UNION APRIL 5TH. SO FAR, THE UNION HAS NOT RESPONDED TO THAT OFFER. THE BOARD WILL DECIDE TO DAY WHETHER TO IMPOSE THE OFFER. THE BOARD WILL ALSO CONSIDER CHANGING THE HEALTH CARE PLAN FOR COUNTY EMPLOYEES AND EARLY RETIREES TO INCLUDE INCENTIVES TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND LOWER COSTS. BOTH OF THOSE ISSUES ARE SCHEDULED TO BE HEARD LATE THIS MORNING.
