INMATE WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE DIES OF INJURIES JKB 4/27/11

  • A MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL INMATE WHO WAS INTERRUPTED DURING AN ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, HAS DIED OF HIS INJURIES.

A CORRECTIONS DEPUTY FOUND THE 29 YEAR OLD INMATE IN THE PROCESS OF THE SUICIDE ATTEMPT DURING A CELL CHECK LAST THURSDAY EVENING. HE WAS ABLE TO GIVE CPR AND OBTAIN A PULSE AND ESTABLISH BREATHING BEFORE PARAMEDICS ARRIVED, AND THE INMATE WAS TRANSFERRED TO ST. HELENA HOSPITAL. HE DIED OF INJURIES SUFFERED DURING THE ATTEMPT ON MONDAY. A FORENSIC EXAMINATION IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE TODAY. THE INMATES NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

CHEMICAL EXPLOSION INJURES ONE JKB 4/27/11

  • AN AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES ENGINEER WAS BADLY BURNED IN A CHEMICAL EXPLOSION THAT FORCED THE EVACUATION OF THE COMPANYS FOUNTAIN GROVE PARKWAY BUILDING IN SANTA ROSA YESTERDAY.

45 YEAR OLD ENGINEER PATRICK COLBUS WAS LISTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION AS OF LATE TUESDAY. COLBUS, FROM SANTA ROSA, WORKED IN HIGH TECH MATERIALS ENGINEERING AND COATING. A FALLING OBJECT HURT ANOTHER EMPLOYEE WHEN THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED AT AROUND 10:30 AM. 20 OTHERS COMPLAINED OF RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS AND UNDERWENT VOLUNTARY DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES. AGILENT OFFICIALS SAY THEIR CHEMICAL EMERGENCY EXPERTS WERE TRYING TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION.

BOS AND PUBLIC ATTORNEYS REACH AN AGREEMENT JKB 4/27/11

  • A 12TH HOUR AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE MENDOCINO COUNTY PUBLIC ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION AND THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AVERTED THE POSSIBLE IMPLEMENTATION OF A 20% PAY CUT THE SUPES WERE CONSIDERING YESTERDAY.

THE DECISION AFFECTS 32 EMPLOYEES IN THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS, PUBLIC DEFENDERS, ALTERNATE DEFENDERS AND CHILD SUPPORT SERVICES OFFICES. REPRESENTATIVES FOR THE ATTORNEYS UNION TENTATIVELY AGREED TO ACCEPT A 12 AND A HALF PERCENT PAY CUT YESTERDAY MORNING. THE CUTS WILL BRING THE PUBLIC ATTORNEYS UNION INTO LINE WITH OTHER COUNTY DEPARTMENTS, MOST OF WHICH HAVE ALREADY TAKEN A 10% CUT IN PAY.

3.9 MAGNITUDE QUAKE AT GEYSERS JKB /27/11

  • THE GEYSERS WERE RATTLED BY A 3.9 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE YESTERDAY MORNING, THE 11TH QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THAT AREA SINCE JANUARY 1ST.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 10:43 AM AND WAS CENTERED 1 MILE NORTH-NORTH WEST OF THE STEAM FIELDS.

NEW CHARGES IN INDECENT EXPOSURE CASE JKB 4/27/11

  • NEW CHARGES ARE FACING A MIDDLETOWN MAN WHO WAS IN COURT YESTERDAY TO SET A DATE FOR SENTENCING IN A INDECENT EXPOSURE CASE.

29 YEAR OLD DANIEL WOOD WAS CONVICTED LAST MONTH OF MISDEMEANOR INDECENT EXPOSURE AND ANNOYING OR MOLESTING A CHILD FOR EXPOSING HIMSELF TO 2 12 YEAR OLD GIRLS IN AUGUST OF LAST YEAR. PROSECUTORS NOW SAY NEW EVIDENCE SINCE HIS ARREST HAS RESULTED IN AS MANY AS 15 NEW CHARGES INVOLVING CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14. WOOD WAS ORDERED YESTERDAY TO APPEAR APRIL 29TH FOR SENTENCING AND TO A PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION AND ASSIGNMENT ON THE NEW CHARGES.

ANOTHER SMITH TRAVEL EXPENSE FLAP JKB 4/27/11

  • ANOTHER FLAP OVER TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR MENDOCINO COUNTY 4TH DISTRICT SUPERVISOR KENDALL SMITH LED TO A HEATED HALF HOUR DEBATE AT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING YESTERDAY.

SMITH AND COUNTY CEO CARMEL ANGELO WERE SEEKING $1500 IN TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT COSTS FOR SMITH TO ATTEND A NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES OR NACO CONFERENCE IN PORTLAND OREGON IN JULY. 2ND DISTRICT SUPERVISOR JOHN MCCOWEN PULLED THE ITEM FROM THE CONSENT CALENDAR FOR FURTHER DISCUSSION AND ARGUED THE REIMBURSEMENT SHOULD BE DENIED, NOTING THAT THE BOARD VOTED TO END ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH NACO LAST YEAR, BUT RECONSIDERED ONLY BECAUSE OF A PRESCRIPTION PROGRAM IT OFFERED TO COUNTY RESIDENTS. ANGELO REMINDED THE BOARD THAT THEY HAVE DISMISSED THE COUNTYS STATE AND FEDERAL LOBBYISTS IN ORDER TO CUT COSTS, AND THEREFORE HAD NO REPRESENTATION AT SUCH EVENTS. 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR JOHN PINCHES QUESTIONED THE BENEFIT OF NACO MEMBERSHIP. THE REQUEST WAS DENIED ON A VOTE OF 3 TO 2 WITH SUPERVISORS SMITH AND HAMBURG DISSENTING.

GOVERNOR BROWN HALTS NON ESSENTIAL TRAVEL JKB 4/27/11

  • GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN ISSUED A SWEEPING EXECUTIVE ORDER YESTERDAY TO HALT ALL STATE EMPLOYEE TRAVEL THAT IS NOT DEEMED MISSION CRITICAL, IN ORDER TO FURTHER CUT SPENDING IN STATE GOVERNMENT.

THE LATEST EXECUTIVE ORDER COMES A WEEK AFTER HE ORDERED STATE AGENCIES AND DEPARTMENT TO RECOVER MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN UNCOLLECTED SALARY AND TRAVEL ADVANCES. UNDER YESTERDAYS ORDER, NO TRAVEL IS PERMITTED IN OR OUR OT STATE UNLESS IT IS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL OR HAS NO COST TO THE STATE. SINCE TAKING OFFICE GOVERNOR BROWN HAS BEEN ABLE TO CUT SPENDING IN HIS OWN OFFICE BY ABOUT 25%.

MAN ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE JKB 4/27/11

  • A GUALALA MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ATTACKING HIS GIRLFRIEND AT A HOME ON OLD STAGE ROAD SUNDAY EVENING.

ACCORDING TO THE FEMALE VICTIM, SHE AND 25 YEAR OLD AXCEL BERNAL GOT INTO AN ARGUMENT AT AROUND 8 PM. DURING THE ALTERCATION, BERNAL ALLEGEDLY STRUCK HER WITH HIS HANDS AND HELD HER AGAINST HER WILL WHEN SHE TRIED TO LEAVE. HE THEN BEGAN WHIPPING HER WITH A BELT UNTIL HE WAS INTERRUPTED BY A WITNESS YELLING AT HIM. HE YELLED THREATS TO THE WITNESS AND THEN FLED THE SCENE ON FOOT. DEPUTIES EVENTUALLY FOUND BERNAL HIDING IN AN OUTBUILDING OF A NEARBY HOME AND HE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES INCLUDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, KIDNAPPING, AND FALSE IMPRISONMENT. HE IS BEING HELD ON $100,000 BAIL, PLUS AND IMMIGRATION HOLD.
