WOMAN DIES AFTER PICK UP GOES IN RIVER JKB 5/19/11

  • A HUMBOLDT COUNTY WOMAN DIED WHEN SHE WAS UNABLE TO ESCAPE FROM A PICK UP TRUCK THAT HAD PLUMMETED 400 FEET OVER AN EMBANKMENT OFF HIGHWAY 101 AND INTO THE EEL RIVER LATE TUESDAY.

20 YEAR OLD AMANDA KLEMM OF MCKINLEYVILLE WAS A PASSENGER IN THE TRUCK DRIVEN BY 19 YEAR OLD NOAH CARTER OF EUREKA. ACCORDING TO THE CHP, CARTER LOST CONTROL IN RAINY WEATHER AS HE ENTERED A CURVE NORTH OF LEGGET AND PLUNGED OVER THE SIDE OF THE CLIFF AT AROUND 10:30 PM. THE TRUCK SANK IN APPROXIMATELY 40 FEET OF WATER. CARTER WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE THE SINKING TRUCK BUT KLEMM COULD NOT. OFFICIALS SAY ALCOHOL OR DRUGS DO NOT APPEAR TO BE A FACTOR IN THE CRASH.

BURGLARY ARREST JKB 5/19/11

  • A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR STEALING JEWELRY AND AN IPOD FROM A NEIGHBORS HOUSE AFTER SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE FROM A NEARBY BUSINESS WAS USED TO PLACE HIM AT THE SCENE.

18 YEAR OLD BRUCE EVAN CARTWRIGHT JR. ADMITTED TO HIS INVOLVEMENT AFTER AUTHORITIES CONFRONTED HIM WITH THE VIDEOTAPE ON TUESDAY, THAT HAD A VIEW OF THE VICTIMS HOUSE FROM AN ADJACENT PARKING LOT. CARTWRIGHT HELPED AUTHORITIES RECOVER SOME OF THE STOLEN ITEMS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WITH BAIL SET AT $50,000.

MOLESTATION SENTENCE JKB 5/19/11

  • A FORMER WILLITS SCHOOL TEACHER WHO PLEADED GUILTY THE ONGOING MOLESTATION OF A GIRL THAT BEGAN WHEN THE VICTIM WAS JUST 12 YEARS OLD, WAS SENTENCED TO 6 YEARS 8 MONTHS IN PRISON YESTERDAY.

28 YEAR OLD MEGHAN ALLISON STEWART ADMITTED TO MOLESTING THE VICTIM, WHO IS NOW 19, BETWEEN 50 AND 100 TIMES FROM SEPTEMBER OF 2004 TO AUGUST OF 2007 WHILE SHE WAS WORKING AS A SOCCER COACH WITH A LOCAL LEAGUE IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY. STEWART WAS ARRESTED JANUARY 4TH AT BAECHTEL GROVE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN WILLITS WHERE SHE WAS HIRED TO TEACH PE IN AUGUST OF 2010.

COUNTERFEIT BILLS JKB 5/19/11

  • A RASH OF COUNTERFEIT $100 BILLS HAS TURNED UP IN LAKE COUNTY DURING THE PAST WEEK AND THE LAKEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT IS URGING BUSINESSES TO BE VIGILANT.

PHONY $100 BILLS WERE PASSED AT TWO SEPARATE BUSINESSES ON SOUTH MAIN STREET IN LAKEPORT ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY, AND UMPQUA BANK REPORTED THAT COUNTERFEIT $100 BILLS FROM DIFFERENT BUSINESSES THROUGH OUT KELSEYVILLE AND LAKEPORT HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED. AUTHORITIES ARE ENCOURAGING LOCAL BUSINESSES TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH IDENTIFYING COUNTERFEIT BILLS.

LIFE SENTENCE IN RAPE JKB 5/19/11

  • A 25 YEAR OLD SANTA ROSA MAN WILL NEVER BE RELEASED FROM PRISON AFTER A SONOMA COUNTY JUDGE GAVE HIM THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE POSSIBLE YESTERDAY IN THE RAPE OF AN 87 YEAR OLD WOMAN AT KNIFE POINT.

KEVIN MARQUICE COULTER ANTHONY WAS ALREADY SERVING A 25 YEARS TO LIFE SENTENCE FOR A PRIOR RAPE CONVICTION. JUDGE VIRGINIA MARCOIDA SENTENCED HIM TO ANOTHER 25 YEARS TO LIFE SENTENCE PLUS AN ADDITIONAL 84 YEARS FOR THE RAPE OF THE ELDERLY WOMAN THAT OCCURRED IN 2005.

ABANDONED BUILDING USED BY TRANSIENTS TORN DOWN JKB 5/19/11

  • AN ABANDONED BUILDING ON EAST GOBBI STREET THAT WAS BEING USED BY TRANSIENTS AS A MAKE SHIFT SHELTER, AND THAT HAD BECOME AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR FIREFIGHTERS, POLICE AND LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS, WAS TORN DOWN TUESDAY MORNING.

THE SHED, LOCATED AT 292 EAST GOBBI STREET BEHIND TAPESTRY FAMILY SERVICES WAS APPROVED FOR DEMOLITION IN JANUARY. A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE SHED A PUBLIC NUISANCE THAT WAS SCHEDULED TO GO BEFORE THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT TURNED OUT TO BE UNNECESSARY.

MARIJUANA BILL JKB 5/19/11

  • GROWING MARIJUANA IN CALIFORNIA COULD SOON BE A MISDEMEANOR IF THE LEGISLATURE PASSES A BILL SPONSORED BY STATE ASSEMBLYMAN TOM AMMIANO.

THE BILL, WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY MENDOCINO COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY C. DAVID EYSTER, WOULD CHANGE MARIJUANA CULTIVATION FROM A MANDATORY FELONY TO A SO-CALLED WOBBLER OFFENSE, GIVING DISTRICT ATTORNEYS THE OPTION OF CHARGING CULTIVATION OPERATIONS AS EITHER A MISDEMEANOR OR A FELONY. THE BILL PASSED OUT OF COMMITTEE YESTERDAY AND WILL NOW HEAD TO THE ASSEMBLY FLOOR FOR CONSIDERATION.

BOS APPROVES LIBRARY MEASURE FOR BALLOT JKB 5/19/11

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVED A MEASURE THAT WILL BE PLACED ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT THAT WILL ASK VOTERS TO SUPPORT A 1/8TH CENT SALES TAX INCREASE TO HELP FUND COUNTY LIBRARIES.

THE TAX, IF APPROVED WOULD APPLY IN THE UNINCORPORATED AREAS OF MENDOCINO COUNTY AND ITS 4 CITIES, AND WOULD END AFTER 16 YEARS. THE MEASURE WILL NEED A 2/3RDS MAJORITY TO PASS.
