SECOND POSSIBLE DEATH OFF MENDO COAST REPORTED JKB 5/31/11

  • TWO PEOPLE APPARENTLY DIED OFF THE MENDOCINO COAST OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND WHILE DIVING FOR ABALONE.

A 68 YEAR OLD LITTLE RIVER MAN DIVING WITH FRIENDS BECAME UNRESPONSIVE WHILE SWIMMING BACK TO SHORE AT AROUND 9:40 MONDAY MORNING. IT IS THOUGHT THE MAN MIGHT HAVE SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK OR OTHER MEDICAL EVENT IN THE WATER. HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.

MEANWHILE AUTHORITIES ARE CONTINUING TO SEARCH FOR A MISSING SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MAN WHO DISAPPEARED SATURDAY WHILE DIVING WITH A FRIEND 3 MILES SOUTH OF FORT BRAGG. THE OTHER DIVER WAS RESCUED. 37 YEAR OLD WILLIAM KIM OF LOS ANGELES REMAINS MISSING. THE DIVERS WERE UNABLE TO RETURN TO SHORE ON THEIR OWN WHEN THEY ENTERED THE OCEAN AT PINE BEACH AND GOT CAUGHT UP IN THE BREAKING SURF.

EMERGENCY LANDING FOR PLANE JKB 5/31/11

  • THE PILOT OF A SMALL PLANE WAS ABLE TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL EMERGENCY LANDING IN A HAY FIELD IN SOUTHEAST SANTA ROSA ON SUNDAY.

THE PLANE, DESIGNED FOR AEROBATICS, LANDED SAFELY AT ABOUT 9;30 AM IN THE FIELD NEAR TAYLOR MOUNTAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THE PILOT, CRAIG LITTLE OF SANTA ROSA SAID HE EXPERIENCED ENGINE TROUBLE SHORTLY AFTER TAKING OFF FROM THE SONOMA COUNTY AIRPORT.

D.A. INVESTIGATES SHERIFF INCIDENTS JKB 5/31/11

  • LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY DON ANDERSON ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY THAT HIS IN INVESTIGATING TWO RECENT INCIDENTS INVOLVING THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

THE FIRST IS A POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF MEMBERS OF THE HELLS ANGELS MOTORCYCLE GANG THAT WERE PREVENTED FROM ENTERING THE COUNTY MAY 14TH, WHEN A RIVAL MOTORCYCLE GANG, THE VAGOS, HELD A GATHERING IN LAKEPORT. THE SECOND INCIDENT BEING INVESTIGATED IS AN ARMED CONFRONTATION BETWEEN CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS AND UNDERCOVER LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES DURING A DRUG BUST THAT TOOK PLACE AFTER SHERIFF FRANK RIVERO FAILED TO NOTIFY CLEARLAKE POLICE CHIEF CRAIG CLAUSEN OF THE UNDERCOVER OPERATION.

ROLL OVER ACCIDENT JKB 5/31/11

  • TWO PEOPLE WERE LUCKY TO ESCAPE WITHOUT INJURIES WHEN THEIR CAR OVERTURNED DOWN A STEEP EMBANKMENT OFF HIGHWAY 175 AT THE HOPLAND GRADE YESTERDAY.

THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT AROUND 3:45 PM. A MALE DRIVER AND FEMALE PASSENGER WHERE SHAKEN UP, BUT OTHERWISE UNINJURED. THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS NOT RELEASED.

DRUG AND WEAPONS ARREST JKB 5/31/11

  • A MAN WALKING IN AN ALLEY WAY NEAR A CLOSED BUSINESS ON SOUTH STATE STREET AT 1:35 AM WEARING DARK CLOTHING AND GLOVES CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF A UKIAH POLICE OFFICER ON FRIDAY MORNING.

A QUICK CHECK REVEALED THAT 36 YEAR OLD JAMES RAY OF UKIAH WAS WANTED ON TWO ARREST WARRANTS FOR PROBATION VIOLATIONS. A SEARCH OF HIS PERSON FOUND HIM TO BE IN POSSESSION OF TWO SMALL BAGS OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND A LOADED 9 MM PISTOL THAT WAS CONCEALED IN THE FRONT WAISTBAND OF HIS PANTS. RAY WAS ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT ON DRUG AND WEAPONS CHARGES.

VANDALISM INVESTIGATION JKB 5/31/11

  • LAKE COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE TYING TO IDENTIFY THE PERSON OR PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR SPRAY PAINTING NAZI SWASTIKAS WITH THE LETTERS C O P S AT EACH CORNER ON A ROAD IN HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE AND ON A BARN ON HIGHWAY 29 IN LOWER LAKE.

THE INCIDENTS WERE DISCOVERED MAY 26TH. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

BROADBAND RESOLUTION ADOPTED JKB 5/31/11

  • BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS WILL HOPEFULLY BE WITHIN REACH OF MOST COUNTY RESIDENTS WITHIN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS UNANIMOUSLY PASSED A RESOLUTION LAST WEEK TO ACQUIRE UNIVERSAL AND AFFORDABLE BROADBAND SERVICES FOR AT LEAST 75% OF COUNTY RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS. THE RESOLUTION WAS BROUGHT FORWARD BY THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTY.

NEW MONUMENT FOR JONESTOWN VICTIMS DEDICATED JKB 5/31/11

  • A CONTROVERSIAL NEW MONUMENT FOR THE 917 PEOPLE WHO DIED IN THE 1978 MASS MURDER, SUICIDE AT JONESTOWN, GUYANA WAS DEDICATED AT EVERGREEN CEMETERY IN OAKLAND ON SUNDAY.

MEMBERS OF SOME OF THE VICTIMS FAMILIES SOUGHT TO BLOCK THE MONUMENT BECAUSE IT CONTAINS THE NAME OF PEOPLES TEMPLE LEADER JIM JONES ALONG WITH THE NAMES OF THOSE FOLLOWERS WHO DIED. A JUDGE LAST WEEK DENIED A MOTION TO BLOCK THE MONUMENT DEDICATION AT THE CEMETERY WHERE MORE THAN 400 OF THE UNIDENTIFIED AND UNCLAIMED JONESTOWN VICTIMS ARE BURIED IN A MASS GRAVE. MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE CEREMONY.

LAST GRADUATE WALKS AT URSULINE HIGH SCHOOL JKB 5/31/11

  • AFTER MORE THAN A CENTURY OF EDUCATING YOUNG WOMEN IN SANTA ROSA, URSULINE HIGH SCHOOL CELEBRATED ITS LAST GRADUATE ON SUNDAY.

SCHOOL OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED THE CLOSING OF THE ALL GIRLS SCHOOL LAST NOVEMBER DUE TO FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. 18 YEAR OLD HALEY ELIZABETH WILD-SICHI OF SANTA ROSA BECAME THE LAST YOUNG WOMAN THAT WILL EVER RECEIVE A DIPLOMA FROM URSULINE, CLOSING OUT THE SCHOOLS 130 YEAR HISTORY. NEIGHBORING CARDINAL NEWMAN WILL BECOME CO-ED NEXT YEAR.

MENDO COUNTY RECEIVES GRANT JKB 5/31/11

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY HAS RECEIVED JUST SHORT OF $281,000 FROM THE HOPLAND BAND OF POMO INDIANS THAT WILL HELP PAY FOR SHERIFFS PATROL DEPUTIES THAT SERVICE THE HOPLAND SHO-KA-WAH CASINO, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG PROGRAMS.

THE CASH AWARD COMES FROM THE INDIAN GAMING SPECIAL DISTRIBUTION FUND AS NEGOTIATED UNDER THE TERMS OF THE TRIBAL STATE GAMING COMPACTS.
