MURDER RE-ARREST JKB 6/29/11

  • A MAN WHO HAD BEEN ARRESTED AND THEN RELEASED IN CONNECTION WITH A SHOOTING IN CLEARLAKE THAT INJURED 5 PEOPLE AND LEFT A 4 YEAR OLD BOY DEAD, WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AGAIN ON TUESDAY.

PROSECUTORS SAY THEY HAD DEVELOPED SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO CHARGE 23 YEAR OLD ORLANDO LOPEZ WITH MURDER. ANOTHER MAN CHARGED IN THE CASE, 21 YEAR OLD PAUL BRADEN, PLEADED NOT GUILTY IN COURT YESTERDAY. POLICE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR A THIRD SUSPECT IN THE CASE, 29 YEAR OLD KEVIN STONE. ALL THREE MEN ARE BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHOOTING THAT KILLED 4 YEAR OLD SKYLAR RAPP ON JUNE 18TH.

FATAL ID RELEASED JKB 6/29/11

  • A SANTA ROSA MAN WHO DIED MONDAY EVENING AFTER FALLING INTO LAKE SONOMA FOLLOWING WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY WAS IDENTIFIED AS 39 YEAR OLD ERIC BROWN.

BROWN HAD COMPLAINED TO HIS MOTHER THE HE WASNT FELLING WELL EARLIER IN THE DAY BEFORE FALLING OVERBOARD FROM A DOCKED CABIN CRUISER NEAR THE ISLAND VIEW GROUP CAMP AT AROUND 7:30 PM. HIS CAUSE OF DEATH HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.

APPARENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT JKB 6/29/11

  • A WASHINGTON STATE WOMAN VISITING FORT BRAGG WITH HER HUSBAND, JUMPED OFF THE 2ND STORY BALCONY OF HER ROOM AT THE NORTH CLIFF MOTEL, IN AN APPARENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT LAST TUESDAY.

RESPONDING POLICE FOUND THE UNCONSCIOUS WOMAN LYING FACE DOWN IN THE BUSHES NEAR THE BASE OF THE MOTEL AT AROUND 11:30 PM. AFTER REGAINING CONSCIOUSNESS, SHE COULD NOT REMEMBER WHERE SHE WAS OR ANY EVENTS LEADING UP TO HER FALL. THE WOMAN REPORTEDLY HAS A HISTORY OF SUICIDAL TENDENCIES AND HAD BEEN DRINKING ALCOHOL WITH HER HUSBAND JUST PRIOR TO THE FALL.

SERIAL KILLER VICTIM FOUND JKB 6/29/11

  • POLICE HAVE FOUND THE REMAINS OF A WALNUT CREEK WOMAN WHO WAS KIDNAPPED, RAPED AND MURDERED BY THE SERIAL KILLER KNOWN AS THE I-5 STRANGLER 34 YEARS AFTER SHE WAS KILLED.

THE BODY OF 21 YEAR OLD ELLEN BURLEIGH WAS RECOVERED FROM A DRY RIVERBED NEAR LAKE BERRYESSA. ROGER REECE KIBBE WAS CONVICTED OF THE MURDER OF BURLEIGH AND 5 OTHER WOMEN IN 2009. AS PART OF A PLEA AGREEMENT, HE AGREED TO HELP LOCATE HER BODY. KIBBE WAS IN PRISON FOR STRANGLING A TEEN PROSTITUTE WHEN HE WAS CHARGED IN 2009 WITH MURDERING 6 WOMEN AND DROPPING THEIR BODIES ALONG FREEWAYS BETWEEN 1977 AND 1987.

E-QUAKES -= JKB 6/29/11

  • AN AREA 2 MILES SOUTH SOUTH WEST OF ANDERSON SPRINGS AND 5 MILES WEST OF MIDDLETOWN HAS BEEN RATTLED BY A SERIES OF SMALL EARTHQUAKES THIS MORNING.

THE FIRST QUAKE MEASURED 3.5 IN MAGNITUDE AND STRUCK AT 4:13 AM. IT OCCURRED IN THE SAME PLACE AS A 2.9 MAGNITUDE QUAKE YESTERDAY. IT HAS BEEN FOLLOWED BY 3 AFTERSHOCKS MEASURING 1.0, 1.8 AND 2.3 IN MAGNITUDE.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT JKB 6/29/11

  • A UKIAH WOMAN RIDING A MOTORCYCLE WAS SEVERELY INJURED WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY A CAR AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEST GOBBIE AND SOUTH OAK STREETS ON MONDAY.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT, 54 YEAR OLD GAIL CARGILE WAS RIDING WESTBOUND ON GOBBIE STREET WHEN 65 YEAR OLD ALICE HAWLEY OF COVELO TURNED LEFT ONTO OAK STREET, STRIKING THE LEFT SIDE OF CARGILES BIKE. CARGILE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER, BEFORE BEING AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE AREA FOR FURTHER TREATMENT.

KIDNAPPERS CAUGHT JKB 6/29/11

  • A HUMBOLDT COUNTY COUPLE WANTED FOR THE KIDNAPPING, BEATING, AND ROBBERY OF A EUREKA MAN WERE ARRESTED AFTER A CITIZEN PHONED IN A TIP TO POLICE ON MONDAY.

37 YEAR OLD CHANDLER NELSON, AND 32 YEAR OLD GINGER HOWARD WERE ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN EUREKA.

STATE BUDGET DEAL JKB 6/29/11

  • WITH JUST DAYS BEFORE THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR, STATE LAWMAKERS HAVE PASSED A BUDGET PACKAGE THAT SUPPOSEDLY ALREADY HAS GOVERNOR BROWNS APPROVAL.

THE PACKAGE CLOSES THE STATES CURRENT $9.6 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET DEFICIT, BUT ASSUMES THE STATE WILL SEE A $4 BILLION INCREASE IN REVENUE OVER THE NEXT YEAR. IF THAT FAILS TO HAPPEN, A SERIES OF TRIGGER CUTS WOULD BE IMPLEMENTED LATER IN THE YEAR. ALSO, REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES DID NOT SURVIVE THE BUDGET AXE, AND ARE SCHEDULED FOR ELIMINATION. REDEVELOPMENT BACKERS HAVE THREATENED TO SUE IF THAT PORTION OF THE BUDGET IS SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR.

CITY OF UKIAH ADOPTS BUDGET WITH 4 DAY WORK WEEK JKB 6/29/11

  • THE CITY OF UKIAH APPROVED A $58 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR THAT INCLUDES MOVING TO A 4 DAY WORK WEEK, WITH CITY OFFICES CLOSING ON FRIDAYS.

THE 36 HOUR WORK WEEK IS EXPECTED TO SAVE THE CITY $1 MILLION DOLLARS, AND REPRESENTS A 10% PAY CUT FOR CITY EMPLOYEES. THE BUDGET PASSED ON A VOTE OF 3 TO 1 WITH COUNCIL MEMBER CRANE DISSENTING. COUNCIL MEMBER BALDWIN WAS ABSENT.

TRANSPORTATION FUNDS APPROVED JKB 6/29/11

  • THE STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION HAS APPROVED THE SPENDING OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR SEVERAL ROAD PROJECTS ON THE NORTH COAST, INCLUDING SOME IN LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES.

MENDOCINO COUNTY WILL RECEIVE $9 MILLION TO REPLACE THE GREENWOOD CREEK BRIDGE ON HIGHWAY 1 NEAR ELK, AND $3 MILLION DOLLARS TO DECOMMISSION AN OLD STRETCH OF HIGHWAY 101 NEAR CONFUSION HILL THAT WAS BYPASSED WITH THE NEW BRIDGE, BEFORE IT FALLS INTO THE EEL RIVER. IN LAKE COUNTY, $6.1 MILLION DOLLARS WAS APPROVED FOR THE REPAVING OF SEVERAL STRETCHES ON HIGHWAYS 29 AND 53.
