  • THE BODY OF A MISSING ABALONE DIVER WAS FOUND BY HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS OFF THE MENDOCINO COAST ON SATURDAY MORNING.

37 YEAR OLD WILLIAM KIM OF LOS ANGELES AND ANOTHER DIVER GOT CAUGHT UP IN THE BREAKING SURF ON MAY 29TH. THE OTHER DIVER WAS RESCUED AFTER BEING PULLED MORE THAN A QUARTER MILE OUT TO SEA. A 2 DAY SEARCH FAILED TO LOCATE KIM. ABOUT 30 OF KIMS FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS, MANY OF WHOM HAD BEEN FORMER REPUBLIC OF KOREA MARINES, AND EXPERIENCED DIVERS, LOCATED HIS BODY NEAR MITCHELL CREEK LESS THAN 100 YARDS FROM WHERE HE DISAPPEARED.

2nd FIREFIGHTER DIES FROM INJURIES JKB 6/6/11

  • A 2ND FIREFIGHTER WHO WAS SEVERELY INJURED DURING A FLASH OVER EXPLOSION WHILE BATTLING A BLAZE IN SAN FRANCISCO LAST WEEK HAS DIED.

53 YEAR OLD ANTHONY VALERIO DIED OF SEVERE BURN AND SMOKE INHALATION INJURIES SUFFERED IN THE BLAST. 48 YEAR OLD YEAR OLD FIREFIGHTING VETERAN LT VINCENT PEREZ, AND A THIRD FIREFIGHTER WERE ALSO INJURED DURING THE FLASHOVER. PEREZ WENT INTO FULL CARDIAC ARREST AND DIED SHORTLY AFTER BEING TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL. THE THIRD FIREFIGHTER WAS TREATED AND RELEASED.

  • A KAYAKER WHO WAS SWEPT MORE THAN 2 MILES OFF THE SONOMA COUNTY COAST WAS RESCUED WITH THE HELP OF A SHERIFFS HELICOPTER ON SATURDAY.

AUTHORITIES RECEIVED A CALL SHORTLY BEFORE 9 AM THAT THE ABALONE HUNTING KAYAKER WAS IN DISTRESS OFF SMUGGLERS COVE NEAR SEA RANCH. A LONG LINE FROM THE SONOMA COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT HELICOPTER HENRY 1 WAS USED TO PICK UP THE KAYAKER AND HE WAS RETURNED TO SHORE UNHARMED.

  • ONE OF CLEARLAKES MOST WANTED WAS ARRESTED AFTER BEING FOUND HIDING UNDER A HOUSE ON FRIDAY.

28 YEAR OLD JOSHUA GORDON SMITH WAS WANTED ON SEVERAL FELONY WARRANTS INCLUDING A HOME INVASION ATTACK, MAKING TERRORIST THREATS, AND LEADING POLICE ON A HIGH SPEED CHASE IN WHICH HE ESCAPED AND A PURSUING OFFICER WAS INJURED WHEN HE CRASHED INTO A TREE. A SERIES OF ANONYMOUS TIPS LED TO SMITHS CAPTURE ON FRIDAY.

MAN BEATEN IN BIKER BRAWL JKB 6/6/11

  • AN ALLEGED CONFRONTATION BETWEEN RIVAL MEMBERS OF THE HELLS ANGELS AND VAGOS MOTORCYCLE GANGS AT THE KONOCTI VISTA CASINO IN LAKE COUNTY OVER THE WEEKEND LEFT ONE MAN SEVERELY BEATEN, BUT UNWILLING TO COOPERATE WITH AUTHORITIES.

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN SAYS HE IS PREPARED TO SUE THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OVER PROPOSED DEPUTY LAYOFFS IN THE INTEREST OF PUBLIC SAFETY.

ALLMAN, WHO HAS REPORTEDLY ALREADY RETAINED AN ATTORNEY, WILL SPEAK TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AT THEIR MEETING TOMORROW.   • PAROLE WAS DENIED FOR A FORMER LAKE COUNTY MAN CONVICTED IN THE 1998 MURDER OF HIS GIRLFRIEND.

64 YEAR OLD TIMOTHY CONNORS KILLED NINA ROLIH IN APRIL OF 1997 BY SLASHING HER THROAT WITH A BUTCHER KNIFE. HE THEN LOADED HER BODY INTO A GARBAGE CAN, WHEELED IT DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AND HID IT UNDER A BLANKET AND SOME DEBRIS. TWO DAYS LATER HE CLAIMED SHE WAS HIT AND KILLED BY A TRUCK. HE LATER SAID HE KILLED HER IN SELF DEFENSE WHEN SHE ATTACKED HIM IN A DRUNKEN RAGE. CONNORS HAD PREVIOUSLY THREATENED TO KILL ROLIH AND STABBED HER SEVERAL TIMES DURING A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCIDENT WHILE INTOXICATED IN 1996.

MAN DIES AFTER TRYING TO HANG SELF FROM BRIDGE JKB 6/3/11

  • A MAN DIED AFTER APPARENTLY TRYING TO HANG HIMSELF FROM THE OLD GUERNEVILLE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, THE ROPE BROKE, AND THE MAN, WHOS NAME WAS NOT RELEASED, FELL ABOUT 40 FEET INTO THE SHALLOW RIVER. NO WITNESS HAVE COME FORWARD TO REPORT THAT THEY SAW THE MAN JUMP, BUT A WOMAN REPORTED HEARING THE SOUND OF A LOUD SPLASH JUST AFTER 10 AM.

S.F. FIREFIGHTER DIES BATTLING FIRE JKB 6/3/11

  • A LONG TIME FIREFIGHTER DIED WHILE BATTLING A HOUSE FIRE IN THE DIAMOND HEIGHTS AREA OF SAN FRANCISCO YESTERDAY.

21 YEAR VETERAN FIREFIGHTER LT. VINCENT PEREZ WENT INTO FULL CARDIAC ARREST AFTER SUFFERING SEVERE BURNS AND SMOKE INHALATION DURING THE MORNING BLAZE. ANOTHER FIREFIGHTER WAS HOSPITALIZED IN CRITICAL CONDITION, AND A THIRD WAS TREATED AND RELEASED. A SPOKESPERSON SAID THE THREE WERE INJURED DURING A FLASHOVER WHILE INSIDE THE BURNING BUILDING.

IMPROPER DISPOSAL OF ASHES CAUSE OF FIRE JKB 6/3/11

  • FIRE INVESTIGATORS SAY IT WAS THE IMPROPER DISPOSAL OF FIRE PIT ASHES THAT DESTROYED THE HISTORIC LODGE A THE FOUR SPRINGS RETREAT OUTSIDE MIDDLETOWN MONDAY NIGHT.

THE 3000 SQUARE FOOT LODGE BURNED TO THE GROUND AND WAS A TOTAL LOSS. AN INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THE FIRE PITS ASHES HAD BEEN PLACED INTO A PLASTIC BAG, PUT INSIDE A CARDBOARD BOX AND THEN LEFT NEXT TO THE BUILDING AT AROUND NOON MONDAY. THE FIRE WAS REPORTED BY A PASSING MOTORIST AT AROUND 8:30 LATER THAT DAY.

3 SUV CRASH JKB 6/3/11

  • HIGHWAY 1 WAS CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS LAST FRIDAY WHEN A CRASH INVOLVING 3 SUVS OCCURRED AT AROUND 7 PM.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 42 YEAR OLD RANDALL JENNINGS OF FORT BRAGG LOST CONTROL OF HIS LEXUS SUV, STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT, AND COLLIDED WITH AN AUDI SUV DRIVEN BY 42 YEAR OLD KEITH KAARUP JR OF SANTA ROSA. JENNINGS VEHICLE CONTINUED ON AND STRUCK A FOLLOWING MAZDA SUV BEING DRIVEN BY 44 YEAR OLD DANIEL LINTZ OF NAPA. JENNINGS SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES, KAARUP AND A PASSENGER IN HIS SUV, MODERATE INJURIES. LINTZ WAS NOT INJURED.

  • ANOTHER RARE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA YESTERDAY, BUT DIDNT CAUSE ANY DAMAGE.

THE TWISTER WAS SPOTTED IN A RURAL AREA ABOUT 5 MILES NORTH OF YUBA CITY AT AROUND 5:30 PM. IT TOUCHED DOWN NOT FAR FROM WHERE THREE TORNADOES STRUCK LAST WEEK OUTSIDE OF CHICO, DESTROYING HUNDREDS OF ACRES OF ALMOND ORCHARDS.

TEEN KNOCKS SELF UNCONSCIOUS WHILE RUNNING FROM POLICE JKB 6/3/11

  • A 17 YEAR OLD BOY WHO HAD JUST BEEN RELEASED FROM JUVENILE HALL HELPED CAPTURE HIMSELF WHEN HE KNOCKED HIMSELF UNCONSCIOUS WHILE TRYING TO RUN FROM A UKIAH POLICE OFFICER LAST WEEK.

THE BOY TRIED TO CLIMB A FENCE TO ESCAPE, WHEN HE WAS SPOTTED BY POLICE POURING ALCOHOL FROM ONE CONTAINER TO ANOTHER AT AROUND 11:40 PM FRIDAY. HE FELL HEAD FIRST ONTO THE GROUND AND KNOCKED HIMSELF OUT. HE WAS GIVEN A FREE TRIP BACK TO JUVENILE HALL AFTER BEING TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER AS A PRECAUTION.

METH ARREST JKB 6/3/11

  • A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP BY LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WORKING THE SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT DETAIL LED TO THE ARREST OF A MIDDLETOWN MAN ON DRUG CHARGES TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

49 YEAR OLD WILLIAM GRAVES WAS PULLED OVER AFTER BRIEFLY TRYING TO AVOID SHERIFFS DEPUTIES. HE SHOWED SIGNS OF BEING HIGH ON METH AND A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE TURNED UP A QUARTER OUNCE OF THE DRUG. ANOTHER HALF OUNCE WAS FOUND HIDDEN IN HIS PANTS WHEN HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL.

SEARCH RESUMES FOR MISSING DIVER JKB 6/2/11

  • THE SEARCH FOR A MISSING ABALONE DIVER OFF THE MENDOCINO COUNTY COAST WILL RESUME TODAY.

THE SEARCH FOR 37 YEAR OLD WILLIAM KIM OF LOS ANGELES WAS SUSPENDED WHEN OCEAN CONDITIONS BECAME TOO ROUGH TO SAFELY CONTINUE EARLIER IN THE WEEK. KIM DISAPPEARED IN THE SURF NEAR PINE BEACH ON SATURDAY. A 2ND DIVER THAT WAS WITH KIM WAS RESCUED BY THE COAST GUARD AFTER BEING PULLED NEARLY A QUARTER MILE OFF SHORE IN A RIP CURRENT.

TEEN ARRESTED AFTER PIT BULL ATTACK JKB 6/2/11

  • A 15 YEAR OLD UKIAH BOY WAS ARRESTED AFTER ORDERING HIS DOG TO ATTACK A MENDOCINO COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER.

THE OFFICER WENT TO THE BOYS HOME ON A REPORT THAT THE DOG, A PIT BULL TERRIER, HAD ATTACKED A CAT. THE TEEN WAS UNCOOPERATIVE AND RETREATED INSIDE THE ADAMS STREET HOME WITH THE DOG. A SHORT TIME LATER THE DOOR OPENED AND THE BOY RELEASED THE DOG, TELLING IT TO GET THE OFFICER. THE OFFICER WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE UNINJURED. THE BOY WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO JUVENILE HALL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, WHILE THE DOG WAS TAKEN TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER.

  • A TRINITY COUNTY JUDGE HAS ORDERED A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF A HUMBOLDT COUNTY WOMAN WHO ADMITTED TO DROWNING HER 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IN THE TRINITY RIVER MAY 20TH.

THE JUDGE IN ORDERING THE EVALUATION, QUESTIONED 30 YEAR OLD CLAUDIA PEDREROS ABILITY TO STAND TRIAL. PEDREROS, WHO HAS A HISTORY OF MENTAL ILLNESS, WAS FOUND WALKING NAKED ON A RURAL TRINITY COUNTY ROAD AND INITIALLY STATED SHE DIDNT REMEMBER HAVING A DAUGHTER. SHE LATER CONFESSED TO DROWNING THE TODDLER IN THE RIVER. THE BODY OF SOPHIA PARKER PEDREROS WAS RECOVERED A HALF MILE FROM THE TRINITY RIVER CAMPGROUND WHERE THE TWO HAD BEEN STAYING.

FIRE DESTROYS LODGE JKB 6/2/11

  • A FIRE DESTROYED A LODGE AT THE FOUR SPRINGS RETREAT OUTSIDE MIDDLETOWN MONDAY EVENING.

A MOTORIST ON HIGHWAY 175 SPOTTED THE BLAZE SHORTLY BEFORE 8:30 PM. THE 3000 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING WAS COMPLETELY INVOLVED IN FLAMES BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AND WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS. SEVERAL OTHER NEARBY BUILDINGS SUFFERED MINOR DAMAGE DUE TO THE EXTREME HEAT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AS NO ONE WAS AT THE LODGE AT THE TIME THE FIRE BROKE OUT. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, HOWEVER FIRE OFFICIALS SAY IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ARSON.

SHOOTING INCIDENTS IN CLEARLAKE JKB 6/2/1

  • THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING TWO SEPARATE AND UNRELATED SHOOTING INCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

THE FIRST WAS A REPORTED DRIVE BY SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED AT AROUND 8:30 PM ON DAM ROAD NEAR LAKE STREET. POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A SMALL 1990S MAROON 2 DOOR COUPE THAT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE FIRED ON ANOTHER CAR. AN ADULT FEMALE DRIVER AND A 17 YEAR OLD MALE PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED WHEN AT LEAST TWO SHOTS STRUCK THEIR VEHICLE. AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THE SHOOTING MAY BE GANG RELATED.

IN THE 2ND INCIDENT A WOMAN REPORTED THAT SHE WAS DRIVING IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE BURNS VALLEY MALL WHEN A MAN OF APPROXIMATELY 18 CONFRONTED HER FOR LOOKING AT HIM. HE ALLEGEDLY PULLED A GUN AND FIRED 2 SHOTS UP INTO THE AIR AND FLED. POLICE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR HIM. THE WOMAN AND A FEMALE PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED.

BURGLARY ARREST JKB 6/2/11

  • AN 18 YEAR OLD TRANSIENT WOMAN FROM THE ALBION AREA WAS ARRESTED AFTER STEALING A LAPTOP COMPUTER AND BLANKET FROM A MENDOCINO MAN ON SUNDAY.

THE VICTIM SAID HE HEARD A VEHICLE PULL UP IN HIS DRIVEWAY AT AROUND 6:30 PM, AND WENT TO INVESTIGATE AFTER NO ONE CAME TO THE DOOR. HE FOUND AN INTOXICATED 18 YEAR OLD BRITTANY MASON INSIDE HIS HOME AND TOLD HER TO LEAVE, NOTING HER LICENSE PLATE NUMBER AS SHE DROVE AWAY. HE LATER DISCOVERED HIS LAPTOP WAS MISSING. POLICE STOPPED MASON AND HER VEHICLE JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT AND FOUND HER IN POSSESSION OF THE STOLEN ITEMS.

CHARGES FILED AGAINST LAKEPORT CITY ATTORNEY JKB 6/2/11

  • THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE HAS FILED CHARGES AGAINST LAKEPORT CITY ATTORNEY STEVEN J. BROOKES FOR A MISDEMEANOR DUI AND HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT THAT OCCURRED IN FEBRUARY.

BROOKES ALLEGEDLY WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE WHEN HIS CAR STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE IN KELSEYVILLE AND HE FLED THE SCENE. CHARGES WERE FORMALLY FILED MAY 20TH. HIS ARRAIGNMENT IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 28TH.

RAINS THREATEN GRAPES JKB 6/2/11

  • THE RECENT RAINS AND CONTINUED WEATHER FORECAST ARE THREATENING TO DEVASTATE THIS YEARS GRAPE CROP.

THE IMPACT THAT PREDICTED RAINS WILL HAVE ON THIS YEARS CROP AS IT TRIES TO POLLINATE WILL NOT BE KNOWN FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, BUT COULD LEAD TO A CRITICALLY LOW NUMBER OF FRUIT SETS. RAINFALL FOR JUNE, WHICH FORECASTER SAY COULD SET A NEW RECORD, IS EXPECTED TO LOWER THE AMOUNT OF GRAPES HARVESTED IN THE FALL, POTENTIALLY COSTING GROWERS 10 OF MILLION OF DOLLARS IN LOST REVENUE.

SEARCH AND RESCUE SUCCESS JKB 6/1/11

  • A SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORT LED TO THE RECOVERY OF AN INJURED MOTORCYCLE RIDER IN THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST OVER THE WEEKEND.

58 YEAR OLD RONALD GUSTAFSON OF TRACY WAS REPORTED MISSING SUNDAY NIGHT BY HIS WIFE AFTER NOT RETURNING TO THEIR VACATION HOME AFTER HE WENT RIDING IN THE BOARD CAMP AREA. A SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORT WAS BEGUN THE NEXT MORNING. SEARCH CREWS DISCOVERED GUSTAFSON AS HE WAS BEING TRANSPORTED OUT OF THE AREA IN A PICK UP TRUCK THAT HAD BEEN FLAGGED DOWN BY TWO RIDERS WHO FOUND GUSTAFSON AT AROUND 11 AM MONDAY MORNING. HE HAD WRECKED HIS MOTORCYCLE AND WAS INJURED AT AROUND 5 PM ON SUNDAY AND HAD STAYED THE NIGHT WHERE HE HAD FALLEN. HE WAS EVENTUALLY AIRLIFTED TO U.C. DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER WITH A POSSIBLE FRACTURED LEG.

2nd COAST FATALITY IDENTIFIED JKB 6/1/11

  • A 2ND MAN WHO DIED ON THE MENDOCINO COAST OVER THE WEEKEND WAS IDENTIFIED AS 68 YEAR OLD LOUIS GIMENEZ.

GIMENEZ WAS PREPARING TO DIVE NORTH OF VAN DAMME STATE BEACH WHEN HE COLLAPSED AND WAS WASHED INTO THE OCEAN. HE WAS PULLED TO SHORE BY FRIENDS, WHO BEGAN CPR, BUT DIED AT THE SCENE. GIMENEZ HADNT GONE INTO THE WATER YET, SO HIS DEATH WASNT CONSIDERED AS ABALONE DIVING RELATED.
