WINTER STORM TO HIT JKB 11/17/11

  • THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON WILL DESCEND ON NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TONIGHT AND TOMORROW.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3000 FEET THAT WILL GO INTO EFFECT AT 10 AM THIS MORNING AND CONTINUE UNTIL AT LEAST 4 PM FRIDAY. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN BOTH LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES COULD REACH 3 TO 5 INCHES FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3000 FEET BY TONIGHT AND 1 TO 3 INCHES FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 2500 FEET. GUSTY WINDS COULD ALSO LEAD TO WHITE OUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. TRAVELERS ARE ADVISED TO CARRY EXTRA FOOD, WATER, WARM CLOTHING, AND TIRE CHAINS IF HEADED INTO THE MOUNTAINS AND TO BE PREPARED FOR EXTREME WINTER WEATHER DRIVING CONDITIONS.

5 DAYS JAIL IN CROSSWALK DEATH JKB 11/17/11

  • A SONOMA COUNTY WOMAN WHO KILLED A 2 YEAR OLD GIRL AND SEVERELY INJURED HER MOTHER WHEN SHE STRUCK THEM IN A CROSSWALK WHILE SHE WAS TEXTING AND DRIVING WAS SENTENCED TO JUST FIVE DAYS IN JAIL YESTERDAY.

19 YEAR OLD KAITLYN DUNAWAY WAS ALSO ORDERED TO SERVE 115 DAYS OF ELECTRONIC HOME CONFINEMENT, PERFORM 200 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE THAT INCLUDES SPEAKING TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF TEXTING AND DRIVING, AND SURRENDER HER DRIVERS LICENSE FOR ONE YEAR.

MAN TO BE TRIED IN CROSSWALK DEATH JKB 11/17/11

  • A SANTA ROSA MAN WHO STRUCK AND KILLED A 4 YEAR OLD BOY WHO WAS WALKING IN A CROSSWALK WITH HIS FAMILY AUGUST 18TH, HAS BEEN ORDERED TO STAND TRIAL FOR VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER AND HIT AND RUN.

ACCORDING TO PROSECUTORS, 22 YEAR OLD MARCO LOPEZ GARCIA WAS DRIVING RECKLESSLY WHEN HE HIT AND KILLED 4 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER BUDDY ROWE. HE FLED THE SCENE, CHANGED CARS, AND ALLEGEDLY ASKED HIS BOSS FOR MONEY AND A RIDE TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SO HE COULD ESCAPE INTO MEXICO. HE WAS APPREHENDED WHEN A PRIVATE CITIZEN FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT ON A POLICE SCANNER WAS ABLE TO GIVE A DESCRIPTION OF THE CAR HE WAS DRIVING AFTER THE ACCIDENT.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED JKB 11/17/11

  • A MOTORCYCLIST WAS INJURED IN A CRASH ON HIGHWAY 20 JUST EAST OF HILLSIDE LANE LATE YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 56 YEAR OLD JERRY COFFMAN OF CLEARLAKE OAKS WAS RIDING WESTBOUND WHEN HE BECAME DISTRACTED AND ALLOWED HIS BIKE TO DRIFT OFF THE RIGHT SHOULDER WHERE HE STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT AND WAS EJECTED FROM THE MOTORCYCLE JUST BEFORE NOON. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO ST. HELENA HOSPITAL IN CLEARLAKE FOR TREATMENT OF MINOR TO MODERATE INJURIES.

FUGITIVE APPREHENDED JKB 11/17/11

  • UKIAH POLICE CAUGHT UP WITH A MAN WHO GAVE THEM THE SLIP AFTER A TRAFFIC STOP LAST WEEK.

34 YEAR OLD MARIO PAULIDO FLED FROM OFFICERS DURING THE STOP BECAUSE OF AN ACTIVE WARRANT FOR HIS ARREST. WHEN POLICE WENT TO HIS APARTMENT EARLIER THIS WEEK, THEY DISCOVERED HIM TRYING TO FLEE THROUGH THE ATTIC CRAWL SPACE. PAULIDO FELL THROUGH THE CEILING AND INTO A UTILITY ROOM OF THE APARTMENT COMPLEX AND WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE AGAIN. PAUDILO TRIED A NUMBER OF TIMES TO ELUDE POLICE DURING THE FOOT PURSUIT. HE EVENTUALLY RAN TO A NEARBY APARTMENT COMPLEX WHERE HE SURRENDERED. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED DURING THE CASE AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL.

NASH TO RETIRE AS UUSD SUPERINTENDENT JKB 11/17/11

  • UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT LOIS NASH HAS ANNOUNCED THAT SHE INTENDS TO RETIRE AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

NASH MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TUESDAY NIGHT. NASH WAS APPOINTED AS THE SUPERINTENDENT IN 2009 AND HAS MORE THAN 40 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES UNANIMOUSLY GAVE HER A POSITIVE EVALUATION AT HER LAST REVIEW IN MAY, DESPITE A UKIAH TEACHERS ASSOCIATION SURVEY THAT INDICATED THE MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERSHIP HAD LITTLE OR NO CONFIDENCE IN NASH AS SUPERINTENDENT. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILL APPOINT A NEW SUPERINTENDENT BEFORE THE START OF THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR.

OCCUPY SANTA ROSA CAMP TO BE VACATED JKB 11/17/11

  • THINGS COULD HEAT UP TODAY AT THE OCCUPY SANTA ROSA CAMP AS CITY OFFICIALS SUSPENDED A PROGRAM TO ISSUE CAMPING PERMITS YESTERDAY AFTER THE MAJORITY OF PROTESTORS VOTED TO REJECT THE PERMIT PROCESS.

THE CITY WILL BE ISSUING NOTICES TO VACATE TODAY ON UN-PERMITTED TENTS AT THE CITY HALL ENCAMPMENT. PEOPLE WITH VALID CAMPING PERMITS WILL BE ALLOWED TO STAY. MEANWHILE AT THE OCCUPY SEBASTOPOL PROTEST, CITY OFFICIALS REFUSED TO CONSIDER AN APPLICATION FOR A SPECIAL EVENTS PERMIT YESTERDAY BECAUSE IT CAME BACK UNSIGNED. CITY OFFICIALS SAID THEY CONTACTED THE ATTORNEY WHO SUBMITTED THE APPLICATION BY EMAIL TUESDAY NIGHT TO NOTIFY HIM OF THE MISSING SIGNATURE AND WAITED UNTIL AFTER 5 PM WEDNESDAY WITH NO RESPONSE, BEFORE DEEMING IT INVALID APPLICATION. THE CITY HAS NOT YET BEGUN TO ENFORCE A NO CAMPING ORDINANCE.

LAKEPORT CITY COUNCIL TO GET IPADS JKB 11/17/11

  • THE LAKEPORT CITY COUNCIL HAVE ELECTED TO GO PAPERLESS AND WILL SOON BE GETTING NEW IPADS TO CONDUCT CITY BUSINESS ON.

COUNCIL MEMBERS WILL BE GIVEN THE OPTION TO USE AN IPAD PURCHASED BY THE CITY THAT WOULD REMAIN CITY PROPERTY AND COULD ONLY BE USED FOR OFFICIAL CITY BUSINESS, OR BUY THE IPAD THEMSELVES THROUGH THE CITY WITH 0% FINANCING FOR A COST OF UP TO $750, WITH THE PROVISION THE DEVICE BE PAID OFF WITHIN 12 MONTHS. ACCORDING TO A COST ANALYSIS OVER THE LAST YEAR, CITY STAFF PRINTED CLOSE TO 14,000 PAGES FOR CITY COUNCIL BUSINESS AT A COST OF AROUND $2,400 ANNUALLY. THE COST FOR THE FULLY OUTFITTED IPADS FOR THE FIVE COUNCIL MEMBERS IS JUST OVER $2,700.
