WINTER WEATHER JKB 11/18/11

  • THE FIRST WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON IS HERE AND RESIDENTS IN LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES COULD SEE AS MUCH AS 3 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3000 FEET TODAY.

SOME ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW DOWN TO THE 2500 LEVEL IS POSSIBLE. THE SNOW SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF BY THE LATE AFTERNOON. MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO BE PREPARED FOR RAPIDLY CHANGING ROAD CONDITIONS AND EXTREME WINTER WEATHER DRIVING IF HEADED INTO THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

MARIJUANA RELATED SHOOTING JKB 11/18/11

  • ONE MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING IN COVELO WHILE APPARENTLY ATTEMPTING TO STEAL MARIJUANA.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON MENDOCINO PASS ROAD AT 5:40 AM BY 22 YEAR OLD JOEY LONG. HE STATED THAT HE HAD BEEN ASLEEP WITH HIS WIFE AND YOUNG CHILD WHEN HE HEARD HIS SLIDING GLASS DOOR SHATTER. LONG ARMED HIMSELF WITH A .357 CALIBER HANDGUN AND CONFRONTED TWO INTRUDERS. ACCORDING TO LONG, ONE OF THE MEN WAS HOLDING AN OBJECT THAT APPEARED TO BE A WEAPON AND HE EMPTIED THE .357 IN THE DIRECTION OF THE TWO MEN. HE THEN RETRIEVED A 2ND HAND GUN FROM A CLOSET AND FIRED TWO MORE SHOTS. ONE OF THE INTRUDERS DIED AT THE SCENE AFTER SUFFERING A SINGLE GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE CHEST. THE OTHER FLED IN A WHITE CHEVY COBLAT TYPE SEDAN. ACCORDING TO DEPUTIES APPROXIMATELY 100 POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA WAS FOUND INSIDE AND AROUND THE HOME. THE NAME OF THE SHOOTING VICTIM HAS NOT YET BEEN CONFIRMED. THE SEARCH FOR THE 2ND SUSPECT IS CONTINUING. THE CASE IS BEING FORWARDED TO THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE.

ALCOHOL NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR TEENS DEATH JKB 11/18/11

  • IN A SURPRISE REVELATION, THE SONOMA COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT SAYS THAT ALCOHOL MAY NOT BE THE CAUSE OF DEATH OF A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO DIED AFTER DRINKING WHAT SHE THOUGHT WAS VODKA DURING A SLEEPOVER AT HER HOME IN JULY.

AUTHORITIES ARE NOW INVESTIGATING THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE GIRLS MAY HAVE DRUNK SOMETHING ELSE AFTER THE FIRST SET OF TOXICOLOGY TESTS SHOWED A LOW BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL IN THE BODY OF TAKEIMI RAO. RAOS AUTOPSY ALSO SHOW NO SIGNS THE GIRL ASPIRATED, ASPHYXIATED OR SUFFERED FROM ANOTHER MEDICAL EMERGENCY. A THIRD, MORE DETAILED SET OF TOXICOLOGY TESTS HAVE BEEN ORDERED AND COULD TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS TO COMPLETE.

SERIAL DRUNK DRIVER SENTENCED JKB 11/18/11

  • A SERIAL DRUNK DRIVER WAS SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS IN STATE PRISON YESTERDAY, BUT BECAUSE OF THE RECENT CHANGES IN STATE LAW, WILL SERVE ONLY ABOUT HALF THAT TIME IN THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

58 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS SANTOS HAS BEEN CONVICTED OF FOUR DUIS IN THE LAST SIX YEARS. DUE TO THE STATES REALIGNMENT LEGISLATION DESIGNED TO EASE OVERCROWDING IN THE STATE PRISONS, SANTOS HAS ALREADY EARNED CREDIT FOR TIME SERVED AGAINST HIS SENTENCE AND WILL NOT HAVE TO BE ON PAROLE OR PROBATION WHEN HE IS RELEASED.

DEATH ROW INMATE COMMITS SUICIDE JKB 11/18/11

  • AN INMATE ON CALIFORNIAS DEATH ROW WAS FOUND DEAD, THE VICTIM OF A SUICIDE YESTERDAY.

33 YEAR OLD BRANDON WILSON WAS FOUND HANGING IN HIS CELL THURSDAY MORNING SHORTLY BEFORE 7 AM. HE WAS CONVICTED OF KILLING 9 YEAR OLD MATTHEW CECCHI OF OROVILLE IN AN OCEANSIDE PARK RESTROOM IN 1998 IN A CASE MADE NATIONAL HEADLINES. WILSON IS THE 19TH INMATE TO COMMIT SUICIDE WHILE ON DEATH ROW SINCE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT WAS REINSTATED IN CALIFORNIA IN 1978. 54 CONDEMNED INMATES HAVE DIED FROM NATURAL CAUSES DURING THAT TIME, SIX DEATHS HAVE OCCURRED FROM OTHER CAUSES INCLUDING MURDER, WHILE ONLY 13 HAVE ACTUALLY SERVED THEIR SENTENCE AND BEEN PUT TO DEATH.

E-QUAKE AT THE GEYSERS JKB 11/18/11

  • THE GEYSERS WERE RATTLED BY A 3.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE EARLY THIS MORNING, THE 21ST QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE AREA SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 2:59 AM AND WAS CENTERED 3 MILES NORTH WEST OF THE STEAM FIELDS AND 7 MILES WEST OF COBB.

PLANNED POWER OUTAGE JKB 11/18/11

  • PG&E WILL BE STAGING A PLANNED POWER OUTAGE IN WILLITS TOMORROW NIGHT.

DURING THE REPLACEMENT AND UPGRADING OF EQUIPMENT TO THE WILLITS SUBSTATION, THE POWER WILL BE OUT FROM 11 PM SATURDAY NIGHT UNTIL AROUND 8 AM SUNDAY MORNING. AN ESTIMATED 6,000 WILLITS AREA PG&E CUSTOMER WILL BE AFFECTED. THIS WEEKENDS POWER OUTAGE IS THE SECOND STAGE OF THE SAME PROJECT THAT WAS THE REASON FOR A PLANNED OUTAGE THAT OCCURRED ON SEPTEMBER 17TH.

UKIAH COUNCIL APPROVES COST INCREASE FOR ANTON STADIUM JKB 11/18/11

  • ON A VOTE OF FOUR TO ONE, THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL APPROVED MORE THAN $120,000 IN CHANGES TO THE ANTON STADIUM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.

THE COST INCREASES ARE OVER AN ABOVE THE ORIGINAL BID OF HALF A MILLION DOLLARS AND AN INITIAL COST INCREASE OF $40,000 THAT WAS REQUESTED JUST A MONTH AFTER THE PROJECT WAS APPROVED LAST APRIL. A LIST OF 10 CHANGES CLASSIFIED AS PLAN CLARIFICATIONS, DESIGN MODIFICATIONS, AND DESIGN AND ENGINEERING WORK FOR THE METAL BUILDING MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INCREASED COSTS. COUNCIL MEMBER DOUG CRANE WAS THE ONLY DISSENTING VOTE.
