  • THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A HIGH WIND WARNING FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 2000 FEET IN THE LAKE COUNTY AREA THAT WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM TOMORROW MORNING.

A WIND ADVISORY FOR LOWER ELEVATIONS WILL ALSO GO INTO EFFECT AT 9 AM THIS MORNING. WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MILES AN HOUR WITH GUSTS BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MILES AN HOUR POSSIBLE OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND THROUGH PASSES AND CANYONS. MOTORISTS IN HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE DRIVING. HOME OWNERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SECURE LOOSE PROPERTY.

FATAL OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING JUSTIFIED JKB 11/30/11

  • AN INVESTIGATION HAS FOUND THAT SONOMA COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES AND A CHP OFFICER WERE JUSTIFIED IN THEIR USE OF DEADLY FORCE THAT RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF A SANTA ROSA MAN LAST YEAR.

24 YEAR OLD NICODEMUS SULLIVAN HAD VIOLATED A RESTRAINING ORDER NUMEROUS TIMES AND WAS THREATENING TO KILL HIS STEPFATHER WHEN POLICE ARRIVED AT THE HOME ON OCTOBER 29TH 2010. SULLIVAN, WHO WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF METHAMPHETAMINE, WAS ATTEMPTING TO FLEE THE HOME IN HIS VEHICLE AND RAMMED TWO PATROL CARS IN AN ATTEMPT TO HIT DEPUTIES. FIVE OFFICERS OPENED FIRE AND SULLIVAN DIED AT THE SCENE. THE SANTA ROSA DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT THE OFFICERS USE OF DEADLY FORCE WAS NECESSARY AND APPROPRIATE FOR THE THREAT SULLIVAN POSED TO THEIR SAFETY.

HIGH SPEED CHASE JKB 11/30/11

  • A HIGH SPEED CHASE ENDED WHEN THE SUSPECT CRASHED THE CAR NEAR LAKEPORT LATE LAST NIGHT.

VERY FEW DETAILS ABOUT THE INCIDENT ARE AVAILABLE THIS MORNING. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT AROUND 11:20 PM LAST NIGHT WHEN OFFICERS TRIED TO PULL OVER A SUSPECTED STOLEN CAR. THE DRIVER FLED AND SPEEDS OF UP TO 120 MILES AN HOUR BEFORE CRASHING NEAR HILL ROAD AND PARKWAY, CLOSE TO THE LAKEPORT FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT STATION 52. THE DRIVER, WHOS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED WAS TREATED FOR INJURIES AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL. NO OTHER INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE.

MOTORCYCLE VS. CAR JKB 11/30/11

  • TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED WHEN A UKIAH WOMAN PULLED OUT FROM HER DRIVEWAY DIRECTLY INTO THE PATH OF A MOTORCYCLIST ON EASTSIDE CALPELLA ROAD MONDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 21 YEAR OLD TIFFANY KAPLAN PULLED IN FRONT OF 20 YEAR OLD THEODORE LORENZ AT AROUND 1:40 PM. LORENZ BROAD SIDED KAPLANS VEHICLE AND WAS EJECTED FROM THE BIKE. BOTH LORENZ AND KAPLAN SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES AND WERE TAKE TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. ALCOHOL OR DRUGS ARE NOT BELIEVED TO BE FACTORS IN THE CRASH.

MEMORIAL FUND FOR FIRE SURVIVORS JKB 11/30/11

  • A MEMORIAL FUND HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR A CLEARLAKE MOTHER AND SON WHO SURVIVED A MOTOR HOME FIRE THAT KILLED ONE OF HER CHILDREN AND HER FIANCÉE IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY LAST WEEK.

THE FAMILY WAS VACATIONING IN THEIR NEWLY PURCHASED USED MOTOR HOME NEAR TRINIDAD WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE WHILE THEY WERE SLEEPING NOVEMBER 20TH. 43 YEAR OLD MICHELLE CRISTER AND 4 YEAR OLD DAVID CRISTER WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE, WITH DAVID SUFFERING SEVERE BURNS. 55 YEAR OLD JAMES GERACE JR AND 14 YEAR OLD DANIEL CRISTER DIED IN THE BLAZE, WHICH HAS BEEN RULED AS ACCIDENTAL. FRIENDS AND RELATIVES HAVE CREATED THE CRISTER-GERACE MEMORIAL FUND TO HELP MICHELE WITH MEDICAL EXPENSES. DONATIONS CAN BE MADE TO THE FUND AT ANY WESTAMERICA BANK BRANCH IN LAKE COUNTY.

NO CHARGES FILED IN SHERIFFS BLOCKAGE OF BIKERS JKB 11/30/11

  • THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE SAYS WHILE NOTHING CRIMINAL HAPPENED, THE STEPS SHERIFF FRANK RIVERO TOOK TO KEEP HELLS ANGELS OUT OF THE COUNTY MAY 14TH WAS A VIOLATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS.

RIVERO ORDERED A BLOCKADE AT THE COUNTY BOARDER ON HIGHWAY 29 TO KEEP A REPORTED 150 MEMBERS OF THE OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE CLUB OUT OF THE COUNTY AFTER RECEIVING ERRONEOUS INFORMATION THEY WERE COMING TO LAKEPORT FOR A CONFRONTATION WITH RIVAL MOTORCYCLE GANG THE VAGOS, WHO WERE IN TOWN HOLDING A LARGE GATHERING. ONLY THREE HELLS ANGELS WERE LOCATED AND STOPPED. DISTRICT ATTORNEY DON ANDERSON SAYS WHILE SHERIFF RIVEROS ACTIONS WERE WELL INTENTIONED, THEY WERE IN VIOLATION OF THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. RIVERO HAS DEFENDED THE ACTION IN THE NAME OF PUBLIC SAFETY.

TAX FOR AQUATIC CENTER SOUGHT JKB 11/30/11

  • THE FORT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL WILL ASK VOTERS TO APPROVE A HALF CENT SALES TAX INCREASE NEXT MARCH TO HELP FUND THE FINANCIALLY TROUBLED C.V STARR AQUATIC CENTER.

THE COUNCIL VOTED TO PUT THE TAX MEASURE ON THE BALLOT MONDAY, AND IS CONTINGENT ON THE CITY TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE $24 MILLION DOLLAR FACILITY, WHICH IS CURRENTLY OWNED BY THE MENDOCINO COAST RECREATION AND PARKS DISTRICT. THE STATE OF THE ART AQUATIC CENTER HAS BEEN LOSING MONEY SINCE IT OPENED IN 2009. IF APPROVED, FORT BRAGGS SALES TAX NEXT YEAR, INCLUDING A 1/8 CENT SALES TAX INCREASE APPROVED TO FUND COUNTY LIBRARIES WOULD BE 8.375%.

MEETING FOR COURT HOUSE EIR TONIGHT JKB 11/30/11

  • THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO A MEETING THAT WILL DISCUSS THE DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT THAT IS BEING PREPARED FOR TWO PROPOSED SITES FOR THE MENDOCINO COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN UKIAH TONIGHT.

BOTH PROPOSED SITES, THE LIBRARY SITE AND THE RAILROAD DEPOT SITE, WILL BE COVERED IN THE DRAFT EIR. THE MEETING IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN AT 6 PM AT THE UKIAH CITY HALL.
