HOME INVASION BURGLARS ARRESTED JKB 12/19/11

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES AND CHP OFFICERS CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION INTO A BURGLARY ON HORSESHOE CIRCLE IN POTTER VALLEY ON THURSDAY, WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME TO NAB FOUR MEN PLANNING A HOME INVASION ROBBERY.

OFFICERS NOTICED TWO VEHICLES PARKED ON THE REMOTE DIRT ROAD JUST BEFORE 10 PM. THEY FOUND FOUR MEN, TWO OF WHICH WERE DRESSED IN CAMOUFLAGE CLOTHING. ONE FLED ON FOOT AND WAS CAPTURED AFTER A SHORT CHASE. AN INVESTIGATION DISCOVERED THE FOUR MEN WERE PLANNING TO COMMIT A HOME INVASION ROBBERY WHEN THEY WERE CAUGHT. KYLE MERCER, KHANHVI DANG, DENIS HUNTER AND TREVOR JACKSON WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES.

ELDERLY COUPLE VICTIMS OF HOME INVASION ROBBERY JKB 12/19/11

  • AN ELDERLY CLEARLAKE OAKS COUPLE WERE THE VICTIMS OF A HOME INVASION ROBBERY ON FRIDAY.

ACCORDING TO THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, THE COUPLE, WHO ARE 83 AND 84 YEARS OF AGE, WERE AWAKENED IN THE BEDROOM AT AROUND 3:30 AM BY SOMEONE SHINING A FLASHLIGHT IN THEIR EYES. THEIR HANDS WERE BOUND AND THEY WERE FORCED TO LAY FACE DOWN ON THE BEDROOM FLOOR WHILE THEIR HOME WAS RANSACKED. ONE OF THE SUSPECTS SAID THEY WERE LOOKING FOR MONEY, JEWELRY, AND FIREARMS. BOTH VICTIMS WERE THEN PLACED IN A LOCKED CLOSET TOGETHER. THEY WERE ABLE TO FREE THEMSELVES AFTER THE INTRUDERS LEFT. AFTER FINDING THEIR PHONES DISABLED, THEY CONTACTED A NEIGHBOR AND CALLED POLICE. NEITHER VICTIM WAS INJURED. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CRIME IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

BURGLARY ARREST JKB 12/19/11

  • A FORT BRAGG MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH A BURGLARY THAT OCCURRED AT ROSSIS BUILDING MATERIALS ON STEWART STREET IN FORT BRAGG DECEMBER 1ST.

OFFICERS INVESTIGATING THE THEFT IDENTIFIED 36 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER MAKI AS A SUSPECT. HE WAS ARRESTED AT A HOME ON BENSON LANE LAST FRIDAY AND IS BEING HELD ON TWO OUTSTANDING ARREST WARRANTS AND BURGLARY CHARGES.

LAKE COUNTY DA WARNS FOR PHONE SCAMS JKB 12/19/11

  • LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY DON ANDERSON ON FRIDAY ISSUED A WARNING TO THE COMMUNITY ABOUT PHONE SCAMS TARGETING SENIOR CITIZENS.

ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THE CALLER CLAIMS TO REPRESENT MEDICARE OR THE SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE AND ASKS THE VICTIMS TO VERIFY OR PROVIDE INFORMATION, SUCH AS A MEDICARE NUMBER, BANK, AND CHECKING ACCOUNT INFORMATION. ALL RESIDENTS ARE ADVISED TO BE CAUTIOUS WHEN SPEAKING TO UNKNOWN INDIVIDUALS ON THE TELEPHONE, AND TO NEVER GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION.

DRUG ARREST JKB 12/19/11

  • A POTTER VALLEY WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER BEING FOUND IN POSSESSION OF DRUGS AT A LOCAL MOTEL ON SATURDAY.

33 YEAR OLD TRACEY MITCHELL WAS KNOWN TO BE ON FORMAL PROBATION WITH A SEARCH CLAUSE. DEPUTIES CONTACTED HER AT A ROOM AT THE DISCOVERY INN AT AROUND 6:30 SATURDAY EVENING. A SEARCH OF THE ROOM TURNED UP 4.7 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE. DUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION, SHE WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR A MEDICAL CLEARANCE. A TEST THERE REVEALED THAT MITCHELL WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AMPHETAMINES. SHE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL AND IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL.

OCCUPY WALMART PROTEST JKB 12/19/11

  • ABOUT 50 PROTESTORS GATHERED LATE SATURDAY MORNING ON THE EDGE OF THE WALMART PARKING LOT TO PROTEST THE STORES PROPOSED EXPANSION.

THE PROEST WAS A CAMPAIGN OF THE LOCAL OCCUPY UKIAH MOVEMENT, DUBBED OCCUPY WALMART, AND BEGAN AT AROUND 11 AM. THE GROUP DID NOT BLOCK THE STORES ENTRANCES OR HARASS CUSTOMERS, AND WAS OVER BY MID AFTERNOON.

BAY BRIDGE TO CLOSE FOR CONSTRUCTION JKB 12/19/11

  • THE WESTBOUND LANES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY BRIDGE WILL CLOSE DURING THE PRESIDENTS DAY WEEKEND IN FEBRUARY.

THE CLOSE IS EXPECTED TO LAST TWO TO THREE DAYS AND BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 18TH IN ORDER TO SPEED CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW EAST SPAN. CALTRANS SAYS THE HOURS OF CLOSURE HAVE NOT YET BEEN SET AND RAIN COULD DELAY OR LENGTHEN THE CLOSURE. CALTRANS IS CURRENTLY DISCUSSING ALTERNATIVE TRAVEL PLANS WITH BART AND FERRY SERVICES.

MENDO COUNTY TO GET $2.35 MILLION IN CALTRANS FUNDS JKB 12/19/11

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY WILL RECEIVE $2.35 MILLION DOLLARS IN FUNDING FROM CALTRANS FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF METAL BEAM GUARDRAILS AT 244 LOCATIONS ALONG HIGHWAY 1, 20, 128, 162, 253, AND 271.

THE AWARD WAS PART OF $401 MILLION DOLLARS IN FUNDING GIVEN TO 39 PROJECTS STATEWIDE FROM PROPOSITION 1B THAT WAS APPROVED BY VOTERS IN 2006.

MAN SENTENCED IN FATAL STABBING JKB 12/16/11

  • A LOS ANGELES MAN WAS SENTENCED YESTERDAY TO A YEAR IN JAIL AND FIVE YEARS PROBATION IN THE STABBING DEATH OF A GUERNEVILLE MAN THAT OCCURRED ON THE GUERNEVILLE FOOT BRIDGE LAST SUMMER.

22 YEAR OLD KEVIN PAYNE JR. PLEADED GUILTY TO FELONY VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER IN THE DEATH OF 31 YEAR OLD ELIJA LOCKHART OF SEBASTOPOL JULY 6TH. PAYNE GOT INTO AN ALTERCATION WITH LOCKHART AND 35 YEAR OLD JAMES LEWIS OF GUERNEVILLE, WHO REPORTEDLY MADE THREATS TO PAYNES FAMILY AND INSULTED HIM WITH RACIAL SLURS. PAYNE, WHO IS BLACK, GRABBED A KNIFE AWAY FROM LEWIS AFTER BACKING AWAY FROM THE TWO MEN, AND THEN STABBED LOCKHART IN THE CHEST. PAYNE COULD HAVE FACED 11 YEARS IN PRISON, BUT THE JUDGE REDUCED THE SENTENCE IN PART BECAUSE HE SAID PAYNE HAD BEEN PROVOKED BY THE VICTIM.

  • A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP ON WEDNESDAY, LED TO THE ARREST OF A TRANSIENT MAN FROM THE ALBION AREA, AFTER HE WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF HEROIN.

36 YEAR OLD OZ SIMRIN WAS PULLED OVER FOR SPEEDING NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 20 AND HIGHWAY 1 AT AROUND 8 PM DURING THE STOP, SIMRIN SHOWED SIGNS OF RECENT DRUG USE AND A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE TURNED UP 1.7 GRAMS OF HEROIN.

  • A RASH OF GRAFFITI VANDALISMS HAS TARGETED THE CITY OF LAKEPORT OVER THE PAST WEEK.

THE GRAFFITI, WHICH IS POSSIBLY GANG RELATED HAS APPEARED DURING THE NIGHT TIME HOURS ON SEVERAL DOWNTOWN STREETS BETWEEN DECEMBER 10TH AND 13TH. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THESES INCIDENTS IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE LAKEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT.

  • THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION CERTIFIED THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED WALMART EXPANSION DURING A MEETING LAST NIGHT, BUT ACKNOWLEDGED THAT APPROVAL OF THE PROJECT FACED SOME BIG CHALLENGES.

ACCORDING TO THE REPORT, THE EXPANSION IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE TRAFFIC TO BACK UP ONTO HIGHWAY 101 AT THE TALMAGE ROAD EXIT, CAUSING SIGNIFICANT TRAFFIC JAMS. ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 58 YEAR OLD PHILIP FESLER, WAS STANDING NEXT TO HIS DISABLED CAR WITH ANOTHER MOTORIST WHO HAD STOPPED TO HELP AFTER HE STRUCK A DEER ON HIGHWAY 395 AT AROUND 6 PM. HIS CAR WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER VEHICLE TRAVELING AT FREEWAY SPEED THAT HAD FAILED TO SEE FESLERS CAR IN THE DARK. BOTH FESLER AND 50 YEAR OLD MICHAEL NYE OF SUSANVILLE WERE THROWN BETWEEN 50 AND 100 FEET FROM THE POINT OF IMPACT. BOTH WERE AIRLIFTED TO A MEDICAL CENTER IN RENO NEVADA, WHERE FESLER DIED OF HIS INJURIES. NYE REMAINS IN HOSPITALIZED WITH MAJOR INJURIES. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER CAR AND HIS PASSENGER SUFFERED ONLY MINOR TO MODERATE INJURIES.

ASSAULT ARREST JKB 12/15/11

  • A COVELO MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ASSAULTING HIS BOYFRIEND AND USING A FORK AS A WEAPON EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE COVELO MOBILE HOME PARK JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT AND LEARNED FROM THE 50 YEAR OLD VICTIM THAT HE AND HIS PARTNER HAD GOTTEN INTO AN ARGUMENT. DURING THE ALTERCATION 25 YEAR OLD MICHAEL CARLSON ALLEGEDLY STRUCK THE VICTIM SEVERAL TIMES IN THE FACE AND TOOK AWAY A FORK THE VICTIM WAS TRYING TO USE TO DEFEND HIMSELF AND STABBED HIM WITH IT. THE VICTIM WAS TREATED FOR ABRASIONS TO HIS FACE AND PUNCTURE WOUNDS TO HIS TORSO. CARLSON WAS LOCATED AT THE COUPLES HOME A SHORT TIME LATER AND ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT.

SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT JKB 12/15/11

  • A CLEARLAKE WOMAN WAS INJURED IN A SOLO VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON BOTTLE ROCK ROAD YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 23 YEAR OLD NOVA WILSONFOX WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND NEAR THE SPRING HILL ROAD INTERSECTION WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HER CAR LEFT THE ROADWAY AND STRUCK A TREE AT AROUND 12:30 PM. WILSONFOX WAS FOUND UNCONSCIOUS WITH AN APPARENT HEAD INJURY AND AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. NO WORD YET ON HER CONDITION. THE ACCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION. ALCOHOL IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE A FACTOR IN THE CRASH.

MAN ACQUITTED OF CHILD MOLESTATION JKB 12/15/11

  • A LAKE COUNTY JURY YESTERDAY, TOOK ONLY ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE ACQUITTING A MIDDLETOWN MAN ACCUSED OF MOLESTING HIS GIRLFRIENDS 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER.

THE JURY UNANIMOUSLY FOUND REASONABLE DOUBT IN THE CASE AGAINST 52 YEAR OLD MARK KNAUP, WHO HAD BEEN CHARGED WITH FOUR COUNTS OF COMMITTING LEWD ACTS ON THE VICTIM IN LATE 2008 AND EARLY 2009. THE DEFENSE CONTENDED THE GIRL WAS ANGRY OVER BEING DISCIPLINED BY KNAUP, AND WANTED HIM OUT OF THE DATING RELATIONSHIP WITH HER MOTHER, AND SO CONCOCTED THE MOLESTATION STORY. ACCORDING TO THE DEFENSE THE JURY COULD SEE THE GIRLS CREDIBILITY WAS IN QUESTION AND THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE.

  • TIS THE SEASON FOR ALL KINDS OF HOLIDAY SCAMS, AND THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AND THE WILLITS POLICE DEPARTMENT ARE WARNING RESIDENTS OF TWO THAT HAVE POPPED UP RECENTLY.

THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT HAS REPORTED NUMEROUS CALLS ABOUT A PHONE SCAM THAT MOSTLY TARGETS THE ELDERLY. THE CALLER POSES AS A RELATIVE, USUALLY A GRANDCHILD, AND EMOTIONALLY CLAIMS TO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY OR DISTANT STATE, AND NEED MONEY FOR BAIL TO BE SENT BY WESTERN UNION. THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT ADVISES TO ALWAYS CHECK THE VALIDITY OF SUCH CALLS BY CONTACTING OTHER RELATIVES OR THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY THE CALLER PURPORTS TO BE INCARCERATED BY, BEFORE EVER SENDING MONEY.

IN WILLITS, A CALLER WHO IDENTIFIED HERSELF AS BEING FROM THE CITY, CONTACTED A LOCAL CONSIGNMENT STORE, LOOKING TO CONFIRM INFORMATION ABOUT THE BUSINESS AND ACQUIRE A 10% ASSESSMENT FEE. CITY OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS NO 10% BUSINESS ASSESSMENT FEE AND ARE WARNING BUSINESS OWNERS TO NO GIVE OUT ANY BUSINESS RELATED INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE.

  • THE NEWLY FORMED MENDOCINO PUBLIC SAFETY FOUNDATION, A LOCAL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT SEEKS TO HELP FUND THE EQUIPMENT NEEDS OF LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT, HAS ANNOUNCED THEY ARE READY TO BEGIN DISTRIBUTING $10,000 IN GRANTS.

  • FORMER LONG TIME LAKE COUNTY SUPERVISOR WALTER WILCOX DIED OF COMPLICATIONS FROM PNEUMONIA ON TUESDAY. HE WAS 83.

CHILD INJURED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT JKB 12/14/11

  • A THREE YEAR OLD GIRL WAS INJURED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 53 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

THE BLAZE, WHICH BEGAN AT 5:46 PM, REPORTEDLY STARTED OUT AS A CHIMNEY FIRE BUT BEGAN TO SPREAD INTO THE SURROUNDING STRUCTURE. FIREFIGHTERS REMOVED SIDING FROM THE HOME TO GAIN ACCESS THE FLAMES IN THE WALLS AND HAD IT COMPLETELY UNDER CONTROL IN LESS THAN A HALF HOUR. THE FIRE CAUSED MINOR COSMETIC AND SMOKE DAMAGE. THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE BLAZE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

TWO HORSEBACK RIDERS RESCUED JKB 12/13/11

  • A SONOMA COUNTY SHERIFFS HELICOPTER CREW WAS CALLED TO MARIN COUNTY FOR THE SECOND TIME IN TWO DAYS ON SUNDAY TO RESCUE TWO HORSE BACK RIDERS WHO WERE INJURED WHEN THEY WERE THROWN FROM THEIR HORSES WHILE RIDING ON A REMOTE TRAIL IN THE WHITES HILL OPEN PRESERVE.

ONE HORSE REPORTEDLY SLIPPED OFF THE TRAIL THROWING ITS RIDER, WHICH SPOOKED THE SECOND HORSE, CAUSING THE RIDER TO FALL. THE TWO HORSES RETURNED RIDERLESS TO THE BAYWOOD RIDING STABLE IN FAIRFAX AND CONCERNED WORKERS CALLED 911. THE TWO RIDERS WERE LOCATED AND AIRLIFTED TO A WAITING AMBULANCE FOR TREATMENT. JUDGE TANSIL DID SUGGEST POSTPONING A FINAL DECISION UNTIL THE CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT HAS DECIDED A SIMILAR CASE.

POLICE HAVE NOT SAID HOW SMITH WAS ABLE TO STEAL THE GAS, BUT SAY IT WAS BEING PUMPED INTO TWO LARGE CONTAINERS IN THE BACK OF THE VAN. SMITH SUFFERED BURNS TO HIS FACE AND WAS TREATED AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL, BUT REFUSED TO COOPERATE WITH THE INVESTIGATION. HE DISAPPEARED AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL AND HAS SUCCESSFULLY EVADED DETECTIVES WORKING ON THE CASE.

HIT AND RUN SUSPECT ARRESTED JKB 12/7/11

  • EYE WITNESSES TO A HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT IN FORT BRAGG HELPED POLICE TRACK DOWN THE SUSPECT TO MAKE AN ARREST.

THE VICTIM REPORTED THAT HIS PICK UP TRUCK HAD BEEN HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. TWO INDEPENDENT WITNESSES WHO SAW THE COLLISION AND THE SUSPECT FLEE WERE ABLE TO GIVE POLICE A DESCRIPTION OF THE MAKE MODEL AND LICENSE PLATE NUMBER OF HIS VEHICLE. THE SUSPECTS TRUCK TURNED OUT TO BE REGISTERED IN FAIRFIELD CALIFORNIA TO JUAN ESTELLA SALAS, WHO HAD MOVED TO FORT BRAGG. SALAS HAD AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT FOR DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE. HE WAS LOCATED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL AFTER BEING POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED BY THE WITNESSES AS THE DRIVER WHO FLED THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT.
