E-QUAKE NEAR CLEARLAKE JKB 1/24/12

  • A 3.9 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE SHOOK RESIDENTS AWAKE AN AREA 4 MILES WEST NORTH WEST OF CLEARLAKE AND 4 MILES SOUTH-SOUTH WEST OF CLEARLAKE OAKS EARLY THIS MORNING.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 4:11 AM. IT WAS FOLLOWED BY A 2.0 MAGNITUDE AFTERSHOCK IN THE SAME AREA 17 AND A HALF MINUTES LATER. THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR INJURIES.

FATAL ID JKB 1/24/12

  • A DRIVER WHO WAS KILLED IN A TWO-CAR COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 20 THURSDAY MORNING HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 63 YEAR OLD TOM KURISKY OF WESTPORT.

KURISKY WAS TRAVELING EASTBOUND NEAR MCGUIRES POND WHEN, DUE TO EXCESSIVE SPEED, HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR AND COLLIDED WITH THE RIGHT FRONT A UTILITY TRUCK DRIVEN BY 51 YEAR OLD BRYON OUGH TRAVELING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. OUGH WAS TAKEN TO MENDOCINO COAST HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT OF MINOR INJURIES AND RELEASED.

WOMAN CONVICTED IN HATCHET ATTACK JKB 1/24/12

  • A FORT BRAGG WOMAN WHO ATTACKED TWO PEOPLE WITH AN AXE DURING A GANG RELATED FIGHT OUTSIDE THE COAST RECREATION CENTER LAST YEAR, WAS CONVICTED BY A JURY OF FELONY ASSAULT AND BATTERY CHARGES ON FRIDAY.

22 YEAR OLD MARICRUZ ALVAREZ-CARRILLO AND HER BOYFRIEND ENCOUNTERED TWO RIVAL GANG MEMBERS WHILE DRIVING JANUARY 28TH OF LAST YEAR, AND AN ALTERCATION ENSUED. DURING THE FIGHT, ALVAREZ-CARRILLO STRUCK 18 YEAR OLD ALISSA COLBERG SEVERAL TIMES WITH THE AXE, INFLICTING SERIOUS GASHES TO HER CHEST AND FACE. SHE WILL BE SENTENCED FEBRUARY 24TH.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTACK ON ELDERLY WOMAN JKB 1/24/12

  • A GUALALA MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ATTACKING HIS GRANDMOTHER IN HER HOME SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME SHORTLY BEFORE 1 PM. 85 YEAR OLD BETTY ONEIL TOLD THEM SHE HAD BEEN ASSAULTED BY HER GRANDSON, 26 YEAR OLD MELVIN KING AND THAT HE HAD FLED ON FOOT WHEN HE HEARD POLICE HAD BEEN CALLED. SHE STATED THAT KING, WHO LIVES WITH HER IN AN APARTMENT ATTACHED TO THE HOME, HAD BEEN THREATENING AND INTIMIDATING HER INTO GIVING HIM MONEY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, AND THAT SHE HAD GIVEN HIM THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OUT OF FEAR FOR HER SAFETY. KING WAS LOCATED WALKING ON HIGHWAY 1 NEAR DOWNTOWN GUALALA AND ARRESTED FOR EXTORTION, MAKING TERRORIST THREATS AND ELDER ABUSE.

MAN ARRESTED FOR VANDALISM JKB 1/24/12

  • A UKIAH FATHER HAD TO CALL POLICE ON HIS 20 YEAR OLD SON AFTER HE REPORTEDLY WAS ACTING STRANGE AND BREAKING WINDOWS AT HIS FATHERS HOUSE SATURDAY NIGHT.

THE FATHER, GILBERTO OLEAVARGAS REPORTED THAT HIS SON WAS VANDALIZING HIS HOME ON NORTH STATE STREET AND SHOWED SYMPTOMS OF BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A NARCOTIC. HE SIGNED A CITIZENS ARRESTED WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED TO HAVE HIS SON ARRESTED FOR VANDALISM. THE SON WAS TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR CLEARANCE AND LATER PLACED IN A SAFETY CELL AT THE JAIL FOR PROTECTION.

CAR STRIPPER SOUGHT JKB 1/24/12

  • UKIAH POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A MAN BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEFT AND DISMANTLING A COUPLE OF VEHICLES RECENTLY.

OFFICERS INVESTIGATING THE THEFT OF A DELIVERY TRUCK LAST WEEK, DISCOVERED PIECES OF THE DISMANTLED TRUCK AND THE ENGINE FROM ANOTHER REPORTED STOLEN VEHICLE IN THE PRIVATE SHOP OF 29 YEAR OLD JASON PRATT ON FEEDLOT LANE. THE DELIVERY TRUCK HAD BEEN STRIPPED AND THE ENGINE FROM THE STOLEN CAR WAS FOUND INSIDE ANOTHER PICK-UP. POLICE ALSO FOUND AN ILLEGAL LOADED DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. PRATT IS KNOWN TO FREQUENT WILLITS AND THE LAKE COUNTY AREA. HE WAS LAST SEEN DRIVING A RED VOLKSWAGEN JETTA WITH TINTED WINDOWS WITH A CALIFORNIA LICENSE PLATE NUMBER OF 4VVN058. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE WHEREABOUTS OF PRATT IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT.

RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS APPOINTED JKB 1/24/12

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERVISORS WERE UNANIMOUS IN THEIR SUPPORT OF ONE CANDIDATE, AND DEEPLY DIVIDED OVER THE OTHER WHEN IT CAME TO FILLING TWO VACANCIES ON THE COUNTY EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS YESTERDAY.

THE SUPERVISORS WERE IN UNANIMOUS SUPPORT OF REAPPOINTING BOB MIRATA, WHO HAS SERVED SIX YEARS ON THE BOARD. THE DECISION TO APPOINT JOHN SAKOWICZ HOWEVER WAS SPLIT, WITH SUPERVISORS HAMBURG AND SMITH, DISSENTING IN THE 3 TO 2 VOTE. SKAOWICZ IS A LONG TIME OUTSPOKEN COUNTY RETIREMENT SYSTEM CRITIC AND THE HOST OF KZYXS MONEY MATTERS RADIO PROGRAM. SUPERVISORS HAMBURG AND SMITH CALLED SAKOWICZS CRITICISM QUOTE, MERCILESS AND OVER THE TOP. SUPERVISOR SMITH ALSO SITS ON THE RETIREMENT BOARD.

FIRST CLASS STAMPS NOW COST 45 CENTS EACH. THE PRICE INCREASE IS EXPECTED TO GENERATE AN ADDITIONAL $888 MILLION DOLLARS IN ANNUAL REVENUE. IT IS THE FIRST PRICE INCREASE IN TWO AND HALF YEARS. THE FOREVER STAMPS REMAIN VALID DURING ALL PRICE INCREASES.
