MAN ARRESTED FOR GRANDFATHERS MURDER JKB 3/19/12

  • A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR THE MURDER OF HIS GRANDFATHER LATE SATURDAY.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE HOME ON EAST HILL ROAD JUST AFTER 11 PM. WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY LEARNED THAT A PHYSICAL ASSAULT HAD TAKEN PLACE BETWEEN 84 YEAR OLD RICHARD WILKINSON AND HIS GRANDSON WHO WAS CARE TAKING FOR HIM, 22 YEAR OLD KENNETH WILKINSON. FAMILY MEMBERS SAID THE ELDERLY WILKINSON WAS MISSING FROM THE HOME AND COULD NOT BE FOUND. DEPUTIES SEARCHED THE AREA AND FOUND THE VICTIM DEAD DOWNHILL OFF THE SIDE OF MARIPOSA CREEK ROAD. KENNETH WILKINSON WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON CHARGES OF MURDER. AN AUTOPSY ON THE VICTIM IS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS INCIDENT IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

FATAL ACCIDENT JKB 3/19/12

  • ONE PERSON WAS KILLED WHEN THEIR CAR STRUCK A TREE OFF HIGHWAY 20, 14 AND A HALF MILES OUTSIDE OF FORT BRAGG ON FRIDAY.

CHP OFFICERS WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE AT AROUND 10:30 AM. THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE ACCIDENT AND THE NAME OF THE VICTIM HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED.

MISSING MAN FOUND JKB 3/19/12

  • A 76 YEAR OLD MAN WITH DEMENTIA AND OTHER MEDICAL PROBLEMS, WHO WALKED AWAY FROM HIS HOME ON COBB DRIVE IN THE BROOKTRIALS TOWNSHIP OF WILLITS, WAS FOUND ALIVE AFTER A NEARLY FIVE HOUR SEARCH ON FRIDAY.

THE MAN WAS REPORTED MISSING AT AROUND NOON. 59 VOLUNTEERS FROM COUNTY SEARCH AND RESCUE, THE CITIZENS EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM, COUNTY PROBATION, THE BROOKTRIALS FIRE DEPARTMENT AND SEVEN SWORN PEACE OFFICERS PARTICIPATED IN THE SEARCH. THE ELDERLY MAN WAS FOUND BY A VOLUNTEER AND HER K-9 PARTNER AT AROUND 5:15 PM. THE MAN WAS REPORTED TO BE CONFUSED, WET AND COLD, BUT CONSCIOUS. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR A MEDICAL EVALUATION. HE IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A FULL RECOVERY.

  • THE GEYSERS WERE SHAKEN BY A 3.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE ON SATURDAY, THE 9TH QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE AREA SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 4:21 PM AND WAS CENTERED 2 MILES WEST OF COBB AND 3 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE STEAM FIELDS.

SENTENCING DELAYED IN MCGINTY CASE JKB 3/19/12

  • THE SENTENCING OF A WILLITS WOMAN CONVICTED OF SETTING FIRE TO HER HOME IN AN ATTEMPT TO KILL HERSELF AND HER QUADRIPLEGIC SON, WAS DELAYED BY A WEEK AND A HALF ON FRIDAY.

51 YEAR OLD NANCY JO MCGINTY FACES A MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF 18 AND A HALF YEARS IN PRISON AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO CHARGES OF ATTEMPTED VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER AND ARSON WITH SPECIAL ALLEGATIONS. MCGINTY HAD TAKEN CARE OF HER SON BY HERSELF FOR FOUR YEARS AND SAID SHE HAD FINALLY REACHED A POINT WHERE SHE COULD NO LONGER DO IT AND WANTED TO KILL HERSELF. SHE CLAIMED HER SON AGREED TO DIE WITH HER. PROSECUTORS SAY HOWEVER THAT MCGINTY WAS NOT IN THE HOUSE AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION AND FIRE. HER SON, MICHAEL FAUSTINA WAS SAVED BY A NEIGHBOR WHO PULLED HIM FROM THE BURNING HOME. DISTRICT ATTORNEY DAVID EYSTER IS ASKING FOR A 13 YEAR SENTENCE. MCGINTYS DEFENSE ATTORNEY ARGUED THAT MCGINTY IS NOT A THREAT TO OTHERS AND HAS ASKED FOR 3 YEARS PROBATION, OR A 9 YEAR SENTENCE IF THAT OPTION IS UNAVAILABLE. JUDGE RICHARD HENDERSON SAID HE WAS TAKE THE MATTER UNDER CONSIDERATION AND WILL RENDER A DECISION ON WEDNESDAY MARCH 28TH.

43 YEAR OLD SPENCER BREITREITER OF KELSEYVILLE WAS IDENTIFIED AS ONE OF THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSPORTING MULTIPLE POUNDS OF MARIJUANA TO A LOCATION IN WISCONSIN. A STORAGE UNIT RENTAL AGREEMENT FOUND IN HIS POSSESSION LED POLICE TO SEARCH THE KELSEYVILLE HOME OF 45 YEAR OLD ELIZABETH LANGO AND HER 28 YEAR OLD SON BRANDON AUGSBURGER. INSIDE OFFICERS FOUND 47 GROWING MARIJUANA PLANTS, 20 POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA, A SHEET OF LSD CONTAINING APPROXIMATELY 100 HITS A 20 GAUGE SHOTGUN, DIGITAL SCALES AND MORE THAN $16,000 IN CASH. DETECTIVES ALSO SEIZED A BANK ACCOUNT IN LANGOS NAME THAT CONTAINED MORE THAN $20,000. A SEARCH OF THE STORAGE UNIT TURNED UP A LEXUS AND 96 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA PACKAGED IN VACCUUM SEALED BAGS.

  • ACTING ON A CONFIDENTIAL TIP, MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES ARRESTED TWO MEN WITH A CACHE OF ILLEGAL WEAPONS IN BOONVILLE ON FRIDAY.

DEPUTIES SERVED A SEARCH WARRANT ON THE HOME OF 45 YEAR OLD VINCE BALLEW AT AROUND 4 PM. DURING A SEARCH OF THE PROPERTY, POLICE LOCATED 26 FIREARMS, INCLUDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF RIFLES, SHOTGUNS AND HANDGUNS. FIVE OF THE WEAPONS WERE ASSAULT RIFLES, ONE WAS AN UZI MACHINE GUN AND TWO WERE LATER DETERMINED TO HAVE BEEN STOLEN DURING A BURGLARY IN UKIAH IN OCTOBER. VARIOUS TYPES AND AMOUNTS OF AMMUNITION WERE ALSO LOCATED AT THE HOME. BALLEW WAS ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF THE ILLEGAL AND STOLEN WEAPONS. 40 YEAR OLD PATRICK MARIANI OF PHILO WAS ARRESTED ON THE SAME CHARGES, AS WELL AS BEING A CONVICTED FELON IN POSSESSION OF FIREARMS.

57 YEAR OLD LINDA THOMAS, ALSO KNOW AS LIND SILVA WAS ARRESTED MARCH 8TH AFTER ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING SOMEONE WITH A HAMMER AT CHINS CAFÉ AND MOTEL. A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER IN THE JAILS FEMALE UNIT WAS NOTIFIED AT ABOUT 5 AM THAT THOMAS WAS IN NEED OF MEDICAL ASSISTANCE, FOUND HER NOT BREATHING IN HER CELL, AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED FOR MEDICAL HELP. CORRECTIONS OFFICERS BEGAN CPR, BUT THOMAS WAS LATER PRONOUNCED DEAD AT ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL. AN INVESTIGATION INTO HER DEATH HAS BEGUN, BUT AUTHORITIES SAY THERE IS NO INDICATION OF FOUL PLAY. AN AUTOPSY HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY.

  • CALIFORNIA PARK RANGERS ARE WARNING SURFERS TO STAY OUT OF THE OCEAN AFTER A GREAT WHITE SHARK LEAPED OUT OF THE WATER AND ATTACKED AN ELEPHANT SEAL OFF OF WADDELL CREEK BEACH IN SANTA CRUZ SUNDAY.

SURFERS SPOTTED THE ATTACK ABOUT 150 YARDS OFF THE CREEK MOUTH. SIGNS WERE POSTED EARLIER THIS WEEK WARNING BEACH GOERS TO STAY OUT OF THE WATER. OFFICIALS HAVE DETERMINED THERE IS NO DIRECT THREAT BECAUSE THE ATTACK WAS BEYOND THE SURF BREAK. AS A PRECAUTION THE SIGNS WILL REMAIN UP THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

  • A WOMAN WAS SEVERELY INJURED AFTER HER CAR LEFT HIGHWAY 20 NEAR THE NORTH FORK CACHE CREEK BRIDGE AND CRASHED 50 TO 80 FEET DOWN AN EMBANKMENT THURSDAY MORNING.

THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT 8:47 AM. IT TOOK RESCUE CREWS ALMOST AN HOUR TO EXTRICATE THE WOMAN FROM THE WRECKAGE AND TRANSPORT HER TO THE CAL FIRE STATION AT WILBUR SPRINGS WHERE SHE WAS AIRLIFTED TO ENLOE HOSPITAL IN CHICO. HER NAME AND CONDITION HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED. NO OTHER DETAILS ABOUT THE ACCIDENT WERE AVAILABLE.

THE CASE IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS GROWING LOCATION OR THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT, IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

E-QUAKE NEAR CLEARLAKE OAKS JKB 3/14/12

  • A 3.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE SHOOK AN AREA HALF WAY BETWEEN CLEARLAKE AND CLEARLAKE OAKS LATE LAST NIGHT.

THE QUAKE WAS CENTERED 5 MILES NORTH EAST OF CLEARLAKE AND 5 MILES EAST OF CLEARLAKE OAKS. IT OCCURRED AT 11:30 PM. IT WAS FOLLOWED BY A 2.8 MAGNITUDE AFTERSHOCK 6 MINUTES LATER. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR INJURIES.

HOME INVASION ROBBERY JKB 3/14/12

  • LAKE COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING ANOTHER MARIJUANA RELATED HOME INVASION ROBBERY THAT OCCURRED AT A RESIDENCE ON BIG VALLEY ROAD IN LAKEPORT LAST WEDNESDAY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE THE MALE VICTIM WAS CONTACTED OUTSIDE HIS HOUSE BY TWO UNKNOWN HISPANIC MALES ON FOOT, WITH A THIRD HISPANIC MALE IN THE DRIVERS SEAT OF A DARK COLORED LATE MODEL SUV. HE WAS FORCE INSIDE HIS HOME AT GUNPOINT BY ONE SUSPECT, WHILE THE OTHER HELD A TASER GUN. HE, HIS WIFE, AND A MALE FRIEND WHO JUST HAPPENED TO STOP BY WERE TIED UP. THE MALE FRIEND WAS ASSAULTED. TWO OR THREE MORE HISPANIC MALES ENTERED THE HOME AND SEARCHED THE RESIDENCE TAKING APPROXIMATELY TWO POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA AND $1500 IN CASH. THE VICTIMS WERE EVENTUALLY ABLE TO FREE THEM SELVES, BUT WAITED THREE HOURS TO CALL POLICE BECAUSE THE SUSPECTS THREATENED TO KILL THEM IF THEY MOVED. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS CRIME IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

GUILTY PLEA IN SEX ASSAULT JKB 3/14/12

  • A LAKEPORT MAN HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO SEXUALLY ASSAULTING A FEMALE ACQUAINTANCE ON NEW YEARS DAY.

31 YEAR OLD CHARLES LAMB ADMITTED TO FELONY ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO COMMIT RAPE IN A PLEA BARGAIN AGREEMENT WITH PROSECUTORS. HE IS EXPECTED TO RECEIVE THE MID TERM SENTENCE OF FOUR YEARS IN STATE PRISON WHEN HE IS SENTENCED APRIL 9TH. HE WILL BE REQUIRED TO SERVE AT LEAST 85% OF HIS SENTENCE BEFORE HE IS ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE AND WILL HAVE TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER. LAMBS CONVICTION ALSO CONSTITUTES A STRIKE UNDER CALIFORNIA STATE LAW.

DRUG ARREST JKB 3/14/12

  • SHARP EYED POLICE OFFICERS ARRESTED A FORT BRAGG MAN THEY RECOGNIZED TO BE WANTED ON SEVERAL FELONY WARRANTS AS HE DROVE BY THEM ON THE STREET ON FRIDAY.

JONATHAN HOUSE QUICKLY PARKED THE VEHICLE AND FLED FROM OFFICERS ON FOOT INTO AN APARTMENT ON CYPRESS STREET. HE WAS ARRESTED A SHORT TIME LATER. A SEARCH OF THE APARTMENT AND THE VEHICLE HE WAS DRIVING TURNED UP A 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN WITH AMMUNITION, A .22 CALIBER SEMI AUTOMATIC RIFLE WITH AMMUNITION, AND SEVERAL PLASTIC BAGGIES CONTAINING METHAMPHETAMINE PACKAGED FOR SALE. HOUSE WAS ARRESTED FOR BEING A FELON IN POSSESSION OF FIREARMS AND DRUG CHARGES. THE TENANT OF THE APARTMENT, AMANDA COGGINS WAS NOT HOME AT THE TIME OF THE ARREST, AND THE CASE HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE FOR POSSIBLE PROSECUTION. CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES WAS ALSO CALLED IN, SINCE IT APPEARED THAT CHILDREN LIVED IN THE HOME.

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO RESEARCH A PLAN TO REDUCE OR WAIVE SOME COUNTY BUILDING FEES FOR CERTAIN PROJECTS THAT CREATE JOBS IN AN EFFORT TO SPUR THE COUNTY ECONOMY.

LAKE COUNTY ADOPTED A SIMILAR FEE WAIVER PROGRAM IN RECENT MONTHS.   • A LAYTONVILLE WOMAN WAS KILLED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 101 JUST NORTH OF WILLITS YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 61 YEAR OLD GLORIA LOCKETT WAS TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HER CAR CROSSED OVER THE CENTERLINE DIRECTLY INTO THE PATH OF AN INTERNATIONAL FLATBED TRUCK BEING DRIVEN BY 31 YEAR OLD JASON WALKER OF WILLITS AT AROUND 8:20 AM. LOCKET DIED AT THE SCENE. WALKER WAS NOT INJURED. BOTH DRIVERS WERE WEARING SEAT BELTS. THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE CRASH IS CONTINUING.

DEPUTY SHOOTING OF FUGITIVE JUSTIFIED JKB 3/13/12

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE HAS DETERMINED THAT THE DEPUTY INVOLVED FATAL SHOOTING OF A PRISON PAROLEE IN NOVEMBER OF 2010 WAS LEGALLY JUSTIFIED.

ACCORDING TO THE D.A.S OFFICE, THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE BY DEPUTY JASON COX AGAINST 32 YEAR OLD SHANE HUTCHINS WAS OBJECTIVELY REASONABLE. HUTCHINS WAS BEING SOUGHT IN NUMBER OF CRIMES INCLUDING RAPE, KIDNAPPING, ASSAULT, BURGLARY, AUTO THEFT AND ELUDING POLICE IN LAKE, MENDOCINO, AND KERN COUNTIES. HUTCHINGS WAS SHOT AS HE REACHED FOR HIS WAIST BAND WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ESCAPE FROM A HOUSE AT NIGHT IN FORT BRAGG. ALTHOUGH HE WAS NOT ARMED AT THE TIME, HUTCHINGS HAD MADE STATEMENTS THAT HE WOULD NOT BE VOLUNTARILY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

MICHAEL HOSSACK, DOOBIE BROTHERS DRUMMER DIES JKB 3/13/12

  • ONE TIME DOOBIE BROTHERS DRUMMER AND FORMER LAKE COUNTY RESIDENT MICHAEL HOSSACK HAS DIED.

HOSSACK DIED MONDAY AT HIS HOME IN DUBOIS WYOMING AFTER A LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER. HE WAS 65. HE HAD BEEN ON LEAVE FROM THE DOOBIE BROTHERS SINCE 2010 DUE TO HEALTH REASONS.

MAN ARRESTED FOR STABBING DOG JKB 3/13/12

  • A CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY STABBED A DOG WITH A LARGE KNIFE ON SATURDAY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE 73 YEAR OLD BRIAN HAGAN WAS WALKING HIS DOG WHEN HE EXCHANGED WORDS WITH THE OWNER OF A PIT BULL TERRIER ON HOOVER STREET WHILE ON HIS WAY TO CHECK HIS MAIL. ON HIS RETURN HAGAN ALLEGEDLY USED A 7 AND A HALF INCH KNIFE ATTACHED TO HIS FOUR AND A HALF FOOT WALKING STICK TO ATTACK THE PIT BULL, CAUSING A 9 INCH LONG, TWO INCH DEEP GASH ON THE BACK OF THE PIT BULL. THE DOG WAS TAKEN TO A VET WHERE IT WAS OPERATED ON AND EXPECTED TO RECOVER. HAGAN WAS ARRESTED AT HIS HOME ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES LATER THAT EVENING. ACCORDING TO POLICE, HAGAN HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN TWO SIMILAR INCIDENTS WHERE HE STABBED DOGS CLAIMING SELF DEFENSE IN 2008 AND 2010.

WILLOWS WOMAN ARRESTED IN WEEKEND KIDNAPPING JKB 3/13/12

45 YEAR OLD MELISSA BRITTON WAS ARRESTED IN WILLOWS THE SAME DAY 30 YEAR OLD LEONARD DALE TUTTLE JR. WAS ARRESTED IN COVELO FOR THE KIDNAPPING OF 2 YEAR OLD RANDI AND 5 YEAR OLD VANESSA MARTINEZ. TUTTLE WAS THE EX-BOYFRIEND OF THE GIRLS MOTHER AND TOOK THE CHILDREN WITHOUT PERMISSION. A MOTORIST WHO HEARD ABOUT THE AMBER ALERT ISSUED FRIDAY FOR THE GIRLS ALERTED POLICE TO TUTTLES WHEREABOUTS AND FOLLOWED HIM TO HIS HOME IN COVELO WHERE HE WAS ARRESTED. TUTTLE AND BRITTON HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH KIDNAPPING, CHILD STEALING AND CONSPIRACY.

PROSECUTORS HAVE NOT DECIDED IF THEY WILL SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST HIS ACCOMPLICE GIRLFRIEND, 28 YEAR OLD HOLLY GRIGSBY. SHE WILL BE TRIED AT A LATER DATE. THE COUPLES PROSECUTION IN WASHINGTON STATE MAKES IT UNCLEAR HOW IT WILL IMPACT HUMBOLDT COUNTY PROSECUTORS DECISION IN THE DEATH OF 53 YEAR OLD REGINALD CLARK, OR OREGON STATE AUTHORITIES IN THE DEATH OF 19 YEAR OLD CODY MYERS.   • A FORT BRAGG WOMAN SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AFTER LOSING CONTROL OF HER CAR ON HIGHWAY 20 AND OVERTURNING DOWN AN EMBANKMENT EARLY THIS MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 26 YEAR OLD APRIL CONTI WAS TRAVELING WESTBOUND WHEN HER CAR LEFT THE ROADWAY AND OVERTURNED SEVERAL TIMES 300 TO 500 FEET DOWN A STEEP EMBANKMENT 22 MILES EAST OF HIGHWAY 1 AT AROUND 1 AM. DESPITE SUFFERING SEVERE INJURIES, SHE WAS ABLE TO EXTRICATE HER SELF FROM THE VEHICLE AND CLIMB BACK UP TO THE ROADWAY WHERE SHE FLAGGED DOWN A PASSING MOTORISTS WHO CALLED 911. CONTIS WORRIED BOYFRIEND WHO WENT LOOKING FOR HER AFTER BEING TWO HOURS LATE, LOCATED HER AND THE MOTORIST AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME AND TRANSPORTED HER TO HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. DRUGS OR ALCOHOL ARE NOT SUSPECTED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE CRASH. THE ACCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

THE HIKER CALLED FAMILY MEMBERS ON HIS CELL PHONE AND SAID HE WAS TRYING TO FIND HIS WAY OUT OF THE PARK. A CHP HELICOPTER WAS DISPATCHED TO AID IN THE SEARCH JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT. THEY WERE ABLE TO SPOT THE HIKERS HEADLAMP USING NIGHT VISION GOGGLES. THE WAYWARD HIKER WAS DESCRIBED AS COLD BUT UNINJURED WHEN THEY LANDED TO PICK HIM UP. HIS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

  • A MONTH LONG UNDERCOVER OPERATION BY NARCOTICS DETECTIVES HAS LED TO THE ARREST OF A LAKEPORT MAN.

41 YEAR OLD NOE REYES GUTIERREZ HAD BEEN UNDER INVESTIGATION SINCE LATE DECEMBER WHEN HE SOLD AN OUNCE OF METHAMPHETAMINE TO AN UNDERCOVER DETECTIVE IN YUBA CITY. A MONTH LATER HE MET AGAIN WITH THE SAME DETECTIVE IN CLEARLAKE AND SOLD ANOTHER OUNCE OF METH. A THIRD DELIVERY WAS SET UP FOR FEBRUARY 2ND FOR THE SALES OF TWO OUNCES OF METH THAT GUTIERREZ SAID WOULD BE READY THE NEXT DAY. HE WAS ARRESTED WHEN NARCOTICS AGENTS SWEPT IN AND SERVED A SEARCH WARRANT ON HIS HOME FEBRUARY 3RD.

  • A CLEARLAKE MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF NEARLY A POUND A CRYSTAL METHAMPHETAMINE LAST MONTH.

NARCOTICS TASK FORCE MEMBERS SERVING A SEARCH WARRANT ON THE HOME OF 52 YEAR OLD RICKY BRYAN LOCATED THE METH IN A LOCKED SAFE IN BRYANS BEDROOM. THEY ALSO FOUND $3,240 IN CASH A LOADED .22 CALIBER PISTOL, A LOADED 9 MILLIMETER PISTOL, FIVE POUNDS OF MARIJUANA AND SEVERAL GLASS PIPES USED TO SMOKE METHAMPHETAMINE. BRYAN WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AT THE SCENE AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES.

BURGLARY ARRESTS JKB 3/12/12

  • FOUR JUVENILES AND AN 18 YEAR OLD FORT BRAGG MAN WERE ARRESTED ON BURGLARY CHARGES AFTER DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO TWO BURGLARIES ON CONSECUTIVE DAYS ON ALBION RIDGE ROAD LAST WEEK.

THE BURGLARIES OCCURRED ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY OF LAST WEEK. WHILE INVESTIGATING THOSE CRIMES, DEPUTIES MADE CONTACT WITH THE JUVENILES AT ANOTHER HOME LOCATED ON ALBION RIDGE ROAD. BASED ON THOSE INTERVIEWS, DEPUTIES OBTAINED A SEARCH WARRANT AND FOUND NUMEROUS ITEMS OF STOLEN PROPERTY TAKEN FROM THE TWO LOCATIONS. ALL OF THE STOLEN PROPERTY WAS RECOVERED. THREE JUVENILE BOYS AND ONE GIRL BETWEEN THE AGES 15 AND 16 WERE ARRESTED ON FRIDAY. 18 YEAR OLD MARCUS BAKER WAS IDENTIFIED AS A SUSPECT AND ARRESTED AT HIS HOME ON SATURDAY.

MAN INJURED, TRAPPED UNDER TRAVEL TRAILER JKB 3/9/12

  • A WILLITS MAN WAS INJURED WHEN A 30 FOOT TRAVEL TRAILER FELL ON TOP OF HIM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO REPORTS, SCOTT WHITE WAS JACKING UP THE FRONT OF THE TRAILER STORED AT THE VALLEY OAKS TRAILER PARK AFTER ITS SUPPORT POSTS HAD SUNK INTO WET GROUND. THE JACK WHITE WAS USING FAILED AND THE TRAILER FELL ONTO HIS LAP, PINNING HIM TO THE GROUND AT AROUND 2:45 PM. IT TOOK FIREFIGHTERS 20 MINUTES TO FREE WHITE FROM UNDERNEATH THE TRAILER. HE WAS THEN AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS LISTED IN FAIR CONDITION AS OF YESTERDAY.

HOME DAMAGED BY FIRE JKB 3/9/12

  • AN ALERT NEIGHBOR AND QUICK ACTION BY FIREFIGHTERS HELP SAVE A HOME FROM BEING DESTROYED BY A FIRE IN LAKEPORT YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE NEIGHBOR NOTIFIED THE RESIDENTS OF THE HOME ON ARMSTRONG STREET THAT SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE ATTIC VENTS JUST BEFORE 10 AM. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ON SCENE WITHIN MINUTES AND HAD THE BLAZE CONTAINED BY 11:15. NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE FIRE CAUSED MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE HOME, AND THE RESIDENTS WILL BE DISPLACED FOR A FEW DAYS WHILE REPAIRS ARE MADE. THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT IT IS BELIEVED THE FIRE MAY HAVE ESCAPED FROM THE FIREPLACE FLUE AND SPREAD.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, IT APPEARED THE WOMAN WAS TRAVELING EASTBOUND ON OLYMPIC DRIVE WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASONS SHE ACCELERATED SUDDENLY AND STRUCK A DRAINAGE DITCH AND CULVERT AT AROUND 10:50 AM. HER VAN BECAME AIRBORNE AND COLLIDED WITH TWO VEHICLES PARKED AT LAKE EXPRESS LUBE. THE WOMAN WHOSE NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT OF UNSPECIFIED INJURIES.   • A MAN SERVING A PRISON SENTENCE FOR THE 2ND DEGREE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A POLICE OFFICER IN 1992 WAS DENIED PAROLE ON TUESDAY.

67 YEAR OLD DEWY HANSEN WAS SENTENCED TO 23 YEARS TO LIFE AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO SHOOTING CLEARLAKE RESERVE POLICE OFFICER JOHN PHILLIPS AT POINT BLANK RANGE AS PHILLIPS SEARCHED FOR HIM WHILE SERVING AN ARREST WARRANT. HANSEN LOST AN EYE IN THE RETURN FIRE. HANSEN HAD TWO PRIOR CONVICTIONS FOR ARMED ROBBERY AND ONE FOR POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE, AND HAD AN ARREST WARRANT PENDING FOR A THIRD ARMED ROBBERY ON THE DAY OF THE SHOOTING. PROSECUTORS ALSO SAY HANSEN HAD A 30 YEAR HISTORY OF CHRONIC DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE AND HAD CLAIMED TO HAVE INJECTED THREE QUARTERS OF A GRAM OF METHMPHETAMINE JUST BEFORE THE SHOOTING. THE PAROLE BOARD DENIED HANSENS RELEASE ON THE GROUNDS THAT HE STILL PRESENTED AN UNREASONABLE RISK OF DANGER TO THE PUBLIC. HE WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE AGAIN UNTIL THE YEAR 2017.

WOMANS BODY FOUND IN S.F. BAY JKB 3/8/12

THE BOY HAD BEEN ALLOWED CERTAIN PRIVILEGES, INCLUDING WORK DUTIES AND WAS ON GARBAGE DETAIL WHEN HE CLIMBED OVER A FENCE AND ESCAPED AT AROUND 8 AM. JUVENILE HALL OFFICERS SEARCHED FOR THE BOY FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF BEFORE TURNING OVER THE CASE TO THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, WHO HAVE PLACED A PICK-UP ORDER ON THE JUVENILE ESCAPEE.

PRESCRIBED BURN PLANNED FOR TOMORROW JKB 3/8/12

  • WEATHER CONDITIONS PERMITTING, A PRESCRIBED BURN USING A HELI-TORCH IS PLANNED IN THE GRINDTONE RANGER DISTRICT OF THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST NEAR LONG POINT AND FOREST HIGHWAY NUMBER SEVEN TOMORROW.

  • THE COURTROOM WAS PACKED TO OVERFLOWING AGAIN YESTERDAY DURING A PRELIMINARY HEARING FOR 33 YEAR OLD BILLY NORBURY, WHO IS ACCUSED IN THE SHOOTING DEATH OF POPULAR LOCAL MUSICIAN 30 YEAR OLD JAMAL ANDREWS.

IT WAS THE 2ND HEARING FOR NORBURY, WHOS FAMILY HAS HIRED UKIAH ATTORNEY AL KUBANIS TO REPLACE THE APPOINTED ATTORNEY FROM THE PUBLIC DEFENDERS OFFICE. A NEW PRELIMINARY HEARING WAS SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 10TH IN ORDER FOR KUBANIS TO COME UP TO SPEED ON THE CASE. NORBURY HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN THE SHOOTING OF ANDREWS JANUARY 28TH. EYSTER SAYS THE EVIDENCE INDICATES A MOTIVE OTHER THAN JUST RACE.

WILLITS BYPASS CONSTRUCTION COSTS JUMP JKB 3/8/12

  • CALTRANS OFFICIALS HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THE CONSTRUCTION COST FOR PHASE ONE OF THE RECENTLY APPROVED WILLITS BYPASS JUMPED AN EXTRA $14 MILLION DOLLARS.

ACCORDING TO CALTRANS, THE PRICE INCREASE WAS DUE TO $6 MILLION DOLLARS IN MITIGATION AND ANOTHER $8 MILLION DOLLARS FOR STRUCTURES. THE MENDOCINO COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS HAS PLEDGED $2.1 MILLION DOLLARS IN FUTURE SHARES OF TRANSPORTATION FUNDING TO HELP COVER THE COST INCREASE. THE CALTRANS INTER-REGIONAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM WILL COVER THE REST.

BROOKTRIALS BOD APPROVES FIRE TAX INCREASE MEASURE JKB 3/8/12

  • THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE BROOKTRAILS AREA TOWNSHIP OF WILLITS HAVE APPROVED PLACING A FIRE TAX INCREASE ON THE JUNE 5TH BALLOT.

IF PASSED, THE BALLOT MEASURE WILL INCREASE TAXES ON EACH OF THE 1,260 SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCES IN BROOKTRAILS BY $35 A YEAR, AND BY $60 A YEAR ON THE 4,089 UNIMPROVED PARCELS. FEES FOR THE 69 DUPLEXES IN THE TOWNSHIP WILL INCREASE BY $40 PER YEAR, ON THE 14 TRIPLEXES BY $45 A YEAR, AND THE 67 FOURPLEXES BY $50 ANNUALLY. SIX COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES AS WELL AS THE BROOKTRAILS LODGE WILL PAY AN EXTRA $55 A YEAR. THE ADDITIONAL REVENUE WILL HELP FUND PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT NEEDS OF THE BROOKTRAILS FIRE DEPARTMENT.

FORT BRAGG VOTERS BACK SALES TAX HIKE FOR CENTER JKB 3/7/12

  • FORT BRAGG VOTERS HAVE BACKED A HALF CENT SALES TAX INCREASE TO HELP SAVE THE FINANCIALLY TROUBLED C.V. STARR AQUATIC CENTER.

ACCORDING TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE, ALMOST 75% OF VOTERS GAVE THE THUMBS UP TO THE TAX INCREASE THAT IS EXPECTED TO RAISE NEARLY $700,000 A YEAR FOR THE CENTER. FORT BRAGGS CURRENT SALES TAX RATE IS 7.75%. A COUNTY WIDE 1/8TH CENT SALES TAX INCREASE APPROVED BY VOTERS TO HELP FUND LIBRARIES WILL GO INTO EFFECT APRIL 1ST. THE AQUATIC CENTER SALES TAX INCREASE WILL GO INTO EFFECT IN JULY BRINGING THE SALES TAX RATE IN FORT BRAGG TO 8.375%, MAKING IT THE HIGHEST IN THE COUNTY.

MAN ARRESTED FOR CAR THEFT JKB 3/7/12

  • A UKIAH MAN SUSPECTED OF DISMANTLING STOLEN VEHICLES WAS ARRESTED BY SACRAMENTO AUTHORITIES IN CARMICHAEL LAST WEEK.

LOCAL AUTHORITIES HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR 29 YEAR OLD JASON PRATT SINCE JANUARY 18TH WHEN DETECTIVES WITH THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT FOUND STOLEN VEHICLES IN HIS SHOP ON FEEDLOT LANE THAT HAD BEEN STRIPPED AND CUT APART. PRATT WAS TRANSPORTED TO UKIAH LATE LAST WEEK AND HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON CHARGES OF RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY AND BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE.

  • THE GEYSERS WERE SHAKEN BY A 3.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE EARLY THIS MORNING, THE 8TH QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE AREA SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 12:57 AM AND WAS CENTERED 2 MILES NORTH OF THE STEAM FIELDS AND 5 MILES WEST OF COBB.

30 YEAR OLD TESTIMONY ADMISSIBLE JKB 3/7/12

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY JUDGE ANN MOORMAN HAS RULED THAT TESTIMONY FROM A VICTIM THAT WAS ALLEGEDLY ABUSED 30 YEARS AGO IS ADMISSIBLE IN THE CURRENT MOLESTATION TRIAL OF 68 YEAR OLD RICHARD KRUSE OF ALBION.

KRUSE IS ACCUSED OF MOLESTING A 6 OR 7 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO WAS ON HIS WATER SKI TEAM, BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER OF 2007. HE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH COMMITTING LEWD AND LASCIVIOUS ACTS WITH A CHILD YOUNGER THAN 14 AND PERFORMING SEXUAL ACTS ON A CHILD YOUNGER THAN 10, ALONG WITH SPECIAL ALLEGATIONS. ACCORDING TO THE PROSECUTORS OFFICE A FORMER RESIDENT OF THE COUNTY SAYS SHE WAS MOLESTED IN A SIMILAR FASHION 30 YEARS AGO BY KRUSE AND IS PREPARED TO TESTIFY. SHE IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THE STAND MARCH 14TH OR 15TH. JURY SELECTION FOR THE TRIAL BEGAN MONDAY.

BOMB SCARE TRIGGERED BY PAPER SCROLL JKB 3/7/12

  • AUTHORITIES HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT A BOMB SCARE THAT SHUT DOWN DISNEYLAND FOR CLOSE TO THREE HOURS ON SATURDAY WAS CAUSED BY A ROHNERT PARK MAN WHO PLACED A SCROLL OF PAPER IN A TREE FOR GOOD LUCK.

THE UNIDENTIFIED MAN WAS AT THE AMUSEMENT PARK WITH HIS DAUGHTER AND HER YOUTH FOOTBALL SPIRIT TEAM FOR A NATIONAL CHEERLEADING COMPETITION. HE WOTE SOMETHING ORNATELY ON PAPER, ROLLED IT UP AND PLACED IT IN A TREE NEAR A TICKET BOOTH FOR GOOD LUCK. A PARK EMPLOYEE PERFORMING A ROUTINE INSPECTION SPOTTED THE SUSPICIOUS OBJECT JUST AFTER 7 AM AND A BOMB SQUAD WAS CALLED IN WHEN IT COULD NOT BE DETERMINED WHAT IT WAS. THE MAN WHO PLACED THE SCROLL CALLED POLICE AFTER SEEING THE PARK HAD BEEN CLOSED ON THE NEWS AND DESCRIBED WHAT HE HAD DONE. AFTER CONFIRMATION, DISNEYLAND WAS RE-OPENED AT AROUND 10:30 AM.

LAKE CO. BOS DENY RIVEROS REQUEST OF OUTSIDE COUNCIL JKB 3/7/12

  • THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAVE DENIED A REQUEST FOR OUTSIDE LEGAL COUNCIL FROM SHERIFF FRANK RIVERO REGARDING AN INVESTIGATION BY THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE.

THE INVESTIGATION STEMS FOR A SHOOTING IN 2008 THAT RIVERO WAS INVOLVED IN WHEN HE WAS A SHERIFFS DEPUTY. THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT CLEARED HIM OF ANY CRIMINAL CHARGES AFTER AN INVESTIGATION. LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY DON ANDERSON IS STILL INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT, BUT SAYS IT IS NOT A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. RIVERO REQUESTED LEGAL REPRESENTATION AS PROVIDED BY A CALIFORNIA GOVERNMENT CODE WHENEVER THERE COULD BE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST IN THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE OUR THE COUNTY COUNSEL TO REPRESENT HIM. COUNTY COUNSEL OFFERED TO SET UP AN ETHICAL WALL WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT TO REPRESENT HIM, BUT RIVERO REFUSED TO WAIVE THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST CLAUSE AND ASKED SUPERVISORS TO FUND PRIVATE COUNCIL. THEY DENIED THAT REQUEST ON A 4 TO 1 VOTE YESTERDAY. RIVERO SAYS HE WILL SEEK A HIGHER COURTS INTERVENTION.

  • THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING TONIGHT TO GATHER PUBLIC COMMENTS ON A DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT REGARDING THE PROPOSED CITYWIDE BAN ON PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS.

THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE WOULD FAN THE USE OF DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BAGS BY BUSINESSES AND WOULD REQUIRE THEM TO CHARGE AT LEAST 10 CENTS TO CUSTOMERS FOR A LARGE PAPER BAG. PUBLIC COMMENT FOLLOWING TONIGHTS HEARING WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL MONDAY. CITY STAFF WILL THEN BRING THE FINAL EIR BEFORE THE COUNCIL AT THEIR APRIL 18TH MEETING.
