FATAL HOUSE FIRE JKB 4/2/12

  • A LUCERNE MAN WAS KILLED WHEN HIS HOME CAUGHT FIRE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.

MULTIPLE 911 CALLS REPORTED THE FIRE SHORTLY AFTER 6 AM AT A MOBILE HOME IN THE LORRAINE VILLAGE MOBILE HOME PARK ON HIGHWAY 20. THE STRUCTURE WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND WAS THREATENING THREE OTHER MOBILE HOMES BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. THEY WERE ABLE TO KEEP THE BLAZE CONTAINED TO THE SINGLE HOME. A NEIGHBOR WHO TRIED TO RESCUE THE MAN INSIDE WAS TREATED FOR SMOKE INHALATION. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT ACCORDING TO A PRELIMINARY FINDING, THE CAUSE WAS ELECTRICAL IN NATURE. THE VICTIMS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED PENDING NOTIFICATION OF RELATIVES.

MARIJUANA RELATED ROBBERY IN BROOKTRAILS JKB 4/2/12

  • A EUREKA MAN WAS ARRESTED AND TWO OTHER SUSPECTS ARE BEING SOUGHT IN THE MARIJUANA RELATED ROBBERY OF A BROOKTRIALS HOME IN WILLITS SUNDAY.

DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO THE HOME ON PONDEROSA ROAD AFTER A 911 CALL WENT DEAD WHILE THE VICTIM WAS ON THE PHONE WITH DISPATCHERS. ACCORDING TO POLICE, TWO MEN AND A WOMAN CAME TO THE HOME IN SEPARATE VEHICLES, KICKED OFF THE ELECTRICAL METER, AND ENTERED A GROWING AREA IN THE HOME. THEY TOOK MORE THAN 100 MARIJUANA CLONES, AND GROW LIGHTS BEFORE FLEEING. 24 YEAR OLD SCOTT DAELLENBACK WAS ARRESTED WHILE LEAVING THE AREA. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON CHARGES OF ROBBERY AND INTIMIDATING A WITNESS. THE SEARCH FOR THE OTHER SUSPECTS IS CONTINUING.

E-QUAKES IN LAKE COUNTY JKB 4/2/12

  • LAKE COUNTY WAS SHAKEN BY A PAIR OF MODERATE SIZED EARTHQUAKES OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE FIRST REGISTERED 3.5 IN MAGNITUDE AND OCCURRED AT THE GEYSERS A MILE NORTH EAST OF THE STEAM FIELDS AT 6:28 PM SATURDAY. IT WAS THE 10TH QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE GEYSERS AREA SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR. THE SECOND QUAKE MEASURED 3.2 IN MAGNITUDE AND WAS CENTERED 3 MILES WEST OF CLEARLAKE . IT STRUCK AT 11:17 PM. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR INJURIES FROM EITHER QUAKE.

RESCUE OF INJURED SAILORS DELAYED JKB 4/2/12

  • THE U.S. COAST GUARD ON SUNDAY, HAD TO DELAY THEIR RESCUE OF THREE SAILORS INJURED IN A STORM THAT ARE ON A YACHT 400 MILES OFF THE CALIFORNIA COAST.

THE SAILORS WERE ON BOARD 70 FOOT GERALDTON WESTERN AUSTRALIA THAT IS COMPETING IN THE CLIPPER 11-12 ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE. THEY WERE INJURED WHEN THE VESSEL WAS HIT BY A LARGE WAVE SATURDAY, KNOCKING OUT THE PRIMARY STEERING MOUNTING. THE COAST GUARD, USING A LONG RANGE HELICOPTER WAS ABLE TO DROP MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO THE STRICKEN CREW, BUT COULD NOT DROP A PARAJUMPER RESCUE TEAM BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER. THE YACHT IS PROCEEDING UNDER SECONDARY STEERING TOWARD SAN FRANCISCO BAY.

LEIPHEIMER HIT BY CAR IN SPAIN JKB 4/2/12

  • WORLD RENOWNED SONOMA COUNTY PROFESSIONAL BICYCLE RACER LEVI LEIPHEIMER WAS HIT BY A CAR WHILE ON A SOLO TRAINING RIDE IN SPAIN OVER THE WEEKEND.

LEIPHEIER SUFFERED A CONTUSION ON HIS LOWER LEFT LEG AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. THE ACCIDENT CAUSED HIM TO DROP OUT OF THE SIX DAY VUELTA CICLISTA AL PARIS VASCO RACE THAT BEGAN MONDAY. HE WAS INVOLVED IN THREE SEPARATE CRASHES DURING ONE STAGE OF THE PARIS NICE ROAD RACE LAST MONTH THAT ALSO CAUSED HIM TO DROP OUT OF THAT RACE.

CONTAMINATED SOIL REMOVAL JKB 4/2/12

  • THE REMOVAL OF 2500 YARDS OF CONTAMINATED SOIL AT THE UKIAH SPEEDWAY AT THE REDWOOD EMPIRE FAIRGROUND IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN TODAY.

THE WORK WILL BE A COMBINED EFFORT BETWEEN THE MENDOCINO TRANSIT AUTHORITY, WHERE THE SOIL CAME FROM, AND A GRADING CONTRACTOR OUT OF SANTA ROSA. ABOUT 30 TRUCKS A DAY WILL BE RUNNING TO REMOVE THE DIRT TO AREA LANDFILLS, WHICH HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE ONLY CONTAMINATED, BUT NOT HAZARDOUS. ALL RACING HAS BEEN SUSPENDED UNTIL THE CONTAMINATED SOIL IS REMOVED.

SUTTER LAKESIDE LOOKING AT LAYOFFS JKB 4/2/12

  • SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL IN LAKEPORT IS LOOKING TO REDUCE ITS STAFF OF 300 BY 10% BEGINNING IMMEDIATELY.

REDUCED REVENUES DUE TO HIGHER NUMBERS OF UNINSURED PATIENTS AND FEWER ADMISSIONS IS THE CAUSE FOR THE PLANNED LAYOFFS. ACCORDING TO HOSPITAL OFFICIALS, THE MEDICAL CENTER HAS TAKEN NUMEROUS STEPS IN RECENT YEARS TO REDUCE OPERATING EXPENSES, INCREASE EFFICIENCIES AND CUT WASTE IN ORDER TO AVOID LAYOFFS. REVENUE AT THE HOSPITAL HAS DROPPED FROM AN AVERAGE OF $5.5 MILLION A MONTH IN 2007 TO $4.8 MILLION DOLLARS A MONTH IN THE FIRST TWO MONTHS OF 2012. MEANWHILE EXPENSES HAVE CONTINUED TO GROW. STAFF ARE EXPECTED TO BE NOTIFIED AS TO WHO IS GETTING LAID OFF IN THE COMING WEEKS.
