MAN IN WHEELCHAIR DROWNS AT MARINA JKB 5/24/12

  • AN EMERYVILLE MAN IN A WHEELCHAIR DROWNED AFTER FALLING INTO THE WATER AT THE EMERYVILLE MARINA TUESDAY EVENING.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, 62 YEAR OLD WILLIAM FERRIS WAS STRUGGLING WITH HIS WHEELCHAIR JUST PRIOR TO DISAPPEARING IN THE WATER AT AROUND 6 PM. WITNESSES JUMPED INTO HELP AND WERE ABLE TO PULL HIM OUT OF THE WATER, BUT PARAMEDICS WERE UNABLE TO REVIVE HIM. HE DIED AFTER BEING TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL. THE INCIDENT IS BEING INVESTIGATED AS AN ACCIDENT.

POWER OUTAGE CAUSED BY SQUIRREL 0 JKB 5/24/12

  • A POWER OUTAGE NEAR LAKE MENDOCINO YESTERDAY MORNING WAS APPARENTLY CAUSED BY A WAYWARD SQUIRREL.

ACCORDING TO A PG&E SPOKESPERSON, THE ANIMAL GOT CAUGHT UP ON SOME POWER LINES AND CAUSED TWO WIRES TO ARC AND COME DOWN NEAR MARINA DRIVE AT AROUND 9 AM. ABOUT 530 PG&E CUSTOMERS LOST POWER. IT WAS RESTORED TO ALL BUT 55 CUSTOMERS WITHIN TWO HOURS. THE REMAINING CUSTOMERS HAD THEIR ELECTRICITY BY LAST NIGHT.

DRUG BUST JKB 5/24/12

  • A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP IN UKIAH LED TO THE ARREST OF A WILLITS WOMAN AND THE DISCOVERY OF A MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION IN HER HOME TUESDAY.

48 YEAR OLD JACKI LYN SCOTT WAS FOUND TO BE DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE. A SEARCH OF HER CAR AND PERSON TURNED UP A SMALL AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE IN HER WALLET, TWO OUNCES OF COCAINE, AND TWO OUNCES OF METHAMPHETAMINE IN HER CAR. THAT LED TO A SEARCH OF HER HOME IN WILLITS WHERE POLICE FOUND 103 GROWING MARIJUANA PLANTS, ADDITIONAL COCAINE, SCALES, PACKAGING MATERIAL AND OTHER EVIDENCE OF DRUG SALES. SHE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES.

POSSIBLE MURDER CHARGE IN ACCIDENT JKB 5/24/12

  • HUMBOLDT COUNTY PROSECUTORS SAY IT IS POSSIBLE THEY COULD CHARGE A FORMER SHERIFFS DEPUTY WITH MURDER IN THE DEATH OF FORMER EUREKA WOMAN WHO DIED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT IN FEBRUARY.

30 YEAR OLD CARA BANDUCCI WAS A PASSENGER ON THE BACK OF 41 YEAR OLD MICHAEL CAMPBELLS MOTORCYCLE WHEN IT CRASHED ON WATERFRONT DRIVE FEBRUARY 29TH. BANDUCCI SUFFERED FATAL INJURIES AND DIED AFTER BEING AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE AREA. CAMPBELL WAS FOUND TO BE DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED. FORENSIC ACCIDENT EXPERTS ARE TRYING TO DETERMINE THE SPEED AT WHICH CAMPBELL WAS DRIVING AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. ACCORDING TO THE PROSECUTORS OFFICE, HE COULD BE CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER, GROSS VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER OR SECOND DEGREE MURDER DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME OF THE INVESTIGATION.

NEW JUDGE APPOINTMENTS JKB 5/24/12

  • TWO NEW MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGES WERE APPOINTED BY GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN ON FRIDAY.

CURRENT COUNTY COUNSEL JEANINE NADEL WILL FILL THE JUDICIAL VACANCY LEFT BY RETIRING JUDGE RON BROWN, WHO STEPPED DOWN FOR MEDICAL REASONS IN JANUARY OF LAST YEAR. PRIVATE ATTORNEY DAVID RIEMENSCHNEIDER WILL FILL THE JUDICIAL OPENING CREATED WHEN JUDGE JOHNATHAN LEHAN RETIRED IN MARCH OF 2011. WHEN THE TWO NEW JUDGES WILL TAKE OFFICE DEPENDS ON HOW SOON THEY CAN LEAVE THEIR CURRENT POSITIONS.

SHERIFF DEPARTMENT TO RECEIVE CLOSE TO $700,000 FOR RESERVE FUND JKB 5/24/12

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS APPROVED CLOSE TO $700,000 FOR RESERVE FUND FOR THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

THE MONEY FOR THE RESERVE FUND COMES FROM A RE-IMBURSEMENT PROGRAM DISTRICT ATTORNEY DAVID EYSTER SET UP THAT REQUIRES DEFENDANTS TO PAY RESTITUTION TO COVER THE COST OF THE INVESTIGATION AND PROSECUTION OF THEIR CASE. MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN ORIGINALLY ASKED TO USE $683,759 DOLLARS OF WHAT WAS CONSIDERED UNANTICIPATED REVENUE FROM THE RE-IMBURSEMENT PROGRAM FOR A SPECIFIC LIST OF DEPARTMENT NEEDS, BUT CHANGED THAT REQUEST TO ASK FOR THE CREATION OF A FUND THAT COULD BE ADDED TO BEFORE THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR. THAT REQUEST WAS UNANIMOUSLY GRANTED BY THE SUPERVISORS ON TUESDAY.

SUPERVISORS SUPPORT IHSS JKB 5/24/11

  • THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO SUPPORT LOCAL IN HOME SUPPORTIVE SERVICES WORKERS BY WRITING LETTERS TO BACK LEGISLATION AIMED AT LONG TERM FUNDING THE PROGRAM.

THE LETTER ALSO OPPOSES A CUT TO THE HOURS FOR WHICH CLIENTS WHO NEED IN HOME CARE WOULD QUALIFY. IN A MAY REVISION OF THE STATE BUDGET, GOVERNOR BROWN INCLUDED A $335.9 MILLION DOLLAR CUT TO IHSS. THE UNION THAT REPRESENTS IHSS WORKERS IS AKSING STATE LEGISLATORS TO FIND STABLE FUDNING FOR THE IHSS SYSTEM TO INSULATE IT FROM ADDITIONAL CUTS BY CATEGORIZING IT AS A HEALTH CARE PROGRAM, INSTEAD OF A WELFARE PROGRAM AS IT IS LABELED NOW.

INDIAN GAMING FUNDS AWARDED JKB 5/24/12

  • MENDOCINO COUNTY HAS BEEN AWARDED CLOSE TO $141,000 FROM THE INDIAN GAMING SPECIAL DISTRIBUTION FUND THAT WAS CONTRIBUTED BY THE HOPLAND BAND OF POMO INDIANS.

THE MONEY WILL BE DIVIDED AMONG THIS YEARS RECIPIENTS, WHICH INCLUDE THE HOPLAND FIRE DISTRICT, HOPLAND PUBLIC UTILITIES DISTRICT, LITTLE LAKE AND LONG VALLEY FIRE DISTRICTS, THE MENDOCINO COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS VICTIM WITNESS PROGRAM AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE.

STREET CLOSURE JKB 5/24/12

  • WEST MILL STREET FROM SOUTH STATE STREET TO SOUTH SCHOOL STREET IN UKIAH WILL BE CLOSED TODAY FOR REPAIR WORK.

DURING THE WORK HOURS FROM 7 AM TO 1 PM, MOTORISTS, BICYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE.
