VEHICLE THEFT JH 06/29/12

THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING A SERIES OF VEHICLE THEFTS OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, AND IS ASKING FOR THE COMMUNITYS HELP IN LOCATING THE SUSPECT.

THREE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN STOLEN, ALL WITH SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES, THE KEYS LEFT IN THE VEHICLE AND THE OWNERS NEARBY. THE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECOVERED A SHORT DISTANCE FROM WHERE THEY WERE STOLEN AND PERSONAL ITEMS HAVE BEEN TAKEN. THE SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE OR POSSIBLY LIGHT SKINNED HISPANIC MALE WITH BROWN HAIR, APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET EIGHT INCHES TALL TO 6 FEET TALL, AND APPROXIMATELY 140 TO 150 POUNDS. HE WAS LAST SEEN WEARING DENIM KNEE LENGTH SHORTS, A BLACK T-SHIRT, AND DARK BLUE OR BLACK HAT THAT IS SIMILAR TO A LOS ANGELES DODGERS LA HAT; AND WAS LAST SEEN IN THE AREA OF LADDEL AVENUE AND WEST 40TH AVENUE. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THIS CASE IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 994-8251.

DRUNK IN PUBLIC JH 06/29/12

A MAN WAS THROWING AROUND AND KNOCKING OVER SHOPPING CARTS INSIDE HARVEST MARKET IN FORT BRAGG.

55 YEAR OLD PATRICK HEPPE HAD ALREADY LEFT THE STORE AND WAS OBVIOUSLY INTOXICATED WHEN POLICE ARRIVED ON THE SCENE LATE TUESDAY EVENING. HEPPE WAS QUICKLY LOCATED ACROSS THE STORES PARKING LOT, AND HAD TO BE PHYSICALLY SUBDUED, ACCORDING TO POLICE. IT WAS THEN DISCOVERED THAT HEPPE HAD A LOCAL WARRANT FOR VIOLATION OF PROBATION AND A STATE OF CALIFORNIA PAROLE HOLD. HE WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

OUTSTANDING WARRANT JH 06/29/12

FORT BRAGG POLICE OBSERVED A PASSENGER IN A VEHICLE WITH AN OPEN CONTAINER IN THE PARKING AREA AT GLASS BEACH.

THE VEHICLE THEN LEFT AND POLICE PULLED IT OVER AS IT WAS WEAVING NORTHBOUND ON MAIN STREET. OFFICERS FOUND THAT THE PASSENGER DRINKING HAD FOUR OUTSTANDING WARRANTS. 39 YEAR OLD DENNIS LARRY MOFFETT WAS THEN SEARCHED. ACCORDING TO POLICE, THEY FOUND METHAMPHETAMINE, HYPODERMIC SYRINGES, AND OTHER PARAPHERNALIA. MOFFETT WAS BOOKED AND TRANSPORTED TO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

SHERIFF VS BOARD OF SUPERVISORS JH 06/29/12

`ATTORNEYS REPRESENTING THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND THE SHERIFF ARE DUE TO FACE OFF IN COURT.

SHERIFF FRANK RIVERO FILED A PETITION IN LATE MARCH, ASKING THE COURT TO ORDER THE BOARD TO PROVIDE PRIVATE LEGAL COUNCIL DURING A REPORTED DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE INVESTIGATION AND TO PAY THE ATTORNEY FEES FOR THE CASE. THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS DENIED RIVEROS REQUEST. THE INCIDENT AT THE CENTER OF THE DAS INVESTIGATION WAS AN ON-DUTY SHOOTING INVOLVING RIVERO WHEN HE WAS A DEPUTY IN FEBRUARY 2008. RIVERO IS ACCUSED OF LYING ABOUT THE FACTS OF THE CASE. A COURT HEARING IS SET FOR JULY 20 AT THE LAKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE.

GRAPE GROWERS ARGUE OVER FROST PROTECTION LAWSUIT JH 06/29/12

SONOMA AND MENDOCINO COUNTY GRAPE GROWERS AND OTHER FARMERS PACKED A MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT ROOM YESTERDAY.

THEY SHOWED UP MOSTLY IN SUPPORT OF A LAWSUIT CHALLENGING STATE FROST PROTECTION RULES FOR STRETCHES OF THE RUSSIAN RIVER WATERSHED. REGULATORS SAY THE RULES ARE NECESSARY TO PROTECT SALMON AND STEELHEAD. FARMERS AND THEIR ATTORNEYS SAY THE REGULATIONS ARE UNNEEDED; TAKE AWAY FARMERS WATER RIGHTS AND EXCEED STATE WATER RESOURCE CONTROL BOARDS AUTHORITY.

NEAR $1 BILLION ALLOCATED TO IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION JH 06/29/12

THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY, IT HAS ALLOCATED NEARLY $1 BILLION TO 135 TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS STATEWIDE.

APPROXIMATELY $600 MILLION IN FUNDING WAS PROVIDED BY PROPOSITION 1B, A TRANSPORTATION BOND APPROVED BY VOTERS IN 2006. THE REMAINING ALLOCATIONS CAME FROM ASSORTED STATE AND FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION ACCOUNTS. IN MENDOCINO COUNTY, $3.3 MILLION WAS ALLOCATED TO CLEAN AND PAINT THE STEEL STRUCTURES OF THE SALMON CREEK AND ALBION RIVER BRIDGES ON ROUTE 1. ANOTHER $600,000 IS TO IMPROVE THE PACIFIC COAST BIKE ROUTE ALONG ROUTE 1 BY WIDENING SHOULDERS AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS FROM POINT ARENA TO MANCHESTER.

BURN BAN IN EFFECT JH 06/29/12

CAL FIRE MENDOCINO ANNOUNCED THAT AS OF MONDAY JULY 2ND, A BURN BAN WILL BE IN EFFECT.

ALL RESIDENTIAL AND OPEN OUTDOOR BURNING IN THE COUNTY IS SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. STATE CAMPFIRE PERMITS ARE REQUIRED IN THE WILDERNESS AREAS, AND CAMPFIRES ON ORGANIZED CAMPGROUNDS OR ON PRIVATE PROPERTY ARE ALLOWED AS LONG AS THE FIRE IS CONTAINED SO IT DOESNT SPREAD.

FIREWORKS RESTRICTIONS JH 06/29/12

THE USE OF FIREWORKS IN MENDOCINO COUNTY IS ILLEGAL, AND LAKE COUNTY HAS SPECIFIC GUIDELINES FOR LIMITED USE.

LAKE COUNTY ALLOWS THE USE OF CALIFORNIA APPROVED SAFE AND SANE FIREWORKS. THEY MAY BE USED ON ANY PUBLIC STREET WITHIN THE INCORPORATED AREA OF LAKEPORT, WHICH DOES NOT VIOLATE ANY CITY ORDINANCE. THE DAYS AND HOURS FOR LEGAL USE OF THE SAFE AND SANE FIREWORKS ARE JULY 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD FROM 9 TO 10 PM, AND JULY 4TH FROM 9 TO 11 PM ONLY. ANY USE OUTSIDE OF THESE DAYS, TIMES, AND LOCATIONS IS ILLEGAL IN LAKE COUNTY.

IN MENDOCINO COUNTY, THE POSSESSION, TRANSPORTING OR USE OF ANY FIREWORKS OF ANY KIND IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED BY LAW.

4TH OF JULY CELEBRATIONS AND FIREWORKS JH 06/29/12

WITH THE 4TH OF JULY ON A WEDNESDAY THIS YEAR, WE GET A FULL WEEK OF CELEBRATION.

TOMORROW, JUNE 30: THE REDBUD PARADE STARTS AT 11 AM AT THE REDBUD PARK IN CLEARLAKE. ALSO, A FESTIVAL AT AUSTIN PARK INCLUDES A CAR SHOW AND FAMILY FAIR, THE INTERNATIONAL WORM RACES AND A FIREWORKS DISPLAY AT DUSK.

SUNDAY JULY 1ST: IN UKIAH, THE ALL AMERICAN PICNIC IN THE PARK FEATURING LOTS OF FUN FAMILY EVENTS, WILL BE FROM NOON TO 5PM AT TODD GROVE PARK, FOLLOWED BY THE SECOND FREE CONCERT IN THE PARK

ON JULY 4TH: LAKEPORT WILL HAVE ITS ANNUAL CELEBRATION AT LIBRARY PARK WITH FIREWORKS LAUNCHED AT DUSK. THERE WILL BE A BOAT PARADE AS WELL AS A FIREWORKS DISPLAY IN CLEARLAKE OAKS AT THE BOAT LAUNCH AREA.

ON JULY 7TH: THE 41ST WORLDS LARGEST SALMON BAR-B-QUE WILL BE HELD IN NOYO HARBOR FOLLOWED BY FIREWORKS AT DUSK.

MORE FIREWORKS ON THE COAST AT ARENA COVE IN POINT ARENA. AND A FIREWORKS DISPLAY WILL ALSO FOLLOW NCRA RACES AT LAKEPORT SPEEDWAY AT THE LAKE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS.
