THE NORTH PASS FIRE THAT, STARTED NEARLY TWO WEEKS AGO BY LIGHTNING STRIKE JUST 10 MILES OUTSIDE OF COVELO, CONTINUES TO RAGE, BUT FIREFIGHTERS ARE MAKING PROGRESS.

THE BLAZE HAS CONSUMED MORE THAN 34, 000 ACRES AS OF LAST NIGHT, AND IS 37% CONTAINED. OVER TWO THOUSAND FIREFIGHTERS ARE PUTTING OUT HOT SPOTS AND STRENGTHENING CONTROL LINES IN THE RUGGED MOUNTAIN TERRAIN. THE FIRE HAS DESTROYED 11 STRUCTURES, AND DOZENS MORE ARE STILL THREATENED. FIVE INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED SO FAR.

MAN SHOOTS AT UTILITY WORKERS JH 08/31/12

A LAKE COUNTY MAN SHOT AT UTILITY WORKERS INSTALLING EQUIPMENT AT HIS HOME.

TWO MEN WORKING FOR NORTH COAST ENERGY SERVICES HAD CALLED 64 YEAR OLD DENNIS LEROY CATO ON TUESDAY TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR WEDNESDAY TO INSTALL ENERGY EFFICIENT UTILITIES AT HIS HOME. THEY ARRIVED AT THE SCHEDULED TIME AND BEGAN WORK. JUST AS THEY WERE FINISHING UP, CATO EMERGED FROM THE HOME, APPEARING TO BE INTOXICATED, AND TOLD THE MEN HE WAS GOING TO SHOOT THEM. THEY BEGAN PACKING UP TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. BEFORE THEY COULD FINISH, CATO CAME BACK OUTSIDE WITH A HANDGUN AND OPENED FIRE HITTING THEIR TRUCK AT LEAST TWICE. THE TWO WORKERS RAN AND TOOK REFUGE AT A NEARBY RESIDENCE WHILE CONTACTING THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT. DEPUTIES DETAINED CATO WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE WAS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SEVERAL OTHER CHARGES.

POPEYE THE MUSSEL SNIFFING DOG JH 08/31/12

YESTERDAYS MEMORIAL WAS ORGANIZED IN PART BY A GROUP CALLED WALK AND BIKE MENDOCINO. PEOPLE STOOD ON ALL FOUR CORNERS OF THE INTERSECTION, MANY HOLDING SIGNS THE SIMPLY SAID REMEMBER DOUG. MUCH OF THOSE IN ATTENDANCE RODE BICYCLES AND WALKED TO THE EVENT. SEVERAL ADDED FLOWERS TO THE GROWING COLLECTION NEAR A WHITE BICYCLE FRAME CHAINED TO A TREE AT THE CORNER, JUST FEET FROM WHERE ROSOFF DIED.

34 YEAR OLD IVAN OLIVER WAS CONVICTED TWO WEEKS AGO OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER FOR STABBING MICHAEL DODELE 65 TIMES AT A LAKEPORT MOBILE HOME PARK. OLIVER WAS SENTENCED TO 32 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON.

THE CASE AGAINST A NICE MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING A WOMAN DURING A ROBBERY ATTEMPT IN LUCERNE LAST YEAR IS SET FOR A PRELIMINARY HEARING.

51 YEAR OLD DANIEL RAY LOYD FACES MURDER AND FIVE OTHER FELONY CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY SHOOTING 48 YEAR OLD CINDY YVETTE QUIETT LAST SEPTEMBER. THE PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 15 AT THE LAKE COUNTY COURT HOUSE.

80 POT PLANTS SEIZED FROM UKIAH HOME JH 08/30/12

A SEARCH WARRANT LED TO TWO ARRESTS AND SEIZURE OF MARIJUANA PLANTS IN UKIAH.

UKIAH POLICE SERVED THE SEARCH WARRANT AT THE RESIDENCE OF 39 YEAR OLD JESUS MARTINEZ, IN THE 600 BLOCK OF WALNUT AVENUE MONDAY MORNING. ACCORDING TO POLICE, THEY FOUND MORE THAN 80 GROWING MARIJUANA PLANTS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, AS WELL AS ITEMS USED TO PACKAGE POT. MARTINEZ WAS ARRESTED WHILE DRIVING NEAR HIS RESIDENCE. 18 YEAR OLD ANGELA DELACRUZ, WHO WAS AT THE RESIDENCE WAS ALSO ARRESTED. BOTH WERE BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

WOMAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER HIGHWAY 101 CRASH JH 08/30/12

A EUREKA WOMAN REMAINED IN SERIOUS CONDITION YESTERDAY, JUST TWO DAYS AFTER SHE CAREENED OVER THE SIDE OF HIGHWAY 101 AND HIT TWO TREES.

76 YEAR OLD JEANETTE CAREY LOST CONTROL OF HER VEHICLE NEAR STEEL ROAD AS SHE TRAVELED NORTH, ON MONDAY. SHE WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, DRUGS AND ALCOHOL DID NOT APPEAR TO BE A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT.

CHARGES FILED IN TRIPLE-FATAL CRASH JH 08/30/12

THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE FILED A COMPLAINT AGAINST A HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE MAN, CHARGING HIM WITH FIVE MISDEMEANORS IN CONNECTION WITH A TRIPLE-FATAL CRASH IN JANUARY.

50 YEAR OLD MICHAEL JAMES WRIGHT LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE ON HIGHWAY 29, AND SKIDDED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC HITTING AN SUV. WRIGHT IS CHARGED WITH THREE COUNTS OF GROSS VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER FOR THE DEATHS OF HIS PASSENGERS. HE ALSO FACES TWO COUNTS OF RECKLESS DRIVING CAUSING SPECIFIC INJURY, RELATED TO THE PEOPLE IN THE VEHICLE HE HIT. THE DAS OFFICE SAID THE TWO SIDES ARE IN NEGOTIATIONS AND IF THE CASE DOES NOT RESOLVE, THE DA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO FILE FELONY CHARGES. WRIGHT IS SCHEDULED TO BE ARRAIGNED ON SEPTEMBER 11TH.

FIRE MANAGEMENT AND SHERIFFS OFFICE PERSONNEL WILL EVALUATE THE FIRE PATTERN AND CONDUCT ANOTHER RISK ASSESSMENT TODAY. THIS WOULD ALLOW LOCAL RESIDENTS, AFTER BEING VERIFIED AS OWNING PROPERTY OR RESIDING ON BLANDS COVE ROAD, INDIAN DICK ROAD, AND MENDOCINO PASS ROAD, ACCESS TO THEIR RESIDENCE AND PROPERTY. CAL FIRE HAS ADJUSTED THE ESTIMATED ACREAGE CONSUMED BY THE FIRE TO 32,675, WITH 35% CONTAINMENT AS OF LAST NIGHT. FOUR HOMES, SEVEN BUILDINGS AND A FIRE ENGINE WERE DESTROYED, WITH ABOUT 74 HOMES, 77 OUTBUILDINGS AND FIVE COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES STILL THREATENED. THREE INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. POINT ARENA BANK ROBBERS ARRAIGNED JH 08/29/12

SUSPECTS IN THE POINT ARENA BANK ROBBERY WERE ARRAIGNED MONDAY.

FREDRICK JOSEPH ORLANDOS BAIL WAS SET AT $1.125 MILLION DOLLARS, AND RAYMON JESUS OJEDAS BAIL WAS SET AT $100,000 DOLLARS. ORLANDOS BAIL IS SO MUCH HIGHER BECAUSE HE NOT ONLY USED A FIREARM DURING THE ROBBERY, BUT HE HAS A HISTORY WITH AT LEAST THREE OTHER BANK ROBBERIES AND A PRIOR RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY. ORLANDO FACES UP TO 45 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON IF CONVICTED, AND OJEDA FACES 6 YEARS. THE PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR SEPTEMBER 7.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED IN CRASH ON HIGHWAY 101 JH 08/29/12

A MOTORCYCLIST SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES FOLLOWING A COLLISION ON THE GREEN BRIDGE ON HIGHWAY 101 SOUTH OF HOPLAND ON MONDAY.

ACCORDING TO CHP, A MOTOR HOME, DRIVEN BY 45 YEAR OLD DAVID ADDINGTON OF SAN FRANCISCO, LOST A CARGO DOOR WHILE CROSSING THE BRIDGE. A TRUCK, DRIVEN BY 27 YEAR OLD WESLEY GARSIDE OF ESCALON HIT THE DOOR, WHICH CAUSED THE TRUCKS FUEL TANK TO LEAK, UNBEKNOWNST TO GARSIDE. BOTH DRIVERS PULLED OVER, AND GARSIDE LET ADDINGTON INTO THE TRUCK TO GO RETRIEVE THE DOOR. AS THE TRUCK SLOWED DOWN ON THE BRIDGE TO REMOVE THE DOOR FROM THE ROADWAY, 45 YEAR OLD ROBERT HERNANDEZ, DRIVING A VAN, SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 20 MPH WHEN HE SAW THE LEAKING FUEL TANK ON THE TRUCK AHEAD OF HIM. MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES PULLED OVER 72 YEAR OLD JOHN CULLEN IN A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP. THE DEPUTY NOTICED THE ODOR OF MARIJUANA AND SEARCHED THE VEHICLE, REVEALING APPROXIMATELY 27 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, 5 GRAMS OF POT, SCALES AND OTHER ITEMS USED IN PACKAGING METH FOR SALE. CULLEN WAS ALSO FOUND TO BE DRIVING WITHOUT A VALID LICENSE. HE WAS ARRESTED AND TRANSPORTED TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

THE THIRD PERSON WHO DIED IN A CRASH ON HIGHWAY 101 LAST THURSDAY, HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

THE VICTIM WAS 29 YEAR OLD JOSE GUADALUPE SOLORIO-LEON OF UKIAH. THE CRASH ALSO KILLED THE VEHICLES DRIVER, 35 YEAR OLD MIREYA AYALA OF UKIAH, AND HER 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER KAREN AYALA. HER OTHER DAUGHTER, 4 YEAR OLD JASMIN AYALA, WAS INJURED. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED, WHEN AYALA, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS CROSSED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC SOUTH OF HOPLAND, AND WAS BROADSIDED BY AN SUV. THE THREE PEOPLE IN THE SUV RECEIVED MODERATE INJURIES.

SHOOTING SUSPECT LINKED TO HOME INVASION JH 08/29/12

A CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATION INTO AN ALLEGED HOME INVASION ROBBERY LAST WEEK HAS LINKED THE CRIME TO A MIDDLETOWN MAN ARRESTED OVER THE WEEKEND FOR A SHOOTING.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, 33 YEAR OLD JOHN CHESTER COOK WAS IDENTIFIED BY A WITNESS, AS A SUSPECT IN THE HOME INVASION, JUST TWO DAYS BEFORE COOK ALLEGEDLY SHOT A KELSEYVILLE MAN IN THE STOMACH DURING AN ATTEMPTED ROBBERY. POLICE ALSO ARRESTED 23 YEAR OLD JOHN WILLIAM BROTT OF CLEARLAKE FOR HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE ROBBERY. WHEN QUESTIONED, THE DRIVER, 37 YEAR OLD ANTHONY PURDY OF CHICO SAID HE HAD A LEGAL RIGHT TO POSSES THE POT, BUT COULDNT PROVIDE ANY PROOF. HE VOLUNTARILY HANDED OVER 3 GRAMS OF POT TO THE DEPUTY. THE VICTIM WAS NEAR WILDCAT ROAD WHEN HE GOT A RIDE FROM THREE MEN. THEY DROVE HIM TO AN AREA ON DIAMOND DUST ROAD, WHERE ONE OF THEM DEMANDED THE VICTIMS MARIJUANA AND OTHER POSSESSIONS. A STRUGGLE ENSUED OUT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, DURING WHICH ONE MAN PULLED A HANDGUN AND SHOT THE HITCHHIKER IN THE ABDOMEN. HE WAS ABLE TO GET TO HIS RESIDENCE AND CONTACT HIS ROOMMATE, WHO DROVE HIM TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL. CHP OFFICIALS RELEASED THE NAMES OF TWO OF THE PEOPLE FOUND DEAD LAST WEEK IN A CRASHED SUV NEAR LEGGETT.

THE VICTIMS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 55 YEAR OLD CINDY ANN LANE OF LAYTONVILLE, AND 38 YEAR OLD PHILLIP RANDALL MANUS OF LEGGETT. THE THIRD VICTIM WILL REQUIRE DNA TESTING TO POSITIVELY IDENTIFY HIM. THE DUMP TRUCK THAT HIT AND KILLED DR DOUG ROSOFF FRIDAY MORNING HAS BEEN IMPOUNDED, BUT INVESTIGATORS HAVE YET TO DETERMINE WHO WAS AT FAULT IN THE ACCIDENT.

TWO SUSPECTS ARE IN CUSTODY FOR ROBBING THE REDWOOD CREDIT UNION IN POINT ARENA.

THE SUSPECTS, ONE ARMED WITH A REVOLVER, FLED WITH APPROXIMATELY $50,000 DOLLARS, AFTER DEMANDING THE EMPLOYEES EMPTY THEIR CASH DRAWERS, THURSDAY AFTERNOON. WITNESSES WERE ABLE TO NOTE THE LICENSE PLATE NUMBER ON THE JEEP THE SUSPECTS FLED IN. A CHP OFFICER THEN OBSERVED THE JEEP ON FISH ROCK ROAD WHERE IT STOPPED MOMENTARILY, AND ONE SUSPECT, 39 YEAR OLD RAYMOND OJEDA GOT OUT, BEFORE THE VEHICLE CONTINUED ON. OJEDA WAS QUICKLY ARRESTED. SHERIFFS DEPUTIES THEN PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER A SHORT TIME LATER. AFTER A SHORT STAND OFF WITH THE OTHER SUSPECT, 55 YEAR OLD FRED ORLANDO, HE WAS DETAINED AND ARRESTED. A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE REVEALED THE GUN AND STOLEN CASH. BOTH OJEDA AND ORLANDO WERE BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

AUTHORITIES HAVE IDENTIFIED TWO OF THE THREE PEOPLE WHO DIED IN A CRASH ON HIGHWAY 101 SOUTH OF HOPLAND.

THE DECEASED DRIVER WHO LOST CONTROL OF HER HONDA, CROSSED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND WAS BROADSIDED BY AN ONCOMING VEHICLE, WAS IDENTIFIED AS 35 YEAR OLD MIREYA AYALA OF UKIAH. SHE HAD THREE PASSENGERS, TWO OF WHOM DIED, INCLUDING HER ONE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, KAREN AYALA. ALSO IN THE HONDA WAS AN UNIDENTIFIED MALE AND A 4 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. IN THE TAHOE THAT BROADSIDED THE HONDA WAS DRIVER, 35 YEAR OLD TENNILLE REYES OF CLOVERDALE, AND HER CHILDREN, 8 YEAR OLD JOHN REYES AND 5 YEAR OLD SILVIA REYES. THE MOTHER AND DAUGHTER WERE TAKEN TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER AND THE 8 YEAR OLD BOY WAS FLOWN TO OAKLAND CHILDRENS HOSPITAL, ALL WITH MODERATE INJURIES.

TWO SUBJECTS RAN FROM THE PROPERTY AND FIVE OTHERS WERE DETAINED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THOSE DETAINED ARE, RONALD WHITNEY, 25 YEAR OLD AARON ALEXANDER OF LANCASTER PENNSYLVANIA, 30 YEAR OLD AUSTIN ALEXANDER OF MAUI HAWAII, ALONG WITH 25 YEAR OLD AARON WHITNEY, AND 38 YEAR OLD ERNEST COSSE, BOTH OF MIDDLETOWN. THE SEARCH TURNED UP APPROXIMATELY 198 MARIJUANA PLANTS, 20 POUNDS OF PROCESSED POT, CONCENTRATED CANNABIS, 3 FIREARMS, AND JUST OVER $53,000 DOLLARS IN CASH. ALL FIVE SUSPECTS WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

A MAN STOLE AN SUV FROM THE FORT BRAGG CICLE K, THAT HAD A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL SLEEPING IN IT.

FORT BRAGG POLICE WERE RESPONDING TO THE CARJACKING OF THE GOLD SUV YESTERDAY MORNING WHEN OFFICERS SPOTTED THE STOLEN VEHICLE TRAVELING ON MAIN STREET AND GAVE PURSUIT, ENDING WITH IT CRASHING INTO A HEDGE. THE DRIVER, IDENTIFIED AS JESSE WAYNE BACON, ATTEMPTED TO FLEE BUT WAS APPREHENDED QUICKLY. ACCORDING TO POLICE, THE 14-YEAR OLD WAS NOT WITH HIM, AND IT WAS DETERMINED SHE HAD BEEN DROPPED OFF NEAR MCDONALD’S SOON AFTER BACON DISCOVERED SHE WAS IN THE VEHICLE.

50 YEAR OLD BRUCE KNOLES WAS RIDING HIS HARLEY-DAVIDSON EAST ON BUTTS CANYON ROAD WHEN HE VEERED OFF THE NORTH SHOULDER WHILE NEGOTIATING A CURVE. KNOLES WAS THROWN FROM THE BIKE AND COLLIDED WITH A MILEPOST MARKER AND A FENCE. HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, WHERE HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT. DRUGS AND ALCOHOL ARE NOT SUSPECTED IN THE ACCIDENT.

THAT CASE LED TO SEIZURE OF THREE POUNDS OF POT SHIPPED THROUGH THE US POSTAL SERVICE BY 48 YEAR OLD GEORGE KEVIN RHODES OF KELSEYVILLE. DEPUTIES SECURED A SEARCH WARRANT FOR RHODES AND LOCATED 38 MARIJUANA PLANTS, PROCESSED POT, DIGITAL SCALES, US MAIL PACKAGING MATERIALS AND $6,500 IN CASH. RHODES WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

3 PEOPLE DIED IN CAR CRASH ON HIGHWAY 101 JH 08/24/12

THREE PEOPLE, INCLUDING AN INFANT, DIED AND FOUR OTHERS WERE INJURED IN A CRASH ON HIGHWAY 101 YESTERDAY.

THE FOLLOWING DAY, SOMEONE LOOKING FOR THE GROUP FOUND THE RED CHEVY WITH EXTENSIVE COLLISION DAMAGE UNDER A TOPPLED TREE ABOUT 150 FEET DOWN AN EMBANKMENT ON HIGHWAY 101, JUST SOUTH OF CONFUSION HILL. ONLY THE DRIVER, 38 YEAR OLD PHILLIP MANUS OF LEGGETT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. AUTHORITIES ARE WORKING TO IDENTIFY THE OTHER TWO VICTIMS.

TWO PEOPLE FROM CHICO SUSPECTED OF INVOLVEMENT IN SEVERAL IDENTITY THEFT CASES WERE ARRESTED IN CLEARLAKE.

27 YEAR OLD ELIZABETH LEE HOLCRAFT AND 20 YEAR OLD KRISTOPHER THOMAS CASTRO ARE THE ACCUSED. THEY ALLEGEDLY MOVED FROM HOTEL TO HOTEL FROM RENO TO FORT BRAGG, STEALING MAIL, CASHING CHECKS FOUND IN THE MAIL, DEVELOPING CREDIT INFORMATION ON THE VICTIMS AND USING THE INFORMATION TO OBTAIN GOODS, SERVICES AND HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS. COUNTY SUPERVISOR INVOLVED IN CONFRONTATION JH 08/23/12

CLEARLAKE CITY POLICE RESPONDED TO A REPORTED DISTURBANCE THAT INVOLVED A LAKE COUNTY SUPERVISOR.

TUESDAY NIGHT, CLEARLAKE POLICE WENT TO BUCKEYE STREET AND CONTACTED 55 YEAR OLD ROBERT SANDERS AND 52 YEAR OLD ROB BROWN. BROWN STATED HE WENT TO THE RESIDENCE TO SERVE CIVIL PAPERWORK REGARDING THE PROPERTY. WHILE DOING SO, A CONFRONTATION BROKE OUT BETWEEN THE TWO MEN, WITH BOTH TELLING OFFICERS THEY WERE ASSAULTED BY THE OTHER. BROWN SAID SANDERS WAS UPSET AND ALLEGED SANDERS GRABBED HIS ARM AND SPUN HIM AROUND. BROWN SAID HE STRUCK SANDERS IN THE JAW IN SELF-DEFENSE. THE WILLITS CITY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY LAST NIGHT, TO AUTHORIZE APPROVAL OF PLANS AND ADVERTISING FOR BIDS ON THE WILLITS WATER TREATMENT PLANT UPGRADE.

THE PROJECT ENCOMPASSES A NEW UPFLOW CLARIFIER FOR MORE EFFICIENT DRINKING WATER CREATION AND IMPROVED CHEMICAL PRE-TREATMENT. THE CITY OF WILLITS HAS ANNOUNCED THAT CENTRAL AVENUE AT BARBARA LANE WILL BE CLOSED TODAY.

THE CITY WILL BE INSTALLING NEW STORM DRAIN PIPING AND A MANHOLE STRUCTURE. MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED THAT THERE WILL BE NO THROUGH TRAFFIC ON SOUTH STREET TO CENTRAL AVENUE DUE TO THIS CLOSURE.
