HALLOWEEN CITY GRANTED PERMIT JH 08/24/12

AFTER AN HOUR OF MOSTLY OPPOSITION AT A SECOND PUBLIC HEARING YESTERDAY, HALLOWEEN CITY WAS GRANTED A MINOR USE PERMIT IN UKIAH.

MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO EXPRESSED OPINION, DIDNT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HONEST COMPETITION, BUT DIDNT LIKE THE SITE HALLOWEEN CITY CHOSE BECAUSE ITS ON LAND ZONED FOR COMMERCIAL USE, NOT RETAIL, AMONG OTHER REASONS. THAT REASONING DOESNT MAKE SENSE, SINCE THE LOCATION IS THE OLD UKIAH VALLEY LUMBER STORE ON SOUTH STATE STREET. THE BUILDING IN QUESTION HAS BEEN USED FOR RETAIL SALES FOR DECADES, BEFORE THE LUMBER AND HARDWARE STORE CLOSED. THE MOST VOCAL IN OPPOSITION TO THE PERMIT WAS THE OWNER OF INCOGNITO, STATING THAT HALLOWEEN CITY WOULD HURT HER BUSINESS. OFFICIALS POINTED OUT THAT THE STORE OPERATED FOR THE SAME TWO MONTHS LAST YEAR, AND WHILE IT MAY HAVE REDUCED INCOME FOR THE LOCAL COMPETITOR, THE BUSINESS STAYED OPEN. HALLOWEEN CITY WILL BE OPEN FOR TWO MONTHS AND TEMPORARILY EMPLOY 23 PEOPLE.
