THE NORTH PASS FIRE CONTINUES TO BURN AS FIREFIGHTERS HAVE IT ABOUT ONE THIRD CONTAINED.

THE FIRE THAT WAS STARTED BY LIGHTNING ON AUGUST 18 HAS CONSUMED 31,656 ACRES AS OF LAST NIGHT, AND IS 34% CONTAINED. THE FIRE STILL THREATENS DOZENS OF RESIDENCES AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES, AND HAS DESTROYED AT LEAST ONE HOME SO FAR. A MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER REMAINS IN PLACE FOR THE AREA OF INDIAN DICK ROAD, MENDOCINO PASS ROAD, AND BLANDS COVE ROAD. HITCHHIKER GETS SHOT JH 08/28/12

A KELSEYVILLE MAN WAS SHOT WHILE HITCHHIKING ON HIGHWAY 175.

THE VICTIM WAS NEAR WILDCAT ROAD WHEN HE GOT A RIDE FROM THREE MEN. THEY DROVE HIM TO AN AREA ON DIAMOND DUST ROAD, WHERE ONE OF THEM DEMANDED THE VICTIMS MARIJUANA AND OTHER POSSESSIONS. A STRUGGLE ENSUED OUT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, DURING WHICH ONE MAN PULLED A HANDGUN AND SHOT THE HITCHHIKER IN THE ABDOMEN. HE WAS ABLE TO GET TO HIS RESIDENCE AND CONTACT HIS ROOMMATE, WHO DROVE HIM TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL. DURING THE COURSE OF THE INVESTIGATION DEPUTIES IDENTIFIED 33 YEAR OLD JOHN CHESTER COOK OF MIDDLETOWN AS THE SHOOTER. COOK WAS ARRESTED AND THE FIREARM BELIEVED TO BE USED WAS RECOVERED. COOK WAS BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

VICTIMS IN SUV CRASH IDENTIFIED JH 08/28/12

CHP OFFICIALS RELEASED THE NAMES OF TWO OF THE PEOPLE FOUND DEAD LAST WEEK IN A CRASHED SUV NEAR LEGGETT.

THE VICTIMS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 55 YEAR OLD CINDY ANN LANE OF LAYTONVILLE, AND 38 YEAR OLD PHILLIP RANDALL MANUS OF LEGGETT. THE THIRD VICTIM WILL REQUIRE DNA TESTING TO POSITIVELY IDENTIFY HIM. THE THREE WERE LAST SEEN AUGUST 4TH OR 5TH, WHEN THEY REPORTEDLY LEFT GARBERVILLE FOR LEGGETT. THEY NEVER ARRIVE, AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY REPORTED THEM MISSING AND LAUNCHED A SEARCH. THEY WERE FOUND AUGUST 21 IN A WRECKED SUV DOWN AN EMBANKMENT NEAR CONFUSION HILL.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG BUST JH 08/28/12

A TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT STOP TURNED INTO A DRUG BUST.

DEPUTIES PULLED OVER A VEHICLE FOR A CODE VIOLATION ON SIMPSON LANE IN FORT BRAGG, SUNDAY MORNING. DEPUTIES IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER APPEARED TO BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE. AN ON SITE EVALUATION RESULTED IN THE ARREST OF 22 YEAR OLD EVAN RUCZACK, AND 19 YEAR OLD BRITNEE HEMINGWAY. A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE REVEALED 4 BINDLES OF THE PSYCHEDELIC DRUG DMT. RUCZAK WAS ALSO FOUND TO BE DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE. BOTH RUCZAK AND HEMINGWAY WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

PICKUP CRASHES INTO POWER POLE JH 08/28/12

A PICKUP TRUCK CRASHED INTO A POWER POLE ON HIGHWAY 20 YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE CRASH OCCURRED ABOUT SIX MILES EAST OF FORT BRAGG, CAUSING A TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE DRIVER SUFFERED ONLY MINOR INJURIES.

UPD INVESTIGATES BICYCLE ACCIDENT JH 08/28/12

THE DUMP TRUCK THAT HIT AND KILLED DR DOUG ROSOFF FRIDAY MORNING HAS BEEN IMPOUNDED, BUT INVESTIGATORS HAVE YET TO DETERMINE WHO WAS AT FAULT IN THE ACCIDENT.

THE TRUCK WAS TURNING ONTO SOUTH ORCHARD AVENUE FROM GOBBI STREET, ON ITS WAY TO THE MCDONALDS DEMOLITION, WHEN IT COLLIDED WITH ROSOFF ON HIS BICYCLE. AUTHORITIES SAID THAT DRUGS AND ALCOHOL DID NOT APPEAR TO BE A FACTOR. THE INVESTIGATION WILL LIKELY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS TO COMPLETE. MULTIPLE WITNESSES HAVE BEEN INTERVIEWED, AND THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS REQUESTING THAT ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE SEEN THE INCIDENT OR HAS INFORMATION ABOUT IT CALL 463-6262.

LAKE COUNTY EMERGENCY DECLARATION JH 08/28/12

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OFFICIALLY DECLARED A COUNTYWIDE EMERGENCY LAST WEEK, IN RESPONSE TO THE WYE AND WALKER FIRES.

THE COUNTYS STATE SENATOR ASKED THE GOVERNOR FOR A SIMILAR DECLARATION ALTHOUGH THE COUNTY MAY NOT QUALIFY BASED ON FINAL DAMAGE ESTIMATES. HOWEVER, BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL BIG FIRES AROUND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA THAT HAVE DESTROYED DOZENS OF HOMES, GOVERNOR BROWN COULD MAKE A REGIONAL DECLARATION NAMING ELIGIBLE COUNTIES, THAT COULD INCLUDE LAKE. IF THE COUNTY HAS A WET WINTER AND SUFFERS EROSION AND SLIDES IN THE FIRE AREA, THAT COULD BE ADDED TO THE FIRE DAMAGE TOTALS, AND COULD ALSO QUALIFY THE COUNTY FOR STATE ASSISTANCE.

THE NORTH PASS FIRE BURNED ALMOST 4,000 ACRES SINCE YESTERDAY EVENING, AS FIREFIGHTERS HAVE IT ABOUT ONE THIRD CONTAINED.

THE FIRE THAT WAS STARTED BY LIGHTNING ON AUGUST 18 HAS CONSUMED 35,270 ACRES AS OF THIS MORNING, AND IS 32% CONTAINED. THE FIRE STILL THREATENS DOZENS OF RESIDENCES AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES, AND HAS DESTROYED AT LEAST ONE HOME SO FAR. HIGHWAY 299 REOPENS JH 08/28/12

HIGHWAY 299 HAS REOPENED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.
