NORTH PASS FIRE UPDATE 1 JH 08/31/12

THE NORTH PASS FIRE THAT, STARTED NEARLY TWO WEEKS AGO BY LIGHTNING STRIKE JUST 10 MILES OUTSIDE OF COVELO, CONTINUES TO RAGE, BUT FIREFIGHTERS ARE MAKING PROGRESS.

THE BLAZE HAS CONSUMED MORE THAN 34, 000 ACRES AS OF LAST NIGHT, AND IS 37% CONTAINED. OVER TWO THOUSAND FIREFIGHTERS ARE PUTTING OUT HOT SPOTS AND STRENGTHENING CONTROL LINES IN THE RUGGED MOUNTAIN TERRAIN. THE FIRE HAS DESTROYED 11 STRUCTURES, AND DOZENS MORE ARE STILL THREATENED. FIVE INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED SO FAR.

MAN SHOOTS AT UTILITY WORKERS JH 08/31/12

A LAKE COUNTY MAN SHOT AT UTILITY WORKERS INSTALLING EQUIPMENT AT HIS HOME.

TWO MEN WORKING FOR NORTH COAST ENERGY SERVICES HAD CALLED 64 YEAR OLD DENNIS LEROY CATO ON TUESDAY TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR WEDNESDAY TO INSTALL ENERGY EFFICIENT UTILITIES AT HIS HOME. THEY ARRIVED AT THE SCHEDULED TIME AND BEGAN WORK. JUST AS THEY WERE FINISHING UP, CATO EMERGED FROM THE HOME, APPEARING TO BE INTOXICATED, AND TOLD THE MEN HE WAS GOING TO SHOOT THEM. THEY BEGAN PACKING UP TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. BEFORE THEY COULD FINISH, CATO CAME BACK OUTSIDE WITH A HANDGUN AND OPENED FIRE HITTING THEIR TRUCK AT LEAST TWICE. THE TWO WORKERS RAN AND TOOK REFUGE AT A NEARBY RESIDENCE WHILE CONTACTING THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT. DEPUTIES DETAINED CATO WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE WAS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SEVERAL OTHER CHARGES.

POPEYE THE MUSSEL SNIFFING DOG JH 08/31/12

IF YOUR BOATING AT LAKE MENDOCINO OVER THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND, YOU WILL NEED TO PASS BY POPEYE THE MUSSEL SNIFFING DOG.

POPEYE WILL BE RANDOMLY INSPECTING BOATS BETWEEN 8 AM AND 1 PM THIS WEEKEND. IF A MUSSEL IS FOUND ON A BOAT, THE BOAT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LAUNCH AND THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME WILL BE IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED, ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS. THE INSPECTION PROGRAM IS TO HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE QUAGGA AND ZEBRA MUSSELS FROM INFESTING NORTH COAST WATERWAYS. POPEYE WILL BE AT THE LAKE MENDOCINO NORTH RAMP ON SUNDAY, AND AT THE SOUTH RAMP ON MONDAY.

CHP URGES DRIVING SAFETY JH 08/31/12

DURING THIS HEAVILY TRAVELED LABOR DAY WEEKEND, CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICERS WILL BE OUT IN FORCE.

THEY WILL BE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THE ROADS DURING THIS MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD. ALL AVAILABLE OFFICERS WILL BE ON PATROL CRACKING DOWN ON IMPAIRED DRIVERS, SPEEDERS, AND THOSE WHO ARE A DANGER TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS. THE MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD BEGINS TODAY AT 6PM AND RUNS THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT.

GOVERNOR BROWN PENSION PLAN JH 08/31/12

GOVERNOR BROWNS PENSION REFORM AGREEMENT WILL LIKELY HAVE AN IMPACT ON LOCAL WORKERS.

THE AGREEMENT WILL SAVE TAX PAYERS BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BY CAPPING BENEFITS, INCREASING THE RETIREMENT AGE AND MORE. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE PLAN WILL NOT JUST AFFECT STATE WORKERS, BUT FUTURE MUNICIPAL WORKERS AS WELL. OFFICIALS SAY THE CHANGES WILL AFFECT LOCAL MISCELLANEOUS EMPLOYEES AND LOCAL FIRE AND POLICE EMPLOYEES, AS BOTH THE RETIREMENT AGES AND FORMULAS WILL UNILATERALLY ROLL BACK.

CAL FIRE IS OFFERING A TOUR OF THE BASE CAMP FOR THE NORTH PASS FIRE.

THE TOUR WILL BE TODAY AT2 PM, GIVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THIS FIRE, THAT HAS AFFECTED FOR THAN 1800 PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY. TO ATTEND, MEET AT THE HIDDEN OAKS PARKING LOT OFF HIGHWAY 162. CAL FIRE ASKS THAT YOU AVOID PARKING IN THE CASINO PARKING AREA. THEY RECOMMEND YOU WEAR COMFORTABLE WALKING SHOES.

AN AIR QUALITY ALERT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE COVELO / ROUND VALLEY AREA AND INLAND MENDOCINO COUNTY.

SMOKE IS LIKELY TO BE HEAVY AT TIMES DUE TO THE WILDFIRES. IT IS ADVISED THAT ALL RESIDENTS DECREASE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND STAY INDOORS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS. SENSITIVE INDIVIDUALS SHOULD BE PARTICULARLY CAREFUL.

THE NORTH PASS FIRE, THAT STARTED NEARLY TWO WEEKS AGO BY LIGHTNING STRIKE, DESTROYED ANOTHER RESIDENCE OVERNIGHT

THAT BRINGS THE DESTRUCTION TOTAL TO 5 RESIDENCES AND 7 OUTBUILDINGS, WHILE DOZENS MORE STRUCTURES REMAIN THREATENED. THE BLAZE HAS CONSUMED MORE THAN 34, 000 ACRES AS OF THIS MORNING, AND IS 37% CONTAINED. TWO MORE INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED SINCE YESTERDAY, BRINGING THE TOTAL INJURIES TO SEVEN. THOUGH THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AND FIRE AGENCIES CONSIDERED RESENDING THE EVACUATION ORDERS IN THE AREA YESTERDAY, THE MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS REMAIN IN PLACE. REMEMBERING DOUG ROSOFF JH 08/31/12

MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE GATHERED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE INTERSECTION OF EAST GOBBI STREET AND SOUTH ORCHARD AVENUE, TO HONOR DOUG ROSOFF.

ROSOFF WAS KILLED AT THE INTERSECTION LAST FRIDAY, AFTER BEING HIT BY A DUMP TRUCK ON ITS WAY THE MCDONALDS CONSTRUCTION SITE. YESTERDAYS MEMORIAL WAS ORGANIZED IN PART BY A GROUP CALLED WALK AND BIKE MENDOCINO. PEOPLE STOOD ON ALL FOUR CORNERS OF THE INTERSECTION, MANY HOLDING SIGNS THE SIMPLY SAID REMEMBER DOUG. MUCH OF THOSE IN ATTENDANCE RODE BICYCLES AND WALKED TO THE EVENT. SEVERAL ADDED FLOWERS TO THE GROWING COLLECTION NEAR A WHITE BICYCLE FRAME CHAINED TO A TREE AT THE CORNER, JUST FEET FROM WHERE ROSOFF DIED.
