LAKE COUNTY COUPLE ARRESTED FOR POT CULTIVATION JH 09/28/12

TWO SEARCH WARRANTS LED TO TWO ARRESTS AND SEIZURE OF NUMEROUS MARIJUANA PLANTS AND CASH IN LAKE COUNTY.

IN AUGUST, THE SHERIFF’S NARCOTICS TASK FORCE RECEIVED INFORMATION ON A LOCAL MAN WHO HAD BEEN ARRESTED IN TEXAS FOR TRAFFICKING MARIJUANA. DETECTIVES SUBSEQUENTLY CONDUCTED AN OVERFLIGHT OF THE MANS PROPERTY AND FOUND A POT GARDEN. DEPUTIES ARRIVED AT THE HOME OF 53 YEAR OLD WILLIAM JASON COLEMAN, AND SEIZED 38 LARGE POT PLANTS, ONE AND A HALF POUNDS OF PROCESSED POT, TWO FIREARMS, AND $1,900 IN CASH. WHEN QUESTIONING COLEMAN’S GIRLFRIEND, 54 YEAR OLD ROBIN LOUISE JOHNSON, SHE STATED THAT SHE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MARIJUANA GROW, BECAUSE SHE HAD HER OWN GARDEN. DETECTIVES THEN WENT TO HER HOME AND SEIZED ANOTHER 51 POT PLANTS AND ONE FIREARM. BOTH COLEMAN AND JOHNSON WERE BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

SMALL LAKE COUNTY FIRE QUICKLY CONTAINED JH 09/28/12

FIREFIGHTERS QUICKLY CONTAINED A SMALL WILDLAND FIRE IN LAKE COUNTY.

THE BLAZE WAS IN THE 8500 BLOCK OF HARRINGTON FLAT ROAD SHORTLY AFTER 1 PM YESTERDAY. AS CURRENT WEATHER CIONDITIONS HAVE INCREASED THE DANGER OF FIRE, A HEAVY RESPONCE BY MULTIPLE ENGINES AND SEVERAL AIRCRAFT HAD THE BLAZE CONTAINED WITHIN 30 MINUTES. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG AND WEAPONS CHARGES JH 09/28/12

A TRAFFIC STOP LAST NIGHT, LED TO AN ARREST WITH DRUG AND WEAPONS CHARGES.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES PULLED OVER A VEHICLE WITH NO TAIL LIGHTS ON HIGHWAY 162 IN COVELO, AROUND 9:45 PM. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN BY 24 YEAR OLD JOSHUA CLAYTON HANOVER. DEPUTIES IMMEDIATELY OBSERVED MARIJUANA INSIDE THE VEHICLE. A SEARCH REVEALED A LOADED RIFLE BEHIND THE DRIVERS SEAT, METHAMPHETAMINE AND A METH PIPE. HANOVER WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON 175 JH 09/28/12

A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT RESULTED IN A WOMAN BEING FLOWN TO AN OUT OF COUNTY TRAUMA CENTER.

THE CRASH WAS SHORTLY AFTER 8 PM LAST NIGHT ON HIGHWAY 175 AT ADMIRAL WAY. ACCORDING TO CHP, THE VEHICLE LEFT THE ROADWAY AND HIT A TREE. THE DRIVER HAD TO BE EXTRICATED FROM THE WRECK. CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

POWER OUTAGE THAT CLOSED SCHOOLS, CAUSED BY CAR ACCIDENT JH 09/28/12

YESTERDAYS POWER OUTAGE THAT CLOSED SCHOOLS IN LAKE COUNTY WAS CAUSED BY A CAR ACCIDENT.

THE CRASH OCCURED SHORTLY BEFORE 3 AM ON LAKE STREET AT BRYANT ROAD, AS I FIRST REPORTED YESTERDAY. INITIALLY REPORTED AS A HIT AND RUN, CHP HAS NOW INDICATED THAT 29 YEAR OLD KORY REYNOLDS WAS DRIVING SOUTHBOUND ON LAKE STREET WHEN HIS VEHICLE LEFT THE ROADWAY AND HIT THE POWER POLE. THE CRASH SHEARED OFF THE POLE AND RESULTED IN THE POWER OUTAGE AND SCHOOL CLOSURES. REYNOLDS WAS ARRESTED AT THE SCENE FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE.

REDWOOD VALLEY LUMBER FIRE CAUSE UNKNOWN JH 09/28/12

THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE THAT BURNED A REDWOOD VALLEY LUMBER MILL LAST WEEK IS STILL UNDETERMINED AFTER AN INVESTIGATION BY CALFIRE AND THE REDWOOD VALLEY-CALPELLA FIRE DEPARTMENT.

THE FIRE STARTED ON THE NORTH-EAST CORNER OF THE MILL AT ABOUT 1:41 AM AND COMPLETELY BURNED THE BUILDING. THE BALAZE ALSO CONSUMED TWO FORKLIFTS, CAUSING THEIR PROPANE TANKS TO EXPLODE, ALONG WITH NEMEROUS HOUSEHOLD SIZE PROPANE TANKS INSIDE THE BUILDING. AUTHORITIES SAY THEY WERE ABLE TO NARROW DOWN THE AREA OR ORIGIN, BUT WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. THE FIRE DIDN’T SPREAD BEYOND THE ONE BUILDING.

BILLY NORBURY MURDER TRIAL JH 09/28/12

LAWYERS DISCUSS LAST MINUTE CONCERNS WITH THE JUDGE, AS THEY PREPARE FOR THE MURDER TRIAL OF BILLY NORBURY.

34 YEAR OLD NORBURY FACES MURDER CHARGES WITH A SPECIAL ALLEGATION THAT HE USED A GUN IN THE KILLING OF 30 YEAR OLD JAMAL ANDREWS IN JANUARY. IN JULY, NORBURY CHANGED HIS PLEA FROM NOT GUILTY TO GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY. THE EVALUATING DOCTORS TESTIMONY WILL BE KEY IN THIS TRIAL, THAT IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN MONDAY.

CITY OF UKIAH TREE TRIMMING CONTRACT JH 09/28/12

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL APPROVED A THREE YEAR AGREEMENT WITH AN OUT OF STATE COMPANY FOR TREE TRIMMING.

CITY STAFF RECOMMENDED THE CONTRACT BE AWARDED TO ASPLUNDH TREE EXPERT COMPANY BASED IN PENNSYVANIA. WHEN ASKED WHY THE CONTRACT SHOULDN’T BE AWARDED TO A LOCAL COMPANY, THE CITY’S ELECTRICAL ENGINEER INFORMED THE COUNCIL THAT MOST OF THE TRIMMING IS AROUND HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINES. THIS IS VERY SPECIALIZED WORK, AND THERE AREN’T ANY LOCAL PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO DO THAT. THE COUNCIL APPROVED THE CONTRACT UNANIMOUSLY.

ARRESTS MADE IN TEEN STABBING JH 09/27/12

THREE MEN SUSPECTED OF BEING INVOLVED IN THE STABBING OF A UKIAH TEEN LAST WEEK WERE CHARGED ON TUESDAY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, 18 YEAR OLD JAIME ZAMBRANO, AND 19 YEAR OLD MARCOS VASQUEZ OF UKIAH WERE ARRESTED MONDAY ON DRUG CHARGES. TUESDAY, AFTER DETECTIVES INTERVIEWED THEM ABOUT THE STABBING, BOTH SUSPECTS WERE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON AND CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY IN THAT CASE. DETECTIVES ALSO CONTACTED 26 YEAR OLD JORGE ALVARADO OF UKIAH, AND ARRESTED HIM ON THE SAME CHARGES RELATED TO THE STABBING THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE AREA OF VINEWOOD PARK LAST THURSDAY. UKIAH POLICE SAY THE STABBING INCIDENT WAS GANG RELATED, AND THAT IT HAS NOW ARRESTED ALL OF ITS SUSPECTS.

BOMB THREAT AT LAKE COUNTY COURT HOUSE JH 09/27/12

A BOMB THREAT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON LED TO THE EVACUATION OF THE LAKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE.

AN ANONYMOUS MALE SUBJECT HAD PHONED IN THE THREAT TO A LAKE COUNTY RECORD-BEE REPORTER, WHO THEN REPORTED THE THREAT TO THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE. THE BUILDING WAS SEARCHED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND NO BOMB WAS FOUND. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS CONTINUING TO INVESTIGATE THE THREAT. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE BOMB THREAT ALLEGEDLY WAS IN RESPONSE TO ONGOING MARIJUANA ERADICATIONS TAKING PLACE AROUND THE COUNTY. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAID THEY DO NOT PLAN ON LETTING UP ON THEIR ERADICATION EFFORTS BECAUSE OF THE THREAT.

HIT AND RUN CRASH DAMAGES POWER POLE JH 09/27/12

AN EARLY MORNING HIT AND RUN CRASH IN LOWER LAKE DAMAGED A POWER POLE AND RESULTED IN A POWER OUTAGE.

THE CRASH WAS REPORTED JUST BEFORE 3 AM THIS MORNING ON LAKE STREET AT BRYANT ROAD. ACCORDING TO CHP, THE CRASH SHEARED OFF THE POWER POLE WITH LINES DOWN. THE POLE WAS STILL HANGING FROM THE WIRES. NO SUSPECT INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE.

COAST MURDER CONSPIRACY CONVICTION UPHELD BY SUPREME COURT JH 09/27/12

THE CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT UPHELD THE 2010 VERDICT FOR KENNETH ALLEN ROGERS, CONVICTED OF HIRING A HIT MAN TO MURDER HIS POLITICAL COMPETITION MORE THAN FIVE YEARS AGO.

THE DECISION MEANS A SENTENCE HANDED DOWN IN MARCH 2010 STANDS. ROGERS WAS CONVICTED OF CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN THE 2005 SHOOTING OF 53 YEAR OLD ALAN SIMON, WHO HAD JUST REPLACED ROGERS ON THE COASTAL WATER BOARD IN AN AUGUST 2004 RECALL ELECTION. AFTER DEFEATING ROGERS, SIMON VOTED TO FIRE HIM AS ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF. ROGERS WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE HIS SENTENCE OF 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON.

RULING IN PENDING POT CASE JH 09/27/12

A JUDGE RULED THAT THE PLANTIFFS IN A PENDING LAWSUIT CHALLENGING LAKE COUNTY’S URGENCY MARIJUANA CULTIVATION LAW COULD NOT PROCEED USING TWO OF ITS THREE ORIGINAL ARGUMENTS.

THE JUDGE FOUND IN THE COUNTY’S FAVOR WITH REGARD TO THE PLANTIFFS’ ARGUMENTS THAT THE URGENCY ORDINANCE WAS AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT OF THE COMPASSIONALE USE ACT AND THAT THE ORDINANCE CONFLICTED WITH AND WAS PREEMPTED BY STAT LAW. THE JUDGE RULED IN THE PLANTIFFS FAVOR ON THE THIRD CAUSE OF ACTION, THAT THE QUALIFIED GROWERS HAD A VESTED RIGHT TO CULTIVATE, AND LEFT THE PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION IN EFFECT. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE PLANTIFFS HAD NOT DECIDED WHETHER OR NOT TO PURSUE A PERMANENT INJUNCTION.

LAKE COUNTY SCHOOL CLOSURES JH 09/27/12

SEVERAL SCHOOLS IN LAKE COUNTY HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL BE CLOSED TODAY, DUE TO A POWER OUTAGE.

LOWER LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, LOWER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL, CARLE HIGH SCHOOL, AND LEWIS SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED TODAY. ALL OTHER SCHOOLS IN LAKE COUNTY WILL BE OPEN AS USUAL. ALL SCHOOLS ARE EXPECTED TO OPEN AGAIN BY TOMORROW.

TRANSIENTS DRAINING UKIAH’S POLICE FORCE JH 09/27/12

THE GROWING NUMBER OF TRANSIENTS IN UKIAH IS DRAINING THE RESOURCES OF THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT.

A LARGE OAK TREE ALONG THE RAILROAD TRACKS JUST SOUTH OF EAST GOBBI STREET HAS BECOME A FOCAL POINT IN THE CITY’S STRUGGLE TO CONTAIN AN EVER PRESENT GROUP OF LOUD, VIOLENT AND OFTEN DRUNK TRANSIENTS. OFFICERS HAVE RESPONDED TO THE TREE AREA 170 TIMES SINCE JANUARY, FOR PEOPLE DRINKING, FIGHTING AND NUMEROUS OTHER VIOLATIONS OF LAW. AUTHORITIES SAY THE CITY DOESN’T HAVE THE RESOURCES TO KEEP CHASING PEOPLE OUT OF THE AREA AND CLEAN UP AFTER THEM. POLICE ARE HOPING TO BUILD SUPPORT FOR AN ORDINENCE BANNING THE SALE OF SINGLE BOTTLES AND CANS OF MALT LIQUOR TO HELP WITH THE SITUATION. AUTHORITIES POINT OUT THAT THE COMMUNITY NEEDS TO REALIZE THAT PEOPLE ARE HERE BECAUSE THEY’RE GETTING THEIR NEEDS MET. GIVING THEM MONEY AND FOOD MAY FEEL GOOD, BUT YOU’RE ENABLING THEM. THERE ARE PLENTY OF SERVICES AVAILABLE TO THEM, BUT THEY ARE CHOOSING NOT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM.

MENDO COUNTY EMPLOYEES TO PAY 15% MORE FOR HEALTH CARE JH 09/27/12

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISOES APPROVED A 15% INCREASE TO COUNTY EMPLOYEES HEALTH CARE PREMIUMS.

UNION REPRESENTATIVES OBJECTED STATING THAT COUNTY EMPLOYEES HAD ALREADY TAKEN A 10% PAY CUT, AND ARGUED THAT PREMIUMS SHOULDN’T INCREASE ON TOP OF THAT. THE BOARD RESPONDED, INDICATING THAT WITHOUT THE INCREASE, THE FUNDS WOULD HAVE TO COME FROM THE RESERVE, WHICH WOULD DECIMATE THE RESERVE AND LIKELY RESULT IN LAYOFFS OR FUTURE WAGE CUTS.

MENDO COUNTY JUDGE INVALIDATES STATE REGS JH 09/27/12

A MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE RULED IN FAVOR OF A GROUP OF LOCAL LAND OWNERS WHO SUED THE CALIFORNIA STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD OVER NEW REGULATIONS AFFECTING RUSSIAN RIVER WATER USED FOR FROST PROTECTION IN VINEYARDS.

THE JUDGE AGREED WITH PLANTIFFS AND DECLARED THE NEW REGULATIONS ‘CONSTITUTIONALLY VOID’. THE STATE WATER BOARD HAS 60 DAYS TO APPEAL.

MAN ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS HIMSELF IN FOOT JH 09/26/12

A POTTER VALLEY MAN ACCIDENTALLY SHOT HIMSELF WHILE LOOKING FOR A BEAR.

32 YEAR OLD NICHOLAS ANDREW NOEL TOLD AUTHORITIES HE WAS CAMPING IN THE BUSHES ABOUT TEN MILES UP THE DESHIELD RANCH ROAD FROM EEL RIVER ROAD. NOEL ADVISED THERE WAS A BEAR IN THE AREA, SO HE GRABBED HIS SHOTGUN AND WAS LOOKING FOR THE ANIMAL WHEN HE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT HIMSELF IN THE RIGHT FOOT. HE THEN MANAGED TO GET A RIDE FROM UNKNOWN PERSONS WHO HAPPENED TO BE DRIVING BY, AND WAS DROPED OF AT THE INTERSECTION WHERE DEPUTIES FOUND HIM. THE DRIVER THEN WENT TO A RESIDENCE ON VAN ARSDALE ROAD AND CALLED 911, BEFORE LEAVING THE AREA. NOEL WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER.

TWO SMALL FIRES NEAR UKIAH JH 09/26/12

TWO SMALL FIRES WERE REPORTED YESTERDAY MORNING IN THE UKIAH AREA.

THE FIRST FIRE BROKE OUT AT ABOUT 6:40 AM AT LUCKY DAY SECOND HAND CLOTHING STORE ON SOUTH STATE STREET. THE BLAZE STARTED OUTSIDE THE STORE AND SPREAD INSIDE, AND ALSO CAUGHT UTILITY LINES ON FIRE, CAUSING A LARGE OUTAGE. THE BUILDING SURVIVED, AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. A SECOND FIRE WAS REPORTED AT 8:48 AM ON HIGHWAY 20 BETWEEN MARINA DRIVE AND EAST ROAD. IT WAS A VEGETATION FIRE AND WAS QUICKLY CONTAINED WITH LITTLE DAMAGE. CAUSE OF BOTH FIRES IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

RASH OF THEFTS REPORTED IN UKIAH JH 09/26/12

THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING A RASH OF THEFTS THIS PAST MONTH THAT INCLUDE VEHICLE PROWLS, A STOLEN MOTORCYCLE, AND AN ATTEMPTED RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, THE ACTIVITY SEEMS TO BE CENTERD ON THE WEST SIDE OF UKIAH AND MOSTLY INVOLVES UNLOCKED VEHICLES. AT LEAST ONE HOME BURGLARY WAS REPORTED ON HIGHLAND AVENUE DURING THE DAY, HOWEVER A HOME ALRM BEING TRIGGERED SCARED THE WOULD BE THIEF AWAY. SOME MAIL HAS ALSO BEEN STOLEN AND CHECKS FROM THE MAIL CASHED. THE UKIAH POLICE WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU TO LOCK YOUR VEHICLES AND DON’T KEEP VALUABLES OR KEYS TO OTHER VEHICLES IN YOUR CAR.

LOST WALLET LEADS TO CREDIT CARD THEFT JH 09/26/12

A WALNUT CREEK MAN NOTIFIED THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT THAT HE HAD LOST HIS WALLET, CONTAINING MULTIPLE CREDIT CARDS, SOMEWHERE IN THE TOWNSHIP OF MENDOCINO.

89 YEAR OLD ROBERT WILLIAMS TOLD AUTHORITIES LAST FRIDAY, THAT A WOMAN HAD CALLED TO TELL HIM SHE FOUND HIS WALLET AND CREDIT CARDS, AND WANTED TO RETURN THEM VIA MAIL. ON SATURDAY, WILLIAMS CONTACTED AUTHORITIES AGAIN INDICATING THREE FRAUDULENT CHARGES WERE MADE WITH ONE OF HIS CARDS. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE TRANSACTIONS, LED POLICE TO AN EMPLOYEE OF THE LITTLE RIVER MARKET, 36 YEAR OLD TANNABELLE MULYCA. SHE CLAIMED TO HAVE PURCHASED GOODS FOR SOMEONE ELSE AND THEN TO HAVE RETURNED THE CARD TO THEM, WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE FALSE. MULYCA WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

MAN ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY JH 09/26/12

A FORT BRAGG RESIDENT REPORTED A HOME BURGLARY AND A STOLEN SAFE CONTAINING $30,000 DOLLARS IN VALUABLES.

56 YEAR OLD ROY RANTALA TOLD AUTHORITOES HE HAD GONE OUT FOR ABOUT FOUR HOURS ON SATURDAY, AND RETURNED TO FIND THAT HIS HOME HAD BEEN BROKEN INTO AND THE SAFE WAS MISSING. ROY TOLD DEPUTIES THAT HE BELIEVED HIS SON MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED. DEPUTIES CONTACTED 31 YEAR OLD MATHEW RANTALA AT HIS HOME IN WILLITS, AND FOUND HIM IN POSSESSION OF SOME OF THE STOLEN GOODS. MATHEW WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

LUMBER TRUCK OVERTURNED ON HIGHWAY 101 NEAR WILLITS JH 09/26/12

A TRUCK HAULING LUMBER OVERTURNED ON THE WILLITS GRADE FRIDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO CHP, 47 YEAR OLD FRANCISCO TORRES WAS HEADED NORTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 101, JUST SOUTH OF THE RIDGEWOOD RANCH, WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURED. AS THE TRUCK SLID ALONG THE ROAD, THE STRAPS HOLDING THE LOAD OF LUMBER CAME LOOSE AND SOME OF THE WOOD TOPPLED OVER THE CENTER DIVIDE AND ONTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THAT CAR WAS DRIVEN BY 32 YEAR OLD BRANDON HILLSTEAD OF SONOMA, WHO WAS NOT INJURED SERIOUSLY. TRAFFIC WAS BACKED UP FOR HOURS, AND CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

TWO MEN FOUND WITH STOLEN TOOLS AT SFTBALL FIELDS JH 09/26/12

TWO MEN WERE ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF ATTEMPTED BURGLARY AFTER BEING FOUND WITH STOLEN TOOLS AT THE SOFTBALL FIELDS NEAR HIGHWAY 101.

AN ALARM AT THE BALL FIELDS, ON CITY WELL ROAD, ACTIVATED AT 6:40 SATURDAY MORNING. WHEN OFFICERS ARRIVED, THEY FOUND 37 YEAR OLD PAUL MCMANUS AND 47 YEAR OLD DONALD DUKE COLLECTING RECYCLABLES FROM GARBAGE CANS. BOTH CLAIMED TO HAVE SEEN A COUPLE LEAVING THE AREA, AND DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHIONG ABOUT A BURGLARY. OFFICERS THEN FOUND BOLT CUTTERS AND A PADLOCK THAT HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE NEARBY BUILDING. THEY DETERMINED THAT MCMANUS AND DUKE HAD SMOKED METHAMPHETAMINE AND THEN BROKE INTO THE BUILDING. THEY WERE ALSO FOUND TO POSSESS ITEMS RECENTLY STOLEN FROM THE REDWOOD HEALTH CLUB. BOTH WERE BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

ILLEGAL TREE HARVESTING REPORT LEADS TO DRUG BUST JH 09/26/12

AUTHORITIES RECEIVED THE REPORT OF THE HARVESTING OF OAK TREES ON ROBINSON TRUST PROPERTY AT HIGHWAY 29, JUST FIVE MILES OUTSIDE UPPER LAKE. AN INVESTIGATION LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF A MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION ON FOUR SEPERATE SITES. SEIZED FROM THE LOCATIONS WERE APPROXIMATELY 650 POUNDS OF POT, A HASHISH LAB, TWO AND A HALF POUNDS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, PRESCRIPOTION PILLS, A FIREARM, SYRINGES, AND PACKAGING MATERIALS FOR DRUG SALES. FIVE PEOPLE WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

NEW APARTMENT PLANNED FOR TALMAGE JH 09/26/12

THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION WILL BE REVIEWING A PLAN TO BUILD AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN TALMAGE, AT ITS MEETING TONIGHT.

THE PROJECT IS DESCRIBED AS 19 UNITS THAT WOULD BE BUILT ON A 2.46 ACRE SITE THAT ALREADY HAS A SINGLE FAMILY HOME AND TWO STORAGE BUILDINGS, WHICH WOULD BE RETAINED. THE NEW BUILDINGS WOULD HAVE ONE OR TWO APARTMENT EACH, AND INCLUDE A GARAGE FOR EACH. TONIGHTS MEETING IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN AT 6 PM IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS.

UKIAH TEEN STABBED IN SUSPECTED GANG FIGHT JH 09/25/12

A UKIAH TEEN WAS STABBED LAST WEEK DURING A SUSPECTED GANG FIGHT.

POLICE RESPONDED TO REPORTS OF PEOPLE FIGHTING WITH WEAPONS, A STABBING, AND AT LEAST ONE VEHICLE THAT WAS BEING DRIVEN RECKLESSLY. APPEARANTLY, IT HIT A CURB AS THE DRIVER ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO RUN OVER A MAN. A TEEN WAS SEEN TRYING TO RUN INTO A HOUSE ON LOCKWOOD DRIVE, BUT WAS OVERTAKEN BY A GROUP WHO THREW HIM TO THE GROUND AND ATTACKED HIM.WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, THEY SAW TWO MEN RUNNING WITH POLES. THEY HID, BUT WERE LATER LOCATED, AND ONE, ALEJANDRO GONZALES, WAS ARRESTED. THE UKIAH FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE ASSUALTED 16 YEAR OLD BOY. HE WAS FOUND TO HAVE MULTIPLE STAB WOUNDS TO HIS BACK, AND WAS AIRLIFTED TO AN OUT OF THE AREA HOSPITAL WITH LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT BELIEVES THIS INCIDENT WAS GANG RELATED AND INVOLVES MANY SUSPECTS WHO HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND ARE BEING SOUGHT. SUSPICIOUS FIRE LEADS TO POT GROW IN WILLITS JH 09/25/12

A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER A FIRE LED AUTHORITIES TO HIS PROPERTY.

THE SUSPICIOUS FIRE WAS REPORTED THURSDAY MORNING IN THE 5700 BLOCK OF RIDGEWOOD ROAD. WHEN FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED, THEY WERE DENIED ACCESS TO THE PROPERTY. DEPUTIES THEN RESPONDED AND IDENTIFIED 32 YEAR OLD REX HASTINGS, WHO WAS ON FELONY PROBATION. UPON SEARCHING THE PROPERTY, AUTHORITIES LOCATED THE FIRE AND FOUND A MARIJUANA GARDEN WITH 13 MATURE PLANTS, PROCESSED POT AND USED AMMUNITION. DEPUTIES SEIZED THE PLANTS. HASTINGS THEN CONTACTED THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO EXPLAIN HE HAD A MEDICAL NEED FOR THE MARIJUANA, AND PRESENTED A FICTITIOUS COURT ORDER GRANTING HIM PERMISSION TO HAVE THE POT. HE THEN TOLD DEPUTIES THAT HE PLANNED TO SELL THE POT TO PAY HIS PROPERTY TAXES. HASTINGS WAS ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES AND BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE JH 09/25/12

A POINT ARENA WOMAN FLAGGED DOWN A MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTY TO REPORT THAT SHE HAD BEEN ASSUALTED BY HER BOYFRIEND.

THE VICTIM DISPLAYED VISIBLE SIGNS OF INJURY. HER BOYFRIEND, IDENTIFIED AS 52 YEAR OLD KEVIN SHARP, WAS LOCATED A SHORT TIME LATER, WALKING ON WINDY HOLLOW ROAD. SHARP WAS QUESTIONED AND ARRESTED, THEN BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

TRIO ACCUSED OF STEALING SEIZED MARIJUANA JH 09/25/12

ON THURSDAY, MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES OBSERVED A PICKUP DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 162, NEAR COVELO, AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, WITH MARIJUANA PLANTS IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK.

AS DEPUTIES FOLLOWED THE VEHICLE IN AN ATTEMPT TO CONDUCT A TRAFFIC STOP, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATEDTO SPEEDS OVER 80 MILES PER HOUR BEFORE PULLING INTO A DRIVEWAY. THE PASSENGERS WERE IDENTIFIED AS 63 YEAR OLD LINDA BRITTON, 37 YEAR OLD COLLEEN DOWNEY, AND 22 YEAR OLD KERRA STILLWELL. THE SUSPECTS ADMIT TO STEALING THE POT FROM THE ROUND VALLEY TRIBAL NATURAL RESOURCES DEPARTMENT YARD. APPEARANTLY, IT HAD BEEN SEIZED BY TRIBAL POLICE EARLIER THAT DAY. THE SUSPECTS SAID THEY PLANNED TO SELL THE POT AND SPLIT THE PROCEEDS. STILL WELL AND DOWNEY WERE CITED AND RELEASED. BRITTON, WHO WAS DRIVING, WAS ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES AND TRANSPORTED TO THE MANDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN ARRESTED FOR STABBING JH 09/25/12

A CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN WAS ARRESTED LATE LAST WEEK FOR ALLEGEDLY STABBING ANOTHER MAN HE HAD ACCUSED OF BEING INVOLVED WITH HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND.

THE VICTIM TOLD DEPUTIES THAT HE HAD BEEN AT 51 YEAR OLD DARYL EUGENE NEYS RESIDENCE THAT EVENING, SOCIALIZING WITH NEY AND OTHERS. NEY LEFT TO GO TO THE STORE AND RETURNED AND ACCUSED HIS EX GIRLFRIEND AND THE VICTIM OF HAVING A SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, NEY BECAME UPSET AND STARTING FIGHTING WITH THE VICTIM BEFORE HE PICKED UP TWO KITCHEN KNIVES AND TOLD THE VICTIM THAT HE WAS GOING TO KILL HIM. NEY ALLEGEDLY CHASED THE VICTIM INTO THE YARD AND STABBED HIM ONCE IN THE ABDOMEN. THE VICTIM WAS AIRLIFTED OUT OF COUNTY DUE TO THE SERIOUSNESS OF HIS INJURY. NEY WAS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AND ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

AN EARTHQUAKE SHOOK UKIAH AND SURROUNDING AREAS AT 8:15 THIS MORNING.

THE QUAKE FIRST REGISTERED A 4.3 MAGNITUDE, AND WAS THEN UPGRADED BY THE US GEOLOGICAL SERVICE TO A 4.5 MAGNITUDE. AN AFTERSHOCK THAT REGISTERED 2.4 FOLLOWED JUST 10 MINUTES LATER. BOTH QUAKES WERE CENTERED JUST 2 MILES NORTH OF TALMAGE.

BY THE FOLLOWING DAY, NEW INFORMATION INDICATED THAT THE SALE HAD BEEN MOVED TO CALISTOGA. BOTH THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S NARCOTICS TASK FORCE AND CALISTOGA POLICE LOCATED THE SUSPECTS IN AND AROUND A VEHICLE IN THE PARKING LOT OF A CALISTOGA RESTAURANT. A CANINE OFFICER ALERTED ON THE VEHICLE WHICH PROMPTED A SEARCH. OFFICERS FOUND APPROXIMATELY 1.5 POUNDS OF CRYSTAL ICE METHAMPHETAMINE AND $977 DOLLARS IN CASH. 29 YEAR OLD CARLOS MORENO GUZMAN AND 34 YEAR OLD ALMA NAVA WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED IN TO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

A SMALL FIRE WAS REPORTED FRIDAY AFTERNOON ON THE BACKSIDE OF DUNCAN PEAK NEAR HOPLAND.

BOTH HOPLAND FIRE AND CALFIRE RESPONDED AND WERE ABLE TO PUT OUT THE BLAZE QUICKLY WITH MINIMAL DAMAGE. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RESPONDED TO A HOME ON SODA BAY ROAD NEAR CLEARLAKE RIVIERA AFTER A MAN CALLED IN A THREAT TO SHOOT ANYBODY WHO WALKED DOWN HIS STREET.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT THE HOME LAST THURSDAY, THEY DID NOT FIND THE MAN NOR ANY WEAPONS. NO CHARGES ARE CURRENTLY PENDING AGAINST HIM.

DOWNTOWN LAKEPORT STORE CATCHES FIRE JH 09/24/12

A DOWNTOWN LAKEPORT STORE CAUGHT FIRE EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

THE BLAZE STARTED IN THE FRONT HALF OF PENNY LANE EMPORIUM, ON THE CORNER OF NORTH MAIN AND THIRD STREET. MANY ITEMS INSIDE THE GROUND LEVEL PENNY LANE EMPORIUM WERE DESTROYED, AS THE FIRE CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE HISTORIC BUILDING THAT DATES BACK TO THE MID 1870S. TWO LAW OFFICES ABOVE THE STORE ALSO SUSTAINED DAMAGE. FIREFIGHTERS CONTAINED THE BLAZE WITHIN AN HOUR. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

A CALSTAR FUNDING REQUEST AND AN INCREASE IN HEALTH INSURANCE COSTS FOR COUNTY EMPLOYEES ARE AMONG THE TOPICS ON THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ MEETINGS TO BE HELD TODAY AND TOMORROW.

THE CALIFORNIA SHOCK TRAUMA AIR RESCUE (CALSTAR) APPLIED TO THE CALIFORNIA STATEWIDE COMMUNITIES AUTHORITY TO FUND A NEW HELICOPTER FOR THE CALSTAR FACILITY AT THE UKIAH MUNICIPLE AIRPORT. THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL APPROVED PAYING THE INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING AND ARCHITACTURE FIRM OF GHD INC. $55,000 FOR WORK REDESIGNING THE OFF-RAMP FROM SOUTHBOUND HIGHWAY 101 TO TALMAGE ROAD.

THE FIRM WAS ALREADY AWARDED A CONTRACT IN JUNE FOR OVER $259,000 DOLLARS TO DESIGN AN IMPROVED OFF-RAMP FROM HIGHWAY 101 THAT WOULD SERVE BOTH DIRECTIONS OF TALMAGE ROAD. SINCE THE SECTION HEADED TO WESTBOUND TALMAGE AND THE REDWOOD BUSINESS PARK IS FREQUENTLY SO FULL OF CARS THAT THE LINE BACKS UP INTO THE HIGHWAY, TRAFFIC MITIGATION WILL BE NECESSARY TO BRING A COSTCO LOCATION TO AIRPORT PARK BOULEVARD. ACCORDING TO A STAFF REPORT, THE CITY’S WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT PROCESSES APPROXIMATELY 2,160 TONS OF BIOSOLIDS EACH YEAR, AND TWO COMPANIES BID TO HAUL THEM AWAY. AFTER A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHETHER LOCAL BIDDERS SHOULD BE GIVEN PREFERENCE, THE CONTRACTWAS AWARDED TO TOTAL WASTE SYSTEMS OF SANTA ROSA WHO BID $48 A TON TO REMOVE THE WASTE. UKIAH’S WASTE SOLUTIONS, WHICH PICKS UP THE CITY’S GARBAGE, BID $49 A TON, AND LOST THE BID FOR BEING ONLY $4000 DOLLARS MORE THAN THE OUT OF TOWN COMPETITOR.

THE QUAKE WAS CENTERED JUST 3 MILES NORTH EAST OF GEYSERS, AND ONLY 2 MILES WEST OF COBB. THE QUAKE REGISTERED A 3.3 MAGNITUDE. NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE HAVE BEEN REPORTED.

MULTIPLE SEARCH WARRANTS LEAD TO LARGE POT BUST JH 09/21/12

THE SERVICE OF SEVEN SEARCH WARRANTS THIS WEEK IN A MULTIAGENCY DRUG ERADICATION OPERATION, RESULTED IN 17 ARRESTS AND NEARLY 1,600 MARIJUANA PLANTS.

THE WARRANTS WERE SERVED ON FOUR PROPERTIES IN THE JERUSALEM VALLEY AREA NEAR MIDDLETOWN AND THREE IN UPPER LAKE. ACCORDING TO DETECTIVES, THEY ALSO LOCATED A HONEY OIL/HASH LAB AT ONE OF THE JERUSALEM VALLEY LOCATIONS. THIS METHOD OF CONVERTING MARIJUANA INTO HASH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, DUE TO HIGH RISK OF EXPLOSION. DETECTIVES ALSO LOCATED TWO FIREARMS AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE. AT ONE OF THE UPPER LAKE LOCATIONS, DETECTIVES LOCATED ONE FIREARM AND AN UNDERGROUND MARIJUANA GROWING FACILITY. THEY ALSO SEIZED A BULLDOZER, TRACTOR, $2,500 DOLLARS IN CASH AND OTHER VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT. ALL 17 SUSPECTS WERE BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

MAN CHARGED WITH DUI AFTER CRASH JH 09/21/12

A LUCERNE MAN WAS CHARGED WITH DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AFTER ALLEGEDLY CRASHING INTO A ROCK.

GREANEY WAS TREATED FOR CUTS AND BRUISES BEFORE BEING BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING AFTER TWO REPORTS OF SOMEONE PEEPING THROUGH THE WINDOWS OF HOMES.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES RECEIVED A CALL ABOUT A PROWLER ON MILL CREEK ROAD, JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT. ACCORDING TO THE REPORT, A 9 YEAR OLD GIRL SAW A MAN PEERING THROUGH THEIR KITCHEN WINDOW. APPEARANTLY, HE HAD ALSO ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE BATHROOM WINDOW. THE GIRLS MOTHER TOLD THE MAN TO LEAVE AND CALLED 911. AS DEPUTIES INVESTIGATED THE CALL, A SECOND 911 CALL CAME IN, AND A 67 YEAR OLD WOMAN REPORTED A PROWLER IN THE SAME AREA. DEPUTIES ARRIVED QUICKLY TO FIND 27 YEAR OLD PATRICK O’BRIEN NEAR THE FRONT DOOR OF THE SECOND CALLER’S HOME. O’BRIEN WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

A TWO ALARM FIRE AT CERRO PACIFIC LUMBER IN REDWOOD VALLEY WAS REPORTED EARLY YSTERDAY MORNING.

THE FIRE STARTED AROUND 1:41 AM, AS AREA RESIDENTS REPORTED HEARING A SERIES OF POPS AND EXPLOSIONS. ACOORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE BLAZE BURNED LUMBER AND SEVERAL CARS AT THE 20 ACRE YARD THAT SPECIALIZES IN REMANUFACTURING OF REDWOOD LUMBER. FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL AT ABOUT 5AM, AND MOP UP CONTINUED THROUGH THE DAY. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDE INVESTIGATION.

FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN TWO SMALL WILDLAND FIRES BEFORE THEY REACHED HOMES YESTERDAY EVENING.

THE MAIN FIRE BURNED ABOUT SEVEN ACRES ON THE WEST SIDE OF MISSION RANCHERIA ROAD ON BIG VALLEY RANCHERIA. THE FLAMES MOVED THROUGH BRUSH BETWEEN SEVERAL HOUSES AND KONOCTI VISTA CASINO. THE SECOND FIRE WAS A SPOT FIRE FROM THE MAIN BLAZE. IT WAS ON THE EAST SIDE OF MISSION RANCHERIA ROAD. FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE FIRST FIRE CONTAINED AND THE SECOND CONTROLLED BY 7 PM. CAUSE OF THE FIRES IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

ONE SENTINAL CHICKEN AND THREE MORE MOSQUITO SAMPLES COLLECTED IN LAKE COUNTY TESTED POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS THIS WEEK.

THE CHICKEN WAS IN THE LOWER LAKE AREA, AND THE MOSQUITO SAMPLES WERE COLLECTED NEAR CLEARLAKE OAKS AND UPPER LAKE. SO FAR THIS YEAR, 18 MOSQUITO SAMPLES, FIVE DEAD BIRDS AND THE ONE CHICKEN HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE VIRUS IN LAKE COUNTY. THAT MAKES THE TOTAL FINDINGS OF THE VIRUS IN LAKE COUNTY THIS YEAR THE HIGHEST SINCE 2006. GERHARD HANNEMEN PLEADED GUILTY TO CONSPIRING TO MANUFACTURE AND DISTRIBUTE MARIJUANA. AUTHORITIES SAY THAT FROM FEBRUARY TO DECEMBER OF 2011, HANNEMAN GREW POT HERE IN CALIFORNIA, THEN PROCESSED IT AND DROVE IT TO IOWA FOR DISTRIBUTION. HANNEMAN WAS SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS, AND WILL HAVE TO SERVE ANOTHER FOUR YEARS OF SUPERVISED RELEASE ONCE HE LEAVES PRISON.

OF THE AVAILABLE POSITIONS, ABOUT A THIRD OF THE FUNDING COMES OUT OF THE COUNTY’S GENERAL FUND, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME, OFFICIALS ARE TAKING STEPS TO SHRINK THE COUNTY’S WORK FORCE ON PAPER. THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS LAST WEEK FROZE 78 COUNTY JOBS, DESIGNATING THEM AS ‘VACANT UNFUNDED’. THE MOVE WAS ONE OF SEVERAL CHANGES COUNTY STAFF PROPOSED FOR THE COUNTY’S POSITION ALLOCATION TABLE, WHICH ALSO INVOLVES MOVING JOBS TO DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE BUDGET, AND, IN SOME CASES, HIRING. SYDNEY SWAN, AS HE WAS NAMED BY LAKE COUNTY RESIDENT J. HOLDEN, HAS GRACED THE WATERS OFF THE SHORES ON NORTH LAKEPORT FOR MANY YEARS. IN 2005, HOLDEN HAD IMPORTED A FEMALE PARTNER FOR SYDNEY, WHICH HE NAMED CINDERELLA SWAN. IN TIME THE TWO BIRDS BECAME INSEPERABLE, AS MUTE SWANS ARE MONOGAMOUS LOYAY BIRDS. THE EVENING OF AUGUST 23, SYDNEY WAS SEEN ON THE BEACH AT THE CHALET MOTEL IN LAKEPORT. THE NEXT MORNING, HIS DEAD BODY WAS FOUND FLOATING JUST OFF SHORE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SWAN CANNOT BE REPLACED, AS IT HAS BECOME ILLEGAL TO IMPORT THEM IN RECENT YEARS. A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER AN ASSAULT, A BURGLARY, AND A HIGH SPEED VEHICLE CHASE.

IT STARTED MONDAY MORNING WHEN A 32 YEAR OLD UNIDENTIFIED MAN GAVE A RIDE TO A MAN TO A REDWOOD VALLEY LOCATION, WHERE HE SAID HE HAD FAMILY. THE DRIVER WAS THEN ASSAULTED BY THE MAN HE GAVE A RIDE TO. MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARRIVED TO INVESTIGATE, AND DISCOVERED THAT THE HOME HAD BEEN BURGLARIZED BY A FAMILY MEMBER, 21 YEAR OLD KEVIN KUINTZLE. IT WAS THEN LEARNED THAT A CORVETTE HAD JUST BEEN STOLEN AT A NEARBY RESIDENCE. DEPUTIES SPOTTED THE CORVETTE ON 101, THEN AGAIN ON NORTH BUSH STREET IN UKIAH, AND PURSUED. THE CHASE HIT SPEEDS OF 70 TO 80 MILES PER HOUR, BEFORE DEPUTIES CALLED IT OFF FOR PUBLIC SAFETY REASONS, AS THEY WERE NEAR AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THE CORVETTE WAS AGAIN SPOTTED ON CLAY STREET, AND THE CHASE WAS ON AGAIN. THIS TIME KUINTZLE TURNED ON MYSZKA PLACE AND EVENTUALLY INTO A DRIVEWAY, WHERE HE WAS DETAINED AND ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

EVONNE FENTON SAID A PAN ON THE STOVE CAUGHT FIRE SHORTYL AFTER NOON YESTERDAY, AND THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER SHE FOUND WAS NOT WORKING. THIRTEEN PEOPLE LIVED IN THE HOME, INCLUDING HER HUSBAND AND THEIR TEN CHILDREN. NONE OF THE FAMILY WAS INJURED, BUT ONE OF THE THREE FAMILY DOGS DID NOT MAKE IT OUT.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO POT AND CASH JH 09/18/12 A FRIDAY NIGHT TRAFFIC STOP LED TO THE ARREST OF A FORTUNA MAN FOR MARIJUANA AND A LARGE SUM OF CASH. MENDOCINO COUNTY DEPUTIES PULLED OVER 26 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER EICHINER FOR A MINOR TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, EICHINER WAS DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE. HE ALSO INFORMED OFFICERS THAT HE HAD POT IN THE VEHICLE. A SEARCH REVEALED POT AND OVER $90,000 DOLLARS IN CASH HIDEN IN THE TRUNK. EICHINER WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL. 

POLICE LOOK FOR SHOOTING SUSPECT JH 09/18/12

LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES CONTINUE TO SEARCH FOR A CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN SUSPECTED OF A THURSDAY NIGHT SHOOTING.

19 YEAR OLD WALTER FREDERICK WOLKENHAUER IS WANTED FOR THE SHOOTING NEAR NYLANDER PARK IN CLEARLAKE OAKS. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE VICTIM RECEIVED A PHONE CAL ENHAUER, CHALLENGING HIM TO A FIGHT AND THREATENING TO SHOOT HIM. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PHONE CALL, THE VICTIM LOOKED UP TO SEE WOLKENHOUER, WHO THEN REAN TOWARDS HIM. THE VICIM WAS SHOT AS HE ATTEMPTED TO FLEE. HE WAS TAKEN TO ST HELENA HOSPITAL IN CLEARLAKE. CREWS FIX DAMAGED HIGHWAY SIGNS AND GUARD RAILS JH 09/18/12

EMERGENCY REPAIRS ARE UNDER WAY TO REPLACE HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT DAMAGED IN WILDFIRES LAST MONTH.

THE WYE FIRE NOT ONLY DESTROYED HOMES AND NATURE, BUT IT DAMAGED HIGHWAY SIGNS AND GUARDRAILS AS WELL. CALTRANS IS MAKING THE NEEDED REPAIRS FROM THE JUNCTION OF HIGHWAY 20 AND 53 EAST TO LONG VALLEY ROAD, BETWEEN 7 AM AND 4 PM. TRAFFIC WILL BE RESTRICTED TO ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION OF TRAVEL, WITH CALTRANS ADVISING THAT MOTORISTS MAY EXPERIENCE MINOR TRAFFIC DELAYS.

LAKEPORT COUNCIL TO CONSIDER WATER & SEWER RATE INCREASE JH 09/18/12

THE LAKEPORT CITY COUNCIL WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED INCREASES FOR WATER AND SEWER RATES IN CONFORMANCE WITH PROPOSITION 218.

THE CITY PROPOSAL WOULD PHASE IN INCREASES FOR WATER AND SEWER RATES OVER THE NEXT THREE AND A HALF YEARS. PROPERTY OWNERS ARE ALLOWED TO PROTEST THE RATES IN WRITING BEFORE THE END OF THE PUBLIC HEARING. IF A MAJORITY OF AFFECTED PROPERTY OWNERS PRESENT WRITTEN PROTESTS BY THE DEADLINE, THE PROPOSED RATE INCREASE WILL BE REJECTED. THE HEARING STARTS AT 6 PM TODAY IN LAKEPORT CITY HALL.

MENDOCINO COUNTY ADOPTS NEW BUDGET JH 09/18/12

THERE WERE NO LAYOFFS IN THE 2012-13 BUDGET ADOPTED TUESDAY BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.

THE BOARD VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO ADOPT THE $59.2 MILLION DOLLAR GENERAL FUND BUDGET THAT BUILDS RESERVES TO $4.2 MILLION DOLLARS. AFTER APPROVING THE FINAL BUDGET, THE BOARD ALSO APPROVED RECOMMENDATIONS TO REMOVE CERTAIN JOBS FROM ITS BOOKS, AND FREEZE OTHER VACANT JOBS. THE BOARD ALSO HEARD ARGUMENT FROM DEPARTMENT HEADS AND UNION REPRESENTATIVES THAT COUNTY STAFF IS STRETCHED AND IN NEED OF HELP IN THE FORM OF HIRING TO FILL MANY OF THOSE VACANT JOBS.

LAMPSON FIELD RECEIVES FEDERAL GRANT JH 09/18/12

CONGRESSMAN MIKE THOMPSON ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY, A DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION GRANT OF OVER $67,000 DOLLARS FOR THE LAMPSON FIELD AIRPORT.

THE PROJECT WILL REPLACE THE AIRPORT’S ROTATING BEACON WHICH HAS REACHED THE END OF ITS USEFUL LIFE. IT WILL ALSO INSTALL A PERIMETER AND DEVELOP DESIGN ALTERNATIVES FOR GATE REPLACEMENT AND FENCE LINE ROUTING. THE GRANT IS PROVIDED THROUGH THE DOT’S FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION.

CITY OF CLEARLAKE TO HOST COMMUNITY EVENTS JH 09/18/12

THE CITY OF CLEARLAKE IS HOSTING A SERIES OF COMMUNITY EVENTS TO HELP CREATE A PLAN FOR IMPROVING CONDITIONS ALONG LAKESHORE DRIVE.

THE PROJECT AREA ENCOMPASSES LAKESHORE DRIVE FROM OLYMPIC DRIVE TO OLD HIGHWAY 53, AND WILL ADDRESS WALKING, BICYCLING, PARKING, TRANSIT, STREET BEUATIFICATION, LAKE ACCESS AND ECONOMIC REVITALIZATION. STREET CONSTRUCTION WILL BE ONGOING AT THE CORNER OF GOBBI STREET AND SOUTH STATE STREET IN UKIAH.

THE PROJECT IS TO INSTALL SEWER AND WATER FACILITIES, A STORM DRAIN, ELECTRICAL CONDUITS AND MORE, AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH DECEMBER. THE INTERSECTION WILL BE SUBJECT TO TRAFFIC CONTROLS AT TIMES, AND SOME DELAYS MAY BE POSSIBLE.

LAKE COUNTY ROAD WORK JH 09/18/12

THE LAKE COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT WILL BE APPLYING A PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE TREATMENT CALLED CHIP SEAL TO SEVERAL ROADS TODAY AND TOMORROW.

THE WORK WILL BE DONE ON PITNEY LANE, ELK MOUNTAIN ROAD, MIDDLE CREEK ROAD, AND GOVERNMENT STREET. THE ROADS WILL BE OPEN TO ONE-WAY TRAFFIC ONLY, SUBJECT TO TRAFFIC CONTROL. THERE WILL BE POSSIBLE DELAYS OF UP TO 15 MINUTES BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 8 AM AND 6 PM. THE TREATMENT WILL ALSO BE APPLIED TO PARK WAY ON THURSDAY.

CROSSWALK IMPROVEMENT ON HIGHWAY 1 IN POINT ARENA JH 09/18/12

CALTRANS ANNOUNCED THAT CONSTRUCTION OF ACCESSIBLE SIDEWALKS AND CROSSWALKS IN POINT ARENA HAS BEGUN.

THE WORK WILL BE DONE ALONG HIGHWAY 1, BETWEEN MILL STREET AND SCOTT PLACE. PARKING WILL BE RESTRICTED AT SPOT LOCATIONS, AND THESE RESTRICTIONS WILL BE POSTED. A PEDESTRIAN SIDEWALK DETOUR WILL BE POSTED AS NEEDED.
