MAN ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS HIMSELF IN FOOT JH 09/26/12

A POTTER VALLEY MAN ACCIDENTALLY SHOT HIMSELF WHILE LOOKING FOR A BEAR.

32 YEAR OLD NICHOLAS ANDREW NOEL TOLD AUTHORITIES HE WAS CAMPING IN THE BUSHES ABOUT TEN MILES UP THE DESHIELD RANCH ROAD FROM EEL RIVER ROAD. NOEL ADVISED THERE WAS A BEAR IN THE AREA, SO HE GRABBED HIS SHOTGUN AND WAS LOOKING FOR THE ANIMAL WHEN HE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT HIMSELF IN THE RIGHT FOOT. HE THEN MANAGED TO GET A RIDE FROM UNKNOWN PERSONS WHO HAPPENED TO BE DRIVING BY, AND WAS DROPED OF AT THE INTERSECTION WHERE DEPUTIES FOUND HIM. THE DRIVER THEN WENT TO A RESIDENCE ON VAN ARSDALE ROAD AND CALLED 911, BEFORE LEAVING THE AREA. NOEL WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER.

TWO SMALL FIRES NEAR UKIAH JH 09/26/12

TWO SMALL FIRES WERE REPORTED YESTERDAY MORNING IN THE UKIAH AREA.

THE FIRST FIRE BROKE OUT AT ABOUT 6:40 AM AT LUCKY DAY SECOND HAND CLOTHING STORE ON SOUTH STATE STREET. THE BLAZE STARTED OUTSIDE THE STORE AND SPREAD INSIDE, AND ALSO CAUGHT UTILITY LINES ON FIRE, CAUSING A LARGE OUTAGE. THE BUILDING SURVIVED, AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. A SECOND FIRE WAS REPORTED AT 8:48 AM ON HIGHWAY 20 BETWEEN MARINA DRIVE AND EAST ROAD. IT WAS A VEGETATION FIRE AND WAS QUICKLY CONTAINED WITH LITTLE DAMAGE. CAUSE OF BOTH FIRES IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

RASH OF THEFTS REPORTED IN UKIAH JH 09/26/12

THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING A RASH OF THEFTS THIS PAST MONTH THAT INCLUDE VEHICLE PROWLS, A STOLEN MOTORCYCLE, AND AN ATTEMPTED RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, THE ACTIVITY SEEMS TO BE CENTERD ON THE WEST SIDE OF UKIAH AND MOSTLY INVOLVES UNLOCKED VEHICLES. AT LEAST ONE HOME BURGLARY WAS REPORTED ON HIGHLAND AVENUE DURING THE DAY, HOWEVER A HOME ALRM BEING TRIGGERED SCARED THE WOULD BE THIEF AWAY. SOME MAIL HAS ALSO BEEN STOLEN AND CHECKS FROM THE MAIL CASHED. THE UKIAH POLICE WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU TO LOCK YOUR VEHICLES AND DON’T KEEP VALUABLES OR KEYS TO OTHER VEHICLES IN YOUR CAR.

LOST WALLET LEADS TO CREDIT CARD THEFT JH 09/26/12

A WALNUT CREEK MAN NOTIFIED THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT THAT HE HAD LOST HIS WALLET, CONTAINING MULTIPLE CREDIT CARDS, SOMEWHERE IN THE TOWNSHIP OF MENDOCINO.

89 YEAR OLD ROBERT WILLIAMS TOLD AUTHORITIES LAST FRIDAY, THAT A WOMAN HAD CALLED TO TELL HIM SHE FOUND HIS WALLET AND CREDIT CARDS, AND WANTED TO RETURN THEM VIA MAIL. ON SATURDAY, WILLIAMS CONTACTED AUTHORITIES AGAIN INDICATING THREE FRAUDULENT CHARGES WERE MADE WITH ONE OF HIS CARDS. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE TRANSACTIONS, LED POLICE TO AN EMPLOYEE OF THE LITTLE RIVER MARKET, 36 YEAR OLD TANNABELLE MULYCA. SHE CLAIMED TO HAVE PURCHASED GOODS FOR SOMEONE ELSE AND THEN TO HAVE RETURNED THE CARD TO THEM, WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE FALSE. MULYCA WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

MAN ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY JH 09/26/12

A FORT BRAGG RESIDENT REPORTED A HOME BURGLARY AND A STOLEN SAFE CONTAINING $30,000 DOLLARS IN VALUABLES.

56 YEAR OLD ROY RANTALA TOLD AUTHORITOES HE HAD GONE OUT FOR ABOUT FOUR HOURS ON SATURDAY, AND RETURNED TO FIND THAT HIS HOME HAD BEEN BROKEN INTO AND THE SAFE WAS MISSING. ROY TOLD DEPUTIES THAT HE BELIEVED HIS SON MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED. DEPUTIES CONTACTED 31 YEAR OLD MATHEW RANTALA AT HIS HOME IN WILLITS, AND FOUND HIM IN POSSESSION OF SOME OF THE STOLEN GOODS. MATHEW WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

LUMBER TRUCK OVERTURNED ON HIGHWAY 101 NEAR WILLITS JH 09/26/12

A TRUCK HAULING LUMBER OVERTURNED ON THE WILLITS GRADE FRIDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO CHP, 47 YEAR OLD FRANCISCO TORRES WAS HEADED NORTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 101, JUST SOUTH OF THE RIDGEWOOD RANCH, WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURED. AS THE TRUCK SLID ALONG THE ROAD, THE STRAPS HOLDING THE LOAD OF LUMBER CAME LOOSE AND SOME OF THE WOOD TOPPLED OVER THE CENTER DIVIDE AND ONTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THAT CAR WAS DRIVEN BY 32 YEAR OLD BRANDON HILLSTEAD OF SONOMA, WHO WAS NOT INJURED SERIOUSLY. TRAFFIC WAS BACKED UP FOR HOURS, AND CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

TWO MEN FOUND WITH STOLEN TOOLS AT SFTBALL FIELDS JH 09/26/12

TWO MEN WERE ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF ATTEMPTED BURGLARY AFTER BEING FOUND WITH STOLEN TOOLS AT THE SOFTBALL FIELDS NEAR HIGHWAY 101.

AN ALARM AT THE BALL FIELDS, ON CITY WELL ROAD, ACTIVATED AT 6:40 SATURDAY MORNING. WHEN OFFICERS ARRIVED, THEY FOUND 37 YEAR OLD PAUL MCMANUS AND 47 YEAR OLD DONALD DUKE COLLECTING RECYCLABLES FROM GARBAGE CANS. BOTH CLAIMED TO HAVE SEEN A COUPLE LEAVING THE AREA, AND DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHIONG ABOUT A BURGLARY. OFFICERS THEN FOUND BOLT CUTTERS AND A PADLOCK THAT HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE NEARBY BUILDING. THEY DETERMINED THAT MCMANUS AND DUKE HAD SMOKED METHAMPHETAMINE AND THEN BROKE INTO THE BUILDING. THEY WERE ALSO FOUND TO POSSESS ITEMS RECENTLY STOLEN FROM THE REDWOOD HEALTH CLUB. BOTH WERE BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

ILLEGAL TREE HARVESTING REPORT LEADS TO DRUG BUST JH 09/26/12

A REPORT OF ILLEGALLY CUT OAK TREES TURNED INTO A LARGE SCALE DRUG BUST.

AUTHORITIES RECEIVED THE REPORT OF THE HARVESTING OF OAK TREES ON ROBINSON TRUST PROPERTY AT HIGHWAY 29, JUST FIVE MILES OUTSIDE UPPER LAKE. AN INVESTIGATION LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF A MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION ON FOUR SEPERATE SITES. SEIZED FROM THE LOCATIONS WERE APPROXIMATELY 650 POUNDS OF POT, A HASHISH LAB, TWO AND A HALF POUNDS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, PRESCRIPOTION PILLS, A FIREARM, SYRINGES, AND PACKAGING MATERIALS FOR DRUG SALES. FIVE PEOPLE WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

NEW APARTMENT PLANNED FOR TALMAGE JH 09/26/12

THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION WILL BE REVIEWING A PLAN TO BUILD AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN TALMAGE, AT ITS MEETING TONIGHT.

THE PROJECT IS DESCRIBED AS 19 UNITS THAT WOULD BE BUILT ON A 2.46 ACRE SITE THAT ALREADY HAS A SINGLE FAMILY HOME AND TWO STORAGE BUILDINGS, WHICH WOULD BE RETAINED. THE NEW BUILDINGS WOULD HAVE ONE OR TWO APARTMENT EACH, AND INCLUDE A GARAGE FOR EACH. TONIGHTS MEETING IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN AT 6 PM IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS.

ROAD WORK IN WILLITS JH 09/26/12

CENTRAL AVENUE IN WILLITS WILL BE CLOSED FOR ROAD WORK TODAY AND TOMORROW.

THE STREET WILL BE CLOSED FROM SOUTH STREET TO OAK STREET FOR THE PURPOSE OF SIDEWALK DEMOLITION, STORM DRAIN INSTALLATION AND NEW CURB AND GUTTER INSTALLATION. ACCESS TO BUSINESSES IN THE AREA WILL STILL BE OPEN, HOWEVER, CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY MAY CAUSE SOME DELAYS.
