TEENS ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY AND CAR THEFT JH 01/24/13

THREE WILLITS TEENAGERS WERE ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING A CAR AND COMPUTER EQUIPMENT FROM THE WILLITS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, A VEHICLE WAS REPORTED STOLEN SUNDAY NIGHT ON RAILROAD AVENUE. POLICE SPOTTED THE VEHICLE A SHORT TIME LATER AND PULLED IT OVER. THERE WERE THREE OCCUPANTS, 17 AND 15 YEAR OLD BOYS AND A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL. WHILE SEARCHING THE VEHICLE POLICE FOUND COMPUTER EQUIPMENT STOLEN FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT DURING A BURGLARY THAT HAD NOT BEEN DISCOVERED UNTIL THEN. ALL THREE TEENS WERE BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JUVENILE HALL. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IN REGARD TO THIS CASE IS URGED TO CONTACT SERGEANT ELLIS AT 459-6122.

GAS THEFTS IN LAKEPORT JH 01/24/13

THE LAKEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT IS URGING THE COMMUNITY TO BE CAUTIOUS AND TAKE PRECAUTIONS AS A SERIES OF GAS THEFTS HAVE OCCURRED THIS MONTH.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE THEFTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE ON NINTH, BERRY, ESPLANADE, CRAWFORD, AND FIFTH STREETS. IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. THE POLICE ENCOURAGE CITIZENS TO BE AWARE OF SUSPICIOUS PERSONS OR ACTIVITIES AND CALL POLICE IMMEDIATELY. ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN FORMING A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM IS ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT OFFICER JOE EASTHAM AT 263-5491.

MAN ESCAPES BURNING HOME IN FORT BRAGG JH 01/24/13

A FORT BRAGG MAN WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE HIS BURNING HOME WITH THE HELP OF NEIGHBORS ON TUESDAY NIGHT.

JAMES JOHANSEN AWOKE TO THE SOUND OF FIRE IN HIS HOME, JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT TUESDAY, AND ESCAPED OUT A BEDROOM WINDOW. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO SUPPRESS THE FIRE QUICKLY, BUT BELIEVE THE FIRE WAS SUSPICIOUS IN NATURE. THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, AND ANYONE WITH INFORMATION, PHOTOS OR VIDEO IN REGARD TO THIS FIRE, IS ASKED TO PLEASE CONTACT OFFICER McLAUGHLIN OR KENDL AT 961-2800.

PAPER BAG CHARGE LIFTED IN WILLITS AREA JH 01/24/13

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTED ON TUESDAY TO LIFT THE NEWLY ADOPTED 10 CENT CHARGE FOR PAPER BAGS FOR GROCERY STORES IN AND AROUND WILLITS.

THIS WAS DONE TO STOP ANY UNDUE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE BETWEEN THE STORES IN WILLITS AND SURROUNDING AREAS LIKE LAYTONVILLE, AS LAYTONVILLE FALLS UNDER THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BAG ORDINANCE, HOWEVER WILLITS DOES NOT. UKIAH, FORT BRAGG AND THE COUNTY HAVE A PLASTIC BAG ORDINANCE IN PLACE, BUT THE WILLITS CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT CHOSE NOT TO DRAFT A LIKE ORDINANCE FOR THE CITY OF WILLITS, THE ONLY AREA IN THE COUNTY WITHOUT A BAG ORDINANCE IN PLACE.

WILLITS CITY COUNCIL APPOINTED AN INTERIM CITY MANAGER

THE WILLITS CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO APPOINT ADRIENNE MOORE AS THE INTERIM CITY MANAGER.

THE COUNCIL WILL NOW EMBARK ON A RECRUITMENT FOR A PERMANENT CITY MANAGER, WHICH THEY EXPECT WILL TAKE ABOUT SIX MONTHS.

MIDDLETOWN MAN INJURED IN TUESDAY CRASH JH 01/24/13

A MIDDLETOWN MAN WAS HOSPITALIZED TUESDAY AFTER CRASHING HIS CORVETTE ON HIGHWAY 29.

49-YEAR-OLD DAVID CLARK WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND AT AN UNKNOWN HIGH RATE OF SPEED. CLARK WAS PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE AND LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE. CLARKS CORVETTE SLID ACROSS THE HIGHWAY BEFORE STRIKING AN ASPHALT CURB AND UPHILL EMBANKMENT. CLARK WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MODERATE INJURIES.

PACE PROGRAM MOVES FORWARD IN MENDOCINO COUNTY JH 01/24/13

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ON TUESDAY, IN A SECOND VOTE ON THE MATTER, APPROVED ANOTHER STEP FORWARD IN STARTING A PROPERTY ASSESSED CLEAN ENERGY, OR PACE PROGRAM LOCALLY.

THOUGH SOME EXPRESSED CONCERN OVER THE PROGRAM BEING A LOAN GIVEN PRECEDENCE OVER ANY OTHER HOME LOANS, THE BOARD VOTED 3 TO 2 TO ENTER DISCUSSION WITH A TURNKEY OPERATOR ABOUT STARTING THE LOCAL PACE PROGRAM. PACE WOULD ALLOW RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTY OWNERS TO SIGN INDIVIDUAL CONTRACTS WITH THE COUNTY TO ASSESS THEMSELVES ON THEIR PROPERTY TAXES FOR THE COST OF ENERGY AND WATER EFFICIENT IMPROVEMENTS, WHICH WOULD BE PAID BACK OVER A PERIOD OF 20 YEARS.

ASSAULT SUSPECT ARRESTED IN LAKEPORT JH 01/24/13

A SUSPECT WANTED IN CONNECTION TO A DECEMBER ASSAULT CASE THAT LEFT A MALE JUVENILE SERIOUSLY INJURED, HAS BEEN ARRESTED

33-YEAR-OLD JOSHUA RAY MCLEOD WAS ARRESTED SHORTLY BEFORE 8 A.M. WEDNESDAY. ACCORDING TO LAKE COUNTY AUTHORITIES, MCLEOD WAS ARRESTED ON A FELONY WARRANT CHARGING ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON CAUSING GREAT BODILY INJURY, WILLFUL HARM OR INJURY TO A CHILD AND BATTERY CAUSING SERIOUS BODILY INJURY FOR ASSAULTING THE MALE JUVENILE WITHOUT PROVOCATION, AS HE WALKED WITH FRIENDS IN DECEMBER.

11 YEAR OLD INJURED IN ATV CRASH JH 01/24/13

A 14 YEAR OLD MALE AND HIS 11 YEAR OLD PASSENGER WERE RIDING AN ATV ON PRIVATE PROPERTY IN THE COVELO AREA SUNDAY WHEN A CRASH SENT THE 11 YEAR OLD TO THE HOSPITAL.

ACCORDING TO CHP, DUE TO REASONS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION, THE 14 YEAR OLD LOST CONTROL OF THE ATV, WHICH OVERTURNED AND LANDED ON THE BOYS. THE 11 YEAR OLD SUSTAINED INJURY AND WAS FLOWN TO UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER. THE CHP WANTS TO REMIND PARENTS THAT CHILDREN OPERATING OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES MUST BE ABLE TO SAFELY OPERATE ALL CONTROLS AND REQUIRE EXTRA SUPERVISION.

REGGAE ON THE RIVER MOVES BACK TO FRENCHS CAMP JH 01/24/13

THE POPULAR SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL KNOWN AS REGGAE ON THE RIVER WILL BE MOVING BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION THIS YEAR.

THE VENUE HAS CHANGED A COUPLE OF TIMES BETWEEN 2006 AND 2012, HOWEVER, THE 29TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL WILL BE AT FRENCHS CAMP FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2005. FRENCHS CAMP HOSTED THE EVENT FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS PRIOR TO ITS 2006 CHANGE OF VENUE. THE 6,000 AVAILABLE TICKETS MAY BE PURCHASED ONLINE BEGINNING FEBRUARY 1ST.
