CONSTRUCTION ON THE $210 MILLION BYPASS BEGAN FEB. 25, BUT SUFFERED DELAYS DUE TO THE DISCOVERY OF A BIRD’S NEST AND INTERFERENCE FROM PROTESTERS. SENSEMAN RELEASED THREE DEMANDS AT A NEWS CONFERENCE THURSDAY MORNING, SAYING SHE WILL GO ON A HUNGER STRIKE UNTIL THEY ARE MET. A CLEARLAKE WOMAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED WHEN A SEMI TRAILER CRASHED INTO HER CAR TUESDAY MORNING.

28 YEAR OLD KELLY PUTRAH WAS STOPPED AT THE LIGHT ON LAKESHORE DRIVE WAITING TO CROSS HIGHWAY 53 WHEN A SEMI TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON THE HIGHWAY LOST CONTROL AND THE TRAILER CRASHED INTO PUTRAHS VEHICLE. PUTRAH WAS TRANSPORTED TO ST HELENA HOSPITAL CLEARLAKE BEFORE BEING AIRLIFTED TO AN OUT OF THE AREA TRAUMA CENTER. NEAR 60 PEOPLE SPOKE AT TUESDAYS MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING IN REGARD TO THE HIGHWAY 101 BYPASS AROUND WILLITS.

THE MAJORITY OF THE SPEAKERS OPPOSED THE PROJECT, CITING THE LOSS OF TREES THAT ARE BEING CUT IN THE WET LANDS. SOME ARGUED THAT THERE WERE NO TRAFFIC CONGESTION ISSUES IN WILLITS, AND OTHERS CLAIMED THE BYPASS TRUE PURPOSE WAS TO CREATE A THOROUGHFARE FOR TOXIC CHEMICALS TO BE TRANSPORTED THROUGH THE AREA. BY THE END OF THE HEARING, THE BOARD APPROVED, IN A NARROW 3-2 VOTE, SENDING A LETTER OF SUPPORT TO CAL TRANS, CHP, ASSEMBLYMAN WESLEY CHESBRO, SENATOR NOREEN EVANS, AND CONGRESSMAN JARED HUFFMAN EXPRESSING THE COUNTYS CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT.

THE MAN KILLED MONDAY IN AN EARLY MORNING CRASH HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

21 YEAR OLD EVAN NICHOLS OF UKIAH, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE AND HIT AN EMBANKMENT ON HIGHWAY 20 JUST WEST OF THE POTTER VALLEY EXIT AROUND 4:45 AM. NICHOLS VEHICLE WAS IN THE EASTBOUND LANE WITH NO LIGHT ON, AND HE WAS STANDING INSIDE THE OPEN DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WHEN A GARBAGE TRUCK HIT HIM. ACCORDING TO CHP, THE DRIVER OF THE TRUCK SAID HE DID NOT SEE THE VICTIM OR HIS CAR.

MORE ARRESTS AT WILLITS BYPASS WORK SITE JH 03/27/13

MORE ARRESTS WERE MADE AS THE WILLITS BYPASS CONSTRUCTION AND PROTESTS CONTINUE.

OVER THE WEEKEND, CAL TRANS INSTALLED LIGHTS AND GENERATORS AT EACH OF THE TREE-SIT LOCATIONS ALONG THE ROUTE. ON MONDAY, A CHP HELICOPTER MONITORED THE TREE SITTERS FROM ABOVE, BUT THEY HAVE NOT MOVED FROM THEIR POSITIONS. CONTRACTORS BEGAN TO CUT TREES AND CLEAR A PATH FOR THE PROJECT, AND ARE EXPECTED TO EXPAND THEIR WORK THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE CORRIDOR AS SOON AS BIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AND FENCING ARE COMPLETED. FOUR MORE PROTESTERS WERE ARRESTED TUESDAY, BUT ONLY AFTER THEY GOT IN THE WAY OF EQUIPMENT AND STOPPED THE CHAIN SAWS.

HIKER LOST IN THE WOODS JH 03/27/13

A LOCAL HIKER DISAPPEARED IN THE WOODS OUTSIDE OF FORT BRAGG MONDAY AFTERNOON.

JAMIE ALFONSO AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS WENT HIKING IN THE WOODED AREA NEAR MILE MARKER 16 ON HIGHWAY 20 OUTSIDE OF FORT BRAGG. WHEN JAMIE DIDNT RETURN TO THE VEHICLE, THE FAMILY NOTIFIED THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT WHO THEN INITIATED A SEARCH. JAMIE WAS FINALLY LOCATED AT ABOUT 10:15 THE NEXT MORNING, AND WAS IN GOOD HEALTH AND SPIRITS, AFTER SPENDING THE NIGHT IN THE WOODS.

ACCORDING TO CHP, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE AND HIT AN EMBANKMENT. 71 YEAR OLD ANN ADAMS WAS TRAVELING WESTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 20 JUST BEFORE 2:30 PM YESTERDAY, WHEN, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HER PICKUP VEERED OFF THE ROAD AND LAUNCHED ABOUT 50 FEET OUT INTO THE LAKE. LUCERNE RESIDENT DOUG ARNOLD. WHO WAS DRIVING BEHIND HER, STOPPED AND JUMPED IN THE WATER TO TRY AND RESCUE ADAMS, BUT WAS UNABLE. HE THEN FLAGGED DOWN FRANK HAAS, WHO WAS DRIVING BY. HAAS CALLED 911, AS THE PICKUP QUICKLY SANK WITH ADAMS STILL INSIDE. A DEPUTY ARRIVED AND USED A SLEDGE HAMMER FROM HAASS WORK TRUCK TO BREAK OUT A WINDOW IN THE PICKUP AND EXTRICATE ADAMS. ARNOLD, HAAS, AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN, AND A FEW YOUNG BICYCLIST ALL ENTERED THE LAKE TO ASSIST THE DEPUTY IN RESCUING ADAMS, WHO WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH A POSSIBLE FRACTURED ARM, BUT OTHERWISE DOING OK.

LAKE COUNTY SUPERVISORS GIVE SHERIFF NO CONFIDENCE VOTE AND SEEK RESIGNATION JH 03/21/13

AT THIS WEEKS LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING, THE BOARD VOTED UNANIMOUSLY THAT ITS MEMBERS HAD NO CONFIDENCE IN THE COUNTYS SHERIFF, AND THEY WERE SEEKING HIS RESIGNATION.

CLEARLAKE POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR TWO MEN WHO ALLEGEDLY ROBBED A CHECK CASHING BUSINESS AT GUNPOINT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

THE ALLIED CASH ADVANCE STORE IN THE BURNS VALLEY MALL ON OLYMPIC DRIVE WAS ROBBED AT APPROXIMATELY 1:45 PM. THE TWO MEN ENTERED THE BUSINESS AND ORDERED THE STAFF AND A CUSTOMER TO THE GROUND AT GUNPOINT, BEFORE FLEEING WITH CASH. THE FIRST SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A BLACK MALE ADULT, ABOUT 6 FEET, 6 INCHES TALL WITH A THIN, SKINNY BUILD. THE SECOND SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A BLACK MALE ADULT, SHORTER THAN THE FIRST SUSPECT WITH A HEAVIER BUILD. BOTH ARE SAID TO HAVE BEEN WEARING BLACK CLOTHING WITH A HOODIE-TYPE SWEATSHIRT PULLED OVER THEIR FACES. UKIAH WOMAN IN DEPENDANT ADULT NEGLECT CASE DIES JH 03/20/13

THE UKIAH WOMAN, WHOSE BOYFRIEND AND CAREGIVER IS ACCUSED OF THE SEVERE NEGLECT THAT LED TO HER HOSPITALIZATION, HAS DIED.

THE 32 YEAR OLD VICTIM, WHO WAS HOSPITALIZED ON MARCH 7TH, WAS FOUND TO BE MALNOURISHED AND LYING IN HER OWN WASTE, AFTER AUTHORITIES SEARCHED HER HOME. HER BOYFRIEND AND STATE PAID CAREGIVER, 52 YEAR OLD THOMAS WINKLE, WAS ARRESTED FOR SEVERE NEGLECT THE DAY THE VICTIM WAS HOSPITALIZED. A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR BRANDISHING AN AXE NEAR A PLAYGROUND IN A LOCAL PARK.

30 YEAR OLD ROBERT WAYNE BELL WAS SEEN WAVING AN AXE AROUND WHILE CIRCLING THE CHILDRENS PLAY AREA AT RECREATION GROVE PARK SATURDAY MORNING AT APPROXIMATELY 10:30. POLICE WERE CALLED AND BELL WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON SUSPICION OF BRANDISHING A DEADLY WEAPON IN A THREATENING MANNER. WILLITS POLICE SEEK INPUT FROM OTHERS WHO WITNESSED THE INCIDENT. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF-CORONERS OFFICE HAS IDENTIFIED THE FORT BRAGG MAN WHO IS BELIEVED TO HAVE SHOT HIMSELF OUTSIDE A HOSPITAL SUNDAY MORNING.

AUTHORITIES RESPONDED TO THE MENDOCINO COAST DISTRICT HOSPITAL AT APPROXIMATELY 9:45 AM, WHEN THEY HEARD AN AMBULANCE BEING DISPATCHED THERE FOR A GUNSHOT VICTIM. WHILE EN ROUTE, THE POLICE WERE ALSO DISPATCHED TO THE HOSPITAL PARKING LOT FOR A REPORT OF A MAN WITH A GUN AND ONE SHOT FIRED. UPON ARRIVAL, POLICE FOUND 64 YEAR OLD THOMAS HENRY BURNAP WITH A BULLET WOUND IN THE BUSHES NEXT TO A VEHICLE WITH AN OPEN DOOR. THE GUN WAS ON THE GROUND NEAR HIM, AND A GUN CASE IN THE VEHICLE. BURNAP WAS ALIVE, BUT HOSPITAL STAFF WAS UNABLE TO SAVE HIM. AN INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THAT BURNAP CALLED 911 TO REPORT THAT HE WAS GOING TO SHOOT HIMSELF, AND WHERE HIS BODY COULD BE FOUND.

NAKED MAN TASED AFTER LEAVING THE HOSPITAL JH 03/20/13

A NAKED MAN WHO FLED THE CUSTODY OF MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS AT UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WAS TASED AS AUTHORITIES ATTEMPTED TO SUBDUE HIM.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE 39-YEAR-OLD MALE SUSPECT HAD BEEN DETAINED EARLIER IN THE DAY AS A THREAT TO OTHERS DUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION, AS HE HAD APPARENTLY THREATENED TO KILL SOMEBODY. ABOUT 6:50 PM, THE SUSPECT FORCEFULLY PULLED THE IV FROM HIMSELF, AS WELL AS A CATHETER, AND THEN RAN FROM THE FACILITY. POLICE LOCATED THE NAKED MAN ON PERKINS STREET AND TRIED TO TALK TO HIM, BUT HE CONTINUED WALKING. THE OFFICER THEN TASED THE MAN, WHO FELL AND THEN BEGAN REMOVING THE TASER PROBES AS HE TRIED TO GET BACK UP. BACKUP LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVED AS THE MAN TRIED TO FLEE AGAIN. THE SUSPECT WAS TASED AGAIN BEFORE AUTHORITIES COULD WRESTLE HIM TO THE GROUND AND TAKE HIM INTO CUSTODY.
