FIRE DESTROYS MENDOCINO COAST HOME JH 03/11/13

A HOME ON THE MENDOCINO COAST WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE SATURDAY EVENING.

A NEIGHBOR REPORTED THE ALBION RIDGE HOME WAS ON FIRE AT APPROXIMATELY 6 PM. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED, THE HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED AND THREATENING A NEARBY STRUCTURE. VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS SAVED THE SECONDARY STRUCTURE AND EXTINGUISHED THE HOME USING WATER FROM A NEARBY POND. NO ONE WAS INJURED, AS THE HOUSE WAS AN UNOCCUPIED VACATION HOME FOR A FAMILY FROM OUT OF THE AREA.

FORT BRAGG POLICE SEEK HIT AND RUN SUSPECT JH 03/11/13

THE FORT BRAGG POLICE SEEK A HIT AND RUN SUSPECT.

40 YEAR OLD CYBELE ORNELAS WAS RIDING HER BICYCLE ACROSS PINE STREET LAST TUESDAY NIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 8:55 PM, WHEN A BLACK LATE MODEL CADILLAC CTS 4-DOOR TURNED LEFT FROM MAIN STREET AND HIT HER BIKE CAUSING HER TO BE THROWN TO THE GROUND WITH MINOR INJURIES. THE CADILLAC NEVER STOPPED, AND WAS LAST SEEN HEADED NORTH ON FRANKLIN STREET. THE COLLISION IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, AND THE FORT BRAGG POLICE REQUEST THAT ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE WITNESSED THE COLLISION OR SAW THE CADILLAC IN THE AREA AT THE TIME OF THE COLLISION, PLEASE CALL THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 961-2800.

ONE SUSPECT BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MULTIPLE BANK ROBBERIES JH 03/11/13

THE MAN WHO ROBBED THE TRI COUNTIES BANK IN MIDDLETOWN LAST THURSDAY IS BELIEVED TO BE THE SAME MAN WHO ROBBED THE WEST AMERICA BANK IN JANUARY.

ON JANUARY 27TH, A MAN WALKED INTO THE TRI COUNTIES BANK AND ASKED FOR CHANGE FOR A $100 BILL AND THEN LEFT. BANK EMPLOYEES CONTACT AUTHORITIES BECAUSE THEY FELT THAT THE MAN, WHO WAS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE, APPROXIMATELY 5 FOOT 9 INCHES TALL WITH A STOCKY BUILD, MAY HAVE BEEN THERE TO ROB THE BANK. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, A MAN MATCHING THE SAME DESCRIPTION ROBBED THE WEST AMERICA BANK A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY. WHEN THE TRI COUNTIES BANK WAS ROBBED LAST THURSDAY, THE SUSPECT AGAIN MATCHED THE SAME DESCRIPTION. ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE SUSPECT ARE NOW AVAILABLE, ON THE K-WINE NEWS FACEBOOK PAGE. MAN SUSPECTED IN KILLING HIS GRANDFATHER MAY PLEAD INSANITY

THE WILLITS MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING HIS GRANDFATHER MAY PLEAD INSANITY.

23 YEAR OLD KENNETH WILKINSON FACES A MURDER CHARGE FOR THE DEATH OF HIS 84 YEAR OLD GRANDFATHER, AND A SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCE THAT HE TORTURED THE MAN BY DRAGGING HIM BEHIND A PICKUP-TRUCK FOR NEARLY SIX MILES LAST MARCH. ACCORDING TO WILKINSONS PUBLIC DEFENDER, SHE IS WAITING TO MEET WITH A PSYCHIATRIST TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT TO ENTER A GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY PLEA. IF FOUND GUILTY, WILKINSON COULD BE SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE. THE TRIAL IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN MAY 6TH.

LOCAL MAN INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH JH 03/11/13

A LOCAL MAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A MOTORCYCLE CRASH RECENTLY.

DAN JOHNSON OF UKIAH HAD JUST FINISHED WORKING ON A MOTORCYCLE WHEN, DURING THE TEST RIDE, HE CRASHED FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. JOHNSON SUFFERED A MAJOR HEAD INJURY AND WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. HE HAD TO BE PUT INTO A MEDICALLY INDUCED COMA, WHERE HE HAS REMAINED FOR THE LAST WEEK. AFTER SEVERAL SURGERIES, JOHNSON REMAINS IN A COMA AND IN SERIOUS CONDITION. A BENEFIT DINNER IS CURRENTLY BEING PLANNED TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR HIS FAMILY AND MEDICAL COSTS. WILLITS BYPASS REMAINS STALLED OVER BIRDS JH 03/11/13

THE WILLITS BYPASS CONSTRUCTION REMAINS STALLED DUE TO BIRD MIGRATION.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE AND CAL TRANS HAVE YET TO REACH AN AGREEMENT OVER SPECIFIC PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED ALONG THE BYPASS ROUTE TO PROTECT NESTING BIRDS. THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE HAS RECEIVED A DRAFT OF THE REVISED BIRD PROTECTION AND SURVEY PROTOCOL FROM CAL TRANS AND IS STILL REVIEWING IT. KEY ISSUES INCLUDE TIMING OF THE SURVEYS IN RELATION TO PERFORMING THE WORK AND BUFFER ZONES AROUND ACTIVE NESTING SITES. THE LAWSUIT OVER THE BYPASS, PITTING SEVERAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS AGAINST CAL TRANS AND THE US ARMY CORP OF ENGINEERS ALSO CONTINUES. ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS, ALL PARTIES HAVE BEGUN MEDIATION AND WILL CONTINUE TO MEET OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

FUNDRAISING DRIVE FOR FIRE VICTIMS JH 03/11/13

THE EIGHT FAMILIES WHO LOST THEIR HOMES AND EVERYTHING INSIDE IN THE FIRCREST APARTMENT FIRE, ARE SETTLING INTO NEW PERMANENT HOUSING, AND PLOWSHARES IS HOLDING A FUNDING DRIVE.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS AT PLOWSHARES, THE DRIVE AIMS TO RAISE $50,000 TO REPLACE BOTH THE NECESSITIES AND THE CREATURE COMFORTS, INCLUDING FOOD, POTS AND PANS, BEDDING, FURNITURE AND WHATEVER ELSE IS NEEDED. ROAD WORK WILL CAUSE SOME DELAYS THIS WEEK.

PG&E WILL PERFORM UTILITY REPAIRS ON HIGHWAY 162 FROM JUST EAST OF EAST LANE ROAD TOMORROW FROM 8 AM TO 4 PM.

PG&E WILL ALSO PERFORM UTILITY REPAIRS ON HIGHWAY 20 FROM JUST WEST OF LITTLE LAKE ROAD TO FOREST STATION ROAD ON WEDNESDAY FROM 1 PM TO 4 PM.

ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT AT BOTH LOCATIONS WITH 5-MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.
