MAYHEM AND ELDER ABUSE JH 03/12/13

A FORT BRAGG WOMAN WAS ARRESTED OVER THE WEEKEND FOR CHARGES OF MAYHEM AND ELDER ABUSE.

AN UNIDENTIFIED ELDERLY FEMALE CALLED POLICE SATURDAY TO REPORT HER CARETAKER, 60-YEAR-OLD CHRISTINE TURNER, HAD BITTEN HER ON THE WRIST. THE VICTIM THEN FLED HER SOUTH HAROLD STREET HOME TO SEEK ASSISTANCE FROM A NEIGHBOR. AFTER AUTHORITIES SAW THE DISFIGURING WOUND, A WITNESS WAS CONTACTED WHO INDICATED THAT TURNER HAD ALSO BEEN VERBALLY ABUSIVE TOWARDS THE VICTIM, AND THAT THERE HAD BEEN PREVIOUS INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE WHERE TURNER WAS THE SUSPECT. TURNER, WHO DENIED THE CHARGES, WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

LAKE COUNTY NEWS REACHES SETTLEMENT WITH RIVERO JH 03/12/13

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REACHED A SETTLEMENT IN A DISCRIMINATION CASE AGAINST LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF FRANK RIVERO.

THE ONLINE NEWS WEB SITE CLAIMED IN A JANUARY SUIT THE SHERIFF RIVERO BLACKLISTED THEM FROM RECEIVING PRESS RELEASES AND OTHER PUBLIC INFORMATION, BECAUSE HE FELT THEIR REPORTING WAS BIASED AND INACCURATE. UNDER THE TERMS OF A STIPULATED JUDGMENT, RIVERO COULD BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OF COURT IF HIS AGENCY DOESNT FOLLOW STATE PUBLIC RECORDS LAWS. THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS HAS ALSO REQUESTED THAT THEIR ATTORNEY FEES BE PAID, WHICH WILL BE DECIDED BY A JUDGE AT A LATER DATE.

WILLITS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVES LAYOFFS JH 03/12/13

THE WILLITS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVED SEVERAL TEACHER LAYOFFS AT LAST WEEKS MEETING.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVED A PLAN TO ELIMINATE 14 POSITIONS AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. ELEVEN TEACHERS AND THREE CLASSIFIED STAFF WILL BE LET GO IN AN EFFORT TO CUT SPENDING. HOWEVER, THE WILLITS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET STILL PROJECTS A SHORTFALL OF AT LEAST $600,000 FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, PARTIALLY DUE TO DECLINING STUDENT ENROLLMENT.

FOOD WASTE COMPOSTING PILOT PROGRAM LAUNCHED JH 03/12/13

UKIAHS GARBAGE HAULER, C & S WASTE SOLUTIONS, HAS LAUNCHED A PILOT-COMPOSTING PROGRAM FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS FROM THE COMPANY, THEY HAVE INVITED 37 BUSINESSES TO PARTICIPATE, AND THREE HAVE ALREADY SIGNED UP. THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL HAD REQUESTED A FOOD COMPOSTING PROGRAM FROM THE COMPANY OVER A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, AND C & S WASTE SOLUTIONS SAID THEY WERE LOOKING INTO IT, BUT NEEDED A LOCATION FOR THE COMPOSTING. THE COMPANY THEN PURCHASED THE FORMER THOMAS PEAR SHEDS AND TRIED TO ACQUIRE THE PERMITS, BUT THEY WERE DENIED BY MENDOCINO COUNTY. HOWEVER, THE COMPANY ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO GET A PERMIT FOR THE COMPOSTING FACILITY IN LAKE COUNTY. A SPECIAL COMPOSTING TRUCK WILL NOW TRANSPORT THE WASTE TO A C & S WASTE SOLUTIONS FACILITY IN LAKEPORT.

DUI CAR CRASH CAUSES INJURY TO PASSENGER JH 03/12/13

A NICE MAN, SUSPECTED OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, CRASHED HIS CAR CAUSING INJURY TO HIMSELF AND HIS PASSENGER.

28-YEAR-OLD DANIEL EDWARD POE DROVE HIS CAR OFF THE SHOULDER OF HIGHWAY 20 JUST AFTER 2 AM SATURDAY MORNING, AND THE CAR OVERTURNED. POE SUSTAINED MODERATE INJURY, AND HIS PASSENGER, 31 YEAR OLD NICOLE VENTURA OF NICE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURY. BOTH WERE HOSPITALIZED, AND THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

TWO POLICE OFFICERS AND SUSPECT HOSPITALIZED FOLLOWING CHEMICAL SPILL JH 03/12/13

TWO CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS AND ONE SUSPECT WERE HOSPITALIZED LAST NIGHT AFTER A CHEMICAL SPILL.

NEIGHBORS REPORTED A FOUL ODOR COMING FROM A CLEARLAKE HOUSE WHERE AUTHORITIES HAD PREVIOUSLY RESPONDED TO A REPORTED METHAMPHETAMINE LAB JUST THREE WEEKS AGO. THE FIRST TWO OFFICERS TO ARRIVE WERE OVERCOME BY ODORS AND BECAME ILL. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, FIRE PERSONNEL THEN RESPONDED WITH PROTECTIVE BREATHING APPARATUSES. IT IS UNKNOWN WHAT CHEMICALS WERE SPILLED AND THE INCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

STRANGER TRIES TO TAKE A GUN FROM A CLOVERDALE MAN JH 03/12/13

A STRUGGLE OVER A HANDGUN BETWEEN TWO CLOVERDALE RESIDENTS, ENDED WITH THE GUN FIRING AND ONE MAN INJURED FROM THE STRUGGLE.

AT APPROXIMATELY 11:40 AM YESTERDAY MORNING, THE SUSPECT SHOWED UP IN THE FRONT YARD OF A WILSON ROAD HOME, ACTING PANICKED AND SAYING SOMEONE WAS TRYING TO KILL HIM. A RESIDENT OF THE HOME, WHO DIDNT RECOGNIZE THE MAN IN HIS YARD, CALLED AUTHORITIES. THE RESIDENT THEN GRABBED A HANDGUN AND ATTEMPTED TO HELP THE MAN LOOK FOR THE ALLEGED ASSAILANT. THE SUSPECT THEN GRABBED THE GUN AND A STRUGGLE ENSUED. THE GUN WENT OFF, HOWEVER, NO ONE WAS SHOT, THE SLIDE ON THE GUN CAME BACK AND GOUGED THE SUSPECT, WHO WAS THEN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND TAKEN FOR A MEDICAL AND MENTAL EVALUATION. THE INCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

ROAD WORK WILL CAUSE DELAYS TODAY JH 03/12/13

UTILITY REPAIRS WILL CAUSE SOME DELAYS TODAY .

PG&E WILL PERFORM UTILITY REPAIRS ON HIGHWAY 162 FROM JUST EAST OF EAST LANE ROAD TODAY FROM 8 AM TO 4 PM.

PG&E WILL ALSO PERFORM UTILITY REPAIRS ON HIGHWAY 20 FROM JUST WEST OF LITTLE LAKE ROAD TO FOREST STATION ROAD TOMORROW FROM 1 PM TO 4 PM.

ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT AT BOTH LOCATIONS WITH 5-MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.
