ASSAULT AND ROBBERY IN BROOKTRAILS JH 03/14/13

TWO MEN FORCED ENTRY INTO A BROOKTRAILS HOME AND ASSAULTED THE RESIDENTS MONDAY NIGHT.

48 YEAR OLD SAMPSON SMITH AND 34 YEAR OLD VAN SLAGLE KICKED IN THE FRONT DOOR OF A HOME AND BEGAN PUNCHING 39 YEAR OLD ORION STRONG AND 54 YEAR OLD SYLVIA SMITH, WHILE DEMANDING MONEY. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, STRONG OWED SAMPSON SMITH MONEY DUE TO A PREVIOUS LOAN. SAMPSON SMITH AND VAN SLAGLE THEN TOOK A BOTTLE OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION FROM THE HOME AND FLED IN A VEHICLE. AUTHORITIES LOCATED THE VEHICLE AND BOTH SUSPECTS A SHORT TIME LATER, AND SAMPSON SMITH AND SLAGLE WERE BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

CHEMICAL SPILL OVER GOLD JH 03/14/13

A MONDAY NIGHT CHEMICAL SPILL IN CLEARLAKE WAS NOT DRUG RELATED, BUT RATHER AN EFFORT TO CLAIM GOLD.

TWO CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS AND ONE SUSPECT WERE HOSPITALIZED AFTER A CHEMICAL SPILL AT A HOUSE WHERE AUTHORITIES HAD PREVIOUSLY RESPONDED TO A REPORTED METHAMPHETAMINE LAB JUST THREE WEEKS AGO. HOWEVER, THE CHEMICALS WERE NOT RELATED TO THE MANUFACTURING OF METH. INSTEAD, A RELATIVE OF THE MAN ARRESTED FOR THE ALLEGED METH LAB, WAS STRIPPING DOWN ELECTRONICS TO RETRIEVE TINY AMOUNTS OF GOLD. THE TOXIC CHEMICALS WERE NEUTRALIZED AND CLEANED UP WITHIN A FEW HOURS.

LAKE COUNTY BOS DISCUSS REQUESTING SHERIFFS RESIGNATION

THE INCREASING TENSIONS BETWEEN THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND SHERIFF FRANK RIVERO HAVE REACHED A TIPPING POINT.

TWO SUPERVISORS HAVE REQUESTED THEIR COLLEAGUES ISSUE A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN SHERIFF RIVERO AND ASK FOR HIS RESIGNATION.

ACCORDING TO THE SUPERVISORS, THE PUBLIC IS ASKING FOR THIS, AND THEY ARE JUST HONORING THE WISHES OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS. THIS ALL TIES TO A DA INVESTIGATION THAT FOUND THAT RIVERO HAD LIED DURING AN INVESTIGATION OF A SHOOTING HE WAS INVOLVED IN WHEN HE WAS STILL A DEPUTY. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, YESTERDAY, RIVERO VOWED TO SERVE OUT THE DURATION OF HIS TERM, WHICH EXPIRES IN JANUARY 2015. THE DISCUSSION ON THE NO-CONFIDENCE VOTE AND RESIGNATION REQUEST IS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT TUESDAY AT 10 AM AT THE LAKE COUNTY COURT HOUSE.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING COMMENTS ON THE DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT FOR A PROPOSED COSTCO STORE IN UKIAH IS APPROACHING.

ACCORDING TO PLANS SUBMIT TO THE CITY, THE WAREHOUSE STORE AND GAS STATION WILL BE ON AIRPORT PARK BOULEVARD, SOUTH OF THE KEN FOWLER AUTO CENTER. TRUCK FIRE IN LOWER LAKE SCORCHES ANOTHER VEHICLE JH 03/14/13

A TRUCK WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED AFTER IT CAUGHT FIRE IN A LOWER LAKE PARKING LOT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

THE VEHICLES OWNER UNSUCCESSFULLY ATTEMPTED TO PUT OUT THE BLAZE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. FIREFIGHTERS CONTAINED THE FLAMES IN JUST MINUTES, BUT ONLY AFTER IT CAUSED MODERATE DAMAGE TO A VEHICLE PARKED NEXT TO IT. THE FIRE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED DUE TO FAULTY WIRING; HOWEVER, THE INCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

TEACHERS AGREEMENT A STEP CLOSER TO IMPLEMENTATION

AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE UKIAH TEACHERS ASSOCIATION AND THE UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO IMPLEMENTATION.

LAST MONTH, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION REACHED AN AGREEMENT AFTER THE DISTRICT OFFERED TO USE ITS AVAILABLE RESERVES TO RAISE TEACHERS SALARIES AND OFFER RETIREMENT INCENTIVES. HOWEVER, FOR THE NUMBERS TO WORK OUT, THE DISTRICT NEEDED AT LEAST 15 TEACHERS TO RETIRE. IT WAS ANNOUNCED TUESDAY, THAT 21 TEACHERS HAVE AGREED TO ACCEPT THE RETIREMENT PACKAGE. THE AGREEMENT STILL NEEDS APPROVAL FROM THE MENDOCINO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION, BEFORE IT GOES BACK TO THE UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR FINAL APPROVAL.

EARTHQUAKE SHAKES THE GEYSERS JH 03/14/13

A GOOD SIZED EARTHQUAKE SHOOK LAKE COUNTY EARLY THIS MORNING AND COULD BE FELT AS FAR AWAY AS SAN FRANCISCO.

ACCORDING TO THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 2:09 THIS MORNING CENTERED JUST 2 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE GEYSERS AT A DEPTH OF ONLY 1.2 MILES. THE TEMBLOR REGISTERED A 4.6 MAGNITUDE AND WAS FOLLOWED BY MORE THAN A DOZEN AFTERSHOCKS.

LAKEPORT PLANNING COMMISSION GETS UPDATE ON POT ORDINANCE

THE LAKEPORT PLANNING COMMISSION RECEIVED UPDATES THIS WEEK ON THE MEDICAL MARIJUANA CULTIVATION ORDINANCE THAT IS CURRENTLY WORKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE COMMITTEE STAGE.

COUNTY OFFICIALS ANTICIPATE AT LEAST TWO MORE MEETINGS OF THE MARIJUANA CULTIVATION COMMITTEE BEFORE THE ORDINANCE IS FORMALLY PRESENTED TO THE PLANNING COMMISSION. THE MARIJUANA COMMITTEE PLANS ON RECEIVING PUBLIC COMMENT AT ITS NEXT MEETING ON MARCH 20TH AT 4 PM AT CITY HALL.
