AUTHORITIES SEEK PUBLICS HELP IN SUSPICIOUS HOUSE FIRE JH 03/15/13

AUTHORITIES ARE ASKING FOR THE PUBLICS HELP IN THE ONGOING INVESTIGATION OF AN ALBION HOUSE FIRE THAT IS CONSIDERED SUSPICIOUS.

THE RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE ON ALBION RIDGE ROAD WAS REPORTED AT 6 PM ON MARCH 9TH, AS I REPORTED EARLIER IN THE WEEK. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE HOUSE WAS VACANT AND WITHOUT ELECTRICAL SERVICE AND CAL FIRE AND THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE A CAUSE. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION THAT WOULD AID IN THE INVESTIGATION IS URGED TO CONTACT DEPUTY JONATHAN MARTIN AT 961-2421.

EARTHQUAKE DOWNGRADED AND LARGE AFTERSHOCKS REPORTED

THE EARTHQUAKE THAT SHOOK THE GEYSERS AND COBB AREA EARLY YESTERDAY WAS DOWNGRADED AND TWO SIZABLE AFTERSHOCKS HAVE BEEN REPORTED.

THE FIRST QUAKE STRUCK AT 2:09 AM YESTERDAY AND WAS ORIGINALLY REPORTED BY THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TO REGISTER A 4.6 MAGNITUDE. HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN DOWNGRADED TO A 4.5. TWO IMMEDIATE AFTERSHOCKS FOLLOWED, THE FIRST AT 2:10 REGISTERING A 3.9 MAGNITUDE, AND ANOTHER JUST SECONDS LATER REGISTERING A 3.4 MAGNITUDE. THE THREE MODERATE SIZED TEMBLORS WERE THEN FOLLOWED BY OVER A DOZEN SMALLER AFTERSHOCKS OVER THE NEXT HOUR AND A HALF, RANGING FROM 1.0 TO 2.7 IN MAGNITUDE.

LAKE COUNTY MAN WEIGHS PLEA DEAL IN FRATRICIDE CASE JH 03/15/13

A LAKE COUNTY MAN FACING TWO COUNTS OF VEHICULAR MAN SLAUGHTER AND SEVERAL OTHER CHARGES, CONSIDERS A PLEA DEAL.

27 YEAR OLD DYLAN EUGENE WATERS WAS CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS BROTHER AND ANOTHER MAN IN A HIGHWAY 29 CRASH LAST JULY AFTER DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED. WATERS HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY IN THIS CASE, AS WELL AS SEVERAL OTHER CRIMES DURING THE WEEKS BEFORE AND AFTER THE ACCIDENT. WATERS ALSO FACES CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH AN ASSAULT, A HOME INVASION, AND A HIGH SPEED CHASE. AUTHORITIES WOULD NOT GIVE DETAILS OF THE PLEA DEAL, BUT SAY IT WOULD RESOLVE ALL OF WATERS PENDING CASES.

BATTLE OVER WILLITS BYPASS HEATS UP JH 03/15/13

THE BATTLE OVER THE WILLITS BYPASS IS HEATING UP, AS ACTIVISTS SAT DOWN IN FRONT OF MOVING EQUIPMENT WEDNESDAY MORNING AND CALLED CAL-TIP TO REPORT VIOLATIONS OF THE MIGRATORY BIRD ACT.

THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME SINCE JANUARY 28, THAT ACTIVISTS HAVE STOPPED WORK ON THE BYPASS PROJECT THAT WILL ROUTE HIGHWAY 101 AROUND DOWNTOWN WILLITS. EMPLOYEES FROM CAL TRANS, ARROW FENCING COMPANY AND THEIR CONSULTING BIOLOGIST WALKED AHEAD OF THE EQUIPMENT LOOKING FOR BIRD NESTS TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE MIGRATORY BIRD ACT, AND SAID THEY HAD APPROVAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE TO DO SO. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, ACTIVISTS REFUSE TO ALLOW CONSTRUCTION EFFORTS TO CONTINUE UNTIL ALL PARTIES INVOLVED SIT DOWN WITH SENATOR NOREEN EVENS, WHO HAS VOICED CONCERNS OVER THE PROJECT. AFTER OFFICIALS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE WERE CONTACTED, THEY CONFIRMED THAT CAL TRANS WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO CONTINUE FENCING IN THE WORK SITE AREA, DESPITE BEING UNDER INVESTIGATION AND STILL IN THE PROCESS OF REVISING THEIR PROTOCOLS FOR BIRD SURVEYS.

TRAFFIC DELAYS TODAY AND TOMORROW JH 03/15/13

A COUPLE OF TRAFFIC DELAYS ARE EXPECTED TODAY AND TOMORROW.

CAL TRANS WILL PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON HIGHWAY 101 JUST SOUTH OF OUTLET CREEK BRIDGE FROM 8:30 AM TO 3 PM TODAY. ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT WITH 5-MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF FORT BRAGG WILL HOLD THEIR ANNUAL WHALE RUN AND WALK RACE TOMORROW BETWEEN REDWOOD AVENUE AND LAUREL AVENUE FROM 7 AM TO 11 AM. TRAFFIC WILL BE RESTRICTED TO ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. MOTORISTS MAY EXPERIENCE MINOR TRAFFIC SLOWDOWNS.

LAKE COUNTY WINE ALLIANCE DONATES TO MUSIC PROGRAM

THE LAKE COUNTY WINE ALLIANCE RECENTLY ISSUED A $2,500 GRANT TO THE CLEAR LAKE PERFORMING ARTS YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM TO OFFER NO-COST VIOLIN LESSONS.

THE FREE PROGRAM HAS HAD SUCH A LARGE RESPONSE THAT THE ORGANIZATION IS EXPLORING EXPANDING TO OTHER STRING INSTRUMENTS. HOWEVER, THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM HAS ALSO LED TO A SHORTAGE OF FUNDING FOR MORE TEACHERS AND INSTRUMENTS. PEOPLE WISHING TO LEND SUPPORT TO THIS POPULAR PROGRAM, EITHER WITH FINANCIAL DONATIONS OR INSTRUMENTS, MAY CONTACT THE CLEAR LAKE PERFORMING ARTS AT 279-4336.

TWO MENDOCINO COAST EDUCATORS WERE RECENTLY HONORED AT THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOLMASTERS CLUB.

THE PRINCIPLE OF ARENA UNION ELEMENTARY, PAULA PATTERSON, IS THIS YEARS MENDOCINO COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR. AND SCIENCE TEACHER TOBIN HAHN, OF MENDOCINO HIGH SCHOOL, IS THIS YEARS MENDOCINO COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR. SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1893, THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOLMASTERS CLUB HAS RECOGNIZED AND HONORED OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH PAULA PATTERSON AND TOBIN HAHN.

MENDO COUNTY SCHOOLS TO HELP STUDENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES JH 03/15/13

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION IS MOBILIZING TO HELP STUDENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

ACCORDING TO THE US SURGEON GENERAL, ONE OUT OF EVERY FIVE KIDS WILL EXPERIENCE A SIGNIFICANT MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM AT SOME POINT DURING THEIR EDUCATION YEARS. THE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATIONS STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE IS ATTEMPTING TO COMPILE A RESOURCE WHERE SCHOOL PERSONNEL CAN EASILY ACCESS TREATMENT SERVICES AND RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS IN NEED OF THEM. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THROUGH EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND EARLY PREVENTION STRATEGIES, EDUCATORS CAN HELP THE CHILDREN OF MENDOCINO COUNTY MOVE MORE EFFECTIVELY TOWARDS MENTAL WELLNESS.
