POLICE SEEK ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECTS JH 03/20/13

CLEARLAKE POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR TWO MEN WHO ALLEGEDLY ROBBED A CHECK CASHING BUSINESS AT GUNPOINT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

THE ALLIED CASH ADVANCE STORE IN THE BURNS VALLEY MALL ON OLYMPIC DRIVE WAS ROBBED AT APPROXIMATELY 1:45 PM. THE TWO MEN ENTERED THE BUSINESS AND ORDERED THE STAFF AND A CUSTOMER TO THE GROUND AT GUNPOINT, BEFORE FLEEING WITH CASH. THE FIRST SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A BLACK MALE ADULT, ABOUT 6 FEET, 6 INCHES TALL WITH A THIN, SKINNY BUILD. THE SECOND SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A BLACK MALE ADULT, SHORTER THAN THE FIRST SUSPECT WITH A HEAVIER BUILD. BOTH ARE SAID TO HAVE BEEN WEARING BLACK CLOTHING WITH A HOODIE-TYPE SWEATSHIRT PULLED OVER THEIR FACES. ACCORDING TO POLICE, THE SUSPECTS VEHICLE MAY BE A WHITE TWO-DOOR TOYOTA SOLARA WITH GOLD COLORED LETTERS ON THE REAR. THESE SUSPECTS ARE CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ROBBERY OR POSSIBLE SUSPECTS SHOULD CONTACT OFFICER WINSLOW AT 994-8251. CALLERS MAY REMAIN ANONYMOUS.

UKIAH WOMAN IN DEPENDANT ADULT NEGLECT CASE DIES JH 03/20/13

THE UKIAH WOMAN, WHOSE BOYFRIEND AND CAREGIVER IS ACCUSED OF THE SEVERE NEGLECT THAT LED TO HER HOSPITALIZATION, HAS DIED.

THE 32 YEAR OLD VICTIM, WHO WAS HOSPITALIZED ON MARCH 7TH, WAS FOUND TO BE MALNOURISHED AND LYING IN HER OWN WASTE, AFTER AUTHORITIES SEARCHED HER HOME. HER BOYFRIEND AND STATE PAID CAREGIVER, 52 YEAR OLD THOMAS WINKLE, WAS ARRESTED FOR SEVERE NEGLECT THE DAY THE VICTIM WAS HOSPITALIZED. AN AUTOPSY WILL BE PERFORMED TO SEE IF ADDITIONAL CHARGES WILL BE SOUGHT AGAINST WINKLE.

MAN BRANDISHING AXE IN WILLITS PARK JH 03/20/13

A WILLITS MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR BRANDISHING AN AXE NEAR A PLAYGROUND IN A LOCAL PARK.

30 YEAR OLD ROBERT WAYNE BELL WAS SEEN WAVING AN AXE AROUND WHILE CIRCLING THE CHILDRENS PLAY AREA AT RECREATION GROVE PARK SATURDAY MORNING AT APPROXIMATELY 10:30. POLICE WERE CALLED AND BELL WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON SUSPICION OF BRANDISHING A DEADLY WEAPON IN A THREATENING MANNER. WILLITS POLICE SEEK INPUT FROM OTHERS WHO WITNESSED THE INCIDENT. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL THE WILLITS POLICE AT 459-6122.

MAN WHO SHOT HIMSELF OUTSIDE HOSPITAL IDENTIFIED JH 03/20/13

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF-CORONERS OFFICE HAS IDENTIFIED THE FORT BRAGG MAN WHO IS BELIEVED TO HAVE SHOT HIMSELF OUTSIDE A HOSPITAL SUNDAY MORNING.

AUTHORITIES RESPONDED TO THE MENDOCINO COAST DISTRICT HOSPITAL AT APPROXIMATELY 9:45 AM, WHEN THEY HEARD AN AMBULANCE BEING DISPATCHED THERE FOR A GUNSHOT VICTIM. WHILE EN ROUTE, THE POLICE WERE ALSO DISPATCHED TO THE HOSPITAL PARKING LOT FOR A REPORT OF A MAN WITH A GUN AND ONE SHOT FIRED. UPON ARRIVAL, POLICE FOUND 64 YEAR OLD THOMAS HENRY BURNAP WITH A BULLET WOUND IN THE BUSHES NEXT TO A VEHICLE WITH AN OPEN DOOR. THE GUN WAS ON THE GROUND NEAR HIM, AND A GUN CASE IN THE VEHICLE. BURNAP WAS ALIVE, BUT HOSPITAL STAFF WAS UNABLE TO SAVE HIM. AN INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THAT BURNAP CALLED 911 TO REPORT THAT HE WAS GOING TO SHOOT HIMSELF, AND WHERE HIS BODY COULD BE FOUND.

ROAD WORK TODAY JH 03/19/13

ROAD WORK WILL CAUSE SOME MINOR DELAYS TODAY.

THE CITY OF WILLITS WILL PERFORM ROAD WORK ON HUMBOLDT AND MADDEN STREETS TODAY. THE STREETS WILL NOT BE CLOSED SIMULTANEOUSLY. CLOSURES WILL BE ISOLATED TO THE AREAS OF WORK AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. HOWEVER, THE CITY ADVISES AVOIDING THESE STREETS WHILE THE WORK IS BEING DONE.

UNION WORKERS AND OTHER TO PICKET IN SUPPORT OF WILLITS BYPASS PROJECT JH 03/20/13

UNIONS, CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AND OTHER WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN A START THE BYPASS PICKET THIS FRIDAY.

THE EVENT WILL START WITH A RALLY IN DOWNTOWN WILLITS FOLLOWED BY A MARCH TO DEMAND THAT CONSTRUCTION OF THE BYPASS BE ALLOWED TO START. ACCORDING TO A PRESS RELEASE BY THE PICKETERS, THEIR MESSAGE IS SIMPLE, STOP COSTING TAXPAYERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS A DAY AND LET THE UNEMPLOYED WORKERS DO THEIR JOBS. THE GROUP WILL BE ASKING CAL TRANS AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT TO REMOVE THE UNLAWFUL TRESPASSERS AND ALLOW CAL TRANS TO SECURE THE JOB SITE. THE GROUP BEHIND THIS EVENT WANTS TO REMIND THE COMMUNITY, THAT THIS PROJECT WILL NOT ONLY INJECT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS INTO OUR COMMUNITY, BUT IT FIXES A HUGE TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION ISSUE FOR THE WHOLE NORTH COAST REGION. IT WILL ALSO RECLASSIFY OVER 2,000 ACRES OF PREVIOUSLY UNPROTECTED LAND THAT WILL BE LABELED OPEN SPACE AND PROTECTED FOREVER. THE RALLY BEGINS AT 11 AM THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 22ND.

ASSEMBLY BILL MAY ALLOW CITY OF UKIAH TO USE BOND PROCEEDS

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER AT TONIGHTS MEETING, SUPPORTING A STATE ASSEMBLY BILL THAT MIGHT ALLOW THE CITY TO USE THE PROCEEDS FROM BONDS SOLD BY ITS FORMER REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY IN 2011.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE HAS SO FAR DENIED PAYMENT ON $6.2 MILLION WORTH OF CONTRACTS FROM THE FORMER AGENCY AS NOT ENFORCEABLE OBLIGATIONS. THAT MEANS THE CITY CANNOT USE PART OF THAT MONEY FOR TRAFFIC MITIGATIONS THAT ARE PART OF THE DEAL TO BRING A COSTCO STORE TO AIRPORT PARK BOULEVARD. THE COUNCIL MEETING BEGINS AT 6 PM IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS ON SEMINARY AVENUE.

NAKED MAN TASED AFTER LEAVING THE HOSPITAL JH 03/20/13

A NAKED MAN WHO FLED THE CUSTODY OF MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS AT UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WAS TASED AS AUTHORITIES ATTEMPTED TO SUBDUE HIM.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE 39-YEAR-OLD MALE SUSPECT HAD BEEN DETAINED EARLIER IN THE DAY AS A THREAT TO OTHERS DUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION, AS HE HAD APPARENTLY THREATENED TO KILL SOMEBODY. ABOUT 6:50 PM, THE SUSPECT FORCEFULLY PULLED THE IV FROM HIMSELF, AS WELL AS A CATHETER, AND THEN RAN FROM THE FACILITY. POLICE LOCATED THE NAKED MAN ON PERKINS STREET AND TRIED TO TALK TO HIM, BUT HE CONTINUED WALKING. THE OFFICER THEN TASED THE MAN, WHO FELL AND THEN BEGAN REMOVING THE TASER PROBES AS HE TRIED TO GET BACK UP. BACKUP LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVED AS THE MAN TRIED TO FLEE AGAIN. THE SUSPECT WAS TASED AGAIN BEFORE AUTHORITIES COULD WRESTLE HIM TO THE GROUND AND TAKE HIM INTO CUSTODY.
