WORK ON THE HIGHWAY 101 BYPASS AROUND WILLITS MOVES FORWARD, AS PROTESTERS CONTINUE TO MONITOR EVERY STEP OF THE PROJECT.

THE FIRST PILE WAS POUNDED INTO PLACE TUESDAY MORNING AS PROTESTERS LINED HEARST-WILLITS ROAD HOLDING SIGNS AGAINST THE BYPASS PROJECT. TWO WICK DRAIN STICHERS ALSO BEGAN INSTALLING THE 4 INCH WIDE BY 1/8 INCH THICK WICK DRAINS TO DEPTH OF ABOUT 80 FEET. THE DRAINS DRAW ALL THE WATER FROM THE GROUND AROUND THEM ALLOWING THE EARTH TO BE COMPACTED AND SOLID ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE BYPASS STRUCTURE. THE DRAINS ESSENTIALLY CREATE A LARGE UNDERGROUND DAM TO KEEP THE NEW HIGHWAY FROM SINKING INTO THE WETLANDS, AND THESE DRAINS ARE ONE OF THE GREATEST CONCERNS OF THE PROTESTERS, AS NO ONE REALLY KNOWS HOW IT WILL EFFECT THE WETLANDS, CREEKS AND NEARBY WELLS.
