FOLLOWING THE MID-JUNE DETECTION OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN MOSQUITO SAMPLES, THE EARLIEST APPEARANCE OF THE VIRUS LAKE COUNTY HAS EXPERIENCED, THE VIRUS HAS NOW BEEN DETECTED IN A SENTINEL CHICKEN.

THE VIRUS GENERALLY MAKES ITS FIRST APPEARANCE IN MOSQUITOES. ONCE FOUND IN CHICKENS AND OTHER ANIMALS, THE RISK FOR HUMAN INFECTION IS CONSIDERED TO BE INCREASED. ACCORDING TO LOCAL DOCTORS, THERE IS NO REASON FOR ALARM, HOWEVER, PERSONAL PROTECTION AGAINST MOSQUITO BITES IS THE CRUCIAL STEP NECESSARY TO PREVENT HUMAN CASES OF WEST NILE VIRUS. ELIMINATE ALL SOURCES OF STANDING WATER ON YOUR PROPERTY,

MAN ASSAULTS GIRLFRIEND FATHER JH 07/26/13

A SEA RANCH MAN IS ACCUSED OF BRANDISHING A FIREARM AND ASSAULTING HIS GIRLFRIENDS FATHER.

ON TUESDAY, 26 JUAN TORRES ALLEGEDLY ARRIVED AT THE HOME OF THE VICTIM, JACOBO CORIA-GARCIA, THE FATHER OF HIS GIRLFRIEND. THE VICTIM THEN ADVISED TORRES THAT HIS DAUGHTER WAS NOT THERE. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, TORRES THEN GRABBED A FIREARM AND MADE THREATS TO THE VICTIM WHILE POINTING THE FIREARM AT HIM. AT SOME POINT BEFORE LEAVING THE RESIDENCE, TORRES PUT DOWN THE FIREARM AND PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED THE VICTIM CAUSING MINOR INJURY. AUTHORITIES LOCATED TORRES OF WEDNESDAY IN THE GUALALA AREA, WHERE HE ADMITTED TO ASSAULTING THE VICTIM. TORRES WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

STABBING IN LUCERNE JH 07/26/13

A STABBING WAS REPORTED THURSDAY IN LUCERNE NEAR THE FOSTERS FREEZE RESTAURANT.

EMERGENCY PERSONNEL BEGAN PREPARING THE VICTIM FOR AIR TRANSPORT AS SOON AS THEY ARRIVED ON SCENE AND THE UNIDENTIFIED PERSON WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. ACCORDING TO BYSTANDERS, AUTHORITIES ARRESTED A POSSIBLE SUSPECT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE INCIDENT. MORE DETAILS WILL BE REPORTED AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE.

TWO MODERATE EARTHQUAKES IN THE LAST 24 HOURS JH 07/26/13

TWO MODERATE SIZED EARTHQUAKES SHOOK PORTIONS OF THE REDWOOD EMPIRE IN THE LAST 24 HOURS.

ACCORDING TO PRELIMINARY REPORTS FROM THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, THE FIRST QUAKE OCCURRED AT 3:36 PM THURSDAY JUST 4 MILES NORTH WEST OF THE GEYSERS AT A DEPTH OF 1.3 MILES. THE QUAKE REGISTERED A 3.0 MAGNITUDE.

THE SECOND QUAKE OCCURRED AT 12:32 THIS MORNING JUST 37 MILES SOUTH WEST OF FERNDALE AT A DEPTH OF 3.1 MILES. THAT QUAKE REGISTERED A 3.6 MAGNITUDE. NO DAMAGE WAS REPORTED NY EITHER OF THE TWO QUAKES.

ROAD WORK 07/26/13

CONTINUING ROAD WORK WILL CAUSE MINOR TRAFFIC DELAYS.

BRIDGE REHABILITATION WILL CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY 101 AT THE ASH CREEK BRIDGE. WORK WILL BE DONE AT NIGHT FROM 6 PM TO 7 AM WEEKDAYS.

METAL BEAM GUARDRAIL REPAIR WILL CONTINUE AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON HIGHWAY 128 FROM THE NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD TO THE ROBINSON CREEK BRIDGE. WORK WILL BE DONE FROM 7 AM TO 5 PM WEEKDAYS. ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT WITH 5-MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.

FORT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL ENDORSES MEASURE H JH 07/26/13

THE FORT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL HELD A SPECIAL MEETING THIS WEEK TO ADOPT A RESOLUTION ENDORSING MEASURE H, A BALLOT MEASURE TO KEEP FORT BRAGGS EXISTING HALF CENT SPECIAL SALES TAX.

THE PURPOSE OF THE TAX IS FOR STREET REPAIRS, AND MEASURE H WILL EXTEND THE TAX FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS. IT WILL ALSO EXPAND ITS PURPOSE TO INCLUDE REPAIRS TO FORT BRAGG ALLEYS. THE BALLOTS WILL BE MAILED TO FORT BRAGG RESIDENTS NEXT WEEK AND MUST BE RETURNED TO THE COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE BY AUGUST 27TH. THE CITYS STREET REPAIR SALES TAX HAS BEEN IN PLACE SINCE 2004. IT HAS ALLOWED THE CITY TO PERFORM MORE THAN $7 MILLION IN STREET REPAIRS OVER THE LAST NINE YEARS. THE TAX WILL EXPIRE ON DECEMBER 31, 2014 UNLESS MEASURE H IS APPROVED BY TWO-THIRDS OF THE VOTERS.

THE MENDOCINO COAST RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT AND THE CV STARR COMMUNITY CENTER IN FORT BRAGG HAVE EXCEEDED FINANCIAL EXPECTATIONS.

THE DISTRICT FINISHED THE 2012/2013 FISCAL YEAR IN THE BLACK, WHICH HASNT HAPPENED IN RECENT YEARS. OFFICIALS CREDITED REVENUES FROM THE CITY SALES TAX FOR THE IMPROVEMENT IN THE CV STARR CENTERS PERFORMANCE. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, REVENUE FAR EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS, WHILE THE OPERATING EXPENSE CAME IN UNDER PROJECTIONS, WHICH LEFT A SURPLUS IN REVENUE FOR THE YEAR. $300,000 OF THE SURPLUS REVENUE IS GOING INTO RESERVE ACCOUNTS TO PROTECT AGAINST NEGATIVE CYCLES IN THE ECONOMY. OFFICIALS ARE ALSO CONSIDERING EXTENDING THE POOLS SATURDAY HOURS TO ACCOMMODATE WORKERS WHO CANT GET TO THE FACILITY UNTIL LATER IN THE DAY.

CLEAR LAKE HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR NATHAN BARNETT COMPETED IN THE CROSS-COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKE NATIONALS ON THE EAST COAST THIS MONTH, AFTER FINISHING FOURTH OVERALL IN THE CALIFORNIA STATE HIGH SCHOOL MOUNTAIN BIKE CHAMPIONSHIPS EARLIER THIS YEAR. BARNETT PUT HIS SKILLS TO THE TEST IN CATEGORY 1, OR EXPERT LEVEL AGAINST 29 OTHER ASPIRING PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS LAST FRIDAY. DESPITE FALLING DURING HIS AGGRESSIVE PURSUIT OF ANOTHER RIDER, BARNETT WAS ABLE TO REMOUNT HIS BIKE AND CONTINUE ON TO AN IMPRESSIVE 10TH PLACE FINISH.
