THURSDAY CRASH LEAVES ONE DEAD, THREE INJURED AND ONE ARRESTED JH 07/19/13

A THURSDAY AFTERNOON CRASH NEAR KELSEYVILLE LEFT ONE DRIVER DEAD, THREE PEOPLE INJURED, AND THE SECOND DRIVER ARRESTED FOR DUI.

60 YEAR OLD JANET LEE MIX OF CLEARLAKE WAS DRIVING SOUTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 29 AT ABOUT 12:14 PM WHEN SHE ALLOWED HER VEHICLE TO DRIFT ONTO THE SHOULDER. AS SHE TRIED TO RETURN TO THE LANE, SHE OVER CORRECTED AND CROSSED THE HIGHWAY INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC COLLIDING HEAD ON WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE DRIVEN BY A 62 YEAR OLD WOMAN WITH TWO CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER WAS TRANSPORTED TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL, WHERE SHE DIED. A 7 YEAR OLD BOY IN THE VEHICLE WAS FLOWN TO US DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER, AND A 10 YEAR OLD GIRL WAS TAKEN TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL. MIX WAS TAKEN TO LAKESIDE HOSPITAL WITH MODERATE INJURIES WHERE SHE WAS ALSO ARRESTED FOR DUI.

NO ARRESTS YET IN ARSON FIRES JH 07/19/13

NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE AND NO SUSPECTS IDENTIFIED YET IN THE TWO ARSON FIRES STARTED LAST MONTH IN UKIAH.

ACCORDING TO FIRE OFFICIALS, THE FIRE ON FATHERS DAY, JUNE 16, ON CINDEE DRIVE THAT DESTROYED A TOWNHOME WAS STARTED BY AN ACCELERANT PUT ON A COUCH OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. AN ACCELERANT WAS ALSO IDENTIFIED AT THE SCENE OF THE FIRE SET THREE DAYS LATER AT THE VILLAGE CREEK APARTMENT COMPLEX THAT DAMAGED FOUR UNITS. AUTHORITIES ARE STILL WAITING FOR EVIDENCE TO BE PROCESSED, HOWEVER EVIDENCE LABS HAVE A SERIOUS BACKLOG, AND AUTHORITIES ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE RETURN OF EVIDENCE FROM THE FIR CREST FIRE ON MARCH 4TH. IN THAT CASE, A WOMAN WAS IDENTIFIED AS A SUSPECT, AND AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT RULED OUT THE POSSIBILITY THAT SHE MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OTHER TWO FIRES AS WELL.

THURSDAY NIGHT FIRE THREATENS HOMES AND POWER WAS OUT IN NICE

DAMAGED POWER EQUIPMENT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE CAUSED A WILDLAND FIRE THAT THREATENED HOMES ON THURSDAY NIGHT.

FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO THE REPORT OF A BLOWN TRANSFORMER AND DOWNED POWER LINES THAT STARTED A FIRE ON EAST HIGHWAY 20 AT CARSON STREET JUST AFTER 9:30 LAST NIGHT. ONE FIRE ENGINE EN ROUTE TO THE BLAZE WAS DISABLED IN A TRAFFIC COLLISION. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED IN THE ACCIDENT. PG&E REPORTED THAT ALMOST 1,600 CUSTOMERS LOST POWER DUE TO THE DOWNED LINES. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN THE BLAZE QUICKLY BEFORE IT REACHED SEVERAL NEARBY HOMES. THE FIRE CONSUMED ONLY ABOUT HALF AN ACRE.

ROAD WORK JH 07/19/13

ROAD WORK TODAY MAY CAUSE MINOR TRAFFIC DELAYS.

BRIDGE REHABILITATION WILL BE DONE ON HIGHWAY 101 FROM THE PIETA CREEK BRIDGE TO THE SOUTH JUNCTION OF HIGHWAYS 20 AND 101. WORK WILL BE DONE FROM 6 AM TODAY THROUGH 7 AM TOMORROW, SATURDAY, JULY 20TH. TRAFFIC WILL BE RESTRICTED TO ONE LANE AND MOTORISTS MAY EXPERIENCE MINOR SLOWDOWNS.

PAVING WILL BE DONE ON HIGHWAY 29 FROM JUST SOUTH OF THE JUNCTION OF HIGHWAYS 29 AND 53. THE WORK WILL BE ONGOING FROM 5 AM TO 4 PM WEEKDAYS. ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT WITH 5-MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.

UKIAHS PALACE HOTEL IS MAKING PROGRESS IN THE CLEANUP WITH DEBRIS BEING HAULED AWAY AND PLANS FOR CONDOMINIUMS AND HOTEL ROOMS ARE BEING DISCUSSED.

ACCORDING TO ELADIA LAINES, THE BUILDINGS OWNER WHO GIVES THE CITY COUNCIL A MONTHLY UPDATE ON PROGRESS, PHASE ONE REMOVAL HAS BEEN COMPLETED. A CERTIFIED ASBESTOS CONSULTANT IS NOW WORKING ON A WRITTEN PLAN FOR PHASE TWO, WHICH STILL NEEDS APPROVAL BY THE CITY AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT. ACCORDING TO A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE ARCHITECTURAL FIRM THAT LAINES IS WORKING WITH, THE INITIAL CONCEPTS FOR THE BUILDING INCLUDE ADDING 20 TO 25 CONDO UNITS AND 10 TO 15 BOUTIQUE HOTEL UNITS. THE CITY COUNCIL THEN VOTED TO DELAY ACTION ON A RESOLUTION THAT WOULD ALLOW THE CITY TO TAKE OVER ABATEMENT OF THE BUILDING.

FORT BRAGG RESIDENTS MAY SEE A NEW SHOPPING OUTLET OPEN SOON.

A COASTAL DEVELOPMENT PERMIT APPLICATION HAS BEEN SUBMIT TO USE A PORTION OF THE FORMER COUNTY SOCIAL SERVICES BUILDING ON SOUTH FRANKLIN FOR A DOLLAR TREE STORE. THE OWNER OF THE BUILDING IS NOW WAITING FOR APPROVAL BY THE CITY PLANNING COMMISSION.

TWO FIRES BREAK OUT NEAR ORR SPRINGS ROAD JH 07/19/13

UKIAH FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO TWO FIRES NEAR ORR SPRINGS THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

A VEGETATION FIRE BURNING BEHIND A WAREHOUSE AND THREATENING STRUCTURES WAS REPORTED IN THE 100 BLOCK OF ORR SPRINGS JUST BEFORE 4 PM. WHILE FIREFIGHTERS ATTACKED THE BLAZE, ANOTHER FIRE WAS SPOTTED ALONG THE SOUTHBOUND LANES OF HIGHWAY 101, ABOUT A QUARTER MILE NORTH OF THE FIRST FIRE. BOTH FIRES WERE QUICKLY UNDER CONTROL. CAUSE OF THE FIRES IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

AUTHORITIES SEARCH FOR LUCERNE MAN IN CONNECTION WITH THURSDAY STABBING JH 07/18/13

THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT IS LOOKING FOR A LUCERNE MAN WHO IS WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH A STABBING THURSDAY NIGHT.

THE UNIDENTIFIED STABBING VICTIM TOLD AUTHORITIES THAT JUAN CARLOS LOPEZ STABBED HIM IN THE LEFT SIDE AFTER HE TRIED TO BREAK UP AN ALTERCATION BETWEEN LOPEZ AND A FEMALE. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, LOPEZ THEN FLED THE SCENE AND THE VICTIM WAS FLOWN TO UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER IN CRITICAL CONDITION. THE VICTIM HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED AND WILL MAKE A FULL RECOVERY. THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING AND ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THIS CASE OR THE WHEREABOUTS OF JUAN CARLOS LOPEZ IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE AT 263-2690.

THURSDAY MORNING FIRE BURNS KELSEYVILLE HOME JH 07/18/13

AN EARLY MORNING FIRE IN KELSEYVILLE BURNED ONE HOME AND THREATENED OTHER NEARBY STRUCTURES.

BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED, AT ABOUT 2:15, THE HOME ON FAIRWAY DRIVE NEAR POINT LAKEVIEW ROAD WAS FULLY INVOLVED WITH POWER LINES TO THE HOME DOWN. FIREFIGHTERS REPORTED THAT STRUCTURES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE HOME WERE THREATENED, BUT THE BLAZE HAD NOT MOVED INTO NEARBY WILDLAND. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, ALL OCCUPANTS OF THE RESIDENCE WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE UNHARMED. FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE FLAMES CONTAINED BY 3:45 AM. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

DRIVER ARRESTED FOR DUI AFTER THREE VEHICLE CRASH JH 07/18/13

A LAKEPORT WOMAN WAS ARRESTED FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AFTER CAUSING A THREE VEHICLE COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 101.

30 YEAR OLD SHANNON WALTON WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON THE HIGHWAY, NEAR THE CAL FIRE STATION, WHEN SHE REAR ENDED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER DRIVEN BY JAMIE BAILEY OF WILLITS. BAILEY HAD SLOWED DOWN WITH OTHER TRAFFIC WHILE PASSING AN ACCIDENT IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANES. THE IMPACT OF WALTONS VEHICLE PUSHED BAILEYS VEHICLE INTO A THIRD CAR, DRIVEN BY 52 YEAR OLD STEVEN BURNS OF REDWOOD VALLEY. BURNS PASSENGER, 46-YEAR-OLD RENAE BLAKE WAS TAKEN TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WITH MINOR INJURIES. CHP WAS ALREADY ON SCENE FOR THE ACCIDENT IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANES, AND ARRESTED WALTON FOR DUI.

FIRE IN LOWER LAKE DESTROYS STRUCTURES AND DAMAGES UTILITIES

A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON FIRE IN LOWER LAKE DESTROYED SEVERAL STRUCTURES AND DAMAGED UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE CAUSING A POWER OUTAGE.

THE FIRE, ON THE CORNER OF JESSIE STREET AND HIGHWAY 53, STARTED SHORTLY BEFORE 2 PM AND BURNED JUST UNDER ONE ACRE. FLAMES DESTROYED THREE OUTBUILDINGS AND CAUSED MINIMAL DAMAGE TO TWO RESIDENCES. THERE WAS ALSO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE, WITH MEDIACOM, AT&T AND PG&E ON SITE REPAIRING THE DAMAGE AND TRYING TO RESTORE POWER. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUSPICIOUS.

BLM TEMPORARILY CLOSES TWO AREA FOR RALLY CAR RACE JH 07/18/13

THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT WILL TEMPORARILY CLOSE WALKER RIDGE ROAD AND THE SOUTH COW MOUNTAIN OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE AREA TO GENERAL RECREATION AND THROUGH TRAFFIC TO PROVIDE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY DURING THE MENDOCINO RALLY CAR RACE.

WALKER RIDGE ROAD IN THE INDIAN VALLEY RECREATION AREA WILL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY, JULY 20TH. NON-PARTICIPATING VEHICLES WILL BE ESCORTED THROUGH THE AREA WHEN RALLY CARS ARE NOT ON THE RACECOURSE. EXPECT DELAYS OF UP TO AN HOUR.

THE SOUTH COW MOUNTAIN OHV AREA WILL BE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC SATURDAY, JULY 20TH AND 21ST , BUT SPECTATORS WILL BE ALLOWED AT THE WESTSIDE STAGING AREA.

FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO A FIRE NEAR THE WILLITS CEMETERY ON SATURDAY.

THE BLAZE, BURNING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF HIGHWAY 20 WAS ROUGHLY 100 FEET 100 FEET WHEN FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. THANKS TO QUICK ACTION BY THE FIREFIGHTERS ON THE GROUND, AS WELL AS THE CAL FIRE HELITACK UNIT AND AN AIR TANKER DROP, THE FLAMES WERE DOUSED BEFORE THEY COULD SPREAD INTO HEAVIER BRUSH AND OTHER FUELS. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

WORK ON THE HIGHWAY 101 BYPASS AROUND WILLITS WILL CAUSE ROAD CLOSURES OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS.

EAST HILL ROAD WILL BE CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC FROM SANHEDRIN CIRCLE TO CEMETERY LANE, OFF AND ON FROM 7 AM TO 6 PM, MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY AND FROM 7 AM TO 3 PM ON FRIDAYS FROM TODAY THROUGH AUGUST 9TH. ADVANCE WARNING SIGNS WILL BE POSTED AT EITHER END OF THE CLOSURE. ALTERNATE ROUTES ARE CENTER VALLEY ROAD TO EITHER EAST VALLEY ROAD OR HEARST WILLITS ROAD OR COMMERCIAL STREET.

EARTHQUAKE RATTLES COBB JH 07/18/13

A MODERATE SIZED EARTHQUAKE SHOOK THE COBB AREA WEDNESDAY.

ACCORDING TO A PRELIMINARY REPORT FROM THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 6:16 PM JUST 4 MILES NORTHWEST OF THE GEYSERS AT A DEPTH OF 1.1 MILES. THE QUAKE REGISTERED A 3.3 MAGNITUDE. THE TEMBLOR WAS REPORTEDLY FELT AS FAR AWAY AS SAN RAFAEL. NO DAMAGE WAS REPORTED.

25 YEAR OLD HOMICIDE COLD CASE SOLVED JH 07/17/13

A 25 YEAR OLD HOMICIDE COLD CASE HAS BEEN SOLVED THROUGH THE JOINT EFFORTS OF THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE AND THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.

ON SEPTEMBER 10, 1988, A RESIDENT OF PEARL RANCH ROAD IN FORT BRAGG WAS WALKING THEIR DOG WHEN THEY DISCOVERED A BODY IN THE BUSHES. THE BODY WAS IDENTIFIED AS 20-YEAR-OLD GEORGINA PACHECO OF FORT BRAGG. PACHECO WAS REPORTED MISSING DAYS BEFORE, ON SEPTEMBER 4TH. SHE WAS LAST SEEN ON SEPTEMBER 1ST WHEN SHE WAS PICKED UP FROM WORK BY HER BROTHER-IN-LAW, 27 YEAR OLD ROBERT JAMES PARKS. AN AUTOPSY DETERMINED THAT PACHECO HAD DIED OF BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA TO THE HEAD AND STRANGULATION. EVIDENCE RECOVERED ALLOWED AUTHORITIES TO DETERMINE A BLOOD TYPE OF THE SUSPECT, BUT THE TECHNOLOGY TO IDENTIFY PEOPLE BASED ON DNA DID NOT EXIST YET. BY 2005, THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY DNA RECOVERED FROM PACHECO AT AUTOPSY, BUT WAS ONLY ABLE TO DETERMINE IT WAS MALE SPERM. IN 2009 THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT REASSIGNED THE CASE, AND WHILE WORKING WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND THE LATEST DNA TECHNOLOGY, ON JULY 9TH OF THIS YEAR, THEY WERE ABLE TO POSITIVELY IDENTIFY PECHACOS BROTHER-IN-LAW, ROBERT JAMES PARKS AS THE SUSPECT. HOWEVER, PARKS, A COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN, HAD COMMIT SUICIDE IN JULY 1998, BY TYING HIMSELF TO HIS FISHING BOAT IN LONG BEACH HARBOR AND SINKING IT. THE MURDER INVESTIGATION OF GEORGINA PACHECO HAS NOW BEEN CLOSED.

FUGITIVE LEADS POLICE ON HIGH SPEED CHASE BEFORE CRASHING

A FUGITIVE LED POLICE ON A HIGH SPEED CHASE THAT ENDED WHEN THE SUSPECT WRAPPED THEIR SUV AROUND A TREE.

ACCORDING TO CLEARLAKE POLICE, THE SUSPECT REACHED SPEEDS EXCEEDING 100 MILES PER HOUR BEFORE THE VEHICLE SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AND HIT THE TREE. BOTH THE UNIDENTIFIED MAN AND WOMAN SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE, BUT WAS EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY BEFORE IT SPREAD TO SURROUNDING BRUSH AND TREES.

WOMAN REAR ENDS GRAVEL TRUCK ON 101 JH 07/17/13

A WOMAN DRIVING AN SUV WITH TWO CHILDREN INSIDE, REAR ENDED A SEMI ON HIGHWAY 101 CAUSING HER VEHICLE TO FLIP OVER INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

63-YEAR-OLD DEIDRE MOY OF SAN RAFAEL WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND JUST BEFORE 2:30 ON MONDAY WHEN SHE HIT A GRAVEL TRUCK DRIVEN BY 41 YEAR OLD BRYAN TODD OF POTTER VALLEY AS HE WAS WAITING TO TURN LEFT INTO THE HARRIS QUARRY. MOYS SUV OVERTURNED ONCE, THEN LANDED RIGHT SIDE UP IN THE SOUTH BOUND LANES. EVERYONE IN BOTH VEHICLES WAS WEARING THEIR SEATBELTS AND AMAZINGLY ENOUGH, NO ONE WAS INJURED.

THREE MENDOCINO COUNTY SCHOOLS RECEIVED FEDERAL GRANTS TO PROVIDE NUTRITIOUS FOOD TO STUDENTS WHILE ALSO SUPPORTING LOCAL FARMERS AND THE LOCAL ECONOMY.

ANDERSON VALLEY ELEMENTARY, NOKOMIS ELEMENTARY, AND OAK MANOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL EACH RECEIVE A SHARE OF MORE THAN $12.5 MILLION DOLLARS ALONG WITH THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-FOUR OTHER SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA. THESE FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PROGRAM GRANTS ARE AUTHORIZED BY THE NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH ACT AND PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FREE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AS SNACKS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.

WILLITS MURDERER UP FOR PAROLE JH 07/17/13

A WILLITS WOMAN CONVICTED OF KILLING HER BOYFRIEND IN 1997, HAS A PAROLE HEARING COMING UP.

ALISSA MARIE MOORE, WHO WITH THE HELP OF TWO FRIENDS, MURDERED HER BOYFRIEND, 19 YEAR OLD PAUL STEVEN RODRIGUEZ, BY SHOOTING HIM IN THE HEAD WITH A 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN AS LEANED OVER LOOKING INTO A CARS ENGINE COMPARTMENT. MOORE AND THE TWO ACCOMPLICES, WHO LURED RODRIGUEZ TO THE SITE WITH THE INTENTION OF KILLING HIM, THEN STUFFED HIS BODY IN THE TRUNK AND DUMPED HIS BODY IN BRUSH ON THE COAST WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED TWO WEEKS LATER. THE LANDSLIDES HAVE LEFT SEVEN LAKESIDE HEIGHTS HOMES UNINHABITABLE AND TRIGGERED VOLUNTARY EVACUATION NOTICES TO 10 OTHERS. A SMALL VEGETATION FIRE ALONG HIGHWAY 101 NEAR PLANT ROAD WAS EXTINGUISHED AS IT SPREAD TOWARDS SEVERAL HOMES.

THE FIRE, REPORTED AROUND 4:30 YESTERDAY, BURNED ABOUT HALF AN ACRE AND JUMPED THE RAILROAD TRACKS WHERE IT WAS STOPPED BY FIREFIGHTERS BEFORE IT REACHED HOMES. A WOMAN ROLLED HER SUV ON HIGHWAY 101 NEAR THE TALMAGE EXIT YESTERDAY.

26-YEAR-OLD VALERIE SCHMIDT OF CAMARILLO WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON 101 NORTH OF HIGHWAY 253 WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REGAIN CONTROL, SCHMIDT OVER CORRECTED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO OVERTURN AND COME TO REST ON ITS ROOF IN THE CENTER DIVIDE. SCHMIDT WAS TRANSPORTED TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WITH MINOR INJURIES.

A GRASS FIRE ALONG THE WEST SIDE OF HIGHWAY 101 JUST NORTH OF UKIAH, SPREAD TO A NEARBY HOME.

THE FIRE, BURNING NEAR THE PARDUCCI VINEYARDS AT ABOUT 2 PM YESTERDAY, WAS THOUGHT TO BE CONTAINED IN ABOUT AN HOUR. HOWEVER, AS FIREFIGHTERS WERE MOPPING UP, THE WIND CARRIED THE FLAMES NORTH TO A NEARBY SINGLE FAMILY HOME. THE BLAZE SPREAD ALONG THE BACK AND OUTSIDE OF THE HOME BEFORE MOVING INTO AN ATTIC VENT. FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE STRUCTURE FIRE UNDER CONTROL BY AROUND 3:30. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE FIRE.

DA: NO WRONGDOING BY DEPUTIES RELATING TO IN-CUSTODY DEATH

THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS CONCLUDED THAT THE DEATH OF A YOUNG MAN WHO HAD BEEN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY LAST YEAR WAS NOT DUE TO ANY WRONGDOING BY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES.

19-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH TRINY HOAGLEN DIED NOVEMBER 27TH, AFTER HIS MOTHER CALLED AUTHORITIES TO REPORT HE WAS TEARING UP HER HOME AND HAD CONSUMED A BOTTLE OF PILLS. DEPUTIES ARRESTED HOAGLEN ON AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT, BUT SHORTLY AFTER BEING HANDCUFFED, HOAGLEN BECAME UNSTEADY ON HIS FEET. DEPUTIES CALLED MEDICAL PERSONNEL AND REMOVED HOAGLENS HANDCUFFS. HOAGLEN FELL TO HIS KNEES, THEN FACEDOWN ON THE GROUND AND STOPPED BREATHING. ACCORDING TO THE DA, THE MEDICAL EXAMINER DETERMINED THAT HOAGLEN DIED OF A HEART ATTACK.

THE SKUNK TRAIN, WHICH IS CURRENTLY RUNNING A VERY LIMITED SERVICE DUE TO A TUNNEL COLLAPSE IN APRIL, IS MAKING PROGRESS ON THE NEEDED REPAIRS TO THE TUNNEL.

THE SIDES AND TOP OF THE TUNNEL ARE BEING PREPARED TO BE COVERED WITH SHOTCRETE TO STABILIZE THEM, BEFORE A LARGE BOULDER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TUNNEL CAN BE REMOVED. NO FIRM DATE HAS BEEN SET TO COMPLETE REPAIRS NEEDED TO RETURN THE RAILROAD TO FULL ACTIVE SERVICE. ALTHOUGH, SOME ONE HOUR TRAIN EXCURSIONS ARE STILL RUNNING OUT OF FORT BRAGG TO THE CLOSED TUNNEL AND BACK.

A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON FIRE DESTROYED A BARN AND HOME JUST NORTH OF LAKEPORT.

BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AT THE WESTLAKE ROAD HOME NEAR THE NICE-LUCERNE CUTOFF, THE HAY BARN WAS ALREADY ON THE GROUND AND THE HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. IN ADDITION TO THE TWO STRUCTURES, THE FIRE BURNED A QUARTER ACRE OF GRASS BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN THE BLAZE. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, AND IS BELIEVED TO BE ACCIDENTAL.

AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THAT 72-YEAR-OLD LARRY HUFFMAN WAS INCAPACITATED BY A MEDICAL CONDITION IN THE MOMENTS BEFORE HE CRASHED HIS PICKUP NEAR SUMMERS LANE. ACCORDING TO CHP, THE TRUCK HAD ONLY MINOR DAMAGE.

TWO CHILDREN DEAD AFTER HEAD-ON CAR CRASH JH 07/10/13

TWO CHILDREN DIED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 20 YESTERDAY.

AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAMES OF THE CHILDREN OR THE 38 YEAR OLD WOMAN DRIVING, ALL OF THEM FROM SHASTA. THE WOMAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED, AFTER ALLOWING HER VEHICLE TO CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. SHE WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE, 42-YEAR-OLD STEVEN CHAPLIN OF FINLEY, SUFFERED ONLY MINOR INJURIES.

POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS SAVE A MAN FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF POOL

THANKS TO THE QUICK RESPONSE OF A 10 YEAR OLD GIRL AND LAKEPORT POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS, A LAKEPORT MAN WAS RESUSCITATED YESTERDAY.

32 YEAR OLD SHAUN RUDD AND A 10 YEAR OLD GIRL WERE AT THE REGENCY INN MOTEL SWIMMING POOL WHEN THE GIRL NOTICED SOMETHING WAS WRONG AND RAN TO THE FRONT OFFICE WHERE EMPLOYEES CALLED 911. THE LAKEPORT POLICE OFFICER WHO ARRIVED FIRST JUMPED IN THE POOL AND PULLED RUDD FROM THE BOTTOM. LAKEPORT FIRE PERSONNEL REMOVED RUDD FROM THE WATER AND BEGAN LIFE SAVING EFFORTS. RUDD WAS TRANSPORTED TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL WHERE LIFE SAVING EFFORTS CONTINUED. RUDD, WHO BEGAN TO SHOW SIGNS OF A PULSE, WAS THEN AIR LIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS REPORTED TO BE IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

IT A HUNG JURY IN THE CASE OF A FORMER LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTY WHO IS ACCUSED OF HAVING SEX WITH A MINOR.

41 YEAR OLD DERIK DION NAVARRO ALLEGEDLY HAD SEX WITH A MINOR OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR, BEGINNING IN 2005, WHEN SHE WAS ONLY 14 YEARS OLD. THE ALLEGATIONS CAME TO THE ATTENTION OF SHERIFFS OFFICIALS IN 2007, AND FOLLOWING AN INTERNAL AFFAIRS INVESTIGATION, NAVARRO WAS FIRED AND ARRESTED. ACCORDING TO NAVARROS ATTORNEY, THE JURY HAS HUNG ON ALL 16 COUNTS.

ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS APPEAL SUPERIOR COURT RAIL AUTHORITY RULING JH 07/10/13

LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS MOVED TO APPEAL A MARIN COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT RULING TUESDAY, ARGUING THAT THE NORTH COAST RAIL AUTHORITY SHOULD HAVE TO COMPLY WITH STATE ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS TO REBUILD A PUBLICLY OWNED RAIL THROUGH FIVE COUNTIES ON THE NORTH COAST.

41-YEAR-OLD JOHN LOGAN ALLEGEDLY ENTERED THE RESIDENCE OF ELVIS SCARIONI AND COLLEEN RICE FRIDAY AFTERNOON, AND DEMANDED MONEY SCARIONI OWED HIM FOR WORK DONE ON SCARIONIS PROPERTY. AFTER SCARIONI INFORMED LOGAN THAT HE WAS PRESENTLY UNABLE TO PAY HIM, LOGAN DEMANDED KEYS TO SCARIONIS VEHICLE. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AT THE HOME IN THE 5800 BLOCK OF HIGHWAY 20 JUST AFTER 1:30 MONDAY MORNING, THE STRUCTURE WAS FULLY ENGULFED. THE HOME APPEARED TO BE UNOCCUPIED, AND THE BLAZE DAMAGED TWO OTHER NEARBY STRUCTURES. ACCORDING TO FIRE OFFICIALS, THERE WERE SUBJECTS SEEN WALKING AWAY FROM THE FIRE AREA, BUT DEPUTIES WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THEM. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IN REGARD TO THIS INCIDENT IS URGED TO CONTACT THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE.

THE CITIES OF UKIAH, WILLITS AND FORT BRAGG ARE SUING MENDOCINO COUNTY AND AUDITOR-CONTROLLER MEREDITH FORD FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS THEY CLAIM THEY WERE OVERCHARGED IN FEES FOR ADMINISTERING THE CITYS PROPERTY TAXES.

A FORT BRAGG MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR VANDALISM AND ELDER ABUSE OF HIS OWN FATHER.

19 YEAR OLD MADISON HAVENS RETURNED TO HIS PARENTS HOME ON THE FOURTH OF JULY INTOXICATED AND BECAME IRATE WHEN HIS FATHER, CHRISTOPHER HAVENS, WOULD NOT ALLOW HIM ACCESS TO A MOTORCYCLE. MADISON THEN REPORTEDLY BEGAN BREAKING WINDOWS AT THE HOME AND PUSHED HIS FATHER OUT OF HIS WHEELCHAIR, CAUSING HIM TO FALL TO THE GROUND. MADISON WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON $50,000 BAIL.

A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MAN UNFAMILIAR WITH LOCAL ROADS REMAINS MISSING AFTER HIS VEHICLE BECAME STUCK IN A DITCH ON SHERWOOD ROAD ABOUT 20 MILES WEST OF WILLITS.

51 YEAR OLD ERIK SWAN LAMBERG LAST SPOKE TO HIS FAMILY ON MAY 26TH, AND WAS LAST SEEN THE MORNING OF MAY 28TH. BASED ON CREDIT CARD RECEIPTS, LAMBERG CHECKED OUT OF A MOTEL AND SHOPPED AT A MARKET IN LAYTONVILLE THAT SAME MORNING. HIS CREDIT CARDS AND PHONE HAVE NOT BEEN USED SINCE. LAMBERG IS DESCRIBED AS 6 FEET, FIVE INCHES TALL WEIGHING ABOUT 200 POUNDS WITH SANDY BLONDE HAIR AND BLUE EYES. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, HE MAY BE EXPERIENCING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, BUT IS NOT CONSIDERED VIOLENT. ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT LAMBERGS DISAPPEARANCE OR CURRENT LOCATION IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE SHERIFFS OFFICE AT 463-4086.

WEST NILE VIRUS AGAIN DETECTED IN LAKE COUNTY JH 07/09/13

A SAMPLE OF MOSQUITOES COLLECTED LAST WEEK NEAR UPPER LAKE TESTED POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS.

THIS IS THE SECOND SAMPLE OF WEST NILE VIRUS POSITIVE MOSQUITOES FROM LAKE COUNTY THIS YEAR. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE HOT DAYS AND WARN NIGHTS PROVIDE IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR WEST NILE VIRUS TO INCREASE IN MOSQUITOES. STATEWIDE, THE NUMBER OF WEST NILE VIRUS MOSQUITO SAMPLES HAS DOUBLED IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. OFFICIALS ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FORM MOSQUITO BITES BY AVOIDING BEING OUTSIDE AT DUSK AND DAWN WHEN MOSQUITOES ARE MOST ACTIVE, AND WEAR LONG SLEEVES AND USE AN INSECT REPELLANT CONTAINING AN EPA REGISTERED ACTIVE INGREDIENT.

ROAD WORK MAY CAUSE MINOR TRAFFIC DELAYS THIS WEEK.

CAL TRANS WILL PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON HIGHWAY 1 AT THE JUG HANDLE CREEK BRIDGE. WORK WILL BE ONGOING FROM 7:30 AM TO 5 PM WEEKDAYS.

PAVING WILL BE DONE ON HIGHWAY 20 FROM JUST EAST OF LONG VALLEY ROAD BEGINNING TODAY. WORK WILL BE PERFORMED FROM 7 AM TO 4 PM WEEKDAYS.

CAL TRANS WILL PERFORM STRIPING TODAY ON HIGHWAY 29 FROM THE JUNCTION WITH HIGHWAY 53 TO THE JUNCTION WITH HIGHWAY 20. WORK WILL BE DONE FROM 8:30 AM TO 5 PM.

AT ALL LOCATIONS, ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT WITH 5 TO 10 MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.
