WILLITS RESIDENTS COMPLAIN ABOUT POOR WATER TASTE (PI)

JH 08/23/13

THE CITY OF WILLITS HAS BEEN RECEIVING CALLS REGARDING RECENT ISSUES WITH TASTE AND COLOR OF CITY WATER.

ACCORDING TO CITY OFFICIALS, THE CURRENT WATER CONDITION IS A COMPLETELY NATURAL OCCURRENCE RESULTING FROM LOW RESERVOIR LEVELS DURING WARM WEATHER MONTHS AND RECORD-BREAKING HEAT FOLLOWED BY A COLD SNAP, WHICH RESULTED IN AN UNUSUALLY HIGH ALGAE BLOOM. LAST YEAR, THE CITY INSTALLED SOLAR BEES, A NON-CHEMICAL TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR THE ALGAE BLOOM. THE SYSTEM IS WORKING WELL, HOWEVER, THE RECENT ALGAE BLOOM WAS FAR MORE EXTENSIVE THAN WHAT THE SYSTEM IS ABLE TO HANDLE. CITY STAFF TESTS THE WATER SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK AND CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE ASSURED THAT CITY WATER IS STILL COMPLETELY SAFE TO CONSUME.
