CREATING A FAIR TRADE FISH IN FORT BRAGG (EMP) JH 10/25/13

FORT BRAGG DRAG NET FISHERMAN, ALONG WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND, HOPE TO CREATE A FAIR TRADE FISHING PROGRAM THAT WOULD INFORM CONSUMERS ABOUT WHERE, WHEN, HOW AND EVEN WHO CAUGHT THEIR FISH.

THE EFFORT IS AN OUTGROWTH OF THE FORT BRAGG GROUNDFISHING ASSOCIATIONS WORKING WITH CENTRAL COAST FISHERMAN TO DEAL WITH THE FEDERAL CATCH-SHARE PROGRAM. THE PROPOSED PROGRAM LITERALLY GIVES EACH FISHING BOAT A SHARE OF THE ALLOWED TOTAL CATCH, BASED ON THEIR HISTORICAL FISHING TAKE. IF THE LOCAL EFFORTS TO CREATE THIS PROGRAM FAIL, MANY IN THE INDUSTRY FEAR CORPORATE CONSOLIDATION MIGHT DESTROY THE HISTORIC NOYO HARBOR FISHING INDUSTRY.
