PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING ON COSTCO EIR (GOV) JH 10/31/13

THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION WILL REVIEW THE FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT FOR A PLANNED COSTCO IN UKIAH AT NEXT MONTHS MEETING.

THE COMMISSION WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO CERTIFY THE EIR AND APPROVE THE REZONING OF THE PROPOSED SITE FOR THE STORE, WHICH IS JUST OVER 15 ACRES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF KEN FOWLER MOTORS ON AIRPORT PARK BOULEVARD. IF THE EIR IS CERTIFIED BY THE COMMISSION, IT WILL THEN MOVE ON TO THE CITY COUNCIL FOR CERTIFICATION. FROM THERE, THE COMMISSION WILL CONSIDER THE SITE DEVELOPMENT PERMIT FOR THE PROJECT. ACCORDING TO CITY OFFICIALS, THE EIR SHOULD BE READY FOR PUBLIC REVIEW AS EARLY AS THIS FRIDAY. THE DOCUMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE CITYS WEB SITE, AT THE CITY PLANNING DEPARTMENT, AND AT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY LIBRARY.

CAL FIRE CONTROL BURN TODAY (PI) JH 10/31/13

CAL FIRE WILL CONDUCT A VEGETATION MANAGEMENT CONTROL BURN TODAY ON PRIVATELY-OWNED LAND IN NORTHERN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BURN IS TO REINTRODUCE FIRE AS A NATURAL ELEMENT OF THE ECOSYSTEM, IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITAT, AND REDUCE THE OVERALL FUEL LOAD TO DECREASE THE CHANCE OF CATASTROPHIC WILDFIRES IN THE FUTURE. THE BURN WILL BE ON THE SHAMROCK RANCH BEGINNING AT 1 PM.

DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR FIREFIGHTER TRAINING (ED/EMP)

TODAY IS THE DEADLINE TO GET ENROLLED IN THE BASIC WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER TRAINING PROGRAM THAT COULD LEAD TO A JOB WITH CAL FIRE.

THE PROGRAM IS PROVIDED BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION/ CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CA FIRE MENDOCINO UNIT. THE PROGRAM OFFERS QUALITY INSTRUCTION FOR ALL STUDENTS, QUALIFYING THEM TO EARN UP TO 18 CAL FIRE CERTIFICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY FOR POTENTIAL CAL FIRE EMPLOYMENT STARTING IN JUNE 2014. APPLICATIONS MUST BE TURNED IN BY THE END OF TODAY. FOR ENROLLMENT INFORMATION, CONTACT THE OFFICE OF EDUCATION AT 467-5123.

RECREATIONAL CRAB SEASON OPENS THIS WEEKEND (PI) JH 10/31/13

THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST WILL BE ALIVE WITH FISHERMAN THIS WEEKEND, AS SATURDAY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF RECREATIONAL CRAB SEASON.

THE SEASON OFFICIALLY STARTS AT 12:01 AM SATURDAY, AT WHICH POINT LICENSED FISHERMEN CAN BEGIN DROPPING CRAB POTS INTO THE WATER. RECREATIONAL CRABBERS ARE PERMITTED TO TAKE MALE OR FEMALE CRABS, AS LONG AS THEY ARE AT LEAST FIVE INCHES FROM EDGE TO EDGE, MEASURED ACROSS THE SHORTEST DISTANCE JUST INSIDE THE LATERAL POINTS ON EACH SIDE. EACH PERSON IS PERMITTED TO CATCH 10 A DAY, THOUGH THEY CAN ONLY POSSESS 10 AT ANY GIVEN TIME. COMMERCIAL CRAB SEASON START IN JUST TWO WEEKS OFF THE SONOMA COAST, AND ON DECEMBER 1ST OR LATER OFF THE MENDOCINO AND HUMBOLDT COASTLINES.

LITTLE RIVER MAN IN FEDERAL COURT OVER EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGES (LAW) JH 10/31/13

A BIOLOGIST FROM LITTLE RIVER WAS ARRAIGNED TUESDAY IN SAN FRANCISCO FEDERAL COURT ON CHARGES ALLEGING HE CONSPIRED WITH A YUROK TRIBAL MEMBER TO EMBEZZLE MORE THAN $800,000 IN FEDERAL GRANT FUNDING INTENDED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES.

ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS, RON LeVALLEY ENTERED A NOT GUILTY PLEA TO THE CHARGES. THE YUROK TRIBAL MEMBER WHO INITIATED THE ALLEGED SCHEME, ROLAND LEROY RAYMOND, HAS ADMITTED TO SPENDING THE MONEY ON DRUGS AND GAMBLING. ACCORDING TO A STUDY, AMERICAN INDIAN TRIBES HAVE BEEN CAUGHT MISAPPROPRIATING TENS OF MILLIONS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS SINCE 1997.

FORT BRAGG POLICE CLOSE WALL STREET FOR HALLOWEEN (TR)

THE FORT BRAGG POLICE HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT A PORTION OF WALL STREET WILL BE CLOSED TONIGHT FOR HALLOWEEN.

THE CLOSURE IS DUE TO THE SAFETY CONCERNS FOR THE EVER INCREASING FOOT TRAFFIC ON WALL STREET BY TRICK-OR-TREATERS. THE STREET WILL BE CLOSED BETWEEN OAK STREET AND CHESTNUT STREET FROM 6 PM TO 9 PM TONIGHT.
