UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION TO DISCUSS COSTCO EIR TONIGHT (GOV)

JH 11/21/13

THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING TONIGHT TO DISCUSS THE COSTCO ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT.

THE COMMISSION WILL DISCUS WHETHER OR NOT TO MAKE A RECOMMENDATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL TO CERTIFY THE EIR. THE PROJECT REQUIRES THE CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF A REZONING AND PLANNING COMMISSION APPROVAL OF THE SITE DEVELOPMENT PERMIT TO ALLOW CONSTRUCTION OF A 148,000 SQUARE FOOT STORE WITH A BAKERY, PHARMACY, OPTICAL CENTER TIRE CENTER AND 16 PUMP GAS STATION. APPROVAL OF THE PROJECT WOULD ALSO REQUIRE CITY COUNCIL ADOPTION OF A STATEMENT OF OVERRIDING CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE SIGNIFICANT AND UNAVOIDABLE TRAFFIC, AIR QUALITY, AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS IDENTIFIED IN THE EIR. THIS BASICALLY DECLARES THAT THE STORES POSITIVE IMPACTS OUTWEIGH THE NEGATIVES. THE HEARING IS TONIGHT AT 6 PM IN THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS ON SEMINARY AVENUE.

UKIAH CITY COUNCIL DELAYS REMOVAL OF REDWOOD TREES AT UDJ (GOV) JH 11/21/13

AT WEDNESDAY NIGHTS CITY COUNCIL MEETING, THE COUNCIL DECIDED TO ALLOW THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL TIME TO INVESTIGATE ITS OPTIONS ON THE POSSIBILITY OF SAVING THE THREE REDWOOD TREES IN FRONT OF THEIR BUILDING.

AN ARBORIST HAS TOLD THE CITY THAT THE TREES ARE IN POOR HEALTH, AND THAT BECAUSE OF THEIR LOCATION, THE BEST SOLUTION WAS TO CUT THEM DOWN. HOWEVER, MANY WOULD LIKE TO FIND A WAY TO SAVE THE REDWOODS. THE PUBLISHER OF THE DAILY JOURNAL HAS SAID THAT THE NEWSPAPER MAY BE WILLING TO ASSUME LIABILITY AND FUTURE CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE TREES, BUT THEY NEED MORE TIME TO COMPLETE THEIR OWN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MATTER. THE CITY COUNCIL THEN CHOSE TO CONTINUE THE DISCUSSION AT ITS NEXT MEETING IN DECEMBER.

MONEY FROM THE SALE, PAIRED WITH THE REMAINING BALANCE TAKEN FROM THE DISTRICTS GENERAL FUND, WOULD ALLOW THE DISTRICT TO MAKE ITS PAYMENT IN JULY 2014 AS REQUIRED.

JH 11/21/13

BROADBAND SURVEY FOR CPUC (BB) JH 11/21/13

IF YOURE FRUSTRATED WITH YOUR INTERNET ACCESS, THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTY INVITES YOU TO TAKE A SURVEY FOR THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION, OR CPUC, AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON THE QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY OF BROADBAND SERVICE AT YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS.

EXPANDING BROADBAND SERVICES IN RURAL AREAS IS DIFFICULT FOR MANY REASONS, INCLUDING THE METHODOLOGY USED TO COLLECT DATA FOR THE STATE BROADBAND COVERAGE MAP. THIS MAP IS CREATED BY THE CPUC FROM ADVERTISED COVERAGE AND SPEED DATA PROVIDED BY THE INTERNET PROVIDERS, SUCH AS AT&T, VERIZON, AND COMCAST. IN A HUGE BREAKTHROUGH FOR CONSUMERS, THE CPUC IS NOW ACCEPTING INPUT DIRECTLY FROM RESIDENTS TO VALIDATE OR INVALIDATE THESE ADVERTISED COVERAGE SPEEDS. THIS IMPROVED ACCURACY WILL HELP THE CPUC TO GUIDE EFFECTIVELY BROADBAND SUBSIDIES TO AREAS OF GREATEST NEED WHEN GRANTS ARE REVIEWED FOR BROADBAND EXPANSION. TAKE THE SURVEY AT www.broadbandmap.ca.gov. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE INTERNET ACCESS, CALL THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTY FOR INFORMATION ON WHERE TO GET A PAPER COPY TO MAIL IN. THEIR NUMBER IS 354-2262. YOU CAN ALSO TAKE THE SURVEY ON AN ANDROID MOBILE APP CALLED CALSPEED.
