THE McCABE FIRE (LAW) JH 11/25/13

THE McCABE FIRE, WHICH BEGAN EARLY FRIDAY MORNING, AND IS BURNING IN THE AREA OF THE GEYSERS, IS STILL RAGING AS FIREFIGHTERS WORK TO TOWARDS CONTAINMENT.

THE FIRE HAS CONSUMED 3,505 ACRES SO FAR AND IS 75 PERCENT CONTAINED AS OF THIS MORNING. ONE POWER PLANT COOLING TOWER HAS BEEN DESTROYED SO FAR AND THREE INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT IT IS BELIEVED THAT DOWNED POWER LINES CAUSED BY HIGH WINDS MAY BE RESPONSIBLE. CAL FIRE HOPES TO HAVE THE BLAZE FULLY CONTAINED BY TOMORROW.

HIGH GLADE FIRE (LAW) JH 11/25/13

FIREFIGHTERS ARE CURRENTLY BATTLING A FIRE IN A REMOTE AREA NORTH OF HIGH GLADE LOOKOUT ON THE UPPER LAKE RANGER DISTRICT OF THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE BLAZE WAS SPOTTED SATURDAY MORNING, AND IS ESTIMATED TO BE HOLDING AT ABOUT 350 ACRES WITH CONTAINMENT ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 5 PERCENT. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

WIND KNOCKS OVER SEMI ON HIGHWAY 20 (LAW) JH 11/25/13

HIGH WINDS KNOCKED A SEMI OVER ON ITS SIDE FRIDAY MORNING ON HIGHWAY 20 NEAR ROBINSON RANCHERIA.

THE TRUCKS DRIVER, ALLEN CLASS OF BANDON OREGON, WAS HEADED WESTBOUND WHEN A GUST OF WIND HIT HIS EMPTY 40 FOOT TRAILER TIPPING IT OVER, WHICH PULLED THE CAB OVER AS WELL. THE HIGHWAY WAS LIMITED TO ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WHILE AUTHORITIES UPRIGHTED THE TRUCK. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

SPECIAL LAKE COUNTY BOS MEETING TOMORROW (GOV) JH 11/25/13

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL CONVENE A SPECIAL MEETING TUESDAY TO CONFIRM THE EXISTENCE OF A LOCAL EMERGENCY FOR LAKE COUNTY DUE TO THE SEVERE WIND STORM LAST THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.

LAKE COUNTY OFFICIALS PROCLAIMED THE EMERGENCY FRIDAY AFTERNOON TO ALLOW COUNTY DEPARTMENTS TO EXPEDITE THE PROCUREMENT PROCESS TO PURCHASE SUPPLIES AND HIRE OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS TO HELP ADDRESS THE COUNTYS RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE RECOVERY PROCESS FROM THE DEVASTATING HIGH WINDS. THE MEETING WILL BE TOMORROW MORNING AT 9 AM IN THE SUPERVISORS CHAMBERS AT THE LAKE COUNTY COURT HOUSE ON FORBES STREET.

MENDOCINO COUNTY FORMER CAO PASSES (PI) JH 11/25/13

MENDOCINO COUNTYS FORMER CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER PASSED AWAY OVER THE WEEKEND.

AL BELTRAMI, WAS THE COUNTYS CAO FOR TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, FROM 1965 TO 1990 WHEN HE ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT. HE WAS REHIRED BY THE COUNTY AS AN INTERIM CEO IN 2006, AND ALSO SERVED ON VARIOUS BOARDS OVER THE YEARS. ACCORDING TO SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN, BELTRAMI WAS A PERSON WHO UNDERSTOOD THE NEED FOR OUR LEADERS TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF FIGHTING EACH OTHER. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN MADE YET, AND WILL BE HANDLED BY THE EVERSOLE MORTUARY. BELTRAMI WAS 79 YEARS OLD.

THE RETECH FIRE (LAW) JH 11/25/13

A FIRE NEAR RETECH FRIDAY MORNING BURNED ALMOST 100 ACRES, BUT WAS CONTAINED BY THAT EVENING.

ACCORDING TO CAL FIRE, THE BLAZE STARTED A LITTLE AFTER 10 AM ON HENRY STATION ROAD. THE FIRE CONSUMED 50 ACRES IN THE FIRST COUPLE HOURS, BUT FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO GET IT UNDER CONTROL BY LATE AFTERNOON. WITH A TOTAL OF 82 ACRES BURNED. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

LAKE COUNTY OFFERING FREE GREEN WASTE COLLECTION (PI)

JH 11/25/13

AS LAKE COUNTY CONTINUES WITH CLEANUP FROM LAST WEEKS WIND STORM, THE COUNTY IS OFFERING FREE ASSISTANCE WITH GREEN WASTE COLLECTION.

TODAY, THE COUNTY WILL SET UP GREEN WASTE COLLECTION SITES AND LARGE DEBRIS BOXES IN SOME OF THE HARDEST HIT AREAS ALONG THE NORTHSHORE, WHERE THE BRUNT OF THE DAMAGE WAS DONE. ON THE SOUTH END OF THE LAKE, GREEN WASTE CAN BE DROPPED OFF FOR FREE AT THE CITY OF CLEARLAKES CORPORATION YARD. ONLY TREE AND BRUSH DEBRIS WILL BE ACCEPTED. THE SERVICE WILL REMAIN AVAILABLE THROUGH JANUARY 15TH. ACCORDING TO COUNTY OFFICIALS, VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO NEEDED. IF INTERESTED, CALL THE LAKE COUNTY PERSONNEL OFFICE AT 263-2213.

WILLITS GROCERY STORE TO CLOSE (PI) JH 11/25/13

A WILLITS GROCERY STORE WILL BE CLOSING DUE TO THE PARENT COMPANY FILING CHAPTER ELEVEN BANKRUPTCY TO REORGANIZE ITSELF.

ACCORDING TO AN ANNOUNCEMENT BY C & K MARKETS INC, BASED IN BROOKINGS OREGON, THE COMPANY WILL ELIMINATE ABOUT ONE THIRD OF ITS STORES, INCLUDING THE LOBUCKS MARKET IN WILLITS. THE STORE WILL BE CLOSED OR SOLD BY THE END OF DECEMBER. C & K MARKETS ALSO OWNS RAYS FOOD PLACE IN CLEARLAKE AND BRUNOS SHOP SMART IN LAKEPORT. BOTH LAKE COUNTY MARKETS WILL REMAIN OPEN AND WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE BANKRUPTCY PROCESS.

ARSONIST SENTENCED TO PRISON (LAW) JH 11/25/13

A WILLITS MAN THAT WAS CONVICTED OF STARTING SEVERAL FIRES WHILE ALSO VOLUNTEERING FOR THE WILLITS-LITTLE LAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS SENTENCED TO PRISON ON FRIDAY.

22 YEAR OLD BRICE LEE McKINNON WAS ARRESTED IN AUGUST ON SEVERAL COUNTS OF ARSON TO FOREST LANDS AFTER ALLEGEDLY STARTING MULTIPLE FIRES IN THE WILLITS AREA IN JULY AND AUGUST. McKINNON WAS SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS AND EIGHT MONTHS IN PRISON.
