FIRE AT UKIAHS HOMELESS SHELTER (LAW) JH 12/02/13

A FIRE AT UKIAHS HOMELESS SHELTER SATURDAY NIGHT CAUSED THE EVACUATION OF THE DINING HALL.

THE FIRE AT THE BUDDY ELLER HOMELESS SHELTER, REPORTED AROUND 10:30 PM, STARTED IN A CLOTHES DRYER AND TRIGGERED THE OVERHEAD SPRINKLERS IN THE BUILDING. THOUGH THE SPRINKLERS MINIMIZED THE FIRE, THEY ALSO FLOODED THE BUILDING WITH A COUPLE INCHES OF WATER. THE FIRE, WHICH WAS QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED, CAUSED ABOUT 30 OR SO PEOPLE TO BE EVACUATED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, BUT DID NOT AFFECT ANY OF THE SLEEPING QUARTERS, AND DID NOT DISPLACE ANYONE FOR THE NIGHT.

TRIAL BEGINS FOR ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AT SHERIFFS DEPUTY (LAW)

THE TRIAL BEGINS TODAY FOR A UKIAH MAN ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AT A MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTY DURING A HIGH SPEED CHASE EARLIER THIS YEAR.

43 YEAR OLD WALTER K MILLER IS CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER, ASSAULT WITH A FIREARM, AND SEVERAL OTHER CHARGES FOR HIS PART IN A SERIES OF CRIMES THAT CULMINATED IN A CHASE DURING WHICH MILLER ALLEGEDLY LEANED OUT THE PASSENGER WINDOW OF THE VEHICLE AND SHOT AT A SHERIFF DEPUTY, DISABLING HIS CAR. THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO LAST LESS THAN TWO WEEKS.

CITY OF UKIAH APPROVES NEW FINANCIAL POLICY STATEMENTS (GOV)

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL TOOK A LOOK AT AND APPROVED A GROUP OF NEW POLICIES MEANT TO GUIDE THE CITY IN IT SPENDING.

ACCORDING TO ONE COUNCIL MEMBER WHEN SPEAKING OF THE FIFTY PLUS POLICY STATEMENTS REGARDING THE CITYS FISCAL GOALS, THESE GUIDELINES ENSURE THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN UNDERSTAND HOW WERE DOING BUSINESS, BUT ALSO THAT THERES SOME KIND OF INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY OF THIS. THE COUNCIL APPROVED THE POLICIES IN A 3 TO 1 VOTE.

UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PROVIDE FREE DINNERS (PI/ED)

THE UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL BE SERVING AN EVENING MEAL TO MANY STUDENTS NEXT YEAR IN A PROGRAM RECENTLY APPROVED BY THE DISTRICTS BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTS THAT ACCORDING TO THE DISTRICT FOOD SERVICES DIRECTOR, LES RIDGWAY, THE AFTER-SCHOOL SUPPER PROGRAM WILL BE FUNDED BY THE CHILD AND ADULT CARE FOOD PROGRAM. IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM IN THE DISTRICT WOULD NOT ONLY BENEFIT ITS STUDENTS, BUT PROVIDE ADDITIONAL REVENUE FOR THE DISTRICT BECAUSE IT WILL BE REIMBURSED FOR EVERY MEAL. THE DISTRICT ALREADY PROVIDES A SNACK TO STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM, THAT GENERATES $115,000 WITH A FOOD COST AROUND 50 PERCENT AND MINIMAL LABOR COSTS. THE NEW PROGRAM COULD GENERATE AS MUCH AS $475,000 WITH A SOMEWHAT SMALLER FOOD COST OF AROUND 35 PERCENT. RIDGEWAY SAID THE PROGRAM WOULD LIKELY BEGIN IN JANUARY.

LAKE COUNTY SUPS TO CONSIDER FINAL READING OF TAX ORDINANCE FOR LAKE MAINTENANCE (GOV) JH 12/02/13

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL CONSIDER A FINAL READING OF A NEW POSSIBLE TAX ORDINANCE FOR LAKE MAINTENANCE AT THIS WEEKS MEETING.

THE DRAFT ORDINANCE FOR A TRANSACTION AND USE TAX WOULD PLACE A HALF CENT SALES TAX ON NEXT JUNES BALLOT THAT COULD RAISE AN ESTIMATED $2.4 MILLION ANNUALLY TO BE USED FOR LAKE MAINTENANCE, INCLUDING ALGAE AND INVASIVE PLANT MITIGATION. THE MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3RD IN THE BOARD CHAMBERS OF THE LAKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN LAKEPORT.

CITY AND COUNTY TAX SHARING AD HOC MEETING (GOV) JH 12/02/13

THE CITY OF UKIAH AND THE COUNTY WILL HAVE A JOINT MEETING WITH THE MENDOCINO COUNTY TAX SHARING AD-HOC COMMITTEE.

THE MEETING WILL FOCUS ON THE DISCUSSION AND CONSIDERATION OF A MASTER TAX SHARING AGREEMENT, THAT HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR DECADES. IN RECENT MEETINGS ON THE TOPIC, BOTH THE CITY AND COUNTY HAVE COME CLOSE TO A FINAL AGREEMENT. THE MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3RD AT 5:30 PM IN THE SUPERVISORS CHAMBERS ON LOW GAP ROAD.

ROAD WORK THIS WEEK (TR) JH 12/02/13

THERE ARE NUMEROUS ROAD WORK PROJECTS CAUSING DELAYS AROUND LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES CURRENTLY.

HIGHWAY WIDENING AND REHABILITATION WILL CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY 53 FROM 40TH AVENUE TO THE JUNCTION OF ROUTES 20 AND 53. WORK WILL BE ONGOING FROM 6 AM TO 5 PM WEEKDAYS.

PG&E WILL BE TRIMMING TREES ON HIGHWAY 20 JUST EAST OF THE JAMES CREEK BRIDGE. WORK WILL BE ONGOING FROM 8 AM TO 4 PM WEEKDAYS.

PG&E WILL ALSO BE TRIMMING TREES ON HIGHWAY 175 FROM ABOUT 1.5 MILES EAST OF BUCKMAN DRIVE TO BUCKMAN DRIVE. WORK HER IS ALSO ONGOING FROM 8 AM TO 3 PM WEEKDAYS.

AT ALL THREE LOCATIONS, ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT WITH 5 TO 10 MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.
