INMATE DIES IN LAKE COUNTY JAIL (LAW) JH 05/12/14

DURING A ROUTINE CELL CHECK SATURDAY MORNING AT THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, AND INMATE WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS CELL.

THE CORRECTIONS OFFICER NOTIFIED MEDICAL STAFF AROUND 9:05 AM, WHO RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY AND BEGAN CPR ON THE INMATE. AFTER ABOUT 25 MINUTES OF CPR, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF LIFE AND CPR WAS DISCONTINUED. THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AND DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE ARE CONDUCTING PARALLEL INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE CAUSE OF THE INMATES DEATH. THE INMATE WAS HOUSED ALONE AND FOUL PLAY DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A FACTOR IN THE CAUSE OF DEATH. THE EXACT CAUSE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION AND PENDING THE RESULTS OF AN AUTOPSY, WHICH IS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK.

SWAT CALLED FOR MAN BARRICADED INSIDE COVELO HOME (LAW)

SWAT WAS CALLED AFTER A LAKEPORT MAN BARRICADED HIMSELF INSIDE A COVELO HOME FOLLOWING HIS ASSAULT OF HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND.

20-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM REEVES WAS AT HIS EX-GIRLFRIENDS RESIDENCE ON BARNES LANE IN COVELO WHEN HE ACCUSED HER OF STEALING HIS DIGITAL MUSIC. DURING THE INCIDENT, REEVES THREW THE VICTIM TO THE GROUND, AND PUNCHED HER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AS SHE WAS SPEAKING TO A 911 OPERATOR. WHEN AUTHORITIES ARRIVED AND WERE SPEAKING TO THE VICTIM OUTSIDE, REEVES CAME OUT, THEN FLED BACK INTO THE HOME AND BARRICADED HIMSELF INTO A BEDROOM, TELLING AUTHORITIES HE HAD A GUN. REEVES STARTED A SMALL FIRE IN THE HOME AND TOLD AUTHORITIES THEY WOULD HAVE TO SHOOT HIM. AFTER A 6 HOUR STANDOFF WITH SWAT, REEVES GAVE UP PEACEFULLY AND WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

GRAND JURY DEADLINE EXTENDED (GOV) JH 05/12/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT HAS EXTENDED THE DEADLINE FOR RESIDENTS TO SUBMIT APPLICATIONS FOR THE GRAND JURY.

GRAND JURORS MUST BE AMERICAN CITIZENS, 18 YEARS OR OLDER, AND A RESIDENT OF MENDOCINO COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR. THE JURY CONSISTS OF 19 MEMBERS WHO SERVE FOR ONE YEAR AND ARE EMPOWERED TO INVESTIGATE THE OPERATIONS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND RESPOND TO CITIZEN COMPLAINTS. WILLITS MURDER DEFENDANT CHANGES GUILTY PLEA (LAW)

A WILLITS MAN WHO ADMITTED TO KILLING HIS GRANDFATHER BY DRAGGING HIM BEHIND A PICK-UP TRUCK FOR 6 MILES LAST YEAR, HAS WITHDRAWN HIS GUILTY PLEA.

24-YEAR-OLD KENNETH LEE WILKINSON WITHDREW THE GUILTY PLEA AT FRIDAY MORNINGS SENTENCING HEARING, JUST BEFORE HE WAS TO BE SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON. THE GUILTY PLEA WAS PART OF A DEAL THAT WOULD HAVE SPARED HIM FROM A POSSIBLE SENTENCE OF LIFE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE, IF CONVICTED ON THE SPECIAL ALLEGATION THAT HE TORTURED HIS GRANDFATHER. NOW LAWYERS MUST DETERMINE WHETHER WILKINSON HAS A VALID CAUSE TO WITHDRAW THE PLEA. ALL PARTIES INVOLVED WILL BE BACK IN COURT LATER THIS MONTH TO DETERMINE THE NEXT STEP IN THE TRIAL.

THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE REPORTS, THE DISCOVERY COMES AS BLOOMS OF TOXIC ALGAE HAVE MULTIPLIED IN OUR COASTAL WATERS, THREATENING WILDLIFE AND INCREASING THE RISK OF SEAFOOD-BORNE ILLNESSES IN HUMANS. DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICIALS SAY THE MICRO ORGANISM BEHIND THE 2011 ABALONE DIE-OFF MOSTLY BENEFITS THE PACIFIC OCEAN FOOD CHAIN, BUT UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THE PLANKTON PROLIFERATE AND START PRODUCING A TOXIN THAT CAN SICKEN PEOPLE WHO CONSUME CONTAMINATED SHELLFISH.

CALPELLA WOMAN ATTACKS BOYFRIEND WITH KNIFE AND FORK (LAW)

A CALPELLA WOMAN WAS ARRESTED FRIDAY AFTER ATTACKING HER BOYFRIEND WITH A KNIFE AND FORK.

SHERIFFS DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO THE NORTH STATE STREET ADDRESS EARLY FRIDAY MORNING, WHERE THE RESIDENTS, AN UNIDENTIFIED MALE AND 33 YEAR OLD ERIKA NUNEZ TOLD THEM THEY HAD BEEN IN AN ARGUMENT. THE MALE TOLD DEPUTIES THAT NUNEZ BECAME AGITATED, GRABBED A KITCHEN KNIFE AND TRIED TO ASSAULT HIM WITH IT. AFTER AVOIDING ATTACK, NUNEZ PUT THE KNIFE DOWN AND PICKED UP A BBQ FORK AND AGAIN ATTEMPTED TO ASSAULT HER BOYFRIEND. HE MANAGED TO AVOID INJURY A SECOND TIME, AND NUNEZ WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

AUTHORITIES SEIZE OVER 1,000 MARIJUANA PLANTS IN MIDDLETOWN (LAW) JH 05/12/14

AUTHORITIES ASSISTING LAKE COUNTY CODE ENFORCEMENT WITH A POSSIBLE ILLEGAL MARIJUANA CULTIVATION SITE MADE TWO ARRESTS AND SEIZED POT PLANTS AND CASH.

AUTHORITIES ARRIVED AT THE DRY CREEK ROAD PARCEL THAT WAS LISTED AS VACANT, BUT HAD SEVERAL UN-PERMITTED STRUCTURES THAT TURNED OUT TO BE HOOP STYLE GREENHOUSES. AUTHORITIES LOCATED AND DETAINED 31 YEAR OLD AARON MONROE LENTZ AND 31 YEAR OLD ANDREW PETER DIEHL, BOTH OF MIDDLETOWN. A SEARCH OF THE PROPERTY RESULTED IN THE ERADICATION OF OVER 1,300 MARIJUANA PLANTS, SEIZURE OF PROCESSED POT AND NEAR $3,000 IN CASH. BOTH LENTZ AND DIEHL WERE BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

THREE SEX OFFENDERS ARRESTED AFTER VIOLATING REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS (LAW) JH 05/12/14

A MAY 1ST REQUEST BY THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT FOR ASSISTANCE LOCATING TWO SEX OFFENDERS IN VIOLATION OF THEIR SEX REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS, HAVE LED TO THE ARREST OF BOTH SUSPECTS AND A THIRD OFFENDER.

AUTHORITIES LOCATED 42 YEAR OLD FLASH BLANTON OF LUCERNE, 34-YEAR-OLD MONTY TIMMONS OF NICE, AND ALSO 43 YEAR OLD AARON ABNER LUDKE OF COBB. ALL THREE WERE BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL FOR REGISTRATION VIOLATIONS.

ROAD WORK TODAY (TR) JH 05/12/14

THERE ARE SEVERAL ROAD WORK PROJECTS AROUND LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES THAT ARE CAUSING TRAFFIC DELAYS CURRENTLY.

RESTRIPPING WILL CONTINUE TODAY ON HIGHWAY 101 JUST SOUTH OF THE HIGHWAY 20 JUNCTION. WORKING HOURS ARE FROM 10 PM TO 10 AM. TRAFFIC WILL BE RESTRICTED TO ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. MOTORISTS MAY EXPERIENCE MINOR SLOWDOWNS.

UTILITY REPAIRS WILL BE PERFORMED ON HIGHWAY 1 AT THE WAGES CREEK BRIDGE TODAY. WORKING HOURS ARE FROM 8 AM TO 2 PM.

AND, UTILITY REPAIRS WILL BE PERFORMED ON HIGHWAY 253 AT ROBINSON CREEK ROAD TODAY AND TOMORROW. WORKING HOURS ARE 9 AM TO 3 PM.

AT BOTH LOCATIONS, ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL BE IN EFFECT WITH 5 TO 15 MINUTE DELAYS ANTICIPATED.
