UKIAH MAN STABBED NEAR BIG LOTS (LAW) JH 05/14/14

A UKIAH MAN WALKING WITH FAMILY WAS STABBED MONDAY AFTERNOON NEAR BIG LOTS.

THE DAILY JOURNAL REPORTS, AN UNIDENTIFIED 24-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS WALKING DOWN ORCHARD AVENUE WITH HIS FIANCÉE AND DAUGHTER WHEN HE WAS APPROACHED BY ANOTHER MAN. THE TWO BEGAN ARGUING BEFORE THE SUSPECT PULLED A KNIFE AND CUT THE VICTIM TWICE, NEAR THE RIGHT EYE AND ON THE FOREARM. THE SUSPECT FLED AND THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 462-6262.

BODIES FOUND IN LAYTONVILLE IN MARIJUANA GARDEN (LAW)

TWO BODIES FOUND IN LAYTONVILLE MONDAY, WERE BADLY DECOMPOSED AND IN A GREENHOUSE FILLED WITH MARIJUANA.

DEPUTIES WERE TAKEN TO THE WOODMAN CREEK ROAD HOME BY A PERSON WHO FOUND THE BODIES. TWO DECEASED MALE BODIES WERE LOCATED IN A GREENHOUSE WITH APPROXIMATELY 180 SMALL MARIJUANA PLANTS. THE BODIES WERE IN ADVANCED STAGES OF DECOMPOSITION, AND DETECTIVES WERE UNABLE TO NOTE ANY OBVIOUS SIGNS AS TO THE CAUSE OF DEATH. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION THAT COULD AID DETECTIVES IN THIS INVESTIGATION IS URGED TO CONTACT THE SHERIFFS OFFICE TIP LINE AT 234-2100.

REWARD FUND STARTED FOR REDWOOD BURL POACHERS (LAW/EVR)

A RECENT SPIKE IN REDWOOD BURL POACHING PROMPTED THREE AGENCIES TO COME TOGETHER TO DEVELOP A REWARD FUND FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO AN ARREST.

THE TIMES-STANDARD REPORTS, WHEN A TREES BURL IS CUT OFF, EXPOSURE TO INSECTS OR DISEASE WEAKENS THE TREE, WHICH COULD CAUSE IT TO TOPPLE. THE THREE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS ARE OFFERING A $5000 REWARD TO PROTECT THE BURL. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON BURL THEFT IS ASKED TO CONTACT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OR TO CALL THE PARK SERVICE CRIME LINE AT 465-7353.

SECURITY CHECK NETS ONE ARREST AND COCAINE (LAW) JH 05/14/14

A SECURITY CHECK RESULTED IN ONE ARREST AND SEIZURE OF COCAINE THIS WEEK.

32 YEAR OLD LAWRENCE HIRSCHELL MURRAY OF MIRANDA WAS OBSERVED BY DEPUTIES TUESDAY AT ROBINSON RANCHERIA BINGO AND CASINO, AND DURING A CONVERSATION, ADMITTED TO BEING ON PROBATION WITH A SEARCH CLAUSE. WHEN ASKED TO BE SEARCHED, MURRAY ATTEMPTED TO FLEE, BUT WAS QUICKLY APPREHENDED. MURRAY WAS FOUND TO HAVE 3.8 GRAMS OF COCAINE IN HIS POSSESSION, AND HE WAS BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

BLOWN TIRE ON GREYHOUND BUS SPARKS SEVERAL FIRES (LAW)

A GREYHOUND BUS THAT HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT SPARKED SEVERAL ROADSIDE FIRES ALONG HIGHWAY 101 TUESDAY.

THE NORTHBOUND BUS WAS EMPTY WHEN A DRIVERS SIDE TIRE CAUGHT FIRE. BURNING DEBRIS FROM THE TIRE IGNITED ROADSIDE BRUSH IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS OVER A TWO-MILE STRETCH OF ROAD. THE FIRES WERE SMALL AND EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY WITH MINIMAL DAMAGE. CHP REPORTED NO INJURIES FROM THE INCIDENT.

MOSQUITO THREAT NOT NECESSARILY EASED BY DROUGHT (EVR)

MOSQUITO POPULATIONS ARE NOT NECESSARILY AFFECTED BY THIS YEARS DROUGHT CONDITIONS.

AREA VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICTS HAVE REPORTED AN INCREASE IN MOSQUITO RELATED SERVICE REQUESTS OVER THE LAST YEAR. THE EARLY RAINS FOLLOWED BY WARM WEATHER HAVE CAUSED AN INCREASE IN MOSQUITO POPULATIONS. WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS, SUCH AS RAIN BARRELS AND EVEN OLDER CONCRETE SEPTIC TANKS CAN HOLD THE TYPE OF MOSQUITO THAT CARRIES THE WEST NILE VIRUS. ANYONE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT MOSQUITO PROBLEMS CAN CONTACT THEIR LOCAL VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT.

HOT WEATHER INCREASES FIRE RISK (PI) JH 05/14/14

THIS WEEKS WARM WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO SET RECORDS AROUND THE STATE AS WELL AS INCREASE THE RISK OF WILDFIRE.

ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE, RECORD TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TODAY AND POSSIBLE TOMORROW AND WILL LEAVE MUCH OF THE STATE AT GREAT RISK OF FIRE DUE TO THE CURRENT DROUGHT CONDITIONS. ALL RESIDENTS ARE REMINDED TO BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS WHEN USING OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT, LIKE LAWN MOWERS AND TRIMMERS, IN AN EFFORT TO MINIMIZE FIRE RISK. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PREDICTS A COOLING TREND WILL BEGIN FRIDAY.

ROAD WORK TODAY (TR) JH 05/14/14

THERE ARE SEVERAL ROAD WORK PROJECTS THAT ARE CAUSING TRAFFIC DELAYS AROUND LAKE AND MENDOCINO CURRENTLY.

UTILITY REPAIRS WILL BE MADE ON HIGHWAY 1 JUST OVER 2 MILES SOUTH OF THE ELK CREEK BRIDGE TODAY. WORK WILL BE PERFORMED 2 TO 2:30 PM THIS AFTERNOON. INTERMITTENT FULL ROAD CLOSURES WILL BE IN EFFECT.

AND EAST COMMERCIAL STREET, ALSO KNOWN AS HEARST-WILLITS ROAD WILL BE CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC BETWEEN SOUTH LENORE AVENUE AND BRAY ROAD FROM 8 PM TONIGHT THROUGH 5 AM TOMORROW. THIS CLOSURE IS NEEDED TO PLACE METAL BEAMS ABOVE THE ROAD FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE VIADUCT SECTION OF THE HIGHWAY 101 BYPASS AROUND WILLITS.
